do hi everybody welcome to the avgeeks lunchtime streaming show let me turn off this speaker so i don't get a weird feedback um anyways i'm skip alzheimer av geeks we watch old educational films and other 16 millimeter things and what we just saw was some beautifully shot kodachrome home movie footage of a trip to alaska maybe not 100 sure there wasn't any um notes um on the can um but beautiful shot and people noticed they said wow this is really good for a home movie and you know what makes it really good is the fact that you know it's not too dark it they hold it steady uh the camera's steady and they um let the shots linger um different people shot home movies differently and some people basically were trying to um do it to where oh i'm sorry my phone's ringing all these distractions um they would shoot it like a still camera so they would like you know press it down press it down like take a second take a second take a second take a second take a second or they would say they would flip the camera sideways so that you would see it would be uh you know like a cell phone a smartphone shot video um all that is is people who just didn't have experience and didn't understand they didn't get that immediate feedback of what they were shooting um and what they were seeing [Music] until you know weeks later when they had the film process and they looked and like oops so uh uh people are asking me about my shirt so this is a photo from the 80s of a beloved meteorologist in raleigh who worked at wral his name was greg fischel he no longer works there but what's funny is he is still loves on his facebook uh page loves talking about the weather in raleigh and so uh there's a whole thing about winter weather so he like chimes in whenever there's winter weather like potential snow or when there's a potential for hurricane he loves chiming in and looking at the reports and he does this he doesn't make money doing this he just does it because he loves to do it so this is i i got this when he still worked at wral and this is not an official shirt this is uh just i'm a fanboy so there you go uh this next film is uh i think it's actually called puppy trouble it's not called dog training so enjoy [Music] all animals serve man without the domestic animal it would be difficult for us to exist [Music] they supply our most essential food [Music] they furnish a large part of the clothing we wear in the work life of the nation they do much of our manual labor in return for these services we must fulfill our responsibility by caring for the animal's health and welfare they must be watered they must be fed their sleeping quarters kept clean [Music] while young they must be trained and prepared for their ultimate jobs the dog aids man in other ways in time of war his work is of a serious nature in time of peace he acts as our the dog's duties may lie in the sporting field this world they are expanding the elite of his world are governed by the american kennel club where detailed records are kept of each registered dog's history and achievements there are humane societies to help care for and guard every dog against ill treatment when necessary these societies have laws enforced for his protection [Music] the standards of each breed are maintained in the show ring this is where the bent show champions are made [Music] in a trial such as this a dog wins obedience titles permitting the use of letters after his name the equivalent of a phd [Music] and there are schools where he may learn the good manners that every pet should know this might be called a prep school of dogdoms [Music] teaching the proper feeding care and training that should begin early [Music] the young learn quickly the pleasure of this responsibility [Music] the general public may be informed of what's right and what's wrong through radio broadcasts through specialized dog film through magazines newspapers and books one such book is this where the author stresses the fact it's not the dog that needs training but the owner [Music] we admit we like dogs but not at night under these circumstances golly could i choke that one just wait until your missy gets home you'll catch it i couldn't figure it out but it happened every time i made a fuss something scandalous [Music] i never knew when i was completely alone and when i wasn't [Music] she must have had the patience of job but gradually on what it was all about [Music] now when i bought always a sudden crash i never knew what that mean i stay on the floor now but older and like to steal i got my nose slapped [Music] sometimes the smells were so tempting but i knew they would be watching [Music] it was such fun chasing cars and horseback riders but i soon learned my lesson when i got chased instead that wasn't any fun [Music] my pal trixie was killed that way [Music] my life's gayer and i didn't always like my collar and lead now i love going for a walk when we pass through a doorway i am considered well-mannered i wait for my missy to go first [Music] if our owners are careful how they feed us we feel strong and well naturally we prefer meat either raw or cooked and please don't cut off the fat we need that for our coke they're very tasty when moistened with boiling water or hot soup [Music] minerals vitamins and cod liver oil are important for our health we'll be better looking pups if they're in our diet [Music] being creatures of habit we like to be fed at regular hours we're unusually good at telling time one good square meal is worth several daytime snacks [Music] if we refuse our dinner it may mean we're not feeling well the best way to be certain is to take our temperatures [Music] we won't mind not really 101 to 102 is normal but 103 degrees means a quick trip to the veterinarian [Music] we must have fresh clean water and get it whenever we're thirsty that way we drink often and little at a time and don't get sick [Music] testing regularly for worms is a must we