so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so hi everybody i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films and talk about them um kind of as a continuation of yesterday where we showed astrodome footage today we showed downtown houston footage circa 1966 um and coincidentally the shirt i'm wearing the clown said i am alert i take care of myself every hour every minute of the day you can too if you will clowns never lie is from this magical place uh in houston called the orange show um houston i don't if i on the surface i don't like houston it's hot it's humid it's polluted and smog and there's just too many cars but the people of houston are very mostly very kind the people that i when i've done shows there uh and there's all these because of that humidity and that like smog and there's all these crazy art things that kind of popped up there so there's the art car parade that showed up um the orange show is i guess uh someone uh who was a mailman or he also delivered oranges back when he was younger he would like go to florida and then bring them back and sell them he decided that orange was the perfect fruit and perfect food and so he developed a a lot across the street from where he lived and made it into this theme park that was related to the orange and it was made up of all these wonderful things that he found and he bought and it has all this mosaic work and it's it's this amazing outsider artwork um similar to the watts towers and it's in the middle of a neighborhood and he was hoping that it this would be eventually as popular as disneyland um but this is one of the things from it and i did a show there because i love this shirt so much um and this is part of a display that has this weird clown kind of mosaic collage art thing that's and it has this in letters um anyways i did a show there about oranges clowns and line and uh so um houston yeah it's it's fascinating um all right uh so filing you decide of all hand tools used in machine shop work perhaps none is more important than the hand file anyone doing filing must learn the many kinds and sizes of files since the correct file must be selected for each job the worker is removing a sharp and dangerous edge he is applying just enough pressure on the forward stroke only to make the file cut the fingers are held away from the sharp edges the efficient worker always uses an easy long stroke the single cut file teeth are cut at an angle to the edges of the file and contact the work at approximately 90 degrees in order to get a smooth finish due to the fact that a file is cut the same on both sides the teeth run in the opposite direction when observed from the top side or operator's viewpoint the workman has been using a single cut bastard cut file the word cut as used here refers to the spacing between the teeth the coarseness or fineness of these spacings determines the coarseness or fineness of cut on all files under extreme magnification the teeth on single cut files resembled the teeth of a hacksaw let us compare a medium cut file with the bastard cut they are both single cut the difference lies in the spacing of the teeth all series of cuts can be roughly classified as coarse medium and fine however the bastard cut is between the medium and fine cuts in all series of files here is a typical filing job a piece of cold rolled steel cut off with a hacksaw to be filed the metal is soft and requires very little filing so a single cut medium cut file will be used before starting to file a flat surface be sure the surface is square the skilled workman knows the importance of the right file for the right job a single cut medium cut file is selected this file properly used will leave a smooth surface that can be easily finished be sure the file is straight filing a true flat surface requires a straight file all files remove metals in the form of small chips a magnified slow-motion view shows the formation of these chips some chips cling to the file and may be removed by tapping the file on wood every few strokes for an illustration let us examine a file that has been improperly used if the chips are not cleaned from the file they will pack between the teeth forming pins these pins scratch the surface of the work with this result tapping the file on wood does not always knock out the chips therefore a file card should be used frequently if the pins cannot be removed by carting a piece of soft metal may be used the expert workman uses only enough pressure on the pile to make it cut very fine thin oil kerosene or chalk on the file will help keep the chips from sticking when filing soft metals breaking the corners and cleaning the work is necessary for the next step in the filing operation to produce a smoother surface the worker selects a finer single cut second cut file using a file in this manner is called draw filing after the surface has been made smooth it can be polished by using a very fine single cut file profiling is used for all finishing and polishing here is a comparison of the single cut second cut file used in the first draw filing with that of the finer single cut file used in the final polishing the workman runs his hand over the file to make sure that it is free of chips chalking the file helps prevent pinning and gives a finer polish lastly the work is checked for accuracy such smooth and accurate surfaces are achieved by the workman after much practice and development of his skill plus his knowledge of files and the ability to select the right file for the right job we have been studying the single cut file in several degrees of coarseness and fineness now let's examine the double cut file required by this job let us compare them under extreme magnification the double cut file is contrasted with the single cut file has two cuts forming a diamond pattern of pointed teeth the single cut has parallel rows of teeth a double cut file is always selected to remove excess metal with a free easy pull stroke just enough pressure is used to make the file cut too much pressure may damage the work as well as ruin a file by breaking off the tips of the teeth a file can be ruined on the first stroke by too much pressure in this case the worker is filing a flat on the tough cast iron ring and has selected a double cut file since excess metal is to be removed and there is no need for a smooth finish also when filing soft metals such as aluminum a double cut file is selected to remove excess material however there are special files for this type of work such as the shear cut file the teeth on