so so so so so so so so so so so so so so hello everybody sorry where am i i'm invisible hey this is skip alzheimer welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show um i was helping with a focus issue on one of the scanners and missed the exciting conclusion to uh car crash test footage uh that we just saw uh did i say i'm skip alzheimer did i say that this is the av geeks lunchtime streaming show those are important bits of information because we watch old 16 millimeter films here and uh that last film i got from the texas department of public safety and it's obviously it's raw footage of some tests that they did car crash tests um beautiful stuff if you like car crashes and nobody's in the car so you can feel pretty good about that um you can get your jg ballard car crash fetish on with this without feeling bad about people getting hurt um so what are we doing we're watching some films this next film is uh it's kind of a weird thing it's a newsreel supposedly made by kids for kids i i don't know it's it's kind of a weird concept but let's watch this is a kitty camera enjoy [Music] your camera is flying high maybe you won't believe your eyes but that's really a flying saucer you see floating through the air hey it's a thrilling pastime for these boys an educational too who knows many promising spacemen may be developed from playing this game [Music] kitty camera goes to school acrobat school that is tomorrow's circus and carnival acrobats go into training which means that we will soon have a new crop of thrilling stunters doing flips cartwheels walking the tightrope and even skipping ropes [Music] [Applause] [Music] me [Music] it takes years of training to make a good circus acrobat and one cannot start too young they're good now so as they get older they can only become terrific as we say in the circus [Music] [Applause] it was a different time um wow yeah that wouldn't uh pass a muster now it'd be like yeah so you're doing this fun gymnastics thing um can we film it um and the younger kids aren't wearing anything besides their underpants sure why not you notice the older kids uh the girls were wearing tops um so at some point they were like well you know what she needs to wear a top um wow just such a strange thing i think i have a couple more of those i got those uh we scanned those for albert stagg who is a uh film collector uh out of uh massachusetts and uh it's just kind of crazy all right so um some of this is a continuation of other conversations we had and one of them is how to parallel park um like i admitted yesterday i don't know how to parallel park really well it takes me a couple of tries um and it's embarrassing and i get anxious uh so this i should watch this film backing into a stall how to back into a stall or do you know what skills on hills are important let's think for a moment about these things because actually these are two important skills in driving the car why do we need to know how to back into install in fact what is a stall and what is backing into a stall we need to know how to back into a stall because we're going to need to use this skill in our driving career we'll need to use it for instance in backing into a garage someday and you may find that it's necessary for you to back into your garage at home because it's easier to leave remember it's better to pull in the traffic forward than the back end the traffic so to avoid backing into traffic you may need to back into your garage or you may be in a parking lot perhaps out in a shopping area and need to back into a stall not only that but backing into a stall develops good skills of judging the position of fenders so backing into a stall is a good practice skill a good practice lesson how do you do it first drive past the stall your rear bumper should be six to eight feet past the stall before you stop signal in fact signal well in advance then ease back slowly turning the wheel sharply to the right as the car goes into the stall and you must judge again both at rear right and rear left fender straighten the wheel let the car move slowly back until the rear wheels rest gently against the curb i want to show you how this looks when the maneuver is actually being accomplished remember the car first goes past the stall signal is made well in advance check your positioning on the stall and stop the car now place the car in reverse of course back slowly and turn the wheel rapidly and you notice the hand over hand method of turning the wheel keep checking both rear fenders as you enter the stall straighten the wheels let the car go back slowly until the rear wheels rest against the curb leaving the stall although a simple maneuver is still always a dangerous maneuver because it means you must come out into the stream of traffic so first check that traffic when clear pull straight out until the right side of your automobile will clear all obstacles now you do this pull out maneuver at least the beginning of it with the wheel straight then turn hard to the right when you're sure you can clear on the right side now we'll get into the car and see how this maneuver looks in practice check traffic both directions move