may have one of several kinds that can only be seen through a microscope it's an awful feeling to be lost help us feel safe see that every year we have a license tag and nameplate attached to our callers this way our names and addresses are registered and our owners can quickly be located it was weeks before brownie was reunited with jimmy because she had no license tag a bath is always welcome any coal tar product will do the work before starting to bathe stuff our ears with cotton to keep the water out [Music] if you wet us with plenty of warm water we selfies here [Music] oh that does feel good [Music] thorough rinsing makes our coat shine a brisk rubbing dries as quickly keeps us from catching cold [Music] if the tartar is scraped from our teeth they'll be white and beautiful like our owners we want to keep our nice teeth we need them for those big knuckle bones a swab dipped in alcohol or ether removes the wax from our ears if this is done regularly we might avoid that painful tanker trouble that so many of us have [Music] keep our nails cut when they grow long we get flat feet filing they'll keep short and we won't damage stockings and rugs after a final combing we are ready for the day's adventure [Music] they're all dogs and they live only for their masters [Applause] [Music] uh sorry about the dog getting hit there i know that uh sometimes but what's interesting is uh people don't like when dogs or animals get hurt people that's fine they get hit by cars all the time but uh they some folks don't like it when an animal gets hurt but that dog obviously didn't get hurt so um but what an interesting film fascinating all right so behind me i've got a telecini setup and this is a device that we use to transfer films live um it basically goes from there's a little camera here there's a little sensor here that uh registers perfs and takes a flash every time there's a new frame then that goes through a box over here which then converts into a box over here box right here um which then goes into this computer which i can't turn the webcam to see the computer um and then it gets funneled into you get pumped into the world uh and so the film we got set up here is called a special trade enjoy [Music] um [Music] [Music] old batholi is nellie's neighbor when nelly was very small every day pathology would take her for a walk down the block bartholomew never pushed too fast he always warned nelly about mr oliver's bumpy driveway hang on now here comes a bump [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] if they met a nice dog along the way they'd stop and pet it [Music] away [Music] [Music] whenever mrs pringle's sprinkler was on nelly knew just what the follow me would say get ready get set swiftly then scurry straight into the water fearlessly through the spring and mrs pringle loved to watch nelly waited his pathology dried off his glasses the thought of you knew what nellie was thinking she wanted him to play a tune on his harmonica [Music] when nellie began to walk pathology took her by the hand but nearly didn't want any help [Music] so bartholomew offered his hand only when she really needed it come on ginger rogers let's dance [Music] [Applause] nelly was four years old the following year was getting older too he now needed a walking stick and so they walked slowly the neighbors who loved to stop and chat also loved the sight of mellie and betharmu and called them ham and eggs because they were always together even on halloween [Music] [Applause] [Music] uh [Music] ah yes an original picasso and then crayon too one rainy winter day bartholomew taught nellie to skate by circling his umbrella oh easy does it kiddo yeah that's right when she skated right over his toes the thought of you wasn't mad it just reminded him of a story now did i ever tell you about the time a 1949 desoto backed up over my foot [Music] a little skating music please good idea [Music] it'll make you feel more graceful now the first time nellie tried to skate all by herself she put on a show for bartholomew and mrs pringle hey look at me [Music] when she fell the following saw that she felt like crying he pulled up a radish from the garden and said don't be saddish have a radish nelly laughed like the radish she didn't really like that issues but she did like bartholomew [Music] nellie could now make it up the stairs quickly all by herself but mythology needed to climb them slowly [Music] when nellie had been in school for several years the thomas had gotten even older thanks nell that's a real work of art you know either i'm getting handsomer my old age or you're learning to draw better goodbye goodbye nell sometimes pathology needed a helping hand but he didn't like to take one so nellie held out a hand only when lethal you really needed [Music] but however with all of you had to stop and rest nelly would beg for a story about the old days and if your mother hadn't found out you were hiding in that cardboard box i probably would have gone ahead and mailed it to australia with you still in it and you'd be living with a kangaroo family right now and riding around in somebody's pouch oh yes i think so i think so yes will we ever run out of things to talk about well if we do we just won't say anything good friends can do that you know [Music] some days they just took it easy and sat on the porch the following year would play a tune on monitor [Music] happy birthday [Music] [Applause] [Music] one day litholim went out alone and fell down the stairs [Music] an ambulance with the red flasher and a siren took him to the hospital [Music] bartholomew was gone for a long time so nellie waited every day after school [Music] [Music] [Music] nelly wrote with all of you every day she always ended with come back soon so we can go for walks again [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] when bethany came home he was in a wheelchair the smile was gone from his eyes [Music] but his