everybody i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show where i'm taking off my coat i was just downstairs in the uh basement which is um where there's some storage looking for a film and just got back all right anywho uh that was uh american steel wire made by us s steel and um yeah very functional reinforcements for concrete um that was from oregon archive where which is based in pittsburgh and that's why we sometimes when we show films from there it's about the steel industry because that was based that uh company was based in pittsburgh and so there was a lot of films floating around um let's learn about basketball and specifically how to play in a team but this is only basketball for boys um it seems like pe films there was this division uh early on about well this is uh basketball for girls and this is for boys and i don't know at some point i i think they realized you know what doesn't matter same rules all right enjoy [Music] after learning the individual skills of basketball which we've seen in the first film it's time to work on team play when a player has the ball he is the most important man on the team only a man with the ball can score shoot over a defensive player if he isn't guarding closely if he gets too close drive by him faking a shot or a drive makes it hard for the defensive man to guard you as the defensive man comes forward lower your shoulder and drive fake a drive and shoot keep the ball away from the defensive man when faking faker drive and change direction step across with the front foot keeping the back foot in place the skilled player combines shooting and driving with quickness and faking to force the defensive player out of position team offense depends upon one player helping his partner get free for a shot now let's watch this again in this two-man play called the set screen player a with the ball waits until b sets a screen as a drives to the basket defensive player one is screened from the play watch how the defensive player is screened and cannot follow the offensive player if the defense switches b rolls to the basket receives a pass from a and scores the screener rolls to the basket keeping his eyes on his partner teamwork scores a basket a second type of play two-man cuts creates moving screens in a pass and cut the dribbler drives by his moving partner the dribbler judges carefully the proper time to drive behind his partner if the defense switches a pass to the first man cutting through brings a score watch the bounce pass two-man cuts work well when other players are included in a weaving motion each man becomes a screen for the next player who cuts by him good passing is essential to keep the weaving motion going passing to a postman or center and cutting by him is another effective two-man play the passer changes direction and forces his defensive man behind the post two men cutting by a post adds more trouble for the defense the second man cutting is usually the best choice work with your partner to learn set screens two-man cuts and post cuts if the defense switches pass to the man rolling to the basket five-man offense depends on each player doing a good job in this play the guard cuts inside the forward the forward drives by the guard and shoots in front of the postman his teammates are ready to rebound or retreat to defense guard passes forward drives to shoot his jump shot notice that the offensive players are in good rebound position tough defensive play stops the dribbler keep the ball moving and let your teammates try for a score on the other side of the court in team offense each player must do his job keep the ball moving screen for his partner work for a good shot and rebound or retreat for defense defense is a team problem each man must be alert whether guarding the man with the ball or a player without the ball keep your eyes on the ball and the man you are guarding stay between your man and the basket this is called the defensive triangle as the ball moves away from you retreat to the basket staying in the defensive triangle guard your man closely when he is near the ball retreat as the ball moves away guard your man closer as he moves to the basket screen the offensive player away from the shot in man-to-man defense each player is assigned a man to guard work to get in rebounding position in a zone defense each player is assigned to guard an area in a 2-1-2 zone the center stays between the ball and the basket the two guards start under the basket and cover into the corners while the two forwards pursue the ball in front of the basket as the ball moves the defenders shift position to prevent passes or drives to the basket there is no loafing in his own defense all the players move with the ball a zone defense forces the offense to shoot from the outside and keeps the defensive players in good rebounding positions basketball is a fast moving and exciting game practicing the fundamental skills and working with the members of your team will make it a winning game [Music] so uh i guess i have another one in that series uh somewhere but um somebody mentioned uh i guess another basketball training uh film that i have in the series that also has a advertisement in the middle the sponsor like dsnx or socks or something like that so it's kind of interesting all right so behind me i have almost like watching nature footage you know of like um just to see what happens uh i have other films in this series that have no narration and that just basically offer up this situation and so my guess is that this was made for teachers and made for um early child development uh students who were learning about you know how kids interact with the world uh i clean i've made a mess of lunch which is what i'm cleaning up right here it's kind of horrible anyways um really fascinating uh and love films like that absolutely love films like that uh i've had this film set up for a while it was scanned by someone at the internet archive but i'm a big fan because you know here at av geeks we not only watch films to for our enjoyment so we can look back and laugh but we also learn some life skills important life skills and this one is how to make and use dioramas and um the scanner that they use at the internet archive had a warp warble to it so the music is but i hope that doesn't uh take away from the valuable education about how to make a diorama all right enjoy the diorama is a three-dimensional group in miniature it brings living impressions of the outside world into the classroom by creating an illusion of reality it can be used for motivation as in a first grade unit on farm life the diorama can help a teacher give her students meaningful learning experiences [Music] its use should be supplemented with other instructional materials in the ongoing