you can't see me all right uh thanks everybody for coming out to the geeks leftovers what the a/v geeks saw hope everybody had a good Thanksgiving holiday hassle-free so tonight is going to be a special thing but really not that special in that I always try to show a couple of films every time I do this every month that I've never seen before but sometimes it's easy to fall into these kind of traps for money well I know that these films are good so I'll just show these or I know that these films are bad I'll just show these so tonight we're pulling films that I have never seen before absolutely have not seen there's no information in the database about them and so we'll just kind of see what we can find and what we will discover together now there's a precedent for this which is that traditionally every Sunday I would have people over and we would watch new films that I got or old films that I got that I've never seen before and then I would build shows based on that so I might read I might do this more often just because we're averaging getting a new film every day and I'm not watching that many so I need to kind of keep up with with what we've got so thanks everybody for the comments and you know keep them coming I apologize to anybody who's watching this on YouTube that's getting a weird thumping sound when you watch the films I'm not really sure exactly why that is somebody reported this in a previous episode and so I'm just trying to keep technology roll in here this is where if you've never seen this before we're actually watching the film's live so I'm gonna start rewinding here these this is a what's called a Telus innie when I start rewinding you can see it's actually corresponding if I flip back you'll see you know we're actually watching things in Reverse and I'm trying not to have the audio where you can Mickey Mouse you can hear it so yeah so we have a variety of things and then at the end I will have a two films for you to choose from so we'll vote as in the comments about what they are and so I'll let you know about halfway through what they are so yeah I don't know what to say that last film of the purple turtle was really great because it was actually sponsored by the American crayon corporation I think or American crayon Council metrof is a non-profit or if it was a company but you know it's basically an advertisement for crayons you know certainly there's there's value in talking about arts for young people and arts for all people actually as far as creativity but um I think is American crayon company that's funny a lot of times filmmakers would get sponsorship by or from a company they'd say like hey I'm doing this film and it might be in your best interest and if you you know help me pay for it then I'll put you in the credits and so many times they're called sponsored films some of them are really blatant advertisements and some of them are just you know you just get I mentioned there's a filmmaker in Charlotte Walter J Klein who he made an entire industry of that where he made hundreds of films where they were sponsored selling all right this next film again a lot of these I don't know what they are and so if there's anything that's presenting nudity or sex I might have to turn off because occasionally that creeps into my collection so we're gonna try to keep it family-oriented here on YouTube and Facebook because I'm sure that people are watching this with their kids in some cases so I'll try to be delicate yes there's some legitimate educational films that have nudity and sex and they're not just adult entertainment all right so this film is called the battle enjoy and this is a silent film which is why you heard that good sound that's the sound of the sprockets so I'm gonna actually just turn off those rockets you and it just ends ABB's odd so DW Griffith yes I don't know if you noticed during the inner titles there was that we look like in the American Bandstand logo that's American Biograph and that was their version of watermarking to make sure that people unscrupulous film people did not pirate and/or bootleg their films you'll actually see that logo sometimes show up in scenes with actors look you'll see it like the wallpaper or you'll see like in a photo like on a mantelpiece or something and so it's really was a way to kind of watermark and try to keep people from getting the copy making dupes of it and then repackaging it as their own you know supposedly American buyer craft would go and look and see like oh well this is ours this is our film because you can see our logo in the background so even back in the early teens there was unscrupulous movie pirating going on I think it's always it's part of our nature another funny thing is so DW Griffith of course did birth of the nation I actually had an opportunity to digitize some of his home movies and I would say more than half of it was cats like footage of cats and kittens in a basket so not only did this guy you know was he a pioneer as far as American narrative cinema he also created the cat video like back in the early 20th century long before YouTube and supposedly there's some cat footage in birth of nature so I said known as I've never seen before this one I just got on eBay last week and this one has sound so that's good my god this is a batch of kind of work wartime ww2 films so that's supposedly what this is now what's interesting is sometimes what I what they described and what I get might be different and then maybe maybe I will make it to where you can see me give negative feedback to somebody or come on you can send them a mean email saying like look this is not what you described that happens very rarely I think a lot of the people on eBay or they sell show called the homefront which is all about war at home and our civil responsibilities when we are at war regarding and rationing and gasoline food buy war bonds there's amazing films that are meant to make us feel very guilty because we're not at war and we need to Serbian interesting think you have to make us feel like we you know this is a part of our duty that we our boys are out there fighting and so we need to keep up our end of the bargain very different than war in the latter part of the 20th century in the beginning of the 21st century just seemed to be a same type of thing as far as our responsibility to our troops except on Veterans Day or with yellow ribbons so Tonight Show is all films that I have not seen this one I just recently got and so we have not seen these and so I'm very excited so far we have seen the purple turtle which is about art young preschool kids and kindergarteners doing art including a battle like an epic battle and then I showed the battle and then I showed another battle so there's that's just an one of the unintentional themes that happens when we randomly pick films to watch now let me see I'm gonna look in the pile here so you can you find something that is also battle related all right all right so some of you that collect film know that film has its most 16 is on acetate and when acetate breaks down it makes acetic acid which is vinegar and this film stinks stinks of vinegar so you'll see it looks like okay so you guys were watching me thread tell us any the big issue that we might run into is that there might have not have a decent tack which means that it will the tension won't keep and then we'll have to do something else this is what happens when you actually show film have all these inspirations all right that's pretty good and we'll see what happens all right playing so well all right it is journey Brasilia City of Hope so this is about the modern city of brasília [Music] this is a story of one of history's