hi everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the 80 Geeks lunchtime streaming show which is um this is an introduction before we actually show the actual introduction um for the pre-recorded show I'm pretty pre-recorded here but I wanted to chime in about what happened on Sunday um basically uh uh let's see bring this up I was driving through West Virginia on route to Ohio and I hit this stretch of road on the uh West Virginia Turnpike and it was raining an insane amount very quickly and I tried to slow down and spun out um in hydroplaned and smooshed up my car I was very lucky uh in that I um had not uh hit anybody the airbags hadn't even really gone off but and also the fact that there was an embankment that I went down and then embankment I went up and the embankment I went up was enough to slow me and stop me from going into a guard rail or oncoming traffic so um incredibly Lucky in that regard um my wrist is a little sore because I think I was like holding the dashboard uh as I was rotating around uh screaming a bunch of profanity um and so thankfully I was rescued um the next day by my wife Katrina and so you can see I was sort of my shake hands with danger shirt which I'm still wearing um but uh so we're safe in a rental car and we're going to continue on our path to show films here at uh Ohio University in Athens Ohio and then we're going to make our way to Bloomington for some presentations and screenings on Friday so um thanks for all your kind words yesterday in the comments and uh I think we're gonna watch some films about thieves today so everybody um have fun and I'll see you soon bye uh so this is a pre-recorded show um because I am traveling and and I think we'll be traveling for a week thankfully I have assistants who are running things at the studio but I wanted to show you some new stuff I mean I talked about uh last week getting 20 boxes of films and I wanted to show you some of the stuff that we're getting so this is a film that's on the uh film scanner it is called to forgive a thief and this was made by Mel White who was a religious filmmaker whose son is Mike White who did a lot of Television I think he did School of Rock he did some other uh popular films um melwhite came out in the 80s is gay and there was a Schism when the Moral Majority basically condemned uh gay people and he was like no I can't participate in this but Mel White has made many many many uh religious films and uh so this one is pretty great it involves JD's you ready here we go this is to forgive a thief and joy thank you foreign Dusty you'll be leaving here in just a few days we want to help you get settled where will you go son we're trying to help you I don't need your help you're 18 and getting a late start Dusty you've got what it takes to succeed on the outside you've impressed us and we want to help you I wrote my father about going home good no better place to start than at home told me to go to hell my own father told me to go to hell where am I go now where can you go when nobody wants you foreign [Applause] [Music] neighborhood that boy is a criminal a convicted Thief dust is a teenager Mr Sterling he deserves another chance here in our community come judge Brian are you going to allow a small group of religious do-gooders to establish an outpost of delinquency in a residential area like Rolling Hills Estates the halfway house sponsored by Park Avenue Church is not an outpost of delinquency it is a Christian home where where broken boys can be rebuilt why don't these broken boys go back to their own homes for some do those who have parents who still want them but there are thousands of delinquent boys and girls released with nowhere to go like Dusty their problems began at home now here's a copy of a letter Dusty's father wrote telling his own son to go to hell would you send that toy home but George think of the influence these criminals will have on our children frankly I'm more concerned about the inference of your children than them higher honorable oh but they're the boys are here let's go meet them no thank you not now but if your plan fails we'll meet again soon enough in court with our lawyers good day judge Brian hello boys I want you to meet some real friends Mr and Mrs Smith hello this is Keith Dusty dick and Melvin yeah but you can just call me Gabby are you the people we're gonna live with since we never had a family of our own we we decided to go out and get one that's funny you don't look like jailers trailers no sir in fact you're going to live in real style with a room of your own and an allowance oh yeah how much allowance well we'll work that out together okay okay pop no [Music] pretty tough huh why'd you call him pop just for laughs I never had a real pot I'm gonna [ __ ] me when I was just a baby my grandpa had me for a while before he died he made me this boat this ain't bad me with an allowance yet man this is living shut up Gabby all right you don't have to get sore I like it here I mean what's wrong uh shut up I said shut up Christian halfway house what a laugh fancy jail they mean only off we're just trying to help look I can help myself I don't need them or their fancy experiment I'm no guinea pig you know [Music] may not be a pig but I'll bet you eat like one well come on hey what goes nothing just an accident Dusty did you break Gabby's boat you can at least say you're sorry I never say sorry to nobody [Music] Boys in our home we always start with a short word of thanks for the food would you join us father we are grateful for this food and for the boys who have come to share our home bless us all with our love in Christ's name amen well dig in hey wait a minute save some room for this say what's the occasion well it isn't every mother that inherits four handsome sons and that deserves a celebration well if we're going to be a family I thought we should have some basic rules from the start here we go judge Brian gave me a short list and I thought you fellas could help