study of a subject a diorama can serve in the review or culmination of a study united are not generally available teachers and students usually prepare their own these useful teaching tools can be tailor-made to fit the situation you don't have to be an artist to make good dioramas [Music] the flat picture file in the instructional materials center will often furnish background material for the working sketch from which the diorama will be built [Music] dioramas do not have to be real life replicas they can represent a figment of the imagination [Music] the working sketch does not have to be a finished drawing it serves only as a place relationship plan for objects that will appear in the diorama as a guide for painting the background and as a clue to construction details [Music] materials for the shell of the diorama include four pieces of wood one inch square a semi-circular piece of corrugated cardboard for the base and a long piece of cardboard for the background the diorama should be twice as wide as it is high and deep the height and depth should not exceed 18 inches or the realistic effect will be destroyed the illusion of reality is easier to my [Music] try accessories in the shell for placement size and perspective in relation to the background diorama accessories are subject to the same laws of construction that apply to any craft work [Music] the shape of accessories and the materials out of which they are made should add to the realistic effect [Music] try several arrangements to see which creates the best illusion of reality [Music] so actual small branches with twigs may be used as trees but leaves should be made out of dried moss bits of sponge or other small scale craftwork materials [Music] land contours should be made with lightweight materials that will not put too much strain on the base cardboard crumpled paper burlap or wire matting overlaid with paper mache gives satisfactory results [Music] wow [Music] the placement of diorama objects and accessories should be determined and marked off on the base in accordance with the plan for the group [Music] cover the bare dirt area of the barnyard with glue [Music] before the glue dries cover it with sand or pulverized dried dirt the desired effect [Music] watercolor oil tempera or show card paints can be used on the background but the background must be painted in the diorama to maintain the true illusion of reality the disappearing relationship of the foreground blending into the background [Music] paint the foreground before finishing the background and make necessary corrections for blending of the two [Music] complete the background and finish blending it with the foreground you should not be aware of the angle at which the two meet [Music] place objects and accessories in position and install one or two small electric bulbs for proper lighting effects a frame can add the final touch [Music] students will a unit of study at the sixth grade level can include the construction of a diorama as the pivot around which all other classwork centers it will be a purposeful learning experience for the entire group [Music] from such activity older children develop skills in research and the evaluation and organization of information [Music] available objects models and specimens are collected and studied authorities interviewed and many types of instructional materials used to gain background information on the subject [Music] research is the bridge between the more passive learning processes and the creative arts construction of the diorama coordinates research with the craft skills and thereby draws upon all types of learning experiences [Music] the working sketch is the result of research planning and study [Music] another type of learning experience results from construction work [Music] for economy the shell of the diorama can be made out of a corrugated carton or container [Music] a piece of cardboard for the background and a false base complete the basic materials trees are attached to the false base the diorama is a valuable teaching tool [Music] all right so that was uh part one of the exciting uh how to make and use a diorama trilogy uh let me set up for part two uh which is even more exciting now i'm kidding i'm kidding i'm sorry um i gotta tell you as a kid i love making dioramas i remember making this one of a dinosaur like eating another dinosaur they had like bloody flesh um that are literally made out of tissue that had like red magic marker on it um then like post college a friend of mine had a diorama party where we all sat around you know drank and made dioramas we all had little shoe boxes and we all kind of used newspapers and magazine images and pipe cleaners and we made dioramas surprisingly that was a lot of fun it was really really great so part of this film resonates with me um what made it difficult of course is that the music throughout was going and this is what i guess is happening let's i'm going to geek out just a smidge um this was transferred on a machine and they are transferred at 60 frames a second which is much faster than um you know regular sound film runs which is 24 frames a second but they did this because they had a lot of films that they were transferring uh and so then what happened is the software that transferred it uh extrapolated and slowed down the uh the soundtrack but when it was being scanned um you know it was getting the 60 frames but the audio there was a slight tension variation going right like too much tension too little tension too a little bit attention too excuse me and that's what created the so there you go moral of the story is if you have a sound film don't transfer to 60 frames a second because any little variation uh will be uh in in tension will be a problem down the road all right so to reward slash punish you for watching that film i have behind me on the telesini a bunch of tv trailers and tv trailers if you have been watching um are their little short 15 second 30 second one minute um commercials for films that were running in the 70s and uh they're fascinating and so this i got from a collector who had a bunch of them uh they were stored in his mom's basement there was a flood and so i got these uh and put them all together on big reels so we might have seen some of these before i i can't find notes of what i've seen so uh bear with me and also you might see the same commercial multiple times uh they all came on these little tiny reels that we all spliced together so it was all done kind of randomly so here's tv trailers real d enjoy bad guys a hot car and a million bucks the good guys have the car and the money the bad guys have the guns in the muscle and now they're gonna have it out out of town out of control out of their minds and definitely over the limit stingray