straight ahead without turning then when you're sure the right side will clear make a sharp turn to the right and continue in the traffic stream let's consider now the skills on hills these are important skills many people have the mistaken idea that since they live in a rather flat area they do not need to be concerned about driving on hills and having skills and maneuvering the car on hill this is a mistaken idea because in today's mobile population people move all over the country drive all over the country as a result you may very well be driving on hills even though you do not live in the immediate area of hills in practicing on hills of course we must first learn to stop on an upgrade this is again a rather simple maneuver yet an important one first as always signal your intention to stop then stop smoothly near the right curve and remember the force of gravity is helping stop the car therefore not nearly as much pressure as needed on the brake pedal to make this kind of a stop now let's think about starting an upgrade what skills are important in starting on an upgrade well we must be able to make a smooth start and we must be able to make that start without rolling backward into the car behind at the same time without abusing our automobile proper use of the car in other words on a mild upgrade this is not a great problem it simply means that when traffic is cleared and it's time to move we make a very sudden move with our right foot from the brake to the accelerator and press smoothly on the accelerator let's go into traffic in the car and watch the practice of this maneuver traffic is cleared the foot moves very rapidly to the accelerator presses gently on the accelerator a check of traffic with the signal and if you have shifted to the low position you shift of course back to drive but how about the steep upgrade this is presents the problem for most drivers especially when they're just learning to drive well of course when we have stopped on the steep upgrade we have to think a little more about the skill of starting smoothly here so we apply the hand brake rather than using the foot frame and shift to the low range definitely here check traffic push gently on the accelerator this is with the parking brake on we have applied the handbrake as we feel the engine begin to strain against that handbrake release the handbrake that means the car will then move forward and not roll backwards and as we gain momentum of course move the selector to dry i want you to see again how this maneuver looks in the automobile check traffic signal the stop apply the handbrake move the right foot over to the accelerator as the car begins to move release the handbrake of course again check your traffic and move into the flow of traffic shifting to the drive position as you gain momentum there's another method for starting on a steep upgrade for the automobile with the automatic transmission this method is by using both feet rather than the hand brake that is the left foot on the foot brake the right foot on the accelerator the procedure is very much the same from there press on the accelerator until the car begins to strain to move forward then release the pressure with your left foot thus releasing the brake and the car will move forward now we know how to maneuver the car we of course need to go out and practice these skills but there are other skills that you must know on the hill skills of parking the car this is really more knowledge than skill but it is very very important many many drivers every year fail to park correctly and very often park illegally and the car gets away on the hill driverless and causes an accident here's our small car that we can use again to demonstrate proper methods for parking on a hill first the upgrade of course signal and stop near the curve then move the car slowly forward and turn the wheel sharply away from the curve that is to the left under normal circumstances stop the car and the right front wheel here should be about one foot from the curb release the brake lightly so that the car rolls slowly backward until the right front wheel touches the curb thus holding the car then of course stop the engine now let's see how this looks in the practice maneuver be sure to signal well in advance move the car to the right side near the curve pull slowly forward and turn the wheel sharply to the left then allow the car to roll back until the tire touches the curb and don't forget this is in addition to using the parking brake and the parking gear now parking downhill let's bring our small model car here to the downhill grade what precautions do we need to take in parking downhill well of course again in practicing and in practice signal and stop near the curve roll slowly forward and turn the wheel sharply to the right until the right front wheel touches the curb thus holding the car on the hill then go through the procedure for stopping the engine now let's take a look at a film of this practice maneuver as always signal well in advance move the car to the right side near the curb and come to a complete stop then allow the car to roll slowly forward and turn the wheel sharply to