so so so so so so so so so so so so so hi everybody i'm skip alzheimer and welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films and talk about them sometimes we eat lunch sometimes we eat something else because we're in a different time zone anyways that last film was from craig baldwin he collects films and is also a found footage found filmmaker um and the what was written on the can was um movies mountains golf so we don't have any other information we don't have any family information we don't know what mountains we got nothing so you know that's one of the things about home movies that kind of get separated from who made them and the family that the person belonged to is that we lose that context we don't quite know what is where and who is what and we can certainly do research we can try to zoom in and look at license plates or calendars or signposts or you know someone who's really good at recognizing mountain ranges or historic golf courses might be able to figure out where where they went um but this is traveling somebody traveled uh this next film is a little short uh part of the nasa's aeronautics space report something they would release to be shown on the news or television here we go enjoy [Music] [Applause] uh calypso calypso this is you two operations uh how do you read over [Music] here good morning this is the calypso research ship of ocean explorer captain jacques cousteau here communicating via satellite from its position off the coast of florida with nasa's research facility in wallace island virginia the calypso served as a floating laboratory in a recent joint effort with nasa what the purpose of of this expedition is to establish a correlation between ground measurements if we can call ground measurement c measurements and measurements from high altitude the goal being that to establish instrumentation for later on for high altitude satellites as well as for higher digital flying airplanes flying at 65 000 feet high altitude u2 aircraft like this one made regular flights over the calypso's position as it sampled the water along the florida coast a prototype instrument called the coastal zone color scanner designed to fly on a future nimbus weather satellite was checked out during the overflights and its data carefully compared to samples taken by the calypso an effort to sense small differences in the content of the ocean this is really a period where experimentally we want to be able to calibrate the insta instruments that will be equipping the satellites of the future by measuring the um productivity through chlorophyll measurements and by measuring the pollution by various methods oil content of the surface etc while altitude high-altitude flying aircraft are doing the same measurements from a distance by photography and comparing the reserves both results we can calibrate the instruments of the high altitude aircraft as you carry about any instrument and later on extrapolate the results to put even more elaborate instruments in satellites we asked captain cousteau what role satellites might play in the future as far as oceanographic research is concerned this is a this is a question that that i'm extremely interested in i believe strongly that oceanographic vessels uh are not uh the proper tool to uh study uh in a modern way the oceans and i can explain this the ocean is extremely vast and uh it's gigantic medium covering two sales of the earth being uh much deeper than the other assist high etcetera etcetera and so on uh the only way out is to instrument the oceans with thousands of instrumented anchored buoys and to interrogate these buoys by satellite and to have a constant in a in a central computer a constant meteorological forecast of the underwater conditions also satellites will be in a position to measure surface pollution and to measure surface productivity so the monitoring of the ocean in the future will be done by high altitude aircraft and by satellites i'm convinced of that and the role of ships will be reduced to a minimum viewing our oceans from on high an important step toward fast and accurate assessments of ocean ecology this has been an aeronautics and space report presented by nasa the national aeronautics and space administration i love those those little short blips uh and every year they would have some and i think quarterly they would make them and they would talk about the different types of things that nasa was working on it wasn't all space program stuff obviously um there was some stuff that was really related to weather um i guess with satellites um but also stuff related to airplanes and other kind of what we call space program dividends where uh technologies used to get us into space were also used for something on the earth so big fan and also jacques cousteau come on 70s hero i mean we think about who are the 70s heroes that we love you know jacques cousteau um you know mr rogers uh other people you know things that i saw when i was a kid i definitely love watching all the the uh national geographic jacques cousteau films of which i have a couple okay so behind me i've got a film set up on telecity and this is one way that we watch films live and transfer them live so here is primary school bus safety enjoy hmm [Music] [Music] do you ever think about what it's going to be like when you're old enough to drive an automobile all those cars and people going in different directions someday when you're driving a car how will you know what to watch out for how will you be able to drive safely well there is a secret to it and it's one that you can learn and begin practicing right now who me you say i don't drive a car i'm too young that's alright you can still learn the secret of safe travel and you can practice