friends were happy to see him again [Music] and happiest of all was nelly [Music] [Applause] [Music] well now looks like our walks are over no they're not i can take you for walks now and i know just how to do it too nice and easy not too fast [Music] all right get ready [Music] every day no matter what else she would do nelly would go for a wall with bartholomew [Music] if they saw a nice dog along the way they'd stop and pet it [Music] [Music] but if it was a mean dog nelly would shoo it away [Music] one day when the sprinkler was on in mrs pringle's garden nearly got a fun idea something she remembered from a long time ago bartholomew remembered it too all right bartholomew ready set chat [Music] [Applause] that wasn't fun i hope your wheelchair won't rust by following you middlestick who cares if it does oh nelly it seems like only yesterday that bartholomew was pushing you in the stroller that was when i was little now it's my turn to push him by thumb his turn to sit it's kind of like a trade mrs pringle yeah like a trade [Music] then they sat in the sun to dry mythology munched happily on a carrot and listened as nellie played the tune she had just learned on the thalamus harmonica nellie could see the old smile with back in the bathtub's eyes [Music] i feel like we've seen the film exactly like that um i think although the uh older person has a stroke and then younger person pushes him around in a wheelchair um common themes uh somebody asked me on uh in the comments if i had seen archive 81 yet and this is one of many uh inquiries that people have done over the last couple of days i guess this is a netflix show about someone who digitizes old film and video and it's a horror a series so uh i need to see it we'll see it's it's fascinating other times that uh the job of what i do and what we do at av geeks has been portrayed in the past uh i think in that early michael mann film manhunter with the um it was the early portrayal of um serial killers uh what's his name it was in silence of the lambs i can't remember his name anyways so in that uh spoilers serial killer uh transfers old home movies and that's how he finds out about people's houses um then in zodiac one of the potential uh suspects of the zodiac killer is um a film collector so i'm like i was in the theater going come on man really so i think there's something about what we do and why we do it that enters into this little creepiness and there certainly is creepy stuff that we have shown here on av geeks and we have certainly transferred for people um where we're just like but uh let's watch about bus drivers enjoy every day people ride buses to places near and far today we are taking a long bus ride here in the bus station we must first buy a ticket george and his father are buying their tickets now they are just in time for our bus is coming into the station it is big and powerful mr fisher drives our bus he has driven buses for many years this man tells us when the bus is ready he talks to the loud speaker 730 coach for somerville easton harrisburg bedford pittsburgh and the west time to go many people are going with us the porter puts away our baggage in a space under the seats mr fischer takes george's ticket inside the passengers are finding their seats george likes to sit in front so he can watch the driver before mr fisher starts the bus he closes the door and starts the motor then he backs the bus away out of the station we go and on our way right on time too mr fisher drives carefully in crowded city streets watching out for cars and people he switches a signal a signal to warn drivers behind him that he wants to make a turn one last look at the tall buildings as we leave the city behind soon we are out on the open highway a highway that is like a river flowing from city to city cars buses and trucks roll over it day and night george likes to see the big trucks like these hauling all kinds of goods to factories and stores but mr fisher keeps his eyes on the road watching the road and the other cars all the time a traffic light stops us we will lose a minute or two here and mr fisher has to keep track of the time 9 56 he's still on schedule but now the stop light is changing to go he shifts gears he moves ahead quickly he still has many miles of driving to do he knows just how fast to go on each part of the road to keep on time and to drive safely now watch this driver coming out of a side road mr fisher has to look out for all kinds of careless drivers on the highway he sees in a big mirror cars coming from behind here comes a car passed now and here comes another mr fisher always drives safely and never passes another car when he can't see the road ahead now we are riding through a fine farm country look there farm boys and girls wishing the driver good luck as we roll onward the train is coming but we'd need not stop for trains our highway goes under the railroad through this underpass as our bus goes on the passengers are having a pleasant time some watch the scenery others read while others find napping the most pleasant way to travel look ahead there's a car stalled on the highway our driver puts on the brake and he turns out carefully the driver must be ready to act quickly [Music] at last we're coming into another city [Music] the bus turns into a station much like the one from which we started here some of the passengers are leaving us this is the end of the trip for mr fisher too and so george tells him goodbye a new driver mr thompson will take us on from here mr fisher turns over the tickets everything in order mr thompson is ready to go to work soon we are leaving the city on the second part of our trip we cross a broad beautiful river out on the road mr thompson settles to his work in a little while we reach the entrance to a great superhighway on this wide super highway mr thompson can drive more safely and more easily and passengers can ride more comfortably too cars