the shear cut file run at a sharp angle to the edge of the file here the worker is filing excess metal from brass another soft metal he has selected a coarse cut double cut file let us compare the double cut medium cut file and the bastard cut the bastard cut is perhaps the most universal of all cuts the course cut double cut leaves this surface a finer finish is given with a single cut file polishing is done by draw filing with a single cut file hand files are made in all shapes and sizes in all degrees of fineness and coarseness and for all different kinds of metal there is a file for every job wherever there are metal parts to be filed by hand to remove excess metal to provide smooth surfaces or to shape those parts just remember select the right file for the right job use fine cut files for hard metals use coarse cut files on soft metals use double cut files or special files to remove excess metals use single cut files for a smooth surface use only single cut files for draw filing keep the file clean use just the right pressure on the forward movement only and a long easy stroke to do the jobs that not take a step without me a pity he was so heavy my back hurt but i did not complain at least not out loud i did not because i so greatly appreciated the friendship of the mighty sultan and there was another bond that held me bound to the sultan's palace the most powerful bond the princess the sultan's daughter she did not know that i loved her that was my secret [Music] so [Music] so [Music] do [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] when they sounded the alarm i was far out at sea far from the sleepy princess far from the fat sultan i turned my back on them and told myself i'm not having anyone ride on my back again ever i rode all night long to get as far from the sultan as i could i knew he would never forgive my flight and that he would have me followed in the morning when the sun came out i saw a little island quite near at hand [Music] in the middle there towered an odd sort of rock like a gigantic egg can there be a bird that lays eggs as large as that but it isn't a rock either goodness what on earth can it be [Music] [Music] what am i to do now where can i flee this is the end [Music] [Applause] [Music] it was a gigantic terrible bird i scarcely dared breathe and i hid under its wings like a wounded mouse [Music] and when i saw its appetite i crawled into the darkest corner under its great feathered wing when night fell i remained buried in its feathers but i was so frightened i never slept a wink i only fell asleep towards morning and only for a moment [Music] what a dreadful awakening my head started swimming when i saw how high we were [Music] [Music] we flew all day i had to take special care for fear the monster would notice me the involuntary stowaway that could really be my end [Music] [Music] hey chad with my own eyes i saw how that terrible monster caught an elephant good riddance but what will happen to me now i was left all alone and i did not feel too confident what was i to do without any people that strange forest terrified me [Music] [Applause] uh [Applause] me [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] ah [Music] i understood the poor old man couldn't walk and wanted me to carry him i was sure he would take me to some good people and so i took pity on him [Applause] but woe betide me the old man settled down on my shoulders and kept kicking me like a mule he dug into me with his heels as if i were a horse and i could not get rid of him for the life of me [Music] is my back only for burdens not my own am i a horse or an ass i must get rid of the old man at any cost [Music] [Music] the cruel old man proved an indigestible mouthful even for the hippopotamus [Music] i plodded and toiled along with that old man on my back all day long without food or drink to revive me i would have given half a lifetime for a drink and suddenly the coincidence a little barrel was in my path some shipwrecked sailors must have left it there at last a drink i was dying of thirst but i never even wet my lips the old man was thirsty too he drank and he drank and he drank and not a drop did he leave poor me the barrel had been full of wine and that was lucky for me every cloud has a silver lining the old man was tipsy he forgot to hold on tight and fell off with a thud he forgot all about me and carried on like a juggler at the fair the wine had got the upper hand of him [Music] and i felt just fine as if i had thrown a mountain off my back from then on my lucky star remained with me the shipwrecked sailors welcomed me amongst them and together we soon set out again to see in search of new adventure [Music] a little wacky um peter thomas man no no 19 um among other things um blood blood spatter but um anyways to have him read a fantasy story like that is it's funny his you know you know his voice but you don't know his voice talking about fantasy stuff so it's it's kind of hilarious all right um this next film that we have set up is uh um i thought i had seen this and i thought this was part of the is a career in for you and i think it is but it has a different um beginning which means a different song and so i think that this is a strong candidate for the toe tapping tournament which we will probably start doing in uh march uh where we will pick our favorite uh jingles and songs from these films and then we will go head-to-head with the found footage festival who will be doing the same thing in parallel and um behind me is this the the spoils of victory from last year would shake hands with danger which obviously was going to trounce everything uh and the painting of the club of the hand holding the club that was something that had commissioned as uh something that i might want to play for uh they wanted to play for uh the uh clown thanksgiving painting which i had gotten from someone from a thrift store um and they were obsessed with that painting so anyways this might be a strong contender let me know what you think uh and then we'll start we'll start thinking about uh this in march so anyways here's uh the world of work enjoy [Music] there's something [Music] of choice [Music] the year you leave school three million others your age will enter the world of work many directly others after they've completed specialized education and training getting one of the better jobs becomes tougher with each passing year if you haven't started thinking about what you want to do if you haven't begun learning about the different careers it's time you did [Music] thank you in the beginning man had to work just to stay alive to get food clothing and shelter as time passed and man's knowledge increased his means of acquiring these necessities became more sophisticated today people work for many reasons many beyond mere survival work satisfies other human needs the specific need varying with the individual most try to match work with their personal interests abilities temperament life goals if properly matched the work can be satisfying and fill the need to accomplish something purposeful and useful some of you will want an occupation that will let you work alone or in a group with people with data or with things depending upon your preference some of you will want an occupation that permits you to protect the environment to improve living standards or promote world peace only you know where your interests are and what will be important to you with your parents teachers or school counselors help draw up a list of your special needs that work must satisfy finding out what is just right for you may not be easy with more than 20 000 occupations to consider many of you have seen these occupations divided into groups called clusters whether you're familiar with 15 clusters 12 clusters or none at all you'll have no trouble with the groupings in this film the film will divide the world of work into 10 major groups and will show you selected occupations in each category one of which may be your passport to independence money the recognition you want [Music] check them all out any one of these 10 categories could contain one or more career opportunities that is appropriate for you [Music] professional and related careers appeal to young people who want to go on to higher education [Music] occupations in this area offer interesting and responsible work and often good salaries as well engineers physicians scientists and teachers fall into the group of professions which require specialized knowledge and skills sometimes years of education and advanced degrees some professions such as the performing arts employ actors actresses singers dancers and musicians and require special talents and often years of training professional sports on the other hand place a higher requirement on skill than academic preparation newspaper reporters accountants advertising workers and the clergy are also professional occupations many supportive careers in education library work recreation social welfare require some specialized training the success or failure of every company no matter how large or small the growth of every industry organization the efficient operation of every government agency local state or federal depends heavily on the way managers do their jobs six million salaried workers and two million owners guide the destiny of the nation's businesses at every level decisions must be made people must be supervised top level managers make the major decisions and have the final responsibility for an organization's success more and more women hold managerial jobs their prospects are best in retail trades but the outlook is more promising in many other fields this is true in the armed services as well with the joint chiefs of staff setting the policy and course for those below them in the chain of command technicians are involved with the techniques of detail work working with engineers scientists physicians and other professional personnel the technicians responsibilities may often overlap with those of the professional most technicians require specialized education or training in some phase of technology or science such training may be obtained in technical institutes junior colleges or on-the-job training draftsman engineering aides x-ray laboratory and electronics technicians are some examples of technical jobs sales work can open up a whole new world for young people career opportunities abound both for those who like to travel and those who do not five million people work in sales occupations some salespeople sell directly to the public many others to wholesalers who in turn sell to a retailer who then sells the products to the consumer poise the ability to communicate and the desire to serve the customer are essential for a successful sales career some work in sales as manufacturers representatives selling the wares their company makes some sell real estate homes buildings industrial facilities and hotels most sell tangible goods others such things as stocks bonds and mutual funds some sell insurance opportunities look good in most sales jobs in the future a high school diploma is an asset to a beginner seeking a sales career in some cases employers will offer on-the-job training the outlook is good in the clerical occupations too at present more than 13 million people are employed in clerical jobs the majority work in business industry and government clerical workers keep records handle great volumes of paperwork associated with office work and business operations some jobs have specific duties such as handling communications placing and taking the phone calls greeting visitors in smaller companies clerical workers may be asked to do a variety of things while many take dictation transcribe reports and perform strictly secretarial chores others invoice customers handle money maintain inventories file records reports and mail and see that products are shipped many more take the responsibility of keeping the books the vital accounting records of their company computers and office machines are used in a large number of jobs while courses in business subjects are helpful a high school education is the minimum requirement for clerical workers almost all beginning clerical workers receive on-the-job training the service occupations also offer a lot of opportunities to beginning workers jobs in this category provide services of every description to the american people everything from child care to policing streets from putting out fires to cleaning homes and buildings service occupations include those connected with the preparation of food and the serving of it sailors soldiers and airmen are included in the service occupations as are those who provide health care grooming and personal services others who work in the service occupations are related to the entertainment industry or leisure activities presently 10 million people work in the service occupations as income levels rise and more leisure time becomes available even more people will be needed to provide services that add to our personal comfort pleasure and enjoyment [Music] or how about this