great dreams a dream coming true in the green and lonely highlands of Brazil here we're Wildcats once roamed a proud and industrious nation is fashioning its dream into a truly 20th century city the new capital Brasilia sudah di speranza city of hope is how the dream was expressed by Andre Malraux boldness energy and confidence II wrote this may be the crest given to you by posterity the boldness and concept comes from the mind of city planner Lucio Costa de Meyer the Planalto Palace stone the house a bowl complementing the architecture of the planet oh palace is another guardian of Liberty the Supreme Court with a biometric form seemingly lighter-than-air the stop dead head of President Joe Cellino kubacheck relieves it's simple plains and angles tl Costa wrote of his design for Brasilia it arose from the primary gesture of one who marks or takes possession of a place the sign of the Cross itself [Music] in the past have distinguished the great works of architecture a simple compact design in which the beauty is derived from its proportions and from the structure itself castas appraisal of Niemeyer's work written over a decade ago still seems relevant he said it has the kind of individualism that one may term generic and fruitful it represents a leap forward in time because it's a prophetic revelation of what architecture means for the Society of the future [Music] costas city has been planned to house over a half million people along its second access super blocks are being built each a self-contained village with its own schools and shops this design is functional and consistent with the city's entire concept windows a traditional Brazilian detail are frequently shaded and accented with louvers or tile neighbourhoods are spawning in the new capital and children are unhappy accord with their surroundings supermarkets have opened in the residential blocks inside is the efficiency which self-service has brought to another of life's necessities [Music] one of brasilia's first churches our Lady of fátima symbolizes the inherent faith of the Brazilian people its exterior decor of Brazilian tile is a silent him to the dove of peace [Music] Priscilla's first big date with history was the 21st of April 1960 inauguration day for the new capital as though drawn by Destiny's magnet Brazilians from the length and breadth of the land came to their proud new city for this day when Brasilia became the nation's new capital was the fruit of an old dream a dream which began almost two centuries ago now after a frantic paced four years of building president kubacheck could move the government from Rio de Janeiro to Brasilia he had given the dream its form [Music] the heartland of Brazil was open and its people proudly watched brasilia's inaugural parade the people could had they wished remember that it was 1823 when Joseph Bonifacio named the yet unborn city procedure or 1891 when the first republican constitution ordered the transfer to the inland capital or the 20th century when surveys and plans brought the dream closer to reality but this was their day Viva Brasilia Viva Brasilia [Music] on the edge of the city is embassy roll which president dwight d eisenhower visited early in 1960 here he compared Brasilia with the opening of the United States own frontier [Music] embassies of the world will build along the avenue of Nations [Music] Brasilia is a city of energy it was conceived in the energy of man's mind and vision it was built with the energy of petroleum which man's mind to assist the energy of his muscles at first everything needed in the city came by aircraft a tiny airstrip became a busy Airport Rhodes came next Brasilia was deliberately placed far inland to open up the nation's vast interior [Music] while a permanent vasilia is rising a temporary city thrives next door it is the free city a bustling friendly place like all Western towns the base camp of the construction men who are building Brasilia Brazilians are coming to Brasilia to start a new life to make a new home [Music] [Applause] the construction of Brasilia is under the control of a government company called for brevity's sake Novick it is headed by Israel Pinero a man who knows how to multiply the skills of men by the might of machines to build a city in the shortest time [Music] three in the making the work to be done was monumental night and day it went on until the city could be opened and dedicated in a miraculously short time the Cathedral of Brasilia perhaps best characterizes the audacity of Oscar Niemeyer as well as his sense of unity and harmony it's 21 columns rise from a perfect circle in a grand sweep toward the infinite [Music] for years to come Priscilla will grow and the face of the land will change earthmovers handled with the skill of the men who are now part of the dream supply the drive which is shaping the new frontier it is not merely the hope but the conviction of Brazil's men a vision that Brasilia will hasten the country's march forward president kubacheck may have sounded the proper note when he said I awakened the giant and shook him from north to south [Music] Brasilia so obviously this was a big deal for Brazil putting themselves on the map as a you know economic entity as a you know hmm a force to reckon with and I did not see who made this I want to say it was humble humble oil rewinding it by hand note engine production tangent films no that's interesting there's others in this series that are actually buy an oil company so I'm kind of interested in that beautiful architecture though but man you know not unlike the Empire Plaza and Albany beautiful buildings but some of them were not very hospitable to the citizens and sometimes we're needlessly expensive I was kind of looking to see if there was a if you look up Brazil Brasilia city of the future there's a lot of these kind of like well it was great when it started but it cost too much and you know weren't very utilitarian buildings which is kind of what they needed so that's history for you and this is why one of the reasons I like collecting and watching these films is because you know this is something that this when this film came out Brasilia was being built and was opening and was this big thing so it was this is kind of a promotional thing for that area Standard Oil that's who did this know Standard Oil sponsored the film and they probably had oil interests or definitely in South America so how do you guys like the kind of mixed bag of a variety of different things do you like this or do you like the themed you know all the films are going to be about pasta you know or food do you like kind of the randomness of it let me know in the comments I personally like it because every film is different you know we're showing a lot of short films so that's pretty cool this is another stinky film see if this how this one goes that's the problem so a lot of these films is that this is it you know they got a couple years and then they're gone so I you know I'm watching these digitizing them but I'm actually gonna probably take some of these and scan them and 4k so that we have a when the film itself goes away then we have a good representation of it you know some people say 4k might be overkill yeah whatever it's just hard drives hundreds and hundreds of hard drive this might be another oil film I can't really tell the label is kind of faded this one is Navajos look ahead this is Indian country land of the Navajo in southeastern Utah near the four corners the only point in the US where four states meet wild rugged majestic once a sea bottom now a desert geologists call this the paradox Basin paradox Basin is well named for paradoxically the Navajo is proud of