the right until the right front tire touches the curb and use this maneuver when there is not a curb for parking either uphill or downhill after you have turned the wheels into the curb of course stop the engine this is just as much as much a part of driving as actually maneuvering the automobile and safety is equally an important factor here now you will automatically build safety into your skills if you will follow these safeguards on hills remember three things keep the car from rolling away after you have left it first by turning the wheels into the curb the proper direction the car will be held by the wheels actually resting against the curb second using the parking brake putting on the proper parking brake firmly and the third skill using the gears to hold the car and that would mean either the parking gear or in some cars reverse gear if you practice these three skills and use them you will not need to worry about your car rolling away and causing one of these driverless accidents how do you acquire these skills well actually you acquire them by developing developing them into habits so that you automatically do these things whenever you park on a hill and you develop habits by practicing even though this is not a difficult skill in terms of maneuvering the car go out and practice so that it becomes a habit and you will then be a safe driver on hill [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] this is national educational television um so that was educational television circa 1959 um somebody mike found online a reference to the series there were 20 episodes featuring our old pal harry wow amazingly dull even even for us who have lengthen our attention spans that one was hundreds of other princesses who would have said oh yes thank you do you think she did no let me tell you the story on the grave of the prince's father grew a rose tree oh such a lovely tree it was but it bloomed only once every five years and even then bore but a single rose but this one rose had a fragrance so sweet that one sniff made you forget all your sorrows and troubles and the prince also had a nightingale which could sing as if it had every lovely tune inside its little throat he would give that rose and that nightingale to the emperor's daughter [Applause] [Music] cool [Music] bye oh i do hope it's a [ __ ] cat said the princess [Music] it is very cleverly made said all the maidservants it is more than clever said the emperor it is pretty it is not hand fashioned it's real said all the maidservants it's real [Music] well let's first see what's in the other box before we get upset said the emperor [Music] superb said all the mate servants it's extraordinary how much that bird reminds me of her late majesty's music box exactly the same tone the same expression so it has said the emperor but that can't be real too said the princess oh but it is your highness it's a real live bird in that case let it fly away said the princess and she refused to receive the prince at all but of course that didn't discourage him [Music] so [Music] [Music] good morning emperor he said could i get a job at your castle well there are so many people asking for work here but let me think i do need a man to tend the pigs we have so many pigs so the prince was appointed imperial swineherd all the day he sat working and by evening he had made a clever little pot with bells all around it as soon as the pot boiled the bells tinkled out this charming old tune ah augustine everything's gone gone gone but the most clever thing about it was that when you held your finger in the steam from the pot you could instantly smell whatever food was being cooked on every stove in the town [Music] now that was something else than a rose [Music] why that's my tune said the princess it was in fact the only two she knew this must be a cultured swineherd go ask him what he wants for that instrument how much do you want for that pot i want 10 kisses from the princess good gracious i won't take less well what did he say i really can't repeat it your highness it's too dreadful then whisper it oh how naughty [Music] wait ask him if he'll take 10 kisses from my maids no thank you said the swineherd ten kisses from the princess or i keep my pot oh how annoying said the princess well you maids will just have to stand all around me so no one can see [Music] my goodness what fun they did have all night and all day they kept the pot boiling there wasn't a stove in the town on which they didn't know what was being cooked whether it was the lord mayors or the shoemakers we know who's going to have cereal and pancakes we know who's going to have porridge and chops isn't that exciting [Music] the swine heard that is the prince but you see they all thought he was really a swineherd didn't let a day go by without making something and next he made a little whirly gig when it was swung around it played all the waltzes jigs and pokers ever known why that's really superb said the princess look go ask that swineherd what he wants for the instrument but no kisses [Applause] [Music] he wants 100 kisses from the princess he must be mad [Music] but art must be encouraged after all i