for those of you who might like working outdoors if you'd like to have a special kind of relationship with living things and to the environment you live in consider doing what 4 million others do for a living while the number of employed farm workers is decreasing there are still numerous farm-related occupations to choose from in addition to those concerned with growing and harvesting crops and farm commodities many work in some aspect of agro-business others as county agents agronomists and dairy production technicians livestock and poultry production specialists if you like to fish or raise them there's a variety of marine fisheries occupations to consider the work is often rigorous and on the water if your interests lean more toward protecting forests and wildlife and preserving nature's wonders the forestry occupations offer many opportunities as wildlife technicians range managers and soil conservationists most jobs in this category require specialized knowledge and training [Music] or how about exploring this group of occupations several million people work in a wide range of processing jobs such as refining everything from petroleum to sugar treating or working thousands of materials or products take your pick a knowledge of the specific processes used in a particular industry is essential bats stills ovens furnaces mixing machines grinders and related equipment or machines are usually involved in the processing occupations jobs range from tobacco cures to coffee tasters from electroplators to food processing technicians shade matchers to coil makers experience in the processing field is most frequently acquired through on-the-job training the machine trades make up another group of occupations employing millions of workers in a wide spectrum of jobs involving forming shaping cutting and drilling all kinds of metals to make the models tools dyes in order to produce the equipment necessary to keep modern industry running effectively and then there are mechanics in repairmen who keep the wheels and gears turning in industry in the home on the ground and in the air every industry from the bakery to the drug industry employ machinists every product manufactured which undergoes a number of assembly operations is put together by people in bench work occupations these workers put together small parts to make sub-assemblies or small complete units at more complex levels workers require workers to start as apprentices millions more have occupations in an assortment of fields not covered in other categories such as transportation bus drivers train them pilots travel agents ticket agents porters sky caps depot clerks and dispatchers thousands more are involved in packaging and warehousing every conceivable product manufactured or sold many more work for utilities gas electric telephone thousands more are employed in some aspect of the amusement business many more in recreational activities or in some aspect of the motion picture radio and television industry mining the logging industries and graphic arts employ many more [Music] yes the world of work is big complex and for those in jobs they like exciting if it's vastness boggles your mind you're not alone some people know what they want to do and their choice appears to fit them well but many young people are uncertain and will need to explore several areas before they choose if that's the case with you here's a tip on how to go about it study careers as you would any important school subject world of work may turn out to be the most important subject of all your future income way of life and friends are often determined by the planning you do now regardless of the career areas you explore learn all you can about the nature of the work the lifestyles of the workers where the jobs are the rewards the employment outlook and the chances for advancement opportunities exist right now within your own high school to explore many of these occupations talk with your school counselors with your teachers your parents people employed in the type of work that interest you keep in mind there are many films and film strips covering the world of work make a point to see as many as you can look into the careers that especially interest you in greater detail the school library is a good source don't overlook magazines and newspapers they contain information on what's happening every day the help wanted ads are a good barometer of jobs in demand and salaries being paid your local state employment office listed in your phone book under state listings is a good source of information government agencies offer assistance many actively recruit for new employees keep in mind that the military services offer education and training in a number of specialized jobs training that you can put to use later on in civilian life and they'll pay you while you study find out more about jobs that interest you by actually working at them part-time weigh the pros and cons of each career area in the world of work as it applies to you then consider the career that appears to best fit your needs after that work out a program with your school counselor to be sure you're getting the education and training you'll need to qualify for entry into the career area of your choice always keep in mind if you really want to you can specialize in some areas examine your own talents develop them to the highest degree possible set goals they can and will change but for the time being you'll be moving forward make your goals realistic determine the place in life where you eventually would like to be and take steps to find out whether you have what it takes watch bulletin boards some firms send representatives to schools to look for future employees civil service offices can also supply you with job information your local post office lists agencies on their bulletin board along with notices of examinations remember the occupation you choose is your passport to do the things you really want to do in the years ahead there's something out there in the world that's right from you [Music] there's something out there [Music] think of a choice [Music] that was awesome um and again it is counselor films counselor films they of course did the is a career in blah for you of which they are kind of referencing with this film um but also they did the fun or dumb uh songs and um in films and i i guess counselor films had to have a song a theme song so i'm gonna start doing some research to see if i have any more counselor films that have theme songs different theme songs because all of them