his land despite an age-old struggle to wrest a living from it Kelvin cloth she and his Uncle Bill Draper Navajo Ranger will tell you that theirs is the largest Indian tribe and this the largest reservation 24,000 square miles a new source of pride and tribal income is the thriving oil industry on their reservation Kelvin with his uncle on patrol had never before seen an oil well there were none until recent years and four years before that so many dry holes were drilled looking for oil but oilman called this the graveyard [Music] at a drilling rig below white mesa bill and calvin visit our key browning a drilling and production foreman this is well number seven on navajo oil lease 106 of the carter division of humble oil and refining company we're just in time to see a daily round-trip completed round trip is oilman's lingo for the job of pulling drill pipe changing a worn-out drill bit and returning to the business of making hole we're drilling in shale sixteen hundred feet down and have almost four thousand more feet to go gushers and very shallow oil wells are relics of the past now deep holes have to be drilled with no guarantee of success carter alone spent eight million dollars in ten years and drilled fifteen dry holes before drilling its first producer in the four corners its competitors had similar experience our well is being drilled in an established field that means it will probably find oil a mile straight down initially it should add of almost 300 barrels a day to our nation's oil production equally important to the Navajos it will increase the tribes income for the benefit of all its people for it is tribal policy to use all natural resources for the long-range good of its people [Music] one benefit already realized is the fine San Juan River Bridge it was partially financed with Navajo oil revenues to connect practically isolated areas of the reservation its construction represents tribal state federal and industry cooperation crude oil in the ground benefits no one above ground in the desert its energy is still unused its transportation to refineries for conversion into useful products is the next step handling that step is the latest thing in oilfield equipment an automatic custard a transfer unit through electronic controls it gathers oil and natural gas from nearby wells prepares both for shipment and puts them into separate pipelines the oil and gas are first separated in tall slender towers the gas is piped to a processing plant the oil goes into big tanks each holding 1,500 barrels and then into pipelines to California or the Gulf Coast electronic circuits control the whole process they automatically switch pumps off and on move well production through separators and tanks and keep records of the quantities of oil and gas put into the pipelines at the automatic header which collects oil from 25 wells Archy browning draws off a sample [Music] Kelvin's nose proves its crude oil all right the same oil that Indians gathered from Springs in western Pennsylvania over a century ago the wells controlled by this half-million dollar plant can produce 12,000 barrels a day that's enough oil to supply the United States for just about two minutes [Music] bill and Kelvin will see the control board it's in a building oilmen call a doghouse this complicated electronic panel does everything but think it even writes its own reports whoever said that oil and water do not mix never saw a desert oil field in Utah oil and water constantly worked together this water hole for example was drilled by oil men to supply an exploratory test well no oil was found but the water well was given to the Navajos who heard sheep and goats for a living the stock tank and trough were added by the tribe [Music] both Calvin and Bill are experienced campers bill served overseas with the Armed Forces Kelvin is a boy scout at their campsite beside the San Juan Kelvin in all of his 12 years has never been so far from home Calvin's home is in Window Rock Arizona capital of the Navajo Nation and colorful tourist resort Window Rock named for its curious rock formation has breathtaking scenery it is the center of government and culture for the 85,000 Navajos [Music] it is also navajo headquarters for the Federal Bureau of Indian Affairs protective agency for all American Indians hoes with income from oil and other resources are gradually becoming self-sufficient they elect their own leaders in a Council of 74 representatives who make laws and control tribal funds typical executives under Navajo chairman Paul Jones and vice-chairman Scott Preston are these two young administrators J Morris McCabe is executive secretary to the tribe a member of the school board and a driving force for Navajo progress Manuel Begay legislative secretary dedicates his career to tribal law and representative government now the whole council Hall seat of government and the place where the big search for oil really begins here the tribe by competitive bids has leased over 2 million acres of land to oil companies for exploration here it also negotiates payment for every barrel of Navajo oil produced a tourist attraction is the window rock itself Calvin frequently climbs to the top his vantage point provides majestic views and almost a picture window on his present and future spread out below are the places and people working for him today all around is the land of his future beneath its soil and in its forests are the resources of a better life his tribe is seeking [Music] to lead its march of progress tribal leaders are wisely concentrating on education with federal state and religious educators the Navajos are successfully fighting illiteracy scarcely 10 years ago only about half the Navajo children attended school attendance is nearly 95% Calvin attends a fine public school and later on he'll have an opportunity for college on a tribal scholarship [Music] the annual Navajo tribal Fair has all the sights sounds and spicy aromas of every Country Fair [Music] even Marshall music Navajo style [Music] a lasting monument to wise tribal spending is the Civic Center at Window Rock it was built with the Navajos income from oil at fair time it's the exhibit hall throughout the year it presents movies concerts and sports events for all now its rich with the world-famous Navajo handicrafts and artwork and well supplied with information about tribal health and vocational assistance available to the Navajos a short bike hop away it's Calvin's home and a comfortable tribal housing project [Music] sister Patty is just 18 months old his mother is a telephone operator at Navajo headquarters his father guy clusky is employed at the tribes power plant [Music] next morning Calvin and Bill resumed their patrol ranger duties frequently keep bill away overnight for provisions there's the Trading Post of mr. and mrs. Elisha blared anethe Utah theirs is one of several hundred Navajo trading posts licensed by the federal government Trading Post to the marketplaces for handy work such as the valuable turquoise jewelry made by the Navajos jewelry worn by men and women serves as the family bank account it is frequently pledged for credit in the store and redeemed over and over again but traders are more than store keepers they are also the advisors and Friends of the Navajos each Trading Post is a modern remnant of the general store familiar to our grandparents [Music] Blair's trading post a school and the Navajo chapter house make up the village of Anna the new chapter house financed with tribal oil money is one of 98 meeting places on the reservation heading southward to the San Juan Basin our travelers visit another tribal oilfield at chimney rock noumic humble has an