us make up the rest I know rule will take care of all the rest no rules oh Gabby a family with no rules is a family in trouble what sort of rules the judge give you the judge suggested that we set a curfew hour and if you need to be out later while you you call home and check in seems fair enough a few others include a hands-off policy on smokes and liquor they're off limits period say are you really serious about us making up the rest of the rules why not we're a family now and a family is run best by everyone working together oh Dusty would you get the door please how about some more chicken hey perfect timing but Steve well hi Mike you're just in time for pizza cake sit down and meet the boy hi Mike I'd like to meet our new family this is Keith it's Gabby hi Mike Dusty and Dick now Mike Mike is studying for the ministry yeah well don't uh don't hold that against me Mike's quite the surfer you boys should see him a surfing preacher what do I think of next that's why I came over the surf will probably be up tomorrow I thought you guys may want to go to the beach with me be on a surfboard no thanks you could get killed out there how about you Keith a dust you'll go he's The Brave One how about it Dusty no I have he's scared too I'm not scared I'm so you're not scared so go I'm scared [Music] isn't that one of those juvenile delinquents my dad was trying to keep out of Rolling Hills yeah we're lucky he'll drown them I don't know having them in Rolling Hills might be just what we need what do you mean you'll see hey Dusty come on back the big stuff comes later Cannon will ya I can take care of myself come on back I was doing all right sure champ but next time try going over it instead of under it come on why are you guys doing this anyway fun oh the house the cake surfing day why I don't know trying to help I guess we don't need any help no well I don't anyway well I do lots of times don't you ever feel lonely or scared no why should I I do I'll bet why should you probably because I'm human just like you that's rich you ever robbed anybody no I've been in a fight I'm not a bad one or in court or jail you don't know what it means to be scared first to run from your own shadow then you stop thinking about it from then on you're all right now you're never scared anymore is that what you mean what if it is whenever I get scared I pray you what I pray pray sure I just talked to God like I'm talking to you is God ever say anything to you no no not out loud but he's there I can tell how you sort of feel it it's like you're not alone anymore well how you know he's listening how do you know he's even interested in you that's why God sent his son to prove he really cares you really believe that stuff what stuff that's someone so big so way out is interested in you yes well how can you prove it because that's why we're doing all this to try and prove it well how are the parents are for strapping new Sons I think we'll survive judge the voice seemed right at home even the neighbors are warming up in fact several of the ladies have stopped by with cakes and casseroles it's a good thing too the boys can really put away the food you can't really blame the neighbors for their fears but now if they've seen the house in action they're more convinced that it's really going to work perhaps but let's hear how the boys are doing it's been quite an adventure we've asked the boys to help with the basic household chores and they pitched right in [Music] we tried to make worship a natural part of a home I have a reading prayer none of the boys had ever prayed before now all but Dusty are volunteered to say grace before O'Neill [Music] the boys came up with some strict rules and are pretty hard on each other when they're broken they vote on penalties they call it their Board of Education [Music] Mike has been the boy's best friend he's been introducing them all around the neighborhood without Mike's help getting the boys accepted by The In Crowd school could have been a pretty miserable Place Keith is older than the other boys yet he never finished eighth grade luckily one of the members of our church owns a taco stand he took Keith on and hopes to make him a manager of his own shop one day and Gabby's becoming quite a man himself one of the finest things is the way the young people at church have practically adopted the boys it's taken real patience to get them to drop the chips on their shoulders and try to fit in but it seems to be working the girls are having the best of success so far but then I guess that's the way it should be you seem happy for the first time all right [Music] judge the halfway house is doing wonders for the boys they have a home that's clean and happy and and a room to call their own and a place to bring their friends but most of all a church that really cares your experiment has been an adventure and a successful one with that last Sunday Gabby had a talk with our pastor about what it really means to be a Christian late that night he came down to have a chat with us about it come on in Gabby been sleepwalking no can't sleep something wrong no well today in church Dr Arnon me and I we were talking about being a Christian and stuff I don't think I understand it all yet do you mind helping me figure it all out later that night Gabby decided he wanted to become a Christian too it's only a start of course but an important start for Gabby his prayer proved that to us God I don't know much about you but what I know about me isn't all good I'm really sorry please forgive me and thanks I never had a father before who really loved me [Music] amen you see judge by simply opening up our home to these boys their lives and our lives are being changed oh I'm glad to hear it but but you folks know that we in juvenile Authority give you freedom to work as you think best now the courts often hesitate about getting the boys mixed up in religion however people like yourselves have proven through love that you have something that the boys