so so so so so so so so hello everybody i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the av gigs lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films and um talk about them in the comments while we eat our lunch my wife made me a bento box um which featured some leftover curry ramen and she had put the the cut up chicken in the face of us in the position of a smiley face and i was going to show you but unfortunately i dropped the whole thing on the floor so i was able to rescue it but not the face and the floor was relatively clean i don't know five second rule i don't know maybe more information you want to know uh so speaking of more information then you want to know that last film we watched was uh part of a series called ape and the child uh and it was uh a science experiment done by uh winthrop kellogg who did this in the early 30s and he was interested in basically seeing he thought it was really interesting about feral children and i put a link in the comments and so he was like well i'll raise my child with a chimp that's this comparable age and we'll raise them both together and they did this for about nine months and they were done basically the same and as you saw the the chimp exceeded what the the child could do but um essentially the uh it was ceased at nine months and they think it's because um the kid donald um started acting more like a chimp then the chimp acted more like a a child so they kind of put it to an end and um so that's what happened with that you can look it up it's not the happiest story um uh regarding what happened to the chimp but um it's a very odd odd thing very odd okay so um we got some films to watch more films this next film is um showing us how to stay alive stay alive and this is on the telecity behind me enjoy and out assuming that we solve these problems driving a space vehicle could be a part of that future to be confronted with in approaching the moon but the odds are that driving ill right here on earth will have an effect on his life and we're concerned about this more commonplace means of transportation far too many young people are being lost and injured in automobile accidents [Music] is there a way to stop this shocking waste the answer is yes there is a way to stay alive [Music] the incident you have just seen has tragic implications a promising student killed in an automobile accident the characters were fictional yet the incident itself represents a very real situation in this automobile era it just doesn't make sense to educate a future scientist doctor or educator and not teach him how to meet his obligations as a driver let's examine the problem this country the united states is sometimes called a nation on wheels in a way the description is accurate just how many cars do we have anyway well few people realize that the total comes to nearly one car for every three people in the united states this means at least one car per family each car travels three times the distance from new york city to san francisco every year with more and more cars on our highways our traffic problems grow proportionately complex driving situations and increasing traffic demand that we use our highways in more efficient ways of course we're indebted to these cars of ours for much of our social and economic progress but we're paying much too high a price in terms of traffic delays and crashes to complicate the problem our driving public is growing rapidly two and a half million young people reach legal driving age every year and where do these new drivers fit into our statistics well the picture isn't good actually people under 25 years of age make up less than one-fifth of all our licensed drivers yet they are involved in 30 percent of all highway accidents on the basis of miles driven the record of drivers under 20 is still worse this age group has five times as many accidents as the safest age group for each million miles driven if you need more evidence just ask any parent of a teenage boy about the cost of his insurance you got any idea what my liability policy runs with my son driving the car just exactly half again what it would if he didn't these premiums are killing me but what can you do fortunately something is being done as the number of vehicles increases and traffic problems grow the burden upon the drivers becomes much heavier and we know this about traffic accidents most are preventable and most involve human error clearly today's drivers must accept increasing responsibilities driver and traffic education is the best way to achieve these goals as a school official i know that our driver education courses have been effective when young people know how to drive safely and when they strongly want to do so they're taking a long step toward preventing accidents and getting the best use out of our streets and highways they come out of these courses with a good sense of values they become better all around citizens in the first 25 years of driver education it has saved 5 500 lives and prevented one hundred ninety five thousand injuries almost seven hundred million dollars in economic losses have been averted over thirty detailed studies show that high quality driver education actually cuts the number of accidents involving young people in half their violations are greatly reduced too many insurance companies offer reduced premiums to young male drivers who have successfully completed accredited courses and not the least advantage is the increased economy efficiency and enjoyment a good driver receives from his car that this training does pay off is widely recognized by educators all over the country it is encouraging that 7 out of 10 high schools in the united