agreement with the Navajos to produce oil here production superintendent edy Wolcott is in charge the drilling program has been completed here and humble has 40 wells at work each delivering about 40 barrels a day it also goes by pipeline to the West Coast or refining Calvin goes aloft for the view from atop a thousand barrel storage tanks his vantage point might easily give a symbolic view of a brighter future for it shows a land awakened a land blessed with oil and with uranium coal and timber equally important are the energies of his people the ambitions of his leaders and their progressive spirit tribal chairman Paul Jones summed it up recently in a report to the council a fresh wind is blowing across our reservation he said it's the wind of progress for our people kelvins people and generations yet to come will reap that wind of progress [Music] [Applause] yes so that's the same series as the Brasilia City of Hope film that we just saw before what a coincidence they were not in the same on the same shelf or the same stack so that's fascinating very similar although the this company McConkey it was different than the last one which was like tenant tenant or something like that so I guess Standard Oil had multiple production teams going out and traveling the globe doing doing these promotional pieces because oil is great we love it so yeah so the standard oil is excellent really fun dinner oil was yes no you're right yes oh right I'm reading some of the comments thanks guys for commenting it's I'm basically in the archive by myself tonight normally I have a guest but it was the holidays so it was harder to wrangle people and also I was just showing a bunch of random stuff so I don't I don't know but I'm happy to share them with folks like you across the wide internet before it used to be you'd have to come sit on a crappy couch drinking crappy beer and watch these films at a party or you know some other excuse to bust out a projector this is now we're using technology to do this and the internet fast internet connection and some digitization equipment makes this easy all right so all this talk about the future this is a film that I've got recently from another archive which basically the problem with archives is that they often run out of space and so they have to kind of hone in and call that a collection and start you know realizing that okay what's important what's our mission so I've gotten several films probably hundreds of films from archives that were like well this isn't what we collect we collect things about our state or we collect things about our university or whatever you can have all the other films and I've gotten some amazing things that way this is the first one I've seen in this collection and probably got a hundred films he didn't deliver to me so this is a film about the future so enjoy south carolina is beautiful and south carolina electric and gas is working to keep it that way while ensuring a ready supply of electricity for today's needs we are using new technology and making electricity we're improving the efficiency of our generating plants and we're building ahead today to provide electricity for tomorrow and now South Carolina electric and gas presents the science screen report the science green report developments in science engineering and medicine which help solve the problems of modern life [Music] [Music] what will tomorrow's car be like no one can say precisely nevertheless it is clear that the future car will be shaped by three major challenges [Music] improving productivity throughout the industry developing more fuel-efficient engines and managing the cars environmental impact this is a report on that ongoing research effort by engineering science and technology science reshapes the future god [Music] the automotive industry faces a major problem in the 1980s how to apply engineering science to better compete in the new global marketplace [Music] new answers include computer-aided design useful in the downsizing and down waiting of new models this is a computer representation of a designs natural vibration pattern viewing it designers can modify the structure or other factors to manage such motions another tool thermography maps patterns of energy transmission including transmission of mechanical shocks and so helps designers reduce impact forces in crashes [Music] with the cars structure set the stylists can begin these experts work in clay to better visualize the shape subtle details [Music] they also employ a special computer system which translates the clay shape directly into paper drawings and blueprints saving thousands of man-hours [Music] the design prototypes then undergo Windtunnel tests to learn their aerodynamic properties [Music] dragged on a car accounts for one third of its energy use so any reduction in drag will lead to decreases in fuel consumption in this case the design builds up too much turbulence behind the car slowing it the design will therefore be modified rebuilt and retested in the wind tunnel until the problem is under control materials experts are seeking strong lightweight polymers heavy duty plastics for use in car components in this test material the thermoplastic polypropylene is combined with tiny graphite fibers for greater strength [Music] in another test an electron microscope is used to record the structure of a polyester resin reinforced and lightened via a mass of tiny hollow glass bubbles with structure appearance and materials set testing of components can begin failures here will lead to redesign and retesting if the new car has any weaknesses they must be discovered now [Music] a major problem throughout the industry is metal fatigue failures of metal components due to stress the challenge to detect signs of potential failure it's time we took some momentum okay I'll turn on the voltage electron detector this apparatus may lead to a new solution it detects electron emission minut amounts of electricity given off by areas showing fatigue by measuring electron emissions the instrument can help predict the lifetime of components such detectors may someday prove useful throughout the industry [Music] a second challenge to automotive engineers is the need for fuel economy driving more kilometers per litre of fuel [Music] the familiar spark ignition engine continues to be refined combustion physics studies employing laser beams are one approach [Music] the laser provides data on temperatures and atomic and molecular components in the combustion flame aiding in research towards more complete combustion [Applause] [Music] lasers are now a frequently used scientific tool this laboratory makes its own specialized lasers led tin sulfur selenium and tellurium are combined the mixture is then heated until vaporize [Music] cooling it condenses into a crystal which will become the energy focusing element of a specialized laser [Music] a stratified charge engine is studied by a laser beam and stop-motion photography through a quartz window [Music] the stop-motion film reveals mixing of fuel spray and air prior to ignition a stratified or layered fuel air mixture rich near the spark plug leaner near the chamber walls allows use of less fuel per cycle to produce combustion one promising alternate powerplant is the gas turbine engine such gas turbines can run on many fuels kerosene gasoline diesel oil alcohol gasohol or others but because gas turbines run in extremely high temperatures they call for special heat-resistant materials [Music] the remix flame is a nice job [Music] research on electric vehicles employing lithium sulfur cells or nickel oxide cells may someday lead to electric cars with greatly extended ranges the