am the emperor's daughter go tell him he can have ten kisses as yesterday the rest he can get from my maids oh but we could never do that cried all the maidservants nonsense said the princess if i can kiss him so can you remember it is i who give you your pay and keep so the maidservant had to go to the swineherd once again 100 kisses from the princess he said or i keep my whirly gig stand around the princess ordered [Music] what is going on down there in the pigpen said the emperor why it's the maidservants up to something i'd better go down and have a look [Music] the maids were so busy counting for it had to be fair the swineherd shouldn't have too many nor too few kisses that they didn't notice the emperor at all well i never he said get out of here and both the princess and the swineherd were banished from his kingdom poor me said the princess if only i had taken the charming prince how alas i am [Applause] i have grown to despise you princess said the prince you wouldn't have an honest prince you didn't appreciate the rose nor the nightingale but a swine heard you could kiss for the sake of a musical toy i am through with you [Music] [Music] everything's gone [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] so the moral of that story is don't take relationship advice from hans christian anderson under no circumstances um i mean he brought his little mermaid he brought his steadfast tin soldier yeah do not under any circumstances all right uh let's see what we got um so yesterday we watched uh east river tunnel it was uh in the 70s and this one is the hudson river how to put a tunnel in the hudson river uh and i got this uh i did some work from library congress and so i have some films that they scanned um and so this is conquest of the hudson so we're going to do the other river and much earlier so enjoy [Music] through the heart of a great metropolis flows a mighty hudson river a natural barrier between two states a challenge to man's ingenuity skill and courage [Music] new york and new jersey created a joint agency the port of new york authority as a result of cooperation between states a great bridge now spans the wide river the george washington bridge and beneath the river lies the holland tunnel the busiest highway in the world to date more than 100 million cars have driven through it [Music] still a mounting tide of traffic seeks a river crossing down manhattan's west side over new jersey skyway a tremendous stream of passenger cars trucks and buses demands a fast route from shore to shore [Music] port authority engineers study traffic trends [Music] the sharp upward curve means that existing facilities will soon be overcrowded another crossing is needed to serve the congested midtown area the lincoln tunnel is located between the george washington bridge and the holland tunnel to keep the river clear for shipping it was decided to build a tunnel rather than a bridge nearly 100 feet below the surface of the river similar in design to the holland tunnel [Music] its outer wall is a huge cast iron pipe 31 feet in diameter and through it a roadway is constructed [Music] and so the lincoln tunnel is started derricks and steam shovels get underway surveyors chop the course drills are forged they must be sharp at all times for it is necessary to drill through solid rock [Music] powerful air compressors are installed to counteract the weight of water and silt all tunneling is done in compressed air chambers [Music] men most important of all are now selected to work under compressed air a hard and dangerous job every precaution is taken to safeguard them under pressure work is a strain on heart and lungs there is danger also of contracting an illness called the bends applicants are tested in a hospital lock this sensation is similar to that of deep sea diving [Music] [Applause] he is holding his nose and blowing through his mouth to open up the passage leading from throat to air thereby equalizing the air pressure against his eardrums [Music] this man who has now passed his test is called a sand hog and receives the compressed air workers bag which he will wear at all times [Music] a caisson or huge steel box has been fabricated in a shipyard launched towed up the river and anchored ready for sinking muck is dug out until the caisson settles on bedrock to which it is sealed the case on is the target toward which two tunnel crews will aim as it is sunk concrete is poured into the walls of the caisson and its steel sides are gradually built up [Music] the two rings at the top will be sunk to the bottom of the river and will be part of the tunnel [Music] meanwhile with drill and dynamite deep land shafts are sunk on both shores [Music] [Applause] at the bottom of each land shaft a huge machine weighing about 400 tons is assembled [Applause] [Music] so [Music] this is the shield the sandhog's work chamber during the long drive under the hudson at the front of the shield is a sharp cutting edge which pours through the riverbed much as an apple corer bores through an apple the shield advances through soft mud this mud or silt is either pushed aside or swallowed up by the shield through a mouth or