states offer some type of driver education the popularity of the courses is indicated by the fact that over half of the eligible students are enrolled in some type of course and a number of state legislatures have looked with favor upon these programs lawmakers have provided financial aid specifically for driver education in high schools obviously the acceptance of this program among young people parents and schools is widespread despite occasional questions driver education i'm in favor of it but you know i've always thought it was the parents responsibility to see that their kids were good drivers driver education is a good thing sound idea but why in high school isn't this a job for well the police the question of when how and by whom driver education should be taught is extremely important a few boys and girls receive satisfactory driving instructions from their parents but the truth is most of us are very poor driving instructors particularly for our own children we don't have the background the patience or the time we generally pass along our own bad driving habits [Music] developing competent courteous responsible and safe drivers is an exceedingly important task it is not a task which should be the responsibility of law enforcement officers police personnel are neither trained or equipped to do such teaching the place for preparing our youth to drive is in our high schools where there are experienced teachers and a good atmosphere for learning where pupils are accustomed to receiving instruction they are at the proper age level their interest is high they want to learn to drive here the bulk of all future drivers can be reached if left on their own only a very small percentage would ever be adequately trained this instruction is included in the regular academic program it is taught in the classroom and in a dual control card [Music] in the classroom the pupil studies the psychology of the driver the effects of a driver's physical condition on his behavior the natural and man-made laws that govern driving he begins to relate the basic principles to important personal experiences centrifugal force friction gravity power these terms take on real significance equipment is readily available to enrich the teaching these devices help the students recognize their own strengths and weaknesses the personal characteristics which will affect their driving ability [Music] [Music] in the car he has taught the mechanical fundamentals of automobile operation and much more as he becomes increasingly expert he is schooled in various maneuvers [Music] [Music] the goals of the driver education course extend far beyond merely bringing the student to the point of qualifying for a driver's license [Music] field trips and many other practical assignments stimulate his interest give him a better understanding of laws enforcement and highway and traffic improvement each phase of the instruction is aimed at creating a sense of personal duty and increased respect for law and order i think the most important thing we get out of driver's education is respect for other drivers and people in general we stop thinking so much about ourselves and consider the other fellow i guess you could say we become less selfish it makes us safety sensible too there is no question that these courses are giving us our money's worth today the average price of driver education is about 40 per student less than the cost of repairing a smashed vendor by careful administration of funds the amount of money involved can be held below the average the cost of good driver education is really a sound investment in the future it will rather quickly be more than made up in lower insurance premiums and in public money saved through accident prevention in no other way can these lasting values be achieved at anything like such a modest cost but money alone cannot do the job to be successful any course must have a fully qualified instructor an increasing number of colleges are preparing teachers in this growing field and the number of available teachers is at an all-time high the themselves are making schedule adjustments to accommodate the courses if there is a scheduling problem driver education may be given before or after school hours or on saturdays as long as it is a part of the regular curriculum study hall and other available periods may be employed for the in-car phase of the instruction dual control automobiles are essential they are the laboratories where classroom theory is put into practice while the purchase and lease of cars is increasing most of the cars for high school courses are loaned through the cooperation of automobile dealers and manufacturers the school pays only for routine maintenance insurance gas and oil such cooperation is indicative of the enthusiasm driver education generates within the community to build up enthusiasm for good driver education in high schools where such programs do not exist is largely the responsibility of parents and other interested citizens through parent-teacher associations and other civic groups they can focus attention on the need for the courses conferences should be held with school officials to explain the nature of the program its purposes and the results to be expected speakers films and publications to help promote driver education are available through a number of organizations including the american automobile association the association has been active in aiding driver education for over a quarter of a century numerous text materials and training aids have been developed aaa conducts studies to determine the extent and effectiveness of driver education in the united states it has been said that education