automobiles environmental effects are a third challenge [Music] in this lab sophisticated recording instruments map sources of engine noise a step towards quieter cars [Music] much current research focuses on engine emissions here at diesel engines emissions are analyzed by our laser optics [Music] but laboratory studies such as this one of exhaust emissions chemistry are not in themselves sufficient for instance conditions in the real atmosphere often vary greatly for this reason at locations where environmental problems may exist field data is collected by experts to add to their understanding of emissions effects [Music] this project focuses on emissions controls for tomorrow's engines using catalytic systems similar to today's catalytic converters [Music] today [Music] tests involve an electron energy loss spectrometer which measures adherents of pollutant molecules to the surface layer of the catalyst it does this by reflecting an electron beam off catalyst crystal surfaces the amount of energy absorbed is related to the strength of the chemical bonds [Music] micro processors tiny built-in computers can now precisely regulate many fuel combustion factors and so reduce exhaust emissions sensors in the exhaust and engine allow the microprocessor to adjust the fuel air mixture so to maximize combustion and so minimize carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide emissions future cars may employ several micro processors to improve performance [Music] the final test of any engineering effort is its impact on man here a test subject pedals in a controlled flow through environment to learn what effects if any is body exhibits from suspected air pollutants [Music] once stylists shape tomorrow's cars largely as they chose now engineers and automotive scientists set the limits on their designs what will tomorrow's cars be like smaller safer lighter made of new materials more fuel-efficient but with fewer environmental impacts tomorrow's car a vehicle for tomorrow's world's [Music] the science screen report has been presented by South Carolina electric and gas company the company that is providing for today's electric needs while planning ahead for the future [Music] sorry about that it kind of ended quicker than I thought it would so this is this science screen report which was made by Allegro films and what they would do is they would put together these kind of package things about technology and different types of science so biology engineering medical things and would release these films and they would get sponsorship by people like the South Carolina power company or I've seen different ones like a foundry company in Pennsylvania this is very comparable to another series that came out called the Hurst excuse me screen news digest which was also sponsored by different companies like Pepsi I have a bunch of that say like you know this shows Pepsi baladi bottling in this beautiful assembly line of Pepsi bottles and then it was some sort of news thing of the day these are pretty cool though cuz this is all late seventies early eighties Tech and I kind of forgot about this about these series and I might have to watch more delve more into these because they all purport to show the what the future is going to be like and it's interesting to see what happen because you know what was that like 40 years ago and so car manufacturing now different power sources there was no mention of electric it was all combustion they came up with a motor that burns anything and no mention of batteries even though there were definitely electric cars back in the day there you go to science all right wonder what time are we looking at all right we have one more [Music] [Music] [Applause] the fixed stars in our firmament have through the ages given man a feeling of security we have always wanted to believe that we have our feet firmly planted on a solid earth with a protective heaven above but science has continually whittled away at this idea for some time we have known that our earth in reality is only a changing ball of rock and soil water and air held together by a tenuous gravity spinning and whirling in space around our Sun and even as a planet we are not very special being only one of nine in orbit around the mother Sun our Sun itself a star and only a small middle-aged one as stars go is a kind of lost child on the outskirts of its galaxy which we can see in the sky as the Milky Way it is only one of hundreds of billions of stars in our galaxy which is only one of hundreds of billions of galaxies all of which are in constant motion if we are not unchanging in space neither are we eternal in time our Sun five billion years old will in another five billion years or so burn itself out and in doing so expand and absorb all its planets as countless other stars have done before our sons only real distinction that we know of thus far is that it has people whirling around it the question is might this have happened elsewhere in the universe or are we alone it was recently discovered that stars and gases in space emit natural radio waves which can be picked up and amplified by radio telescopes the Jodrell Bank radio telescope in England the Green Bank radio telescope in West Virginia and this one at Arecibo in Puerto Rico can be called man's largest ears the bowl of the telescope a thousand feet across made of half-inch able to focus even extremely weak radio signals from space in searching for life on other worlds the theory is that intelligent civilizations in the universe would use natural radio frequencies as a means of communicating with one another by listening to signals from interstellar space intelligent codes could be distinguished from the patterns of natural radio waves radio astronomer of Cornell University and director of the Arecibo ionospheric observatory dr. Frank Drake conducted project Ozma the first search for intelligent life in space by radio telescope some years ago it was suggested by professors Morrison and cocconi at Cornell that there might be other civilizations in space attempting to send us messages we use very sensitive and ingenious detecting devices to search for intelligent signals amongst the static which comes to us from the interstellar space so in 1960 we made a short search for such signals with existing telescopes such as the 85-foot telescope at Green Bank using the 21 centimeter line frequency and we looked at there was time in fact to look at only two stars the ones we picked of course for the two nearest stars which are like the Sun the stars toss CD and the constellation of Cetus the whale and epsilonr rittany in the constellation of aridness we found no evidence for extraterrestrial intelligence signals but now we must realize that this was a an extremely limited search and the fact that we found nothing should not discourage us or caused us to think that any future search is going to fail one can estimate that a search which has a good chance of succeeding will take perhaps 30 years but if one is going to make a realistic search this is what is required and anything less than this is really not worth the effort because the chance of success is so small surely the results of the detection of extraterrestrial signals are going to be one of the most exciting things that ever happened while some scientists in the discipline of astronomy pressed the search for intelligent life in the distant stellar regions beyond our solar system with the big ears and eyes of the radio and optical telescopes some perhaps more down-to-earth investigators feel they would be making an historic discovery by a less ambitious find these men are called EXO biologists they are looking for microbiologic