it whenever you ride the school bus because many of the rules of school bus safety are the same rules that grown-ups follow when they drive automobiles now here is the secret we'll call it the safety circle the safe automobile driver pretends that his or her car is surrounded by a large invisible circle it's the driver's job to see everything inside the circle and everything that might come into the circle and it's the driver's duty to keep that circle a safe place let's see how you can practice using the safety circle beginning at the time when you leave home in the morning as you walk imagine that there is a great invisible circle around you you're going to see everything that comes into your safety circle and you're the one who is going to keep that circle a safe place for you first off you know that when it's dark or foggy or gloomy a car driver turns the headlights on so other drivers coming into the safety circle can see the car you can do the same by dressing properly on dark mornings or rainy or foggy days wear light-colored clothing even the kind of clothing that glows or shines if you have it now you too can more easily be seen by automobile drivers always leave home in time so you can reach the bus stop about two to five minutes early by not having to run or hurry you can use the safety circle better for example these children have time to see that dog up ahead some dogs will chase runners and may even bite them but persons walking calmly do not excite dogs so much always walk on the sidewalk if there is one the sidewalk was built to be a safe lane for persons walking knowing that drivers generally will look carefully before crossing a sidewalk but you don't take a chance on their seeing you because that car is entering your safety circle you will wait to make sure it has stopped when you know the driver has seen you and is waiting only then do you move across its path remember it's always up to you to keep your safety circle safe do not be like the child who takes shortcuts through yards or around houses he cannot see everything ahead of him and drivers who expect walkers to be on the sidewalk may not be looking for them anyplace else that's how accidents happen in places where there are no sidewalks it's even more important that you make sure you are seen walk on the left side of the road facing traffic that way you can watch for cars entering your safety circle and you make it easier for them to see you where possible walk beside the road and not on it in the city when you have to cross the street be extra careful if possible cross where there are proper crosswalks obey the traffic signs or traffic lights if you need to cross a road or street where there are no traffic signals always remember that you are in charge of your safety circle do not step between parked cars if anyone is in them the driver may be about to move the car where there is one parked car and even if it's empty do not start crossing in front of it because the car will hide you from oncoming traffic instead cross behind the parked car where you can clearly be seen by oncoming cars stop when you get to the outer edge of the car look left right then left again make sure your safety circle is safe for you then cross think of streets and roads as being intended for cars and trucks not for persons walking so walk on them as little as possible that's a good rule walk on roads and streets as little as possible remember that rule when you reach the bus stop and while you're waiting there never bring preschool brothers or sisters or pets to the bus stop with you it would not be safe to leave them there stand well back from the road here you can talk and visit with your friends but this is not the place for running games why because a person being chased may be thinking of getting away and not thinking of where he's going hey why don't you watch where you're going and get yourself hurt and be in a lot of trouble that way come on now stay up on the curb watch for cars by staying back from the road you give your bus driver plenty of room to pull over and stop if you must cross the road to reach your bus look both ways to make sure nothing is coming into your safety circle if the bus is there when you cross look to the driver for a signal when you know it's safe and the driver signals cross quickly in front of the bus if there are several of you line up and board the bus one at a watch time step use the handrail tripping or being bumped while on the steps often causes hard falls and injuries the handrail helps you keep your balance seat yourself quickly so you won't be thrown about when the bus starts moving and stay in your seat all the time the bus is in motion now you move your safety circle inside the bus on buses the aisle must be kept clear with nothing that anyone may trip over oh yeah so hold on to your books bags and anything you brought with you do your part to help keep the bus clean nobody likes a litter bug if you have paper or other trash to get rid of use the waste box by the driver or keep it until you get to a trash container now what about that traffic safety circle you can relax for now the bus driver is responsible for it but you can help the driver keep everybody safe how will imagine what it would be like if you had to steer the bus and watch out for all the traffic around you you would need to watch the road every moment wouldn't it be awful if the riders behind you were shouting and jumping around and you were responsible for their safety what if you suddenly had to step on the brakes thank goodness you don't have to drive yet but you certainly can help the person who does by staying in your seat and by keeping talk and laughter to a normal level yelling and rowdy action make it