should be preparation for living but driver education is more than this it is a way to stay alive the day is fast approaching when nearly everyone will want to drive a car as soon as he is legally old enough and the average person will spend the equivalent of eight full work weeks behind the wheel every year driving is an important part of our way of life it brings both values and problems while enjoying the values we must also meet the problems our new drivers must be made to realize that being an expert means more than knowing which gadget to operate they must be prepared to take the responsibilities of our way of life as well as to enjoy its advantages this then is the challenge to give driver education the emphasis it deserves to see that it attains and keeps its place as a regular subject in all of our high schools to achieve orderly and convenient traffic conditions driver education is our greatest home [Music] [Music] two yeah so um early on uh there wasn't driver's education in fact there wasn't even getting licenses or permits it was just you drove then insurance companies started saying hey um a lot of people are getting killed and getting maimed and injured a lot of property damage that we're paying for so they start petitioning uh states to require certification and then started requiring or petitioning to actually teach people how to drive um and so that's kind of where this all came from it's fascinating um inadvertently i have a couple of films about driving this next one is about tunnels specifically building the east river tunnel in new york city enjoy [Music] the metropolitan transportation authority was created to provide faster and more comfortable transportation for the people of this region major engineering problems were involved in the recent mta decision to add 52 miles of new track to the system the biggest problem how to relieve the pressure on existing east river bridges and tunnels with a new crossing a crossing that could handle half a million rail passengers a day between manhattan and queens the solution to the problem a remarkable two-level tunnel that would run under the east river and through welfare island [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] the first task is to reach the level of the tunnel two construction shafts are excavated one on welfare island and one in queens bridge park each shaft is deep enough to contain a ten story building alongside the queen shaft excavation also has begun for an electrical substation of the long island railroad ten thousand cubic yards of soft overburden are removed the water table lies only 10 feet beneath the surface in queens bridge park a single large coffer dam encloses both the shaft and the substation excavation steel sheet piles are driven tightly together to support the earth sides and minimize the inflow of groundwater some 500 feet of the tunnel will run under queens at a depth of 90 feet four sabaquious tubes will traverse the east river linked by a 650-foot tunnel through welfare island the welfare island shaft is sunk at the edge of the west channel this cofferdam is sealed with concrete to prevent flooding overburden is hoisted out in a battleship bucket problem the loose strata beneath the overburden split easily and explosions within 10 feet of the cofferdam may carry through and undermine it solution the shaft is dynamited in 10-foot layers or lifts with no blasting within 10 feet of the cofferdam this rock was excavated by mechanical means for the first two lifts when the tunnel is completed these construction shafts will provide space for ventilation emergency exits and utility cables a boat with a drilling tower bores blast holes in the river bottom a dredge brings up the loose muck on a 24-hour basis they are digging the trench across the west channel into which two of the underwater tubes will be sunk operations here are complicated by heavy river traffic before tidal shifts each day and buy a current that sometimes reaches six knots three large construction companies are sharing the sixty nine and a half million dollar primary contract for the sixty third street tunnel peter cui sons of omaha nebraska morrison newton of boise idaho and slattery associates of new york city an important subcontract has been awarded to wiley manufacturing company of fort deposit maryland to construct the steel hulls of the four underwater tubes precise prefabrication is the key to the wiley operation steel plates and ribs are welded into about 90 sub assemblies which are then assembled into the 375 foot shell for each tube using ship building techniques 10 keel panels are laid on the shipway hood plates attached to the two mid river bulkheads will lock the tubes under water 20 side panels are welded on and 10 top panels the cross-sectional dimensions you're 40-foot square cross braces are installed separating the upper level which will carry transit authority trains from the lower where long island railroad trains will run added next reinforcing steel and conduits for electric cables after water type bulkheads seal both ends of the tube it is ready for phase two concrete outfitting that will turn the shell into the finished cut has tube been completed they are beginning the second cut the third cut is completed mta chairman william ronan and members of the board are on hand as the first tube is launched into the susquehanna river for its voyage to the outfitting site in norfolk virginia graciously hear us o lord in these our supplications and vouchsafe to bestow thy blessing upon this tunnel protect it also both here and on its way to its final destination we ask through christ our lord amen we appreciate very much indeed the