forms of life lesser than intelligent man and perhaps higher than the lowly virus something between the organic molecule and the bacteria that might have evolved outside the earth the most likely candidates for such a search are the planets Mars and Venus Earth's nearest neighbors in the solar system the Mariner spacecraft has been our principal vehicle for unmanned planetary exploration the planetary program is carried out by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory operated by the California Institute of Technology for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration dr. William H Pickering is the director Mars and Venus of course are the two closest planets to the earth in some ways we know more about Mars and we do about Venus because Venus is always covered with clouds we do not believe we have ever seen down to the surface of Venus that is for the telescope from the earth whereas in the case of Mars weave we usually see the surface of Mars Mars on the other hand as a planet which astronomers for many years have compared with the earth the size is a little smaller than the earth it happens that the day on Mars is almost exactly the same length as a day on the earth the year is about twice as long as a year on the earth the seasons change in the same manner that they do on the earth in other words the spin axis of Mars is tilted about the same way that the axis of the earth is tilted all of this has led astronomers to to compare Mars with the earth in many ways and of course the one comparison which one must always make is what about life is Mars a suitable planet for life as we know it it is feasible from what we know about life on Earth that life could exist on Mars dr. Richard s young chief of the exobiology division of NASA's Ames Research Center life on Earth probably arose as the result of a very natural sequence of events we think we know what the primitive atmosphere of the earth was like before there was any life on the earth we think we know what types of energies are available on the primitive earth before there was any life on earth biological evolution took over and the atmosphere was changed rather drastically until we have the sort of atmosphere we have on the earth today and we have the tremendous diversity of life that we have today a subsequent result over the next say 3 billion years of biological evolution in fact then just about any primitive planet during its early history should have undergone a similar sequence of events they were formed obeying the same laws of physics and chemistry they should have had the same type of primitive atmosphere and probably underwent chemical evolution and watch the same way the earth did now what we need is proof of that if we can find life on one planet say Mars then it is very probable that elsewhere within our own galaxy they must certainly be planets comparable to us with life-forms comparable to earth the optical telescope has been the principal tool of astronomers for studying the Stars and the planets from the days of Galileo centuries ago the 200-inch mirror in the Palomar Observatory telescope in California can be called man's largest eye it can bring into view the farthest observable objects in the universe called quasars points of light believed to be billions of light-years away and moving away from us at incredible speeds another kind of telescope is the 26-inch refractor or direct view telescope like this one at the United States Naval Observatory in Washington DC to find planets comparable to earth revolving around stars comparable to our Sun dr. Kai strand scientific director of the observatory and his former colleague dr. peter van de Kamp of Swarthmore College used a telescope of this type they wanted to verify the argument that planets are abundant in the universe in 1963 van de Kamp announced the discovery of a planet orbiting a neighboring star the first planet ever to be detected beyond our solar system although it has never been directly seen depends what you mean by seen Harvard astronomer Carl Sagan explains how the existence of this planet was deduced the second nearest star system the Sun is called Barnard's star named after an American astronomer ie Barnard and the motion of this star of course the sky is not a more or less uniform line on the Black Mountain stars as you might expect we instead oscillates and the wiggly path is due to the presence of a dark companion we don't see the dark companion but we can quite reliably deduce its presence from the Wiggles and motion of this time let's suppose this is Jupiter and this is the Sun and the two of them are moving of course of course through space together however Jupiter is also going around the Sun and when Jupiter is on this side of the Sun its gravitational attraction pulls the Sun a little bit that way when it's on the other side of the Sun it pulls the Sun a little bit that way and so as the Sun goes through space it has in addition to its ordinary motion that way it has but saying up and down wiggle due to the motion of the invisible Jupiter okay and so the wiggle tells you the presence of Jupiter and not only that it tells you its mass and it tells you how far away it is if you were writing the nosecone of a rocket to the moon this is what you would see as you approach the lunar surface for a landing these pictures were made by television cameras in Ranger 9 the unmanned American picture-taking expedition to the moon in March of 1965 since then thousands of spectacular close-up pictures of the moon surface have been returned by surveyor one which soft landed on the moon in June of 1966 pictures from the probe of lunar orbiter in August of 1966 showed our planet as seen from the vicinity of the moon this representation of the lunar landscape shows us what a man might see from the moon a bright Sun in a sky blackest night due to the lack of light diffusion by an atmosphere and the earth visible in the lunar night hanging in its black sky like an oversized moon itself surveyor 1 and lunar orbiter returned much valuable information and they have also shown us what we have known the moon to be a body without atmosphere without water without life not unlike the moon in some aspects is Earth's neighbor in the solar system the planet Mars when in July of 1965 the Mariner 4 spacecraft completed a successful Mars flyby after a journey of eight months and 325 million miles passing within 6,500 miles of the planet 21 pictures of the Martian surface were returned to Earth including one of the most remarkable scientific photographs of this age Mariners 11th picture of Mars many scientists felt that this picture settled once and for all the century long controversy over Martian canals in 1877 the Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli claimed to have seen canals which he thought could be evidence for intelligent life on Mars as late as 1908 the American astronomer Percival Lowell confirmed the sightings the spacecraft Mariner was too far away in its flyby to be able to show decisively what exists on the Martian surface but most scientists agree that if life does exist there it will not be intelligent but of a very low order of course the early astronomers saw canals and I saw a lot of other things that dr. Richard Janos Ames Research Center we no longer think canals are really exist on Mars we think there are primarily optical illusions and then aren't something that the Martians constructed to transport water from the pole to the equator and keep the deserts wet and all that sort of thing Mars has although it's a harsh environment by biological standards Mars has an atmosphere it has a very rare atmosphere it's a smaller