hard for the driver to concentrate on driving noisy riders make it hard for the driver to hear the siren of an emergency vehicle the driver is supposed to move to the right and stop the bus if the driver doesn't hear the siren there may be an accident at a railroad crossing the driver must stop listen for train whistles look both right and left standing children may block her view of the tracks on one side and noisy riders may keep her from hearing a train's warning whistle even in normal traffic when a driver has to keep looking in the mirror to watch her passengers she can't watch the road and that too is dangerous if you forget the safety rules and the driver has to quiet you down obey her instantly she has stopped the bus because she cannot drive safely under these conditions she is trying to get everyone to school safely you can help by obeying her quickly and politely for your own protection always keep your hands and arms inside the bus you never know when something may pass by too close for safety in a case like this you can see how dangerous it would be to have a head or arm sticking out the window when you arrive at school stay seated until the bus comes to a complete stop your driver or bus patrol leader will signal when you are to unload you'll then leave the bus in a calm orderly way actually the calm safe way of leaving the bus is also the quickest way the worst way would be to have everybody jammed up everyone trying to get off at once which is not only impossible but dangerous the safeway is the best way watch your step use the handrail you'll learn the truth of this when you have emergency drills these drills are always held in a safe place and your driver or a school official will tell you exactly what you were to do you may be asked to practice several ways of leaving the bus in an emergency one way is for everybody to leave through the front door another way is for everybody to leave through the special emergency door at the back of the bus and the third way is for riders in the front half of the bus to leave through the front door while those in the back half of the bus leave through the back door in an emergency you should leave books and other items on the bus the point is to get out quickly and this is best done in an orderly one-at-a-time manner the rear emergency door is high off the ground so be careful during drills usually there will be somebody there to offer a helping hand once on the ground keep walking until you're well away from the bus and the road stay in a group until you are told what to do next on snowy or wet days your good safety habits will protect you those steps may be more slippery than you expect this is just the time when a foot may slip causing a painful fall but these children have learned always to use the handrail to keep their balance the safety rules you learned in going to school are the same ones you use when returning home remain seated keep your voice down and let the driver keep her mind on safe driving when you reach your stop if your house is on the same side of the road as the bus go directly to it or to the sidewalk let your driver see that you're safely out of the way even in dry weather the same safety rules are important if you must cross the road to get home walk about 10 steps ahead of the bus make sure the driver sees that you are going to cross in front of her when you reach the driver's side of the bus stop look both ways to see if anything is coming into your safety circle wait until they pass by or come to a full stop before you cross the road when you know that your safety circle is safe in all directions then cross the road quickly it seems a great deal to remember but it really isn't just remember that it's up to you to keep your safety circles safe that will take care of you while you're on foot because if you remember your safety circle you'll stay on the sidewalk or walk where you can easily be seen you will obey any traffic signals and you will always look both ways before crossing a street in the mornings you'll be on time and will stay well back from the road while waiting for the bus then you'll board or leave the bus one at a time using the handrail and while on the bus you'll stay seated keep things out of the aisle and behave yourself because you will understand that the driver has to concentrate upon keeping her safety circle safe someday when you grow up you are going to be driving and many of the safety rules you'll follow then will be the same ones you're learning and practicing today meanwhile enjoy the kind of bus ride your driver your school and your parents want you to have a safe one [Music] i love it absolutely love it the um school bus i rode the school bus most of my uh elementary and high school life um and uh so this resonates with me um so uh there's an interesting parallel with this and with another film that was made by gene starbecker who uh made that world of work film last time uh he did two um not grisly but definitely more scary uh bus safety films he did and then it happened in death zones and what's interesting is so he defines death zones as those zones around the bus that the bus driver can't see you and that you will get killed and then he proceeds to show how that happens uh and supposedly at different age groups but it's all pretty horrifying and it doesn't actually show the kids getting crushed or anything or any of the results of it but it does editing of it makes it really pretty intense um and then it happened is about misbehaving on the bus and how that results in bus drivers wrecking um and it's it's pretty pretty great um so in this film instead of defining death zones it decide it it defines your circle of safety so it's about you being safe versus these