work which has been done so well on schedule by the wily management and officers and to cue it morrison and slattery and our congratulations to the workman who has so successfully launched the first section of our tunnel well the first two blinds in the outfitting dock in norfolk virginia a large drill boat anchors just off welfare island the landward ends of the tubes will rest in rock niches blasted from the sloping riverbanks these drills bite into the rock a hundred feet under the surface of the river as a precautionary safety measure charges are not detonated while men are at work in the welfare island tunnel just a few hundred feet to the east [Music] inside welfare island the dimension of the excavation is enlarged to create a cavern feet long for the roof 75 feet high in some areas this huge hole will accommodate the welfare island subway station and access escalators an upper drift first established the route of the station excavation can then proceed in descending levels a precise pattern of holes permits the most with the least amount of explosives first a cut shot is drilled at its vertex a cluster of holes form a v when the charges are fired the v opens toward the surface making an exit or a relief area for surrounding rock dynamite and blasting caps are kept above ground in separate guarded magazines until the holes are ready [Music] detonators afford the critical measure of control in the blasting pattern the relief area is fired first and then the surrounding rock [Music] the excavated cut shot serves as the relief for blasting the adjacent wall steel ribs support the tunnel roof which is 70 feet wide 105 men working three ships around the clock extend the upper drift three and a half feet each day [Music] down in norfolk the track slab is fitted with a final steel grid that will be incorporated into the concrete walls each tube will gain 15 000 tons of concrete in this process lines from the concrete pump will supply opposite sections of the wall simultaneously thus the tube will remain level during the pouring process cement is pumped directly from truck to batching plant aggregate is dumped into the loading bin and conveyed to the mixer [Music] the touch of a button controls the blend concrete is pumped at one cubic yard per minute over the gangway down the drop pipe between the steel forms after the concrete hardens forms are removed and transferred to the next tube docked alongside meantime especially outfitted barge arrives to screed or to level the fist-sized rocks that will constitute the trench floor a traveler set to the gradient spans the pontoons of the barge a problem in this operation is that powerful underwater currents can swirl the screeded rock out of the trench underwater dikes to shield the trenches and later the tubes from the river currents are used shortly before midnight on may 13 1971 a tugboat eases alongside the first tube in chesapeake bay the co2 40 feet high is floating only two feet above the surface a model test has been performed to determine the seaworthiness of the sixteen thousand ton two it is stable against fifteen foot waves hurricane conditions in deep water the tow cable is attached still houses are burned and pried apart the tug boats in the tube set out for new york and the flood tide four and a half days later they arrived to a grand reception in the new york harbor [Music] i said this has been a long time coming hasn't connie and people have been waiting for years for the tunnel to queens and here it is the first section of the prefabricated tunnel it's come all the way from maryland and virginia up to these shores it left last friday at 1201 and it's been that sea all this time being towed by tugs as we stand here all we see is really the top of the tunnel because there's 40 feet of diameter of this tunnel and barely about two feet showing so it's like a big iceberg most of it's underwater but uh when people are actually going through this tube which they will be in a few years in subways new subway to queens which certainly uh sid you're going to be pleased with and new long island railroad service to east midtown manhattan it's going to be interesting to look back on this day with the first section arriving here so this is a banner day [Music] when this massive tube is literally and figuratively put in place it will mark the beginning of this vast network of transit improvements 52 new miles of subway a new long island railroad line is to the east of manhattan with a new terminal and many other major transportation improvements in this the world's largest metropolitan center and the greatest rail network so we greet the tube as it comes under the verrazano bridge welcome and i think it deserves a round of applause for arriving about on time [Music] [Applause] 1500 tons of stone will be piled atop each tube to sink it into the trench it'll be guided into position using laser beams for alignment though 100 feet down in the murky river there's an allowable deviation of only one inch laterally and three inches vertically all four tubes will be in place before the end of 1971. the 63rd street tunnel is underway a monumental mta project carried out with care and precision by 1976 it will be in daily use so [Music] [Applause] [Music] yeah i'm eating an apple sorry love it i mean when you go to new york city now in pretty much any big city there's always some giant project that's going on and it's over budget and it's taking forever but it's kind of fun to see this um i got another film on the telecini uh the title's clipped but i believe it's a summer of johnson holiday which i have no idea what this is about um thank you thomas johnson for the coffee very much