planet has a lower gravitational field and its atmosphere is probably Oh something like 1/100 there are perhaps even closer to one one thousandth of the total pressure on the surface of the earth it also contains water life can't exist without water but the fact that Mars has water is terribly significant now unfortunately from a biological point of view the amount of water in the atmosphere of Mars is very slight it's about one one thousandth of the amount that one would detect in the Earth's atmosphere with a similar observation there are other features of Mars that were reasonably familiar with astronomers have been observing it for something approaching a hundred years now and they've known that there are light areas and they're dark areas the dark areas are assumed to be or at least by the early astronomers were assumed to be vegetation light areas were assumed to be desert there are also pole caps on Mars which have been shown to be water however their although they're pretty extensive the total amount of water in these pole caps is very slight probably nothing more than a layer of frost however these pole caps do receive seasonally in the spring Polka precedes at the same time the pole cap is receding or disappearing the dark areas are getting darker implying at least to the early astronomers that well water is becoming available from the poll caps and the vegetation in the dark areas is literally inhaling water and is flourishing during the spring we really simply don't know enough about the intimate detail of the surface of Mars to critically analyze any of these visual phenomena all we can do is speculate about them and so far they're the best of our speculations has failed to demonstrate that life on Mars must be ruled out and in fact the best of what we know still leaves well within the range of possibility the idea that life may well exist on Mars and would be well worth the search if you will I feel that in the search for extraterrestrial life the three approaches one firstly the one that you named to go to Mars and see whether there's life there the other one which Frank Drake has for some time tried out listening to radio communication from outer space the third one is the one that we are working on here retracing the path by which life appeared dr. Cyril pnom parama chemist at Ames Research Center is searching for answers to extraterrestrial life by studying the chemical evolution of life on Earth from the information we have today we know that the earth is four and a half billion years old let me put that down as one of our starting point four point seven billion years is the exact mean given life as we know it or the first evidence of life in the fossil record is about three billion now biology or the Darwinian theory takes over from here see you'll find the life evolving into a whole variety of organisms we know that mammals are around a hundred and sixty million and then so on we come to the evolution of man finally what went on before this from the time the earth was formed or even further back from the time the solar system was formed this can be described as chemical evolution we know that down the solar system is about five billion and then we go backwards in time you'll come to the origin of the universe which is greater than ten billion some put it at 13 some at 20 but we know definitely it's more than ten billion years now we have some starting points to go on we know that 90% of the universe is hydrogen right so the hydrogen then by a series of reactions during the birth of a star gave rise to the other elements of the periodic table carbon nitrogen oxygen and so on in other words you would help thermonuclear reactions taking place within a star so the idea of chemical evolution then is a gradual evolution of hydrogen the initial matter of the universe to give the elements of the periodic table to give the constituents of the early earth atmosphere the methane ammonia and water simple chemistry tells us that the carbon will be in the form of methane the nitrogen will be in the form of ammonia and the oxygen will be in the form of water so the early atmosphere of a planet would made of methane ammonia and water from here on we will show us what happened the early atmosphere being acted upon by lightning or wallet light from the Sun or heat producing organic molecules till the early oceans became something like a primordial soup so from a primitive atmosphere we are hoping to go to the stage when the two molecules that are important to living things the nucleic acid and the protein were formed first molecules capable of replication so it's a stepwise process it appears to be a beautiful plan going all the way from the hydrogen atom till the time you get to the intelligent human being so there it is a coherent story it is something which appears most logical it is it is rational so the discovery of life on Mars with to the world to people studying the origin of life as a matter of fact in my mind the search for extraterrestrial life is only part of a question of the study of the origin of life this is the scientifically broader question origin of life in the universe I'm going to Mar the unique opportunity that we have perhaps a one only opportunity that we have of showing this figure of their life on Mars and especially if we can show that it's already no different from the origin of life on Earth or it is independent then we'll have a very hard thing answer to this question of uniqueness in life new york times science editor Walter Sullivan author of the book on which this program is based raised this question with Nobel Prize winning chemist dr. Harold Urey dr. your a a lot of the discussion on the origin of life boils down to the question of whether there are other there are other worlds other solar systems you believe there are it is my belief that if you have conditions such as we have on the earth life will spontaneously appear I don't know how long it takes it may be a million years maybe a billion years but sometime life as we know it will here every indication is that the properties of the elements in the most distant stars that we look at are the same as those that we of those that we have on earth the physical universe is the same everywhere that is our conclusion the laws are the same as far as we go as we understand them and this of course means that the chemistry of carbon nitrogen oxygen hydrogen the four abundant elements in living things the chemical properties of these elements will be the same wherever we are in the universe and therefore we expect that they will have the capacity to evolve into what we would call living organisms no matter where we go now we don't expect that they will be the same some time in 1973 a spacecraft will take off from Earth its name will be Voyager the Voyager a new kind of space vehicle will begin a trek to the planet Mars the first of a series of missions that will eventually carry sophisticated life detection devices to the Martian surface the success of a Voyager mission would be a scientific breakthrough in our unmanned planetary program it will be our first attempt to soft land an instrument package on another planet looking beyond Voyager to 1977-1979 and the 1980s space engineers are already at the hard practical model stage of designing devices that are still emerging from the minds of scientific dreamers one such device designed for a Mars life search is the automated biological laboratory called an a/b l1 concept of it has been developed by the Aero neutronic division of the Philco corporation it would operate remotely and automatically on Mars so says space research engineer William Hostetler but basically there