that cross this highway have to use bridges overhead like this one wide separate lanes and well-built curves mean faster safer driving we are nearing a mountain ridge it is a high wall across our path but we plunge into this tunnel and right through the mountain out on the other side and down the mountainside into the valley beyond now we come to a place where the bus stops to give us a short rest a place to stretch our legs and to eat lunch a nice lunch room by the side of the highway while george and his father and the other passengers have lunch mr thompson makes sure the tires have plenty of air he looks at the big motor to see that it has plenty of water and oil now he can go to lunch too in a little while we are on our way again the passengers settle down for the last hours of the trip mile after mile goes by as mr thompson drives on now we cross a valley a valley of steel mills and factories we're nearing the end of our long ride mr thompson's work for the day is almost over the passengers get ready to leave the bus hats and coats go on journey's end mr thompson has driven another long bus trip safely and on time tomorrow he will drive back over the same road now it's goodbye to mr thompson and goodbye to george let's hope we'll take a bus trip together again very soon i always forget that uh these early eb films don't have play out music um they don't have any music at all i mean that's what's really fascinating about the early ones is uh there's no transition in there's no transition out it's just like the end and then there's if we're lucky we see a rotating globe ah let's see i got one more film set up on the telecini it's we're gonna run late again today but that's fine because you guys like watching films and i like showing them so this one is the titles clip but it's shoemaker and the elves enjoy bad one afternoon the shoemaker's wife got ready as usual to go to the market for food for supper what would they do all they had in the house was enough leather to make one pair of shoes well the wife said better to work than be idle i guess so said the shoemaker i'll cut up the leather and make a pair of shoes tomorrow [Music] so they went to bed that night hungry and worried not knowing that something magical was going to happen [Music] um [Music] a miracle and so well done the shoemaker's wife couldn't believe it then another miracle a customer the shoemaker forgot all about the new shoes when the gentleman said he needed a heel nailed back on his left shoe [Music] do very nice [Music] so [Music] [Music] well well money for food and for enough leather to make two pairs of shoes forgetting all about the mystery of the night before the shoemaker cut the leather for two pairs of shoes that he himself would make the very next day do you suppose [Music] so [Applause] [Music] yes it had happened again this time it wasn't quite so hard to believe the thing to do was sell the shoes at the market buy more leather cut it out and leave it on the workbench maybe this very nice miracle would happen a third time hmm [Music] so [Music] yep four pairs of lovely shoes well the shoemaker thought he'd certainly work hard all day every day cutting out leather as long as some magic hands turned them into shoes at night and they did and it went on and on and by now the shoemaker and his wife were working late every night getting ready for those magic hands that were making the shoemaker a rich man one night the shoemaker said to his wife let's stop now it's time to do what we said we'd do yes they were going to peak [Music] [Music] well they were astonished and ashamed those little elves have done so much for them so they decided to do something in return the shoemaker's wife made pretty clothes for the elves to wear instead of just aprons and this time instead of pieces of leather they laid out the new clothes on the workbench of course they had to peek again to see what would happen [Music] foreign [Music] uh [Music] the elves danced with joy they were so delighted with their new clothes [Music] hey [Music] they had danced right out of the window but they left messages embroidered on their old aprons [Music] long life and and happiness and peace for the rest of your lives the rest of their lives and the elves never came back [Music] [Music] the institute for film and build um i'm not sure that that's how that that fairy tale plays out i i can't remember because of that warner brothers cartoon with elmer fudd as the shoemaker that then turns into this whole thing about free market economy and about investing in business and um profits etc uh that has wipes clean the slate um that um what the actual thing is but i don't i don't know you know we often look to these uh fairy tales for uh morals to give us a moral to the story like well this is what you learned because like he said esops fables all have morals that we learn but with these like grim fairy tales and with these um hence christian andersen tales i don't i don't think that they necessarily have good uh morals uh good takeaways um but uh i appreciate you watching today um so tomorrow uh depending on what's happening with the weather i will either be at the archive or i'll be broadcasting from home um there might be snow and the thing is i don't think it's gonna be a lot of snow but people in uh raleigh or idiots when it comes to driving and precipitation so i'm not looking to come here if if that's the case i'll just stay home because i've seen horrible behavior uh anyways if you like what you saw you can buy some coffee uh you can go to ko-fi.com av geeks uh you can also hit the like a thumbs up the hey we like what you're doing buttons uh in your various social medias we appreciate that and we appreciate you um yeah look inside the film can and ask you to please rewind and love each other and i think that's a good idea so everybody have a great rest of your thursday and we'll see you tomorrow somewhere somehow