appreciated that's one way you can reward us is bias coffee at ko-fi.com um maybe geeks anyways i'm not sure what this film is about summer johnson holiday all right enjoy a time for freedom from school a time to enjoy the beauty of his vast land and to savor the special closeness of family life shared by all navajos johnson is glad for this chance to be with his father for during the summer months his father works as a navajo land guide and is gone from home much of the time but today on one of his rare days off he is building a new feed storage rack and johnson is helping when he can though poverty ridden by most standards johnson's father is a modern forward-looking navajo who firmly believes a better day is ahead for his people having spent much time working in a white man's world he realizes education is the key to a better life for the navajo and is determined johnson will attend high school and if possible college johnson is growing up in a matriarchal society where the mother is the head of the family and generally owns everything except the horses his mother spends her time taking care of the hogan cooking and caring for the new baby in the family who demands much time and attention when not busy with the baby she weaves fine navajo rugs which are an important source of income for the family using wool from her own sheep which she gathers cards and spins into yarn [Music] while johnson likes to watch his mother's practiced fingers weave the multicolored yarn into the yeeba chai pattern of the rug it is still woman's work and he doesn't understand it however the tourists who come seem very interested in watching her work and always want to take pictures of her at the loom [Music] johnson also enjoys spending as much time as he can with his brother wilbur and his little sister rosa who is fond of tagging along after him there is a strong bond which binds the navajo family together a closeness many other peoples do not share it is part of what the navajo family is the responsibility goats he spends his time riding through an unfenced landscape which is unmarred by the signs of the white man's civilization free to go wherever he pleases to savor the feeling of being alone with only his horse [Music] johnson lives in a land of incredible vastness a land where he is dwarfed and overwhelmed by the sheer size of the mesas and monuments which rise a thousand feet or more out of the valley floor a land that tends to engulf and swallow him by its immensity on the plane at the foot of the mesa johnson and two of his friends think it is great fun to race their horses riding as fast as they can often without a saddle and with only a rope or a bridle imagining they are chasing wild mustangs as their great grandfathers did long ago [Music] on these imaginary mustang chases one of johnson's favorite riding companions is nine-year-old harry cly who lives nearby in the valley harry's life is much like johnson's especially during the summer he lives in a hogan like that of johnson though his family is poorer because his father is dead and none of his brothers are old enough to work in jobs off the reservation even if they could find them part of the family income is derived from rugs woven by mrs klein which she sells to the trader or perhaps to one of the tourists who come daily to watch her weave [Music] [Music] posing for tourists photographs also earns dimes and quarters which are much needed to help tide the family through the long cold winter for most navajo families including harry's sheep are an important source of wool food and cash harry like johnson and most other navajo boys spends most of his summer involved with tending the family flock [Music] perry is luckier than johnson in that he sometimes has help with this chore from his sister maryland harry's life in the winter is quite different from johnson's because harry lives too far from a school bus route to attend the day school in caiente he must spend his school year at the bureau of indian affairs boarding school getting to come home to his family only two or three times during the school year the boarding schools are not popular with the navajos because they tend to break down the family unit and to inject too much of the white man's culture into the lives of indian youths an attempt is being made to provide more day schools and more extensive bus routes for indian children living in remote areas [Music] but in spite of his problems harry is a happy young navajo enjoying the close companionship of his family and the beauty of his valley while he can during the brief summer months [Music] eventually summer draws to a close on the last day before school starts johnson walks through the valley for one last time remembering the summer now past for with the coming of school there will be little time for such pleasures the days grow short and winter will soon settle in over the valley [Music] bright and early the next morning johnson and a friend await the coming of the bus that will carry them to caente and school for the beginning of another year each day they must ride this bus 25 miles each way but to johnson this is preferable to attending the bureau of indian affairs boarding school as harry must do when the bus finally unloads johnson quickly finds many of his friends from the previous year and is soon engrossed in playground activities that resemble those of a school anywhere in america as johnson grows older he will have to reconcile the two ways of life he is learning the way of the navajo taught him at home and the way of the white man taught him at school one the peaceful beauty way of his people the other the aggressive materialistic way of modern society