there are several processes that to be performed first of course you have to obtain physical samples of the of the surface of Mars physical samples of the soil because that's where the organisms will congregate if there are living organisms I might comment incidentally that we are concerned more with the lower forms of life the the molecular forms of life rather than elephants and horses and so forth we are prepared to take pictures of these things if they happen to be there the abl is divided really into three basic integrated subsystems one of these is a sampling subsystem that is used to obtain the surface samples from the soil samples from the surface of Mars at the very bottom of the abl and directly underneath there is a system that uses a brush and vacuum system to obtain samples of the Martian surface directly under the abl also there is a core drill system that drills into the surface about 10 feet to obtain subsurface samples in case the water availability or other conditions make it more likely as a place for Martian Biological life a second system picks up samples around the abl with a sampler as you see here which is located linkage that attaches it to the main body and will pick up samples from a generally and around the abl location a third system is used for getting samples from a considerably further distance and in particular selected areas that the visual survey system has pointed out as being particularly desirable because possibly they are warmer than the surrounding spots or they have a different appearance that might appear to be vegetation or something of that nature so a sampling line is deployed ballistically fired out like a small rocket carrying this line to some distance up to possibly a thousand feet from the abl location and a sampler then similar to the one that works in the vicinity of the abl is carried up on an elevator latched onto a trolley on this line and deploy it out to the desired spot to obtain the surface sample returning and delivering it to the operating parts of the APL these samples are then processed and brought into the interior of the abl for chemical processing prior to reading out the experiment the chemical processing equipment is located generally in the central area of the abl in the form of 13 chemical processors located circumferentially around the central core certain supplies water and certain gases are stored in tanks around the center of the abl other chemical reagents are stored in ampules which hold individual quantities in this area that surrounds the processors these ampules are are put into cartridges like this so that they feed to the outer end and can be picked up by the processing by the transport device which internally then moves them to the proper location to conduct the chemical analysis after the analysis is completed the samples are then transferred to the instruments to read out the experiment results the data from these are then processed internally and transmitted through the high-gain system back to earth if the scientific and engineering problems that must be solved to accomplish this feat are not overwhelming the political obstacles may indeed be insurmountable Congress will soon have to make the most important decision on space policy since President Kennedy first won approval to commit us to the space age mr. Walter Sullivan what a wonderful planet is our world and how far it may be to anything else like it we have reason to believe there are other planets blessed with our advantages a kindly stable parent star a well-placed orbit a suitable atmosphere dry continents for advanced life forms great seas within which their primitive ancestors evolved but the fragile green hue of life appears only here and there on our planet as seen from space its hold is tenuous if any bread passions overcome reason we can now render the planet uninhabited is that the fate of all technological societies it is up to us on this wonderful world of ours to prove that it is not so [Music] you okay so as a as a person who loves science I love that film as a film collector of very disappointed I was really really really hoping for some some shaky footage I was hoping for some you know some Hillbillies talking about what they saw after a fishing trip I was hoping for grainy photos I was hoping for hangar 18 that was hoping for something a little bit more exploitive than what we just saw a bunch of scientists rational scientists talking about aerospace engineers talking about this I wanted average citizens chiming in on the mysterious lights that they saw one night so oh well I mean it's a great film I'm happy I have it and I showed it I have other films that actually deal with this and actually have a lot of the common characters and I do actually have some episodes of in search of that came out before it was a series that had like Rod Serling as the narrator as opposed to Leonard Nimoy and they tend to be more exploitive and very light on the science but in fact I did a show it was was god an astronaut and basically it was a show to film well I had I had two films one was Chariots of the Gods or a in search of Chariots of the Gods and then the other was Novas basically debunking of Chariots of the Gods and so I showed the first reel of both and then I had the audience vote on whether they wanted to see the the second reel of the documentary about Chariots of the Gods or the debunking materials God's excuse me and they wanted to continue seeing Chariots of the Gods they wanted to see the proof like that we were visited by aliens ancient aliens and it's it's delightful to see how those currently made documentaries are showing up on the History Channel Discovery Channel Science Channel etc showing us that people just love that salacious exploitive stuff and science kind of takes a backseat when we kind of talk about stuff like that alas anyways thanks everybody again for coming out coming out for tuning your little Internet device to watch AV geek with AV geek saw so the next thing that we're gonna do I think it's gonna be December 17th that's a tentative because I'm not sure I don't know my family might have something planned then but I'm thinking right now I might show films about toys so maybe some commercials with toys in them yeah we'll see I did a show about toys years ago and I can I've got some more films that would be appropriate about toys so hopefully you can join me December 17th again thank you everybody who tuned in who is a patreon donor it's you know it's little things it's like five bucks a month or whatever people put towards things that really add up and allow us to to buy new films online to buy new equipment to buy splicing tape surprisingly splicing tape is expensive and these films need to be spliced so you're paying for it so I appreciate that thank you we might put some of these online on YouTube and Internet Archive we kind of haven't done in a while just because we've digitizing a bunch of stuff and we have been digitizing a lot of things in the interim so we're doing probably like 20 films a week that we haven't been showing here but we're gonna put online so there's gonna be hundreds of films coming on I think in the long time that AV geeks will start putting a bunch of them online so that is thanks to you guys too so your interest and your desire to see more of these films makes it all worthwhile so I will see you have a good December and we'll see you on the 17th if you're local in Raleigh go to the AV geeks Facebook page there's a lot of events coming up that you can come and see me in person and hear me say uh just as many times as I did on here so I've been have a good night and we will talk soon take care