places that you could end up that are will kill you um so i think that's kind of interesting uh but yeah i love me some bus safety films uh and i did do um screenings on an actual school bus that was driving around the streets of austin texas uh back in the day so um pretty great all right what do we got lined up here we got so much stuff to watch so many things uh let's watch the american uh cyan cyanamide cyanimide film this is probably about either pesticides or fertilizer enjoy any tobacco farmer will look with proper in these rows of healthy vigorous plants lies the promise of a full crop of high quality and even gray when harvest arrives this crop will pay dividends here is the reward of faithful intelligent first important step in tobacco farming the healthy seedling from the properly managed tobacco plant bed this is such a bed like thousands of others throughout tobacco land it has produced a splendid stand of sturdy plants because the weed seeds in the bed were killed before the bed was planted this was accomplished by the special use of the well-known nitrogen fertilizer aerocyanimid in these beds plants did not have to compete with weeds for moisture and nourishment nor were they ever subjected to the rough and damaging treatment of hand weeding now just right for pulling they show the results of this special care in their excellent color and sturdy root systems vigorous plants will withstand the shock of transplanting and make rapid growth in the field such fine plants were made possible by modern cyanomid method of weed control which was first introduced in 1936 the handling that plants must undergo when they are set out in the field makes the need for sound stock quite obvious while extreme care is taken to avoid damage still the physiological shock of uprooting and resetting plants cannot be avoided at this critical time therefore plants from a modern cyanomid-treated bed have by far the better chance for survival but even so plants must always be handled with care and set in the ground with the least delay here a county agent demonstrates a hand transplanter this device helps to eliminate much of the back-breaking job of hand planting and speeds up the work of setting out the plant where acreages are big enough mules or track means and with practiced hand set them into the holes prepared by the machine as it goes along while efficiency is the keynote here the same care is given each plant as is required in any other method of operation need for healthy plants remains the producted beds will drop in uniformity fine color and mixture of this tobacco is evidence of a properly balanced fertilizer supplying essential soil nutrients and of good insect control that keeps leaf surfaces undamaged as the plants approach maturity they are topped and the suckers are removed by interrupting natural growth processes in this way all the nourishment is reserved for those leaves that make the best tobacco at priming we see the final results of the care which is given these plants tobacco leaves ripening from the bottom of the plant up are carefully picked a few at a time as they reach the proper stage of maturity because injured leaves do not make good grade particular care must be exercised in handling the leaves at all stages of harvest even when loading the cart leaves must be treated carefully so that there will be no bruising or tearing when the cart comes in from the field with its load for the curing barns waiting hands stand ready to string the tobacco on sticks it takes several people to keep one good stringer busy such sleight of hand comes only with long practice and exp yet fast as the work proceeds careful and expert manipulation for stalls any chance of damage to the tender leaves with a few good stringers several people are kept busy filling the curing barn with hundreds of these neatly strung sticks of tobacco in the barn this bright to be slowly and carefully flu cured a different system of harvesting is practiced in the burley producing sections and in pennsylvania and maryland where tobacco is air cured in these areas instead of picking leaves as they ripen the entire plant is cut down and the harvest completed at one time as the plants are cut they drop on the field in long orderly rows they are then picked up on the spot and pierced on sticks for hanging in the curing barn all of this tobacco seen here was also started from healthy transplants grown in cyanomid-treated plant beds the sticks are now taken up in the field and loaded on trucks with a convenient and practical rack body and hauled to the air curing barns here like other types of tobacco they will receive the same careful attention during processing for market after curing tobacco is taken from the barn to be finally prepared for market bright tobacco like this is sorted for size and graded for quality and then tied in bunches called hands auction time is tobacco land's busiest and most colorful time of year this is the market and the farmer's reward for the careful attention he gives his tobacco from plant bed to harvest while many factors determine grade and the price tobacco brings all good leaf has its origin in good tobacco plant beds and good plant beds are the result of good year-round management good management starts immediately after transplanting with the sowing of a cover crop sorghum cow peas sudan grass or soy beans like this help to control weeds and supply humus building organic matter to the soil this green cover crop should be plowed under or thoroughly disked in about a month in advance of the time for treating with cyanomin instead of a cover crop deep mulch that is free of weed seeds can also be used to conserve moisture and improve soil condition but the addition moisture