opening in its face [Music] 28 huge jacks push the massive shield forward [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] let's join a crew of sandhog as they start on the day's job under the river they must stay in the airlock a few minutes until the air pressure is built up to equal that in which they will work it is different when they return from work then they must be gradually decompressed which takes a much longer time this whole process is for the protection of compressed air workers [Music] inside the tunnel under compressed air while overhead all sorts of river craft and great ocean liners sail by [Music] ready for a shove [Music] jacks push against the iron tunnel ring and move the shield forward 5 10 15 20 25 30 inches making room for a new ring of tunnel segments mud oozes into the shield sand hogs cut it into pieces and loaded on conveyors which carry it to the rear of the tunnel [Music] tunnel segments are stored at the site of construction before being sent down into the tunnel they are inspected and cleaned then loaded on cars and lowered by elevator [Music] each segment weighs more than a ton and a half [Music] the erector arm grabs the heavy segment and puts it in its proper place the arm can be rotated and telescoped in and out its end grasps the heavy segments like a huge mechanical hand [Music] [Music] each tunnel ring is made up of 14 segments and a key piece [Music] many as 18 cycles which means 18 shoves and 18 rings have been completed in a day's work driving through still takes about an hour and a half to construct one ring [Music] the key segment makes the ring complete [Music] these husky sand hogs give boats a preliminary tightening first with a hand ratchet wrench [Music] the hydraulic bolt tightener finishes the job [Music] in the new jersey shield we are heading straight toward the caisson at the rate of 40 feet a day because it is boring through rock the new york shield is heading toward us at a slower rate the tunnel ring is right up against the jacks at the back of the shield here goes the next shove to complete one tube of the tunnel 2 370 rings are erected more than a quarter of a million boats hold the segments and rings together the surveyor's job is to keep the shield on the right course as it is pushed through the riverbed sandhogs work day and night building the iron tunnel shell at this point one year's work has been accomplished [Music] falling through the two shields meet within a quarter of an inch these men have something to celebrate they are the first to travel from new jersey to new york through the lincoln tunnel [Music] hmm the river silt left in the tunnel during construction is cleaned out [Music] joint side tightly caulk to make the tunnel watertight [Music] a lining of concrete is poured into the iron tunnel a roadway is built with an air passage above and below it above the roadway glass tiles are installed for the ceiling they are placed upside down on specially prepared paper there are nearly a million of these tiles in the tunnel ceiling [Music] when the tiles are set the paper is removed [Music] miles of gleaming white wall tile brighten the tunnel interior the wall tile is ceramic [Music] ventilation is an important safety feature of the lincoln tunnel [Music] [Applause] in these buildings are housed fans and other equipment to keep the tunnel air pure and healthy and eliminate dangerous carbon monoxide gas from automobile exhaust [Music] huge blower fans supply fresh air while exhaust fans suck vitiated air out of the tunnel [Music] [Applause] [Music] an air duct carries fresh air down from the towers to the tunnel then send the curb admit air to the roadway the air of the tunnel can be completely renewed every minute and a half [Music] fresh air is blown in under the roadway and rises gently it is mixed with the gases exhausted by automobiles this air and gas mixture is stuck through openings in the ceiling into an upper duct and drawn out in weehawken new jersey a great canyon was gouged out of rocky cliffs to provide approach connection linking the tunnel with all the major highways of the area [Music] while in manhattan a plaza and a new north and south avenue between 9th and 10th avenues provide connections with six crosstown streets from 34th to 42nd street and give quick access to and from the tunnel in all directions [Music] three years and seven months it took to complete one tube of the lincoln tunnel it opened to traffic december 22nd 1937. through the lincoln tunnel traffic moves with speed and safety a hundred feet below the river a new link joins the states of new jersey and new york a great engineering piece a great highway a new conquest of the hudson [Music] um it's still fascinating to me i i guess um every time i go through the lincoln tunnel or any of these tunnels i'm still fascinated by it the architecture the construction all aspects of it you know when i'm driving i i can't think too much about it but it is quite interesting to see and we learned about a new job a sandhog and potentially same pay grade as a ham sniffer but um yeah i mean these had to be built and this kind of documented how that happened so