ahead is a fork in the trail for johnson must he follow one of these two ways or is there perhaps a middle road which might give him the best of both worlds [Music] so that was um distributed by centron films i mean it's in the centron orange can i don't know ultimately who made it but pretty fascinating all right uh i got some magic for you enjoy tradition now you've all seen magicians some are good and some are lousy i'm a double feature i'm good and lousy these these flowers were loaned to me by a florist here in town he's very very nice chap he has two sons one's a budding genius the other is a bloomin idiot this this is my little uh my little pet skunk elmer he's quite a nice little fellow and he gets to know him he's really all right i adopted him about two years ago his his father left him without a cent credit now i have something that i picked up in hollywood i made quite a name for myself out there of course i couldn't repeat it here but i met a lot of problem with people i had a date with lana turner's sister you may know her stomach turner very nice girl i have an egg it's a real egg i wouldn't kid you it's a wooden egg it was laid by a decoy duck a little bag and an egg take the egg place the egg down inside the bag say the magic words sixth and three-fifths and the egg disappears of course to get the egg to come back really snap your fingers like this reach down in the bag and the egg reappears now actually it isn't so hard to do i'm going to show you how to do it you take the egg you place the egg up underneath your arm just act like you're placing the egg in the bag say the magic words sixth and three-fifths you could say two and five-eighths that has nothing to do with it shake the bag out the egg is gone of course to get the aid to come back naturally all the time it's up underneath your arm you see but you snap your fingers like this reach down in the bag and pull out the hay you see now i told you i told you thanks thanks for clapping i expected it now i i told you it was you see use a special prepared bag one that looks something like that [Music] if you don't mind i i hurried over and i'm a little hungry i didn't have much time to get anything to eat so i like to now i have something i think you might like i'm very proud of this it's sterling silver it's uh it's got nickel stamps on the side but don't pay attention to that that's the price very nice little thing you show the tube by merely snapping your fingers like this you can produce these silks now this could go on all all evening and i i know you you other things you'd rather see than me pulling silks out of this tube this could like i say it could go on indefinitely and actually it is hard to see how all these silks come out of a tube this size i mean you can hardly get them back in there in fact it's [Music] um [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] herman yerger owner of an austin texas drug store is no man to take lightly if you do you're quite apt to get the surprise of your life it goes without saying that herman's customers are as plentiful as the pills he dispenses if his pills don't cure you you'll chase the aches away with a bit of ledger domain the customers are never quite sure just what will pop out at yorge's drugstore but if it comes to a vote the eyes have it despite his physical infirmities herman loves life and the friendships life brings him his philosophy is simple laugh and the world laughs with you a good laugh is the medicine in the world drugstore cowboys and their cowgirls don't need any spurs to get the doc juggers they burned up the trail when the word got around that the doc had a new trick and you can't sneeze at this one no siree [Music] when he rides hurt on a gag the results are digestible and well buttered yep get along little doggy [Music] being a holds no terrors for herman yerger he gets around in his rolling steel chair and is the center of admiring throngs when he goes in for a little outdoor advertising his little helper isn't just sure what happens next but as doc yerger says there's more to this business than meets the eye [Music] he's got a corner on his corner drugstore magic his prescription for success is a laugh a day keeps the doctor away [Music] sorry that was a little bit of nightmare fodder um the guy popping pills out of his eye oh my god i'm sorry i wasn't expecting that um let's think about av geeks is you know sometimes you know what you're going to get sometimes you don't uh and that was a series of clips uh that we scanned on behalf of uh craig baldwin's collection he would sometimes clip things together and switch them together onto a real um so leaving us not quite sure what and where things came from but yeah some medicine magic thanks everybody for tuning in uh today hope you had a good time learn some things uh you can always buy us coffee by going to ko-fi.comgeeks or just you know hit a button that says thumbs up or says like or says i'd like to know more about this when you do for future shows by subscribing all those things are useful ways to say hey we like what you do and i like what you do i like when you tune in i like when you comment and i hope that you have a good weekend uh we might get some crazy winter weather which in this part of north carolina just means ice so hopefully the trees and power lines won't come down but yeah it happens um we look inside the film can tell us what to do and it says to please rewind except for those times that it's it says something like this stop don't rewind but um you know in this case please rewind and love each other uh everybody have a good weekend and we'll see you on monday take care eight seven six five four