holding capacity of the soil maintain the desired physical condition and also improve the action of cyanomite in weed control 30 days after the cover crop has been plowed under the ground will be ready to be worked again in preparation for the cyanomid treatment at this time the plant bed is worked over with disc and harrow to break it up and pulverize it cyanide kills on contact only and it cannot reach weed seeds that are sealed up in clods and lumps only carefully prepared finely pulverized soil will give cyanimid a chance to deliver its full measure of effectiveness to reach the weed seed and kill it a number of different farm implements may be used for this work elaborate machinery is in no way a necessity but a thorough pulverizing of the soil is absolutely essential soil that is finally broken up free of lumps and clods is the first consideration and the first promise of a weed-free tobacco plant bed it is now ready for the cyanomid treatment granular cyanomid is an easy to spread free flowing material the correct quantity to use is given in the leaflet with each bag a booklet available at your dealers gives specific recommendations for various tobacco growing regions after determining the total amount to use this quantity is divided in half making two equal portions the first half of the cyanomite is now broadcast on the loose well-worked seed bed even distribution is important because weed seeds lurk everywhere make sure of complete and uniform coverage leave no bare spots excellent distribution can be achieved on larger plant beds with lime and fertilizer spreaders an inexpensive cyanomid broadcaster attached to a tractor or other equipment makes distribution that is even complete and satisfactory in every way now the application must be mixed thoroughly with the top three inches of soil use light equipment only and do not work below three inches continue with a harrow until all clods are broken up because even small clods will not absorb enough material to kill weed seed this application should be worked over repeatedly especially in heavy clay soils which do not break up easily thorough mixing and pulverizing yield improved results now the plant bed should be raked to a smooth surface with a crowned contour to ensure good drainage clods and refuse should be broken up or removed when this is completed the smooth plant bed is ready for application of the second half of the total amount of cyanomin this should be broadcast evenly on the surface this second and last application should now be raked in lightly with a hand rake to mix it with not more than the top one inch of surface soil in this finished soil surface the tobacco seeds will later be planted rolling may be useful under certain soil conditions to smooth and firm the seed bed now with the cyanomid weed killing treatment completed the ground is left in this condition for a period of 90 days before seeding time it is very desirable to place a tight border of logs or boards around these beds at the time of treatment these borders keep weed seeds from washing into the beds and they are useful later on for attaching covers to keep out insects after the tobacco seed has been sown ditching well around the bed is good practice too as it prevents erosion and helps further to keep weed seeds from washing into the bed another good practice is mulching mulching conserves moisture and prevents crusting or packing especially in heavy soil it checks deep freezing and ensures excellent soil conditions for seeding and early plant growth a six to eight inch covering of mulch that is free of weed or grain seed should be used clean straw corn stalks leaves and pine straw or needles all are satisfactory never use an airtight mulch such as paper as an added precaution an application of cyanomid along the borders is a worthwhile procedure the same dosage that was applied to the bed itself will help to ensure a weed-free area close to the plant bed the small amount of material required is cheap insurance whether or not beds are mulched they should be heavily watered at this time even if the soil is moist 10 to 12 barrels per hundred square yards is considered a heavy watering because watering is so important not only at this time but in all stages of plant bed operation it is desirable to locate the bed near a convenient supply of clean water here a farmer has the good fortune to have a nearby pond of clean water from which he can draw with a tractor-powered pump as he needs it with such a plentiful supply on hand he can conveniently and quickly do a thorough job of watering at any time the plant bed requires it here now is the bed 90 days before seating time completely prepared for winter with every prospect of being in perfect condition when winter is over and spring arrives then when seeding time comes around again the mulch is raked off if the ground is wet the mulch should be removed a day or two before seeding in order to allow the soil to dry for working the first step at seeding time is to broadcast a plant bed fertilizer recommended by your county agent or tobacco specialist because the cyanomid that was used to kill weed seeds supplies a large amount of nitrogen a low nitrogen plant bed fertilizer is recommended do not apply more than the recommended amounts using too much fertilizer has often damaged young seedlings the fertilizer should be mixed in with a garden rake which at the same time prepares a shallow seed bed be careful here as the whole effectiveness of the treatment can be destroyed if the soil is worked deeper than one inch deep cultivation brings untreated weed seeds to the surface therefore no heavier implement than a garden rake is ever used at this time now for the actual seating the tobacco seed is