really need frankly it'd do my old heart so much good if I could see the churches across this country pick up your idea they could do so much with so little if they'd only dare and there are thousands of young people who have nowhere to go but we have some bad news from our side of the fence well what kind of news well since the boys came to Rolling Hills there's been a rash of petty thefts in the neighborhood and first nobody complained but now we're not so sure but it couldn't be our boys no it it might be neighborhood children but please be extra careful for a while especially at night we will [Music] [Music] thank you foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] thank you [Music] why'd they kill him if he was God's son why didn't he fight back because he loved him oh come on you mean he loved the guys that killed him that's right he loved the Jews that hated him he loved the soldiers that killed him even loved the disciples that deserted him but why did he have to die well Christ had one plan Dusty and that was to prove God's love for all of us oh he proved it in many ways like Healing The Sick feeding the poor raising the Dead but he proved it best when he died I don't get it well after the soldiers beat the son of God stripped him they put those thorns in his face and they nailed him up they expected him to hate them but instead Christ looked down from that cross and he forgave them and that's the finest proof that God loves us keep saying us why we didn't kill him we didn't kill him no but same thing that made the Romans crucify the Son of God working in our lives what's that and we called it sin there's no other word for it something down inside of us it makes us do wrong when we really want to do right it caused us to lie to cheat steal th gang fights it causes black to hate white and white to hate black cause a civilized man to drop bombs burn cities and fire bullets whatever it is Dusty it's it's real in all of us only one way to stop it what way his way his way begins we admit we're sinners and it's hard you know why we're scared and lonely is because sin has come between us and God but up there on that cross he proved God will forgive us and all we have to do is admit our failure and to be sorry enough to ask for his forgiveness that's it you'll do the rest no I'm not scared anymore I'm not lonely I've Got a Friend a father who loves me enough to forgive me father who forgive me Dusty it's after 11 o'clock you're not usually out this late I've been thinking how dusty tell the truth what do you mean I'm telling you the truth I've been thinking sorry if I sound a little harsh judge Bryant said there's been a series of petty thefts in the Rolling Hills area and I'm overly nervous that someone might blame you boys you think I've been stealing again huh I didn't say that I just wanted to you think I've been stealing again I can never live it down can I not even here once a thief always a thief I can't never live it down can I nobody forgives a thief Dusty come back you don't understand Dusty [Music] go to hell son go to hell he died to prove he loved you [Applause] Dusty tell the truth even in my electoral again we just had one drink it was hot I kept you drinking I'll kill you will you turn off the TV why so I can hear you and Dad screaming at each other oh talk to your mother like that why not you do Boys in our home where you start each meal with a short curve Dustin you knew better than to steal your friends were the bad influence but you knew better I never say sorry to nobody forgive you nobody forgives a thief where will you go now Dusty where can you go when nobody wants you go to hell son go to hell oh yes Frank another burglary last night well it must be those kids it's got to be well don't worry Frank they'll be taken care of all right bye morning Ken where were you last night I thought I told you to be in before one I know Dad but we drove over to the beach last night and I lost track of the time why what's wrong someone broke into the old Donovan place last night and I think I know who did it you do who you know JD is over at the Smiths who else of course it's one of those JD's they're the ones have been doing all the stealing around judge Brian this is Conrad Sterling your halfway house experiment has gone far enough I think last night's burglary is proof that it's your JD's and not our young people who are up to the trouble and God thank you for the Smiths me and the guys wouldn't know about you if it wasn't for them bless this food in our home amen hello oh hello judge anything wrong well the boys and I were here last night we watched TV and waited up for oh boy well for Dusty he was upset over something I said and just went for a walk where's he going but judge he couldn't he wouldn't good morning say where's Dusty head in such a hurry had it yeah he passed me turn up the street we better go find him wait I'll go with you hey wait a minute what's happening well there was a burglary last night and they think it was Dusty Dusty that's stupid well I know but they're looking for him we better find him first [Music] [Applause] thank you [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] thank you [Music] [Applause] [Music] thank you [Music] laughs foreign where can I go now Dusty what happened even he won't forgive me listen I didn't tell you all the story about him when they killed him they killed two others see they were thieves Dusty they were being punished for their crime one was very bitter and he missed a chance of a lifetime the other one he lifted Christ and he has to be forgiven and Christ forgave him because Christ promised him eternal life and he loves us too in spite of all we've done and he proved it when he died I haven't been stealing Mike but last night proved I'm still a thief down inside Gabby told me that we might find you again judge do you really think it was dusty yes but on the telephone this morning you wouldn't let me finish last night's Burger didn't