carefully measured out and because it is so small in size it is most easily sewn when mixed with some material such as sterile soil cottonseed meal or fertilizer thorough mixing is important to assure uniform distribution of the seed the seed is sown carefully in order to get an even stand of plants for this operation an experienced hand is needed careful seating will help to ensure an even and uniform stand of plants in the bed tramping now brings the seed in contact with the soil and establishes a firm seed bed instead of tramping light steel or wood rollers are often used for this purpose when the bed is firmed it's ready for covering first a necessary protection guard young plants from late freezes and beating rains and keep out insects and weed seeds these where no log or plank borders were used are being pegged down over a very thin mulch of pine straw though the steps are many in the modern propagation of tobacco plants the cyanomid way each operation step by step bears the recommendation of accumulated experience supplemented by the newest discoveries in agricultural science in proof of the effectiveness of this method let us uncover the result achieved here it is the bed of seedlings grown the modern way a fine stand of healthy plants because of cyanide these sturdy tobacco seedlings did not have to compete for their existence against a host of fast-growing vigorous weeds in this untreated bed for comparison the small tobacco plants did not have a chance a forest of uncontrolled weeds choked them out here treated and untreated portions of a bed proved the value of chemical weed control the one produces a weakling the other a healthy seedling with a sturdy root system of a perfect transplant a healthy stand of plants like this kept weed free by the modern inexpensive cyanomid method is now within reach of every tobacco farmer such beds need only ordinary care and watering until the time comes to pull the plants these will be in prime condition for transplanting and sure to make good growth in the field today satisfied farmers in all tobacco growing areas realize that the cyanomidway is the modern inexpensive way to weed-free plant beds the sure basis of a profitable successful tobacco harvest [Music] okay there you go everything you ever wanted to know about um uh cyanamide good times uh let's see so i have another film set up on the telecini uh and this one it was made in always play with joshua during recess i know audrey but today there were some girls there and they started chasing us yeah well they chased us see and one of them took my books and the one who took my books is the one that i like her name is katie and she took my books and so i had to chase her and i taste her and i chased her and i finally caught up with her and when i did i kissed her on the cheek i think that's terrible i do what i mean i think that's terrible i don't think you should do things like that what did i do i don't think you should go around kissing people when they don't like to be kissed and they don't want to be kissed i don't think you should do that but audrey i don't think that's nice but audrey i think she likes being kissed how do you know you don't know yes i do because she kind of giggled she didn't seem mad audrey i think she kind of liked it well i don't think you should do that kind of stuff audrey what's the matter with you you're really upset i know i'm upset well you shouldn't be upset about me audrey i didn't do anything wrong well [Music] i guess i'm not upset about you catalin but you are upset audrey aren't you what's the matter well what catalan was talking about reminded me of something kind of bad what did it remind them well remind him the other sexual of the youth sexual abuse i don't even know what that is what is that well sexual abuse is when somebody when somebody like touches you all over your body and does things all to you all over your body and you don't even want them to do it and you don't like it why where did you hear about sexual abuse well i heard about it because it happened to somebody that i know it happened to someone that you know [Music] yeah it happened to my friend elizabeth well what happened to elizabeth well you see susan elizabeth has this uncle so what i have an uncle i love my uncle so what everybody has an uncle yeah but this uncle well see she really loved her uncle too catalan but then last year when she was alone with him he started doing things to her what kind of thing well he started you know like i said he started touching her all over her body and he made her take down her pants and then he touched her there too she felt awful about it lord but she did i know i mean at first she she was well first she was all mixed up susan because you see at first i guess she thought it felt kind of nice but then she started feeling terrible well what did she do about it well at first she couldn't do anything how come i mean i mean why didn't she tell somebody or was why didn't she yo why didn't she tell somebody well she didn't well because her uncle told her not to he did yeah her uncle said don't tell anybody about this this is a secret he said this is a secret between you and me and don't tell anybody and so she didn't because she was kind of scared that her uncle had been mad yeah but why did she let him do it if she didn't want him to well because i guess because at first she thought that she was just supposed to do things that her uncle said because he was a grown up and because kids are supposed to do things their grownups tell them to do boy there's no wonder she was confused yeah she was all mixed up well audrey then what happened well finally [Music] finally she she told her parents she told her parents what did her parents do well her parents well their parents were really really really upset about it well i don't blame them i would be upset about it too if something like that happened to either of you well they were upset about it well were they angry it hurt no why would they be angry at her it wasn't her fault no they were angry at her uncle and they were upset and they were sad for her they felt sad that something like that had happened to her and they told her that they would never ever ever let anybody do that to her again and they said that they were really they were really glad that she finally told them so they could stop her uncle from doing that to her did she feel better after she told her parents of course she did catalan yeah but gee i think she was kind of lucky lucky she doesn't sound lucky to me well not lucky about her uncle but lucky that she could talk to her parents about that i mean some kids i know couldn't tell their parents anything like that well how come because their parents their parents would just you know get angry at him or something or sometimes uh kids are embarrassed to talk to their parents about anything like that boy i don't know what she would have done if she couldn't told her parents well catalan even i mean if elizabeth couldn't have told her parents i i think there were probably other grown-ups that she could have told well like who well i think everybody has someone in their in their life that they can trust some grown-up that they can trust you mean like her teacher at school yeah she could have yeah she could tell her teacher or um well the school nurse or a friend's parent maybe that's right some grown-up and then that grown-up could help her oh boy boy audrey that makes me feel all yucky inside when you tell me about that i know it makes me feel yucky too and it made elizabeth feel awful the catalan that's why i got upset because it kind of reminded me of that yeah but audrey that's real different from what i did isn't it steven yes catalan that's really different from what you did yeah it is because it really isn't any secret those girls told everybody they even told their teacher i was embarrassed well i guess it's different in other ways too caroline i know it is ordered yeah first of all katie's even bigger than you are you're the same age you couldn't have made her do anything i know i couldn't and besides it didn't feel bad katie and i are really good friends you know in fact i'm gonna go over to her house this afternoon we're going to play soccer listen little kids on the lock hey order you want to come yeah i like to play soccer but i'll only come if i can be goalie well you'll have to talk to the other kids about that i like kitty golly well maybe you can i'll go see okay [Applause] [Music] i can check that gear in a minute so don't touch anything okay [Music] hey get down from there now what if it bumped that control by accident you'd be mincemeat by now what have i told you you don't work on equipment when the engine's running well i told them not to touch anything all right i guess i wasn't thinking you weren't thinking you mean you'll work on engines and machinery and not think of your own personal safety here shake hands with danger shake hands with danger meet a man you ought to know i used to laugh at safety now they call me three finger joe [Music] i was young and feisty never did things by the book just let me get my tool box and i'll take myself look i climbed up on a dozier [Music] i used to laugh at safety now they call me three finger joe although i learned a lesson i forgot it soon enough the knicks and burns and scratches showed the young ones i was tough till another morning i was grinding on some steel my other hand got careless and fed my skin into the wheel hands with danger step right up and say hello grinding wheels and metal are what made me three [Music] fingers i've seen mechanics burning and i've seen them take a fall just to save themselves a minute i've seen them lose it all i've watched them caught in trouble seen them take a chance and lose they get careless for a moment and spend a lifetime with the blues [Music] [Applause] [Music] um [Music] she can't believe [Music] [Music] [Music] oh move around inside [Music] yeah shake hands with danger and some friends i used to know compared to them i'm lucky to be just three finger joe [Laughter] that's our after dinner mint to clear the palette uh from um uh the film that we just watched which is some secret should be told um it's a cringy film it's cringy because of the subject matter but it's also cringy because it's a ventriloquist um puppeteer um and it's the 80s so it's the thing that's interesting is like um you know there's certain things that work with little kids that just do not work with adults and i think this is an example of like oh so did this the did the the approach for talking about the subject matter was it better or made it just worse sometimes i i look at films like that for example too thick of a clown which is about trying to show kids that dentists are okay by showing a scary clown did you make things better or did you make things worse uh in this case i think that uh puppets are oftentimes excellent ways to tell things to kids and especially hard to discuss things but it doesn't work for adults adults are just like oh this is horrible so you know not every film we have is a feel good film sometimes they're boring sometimes they are triggering and i hope that this was not too triggering for anybody sometimes they are super super cringy and uncomfortable and awkward um and so um that's why we watch shake hands with danger uh with some comical violence and a song that we can dance to to clear to clear ourselves for the rest of the day um if you think i