even get past the front window he forgave a thief yes will he forgive me yes [Music] forgive me please forgive me [Music] he forgave a thief and so do we Dusty you think someday I could come back you'll be back Dusty we'll be waiting thank you Gabby how about your boat I'm sorry it's all right in seminary we argue why Christ died now I know why to forgive a thief [Music] [Applause] great um of course the rich kids man the rich kids did it and then they blamed it on the on the the poor JDS hmm drove them back to uh drove them back to being a thief crazy what a wonderful melodrama that that is uh so this film I don't know if I've shown this before but um it's it has a soundtrack but it is um just music popular music and I'm not interested in getting um YouTube uh complaining so I'm just gonna run just regular projection sound and I'm gonna delete I'm gonna remove mute the audio so this is called the thief enjoy laughs so this is part of series I I got these um it's a donation um and there were so there's this the potheads and there's like two more and what it was is that there was a inner city uh kind of uh probably uh um Upper Manhattan um maybe the Bronx area or Harlem uh there was a youth uh filmmaking group that made a series of these films I think over one summer or maybe over one year and uh they're phenomenal they're really really great and you know the fact that they're using popular music is because that's what they were listening to at the time unfortunately I can't play it uh it will trigger all sorts of horrible things on YouTube and other places so um there is a music soundtrack to it but there isn't there's no dialogue but you can't hear anybody talking so all right finally um what time is it yeah I got time for one more film uh I've shown this one before but it's great it's uh very 1980s um has a attractive lady cop in it it's about stealing that's stealing enjoy [Music] this is the story of two friends Kathy and Heather this is also a story about stealing [Music] hello my name is Adrian Doyle I'm a police officer we all know that stealing taking something that doesn't belong to you and keeping it is wrong and if you wind up getting caught you'll be in trouble but there's something else to think about too and that's trust that's what this story is about trust and what happens to trust when a person begins stealing Heather and Kathy usually walk home together but today Kathy is walking home by herself she's thinking about her friendship with Heather trust and a little gold locket I told you not to take your rocket to school I think I won't get lost I don't think it was lost what do you mean I thought I might lose it at PE so I put in my desk where I went out into the yard with other kids we came back from PE I forgot to put it back on I remembered it just before the ball run to go home but when I looked at my desk it was gone somebody stole it somebody from your class did you tell Mrs Haynes the rocket wasn't that expensive it's not that big of a deal Kathy stealing is stealing it doesn't matter if you take something small or something big it's important for you to understand that and it's important for whoever took the locket to understand that as well I guess you're right but can I try and handle this please well okay but I want you to tell me what you decide [Applause] dear Heather I've decided to write this letter to you because it's hard for me to say what I have to say we've been friends for so long but I think we won't be friends anymore at least I don't think we can be the same kind of friends maybe if I'd done something sooner I wouldn't be writing this letter to you now maybe I should have said something way last fall that's when I first suspected something but at the time it didn't seem like a big deal [Music] Salon Mrs Haynes made me see after and feed the turtles Billy got sick at lunch and had to go home where did you get the marker bought it when you didn't have it this morning what really happened is I found it where what difference does it make it's not yours is it no I just wondered come on my mom's gonna be mad about me being late just tell her about the turtles she wouldn't want the turtles to starve when she how come you had to feed this stupid Turtles anyway I told you Billy got sick it was the first couple of weeks in the new school year there are boys and turtles and all kinds of things to think about too many things to be all that worried about where a felt marker came from anyway like you said I didn't lose the marker what difference did it make where it came from then about two weeks later something else happened you acted like it was nothing important but we both knew it was so my mom goes you can't have your ears pierced until you're 16. why don't you just do it until it was an accident oh right she's really gonna believe that someone poked holes in my ears by mistake well if you had pierced ears you could wear these where did you get those in this department store ten dollars didn't have enough money for these I don't know I just took them like them I didn't steal them or anything they were on the floor somebody had knocked them off the display counter if I hadn't picked them up somebody would have stepped on them and they would have been wrapped anyway yeah but you couldn't just put them back geez Kathy the store only had about 500 pairs of these on sale you think they're gonna mix two crummy earrings they don't even know they're gone was it stealing I mean stealing is a pretty heavy word it didn't seem like taking the earrings was the same thing exactly but like my mom said taking anything that belongs to someone else is stealing [Music] it's funny that day at the mall I thought about you taking the earrings and what if you had been caught and what would happen to you what I didn't think about was what the whole thing was doing to our friendship I mean a friend is someone you trust all the time always everyone could you take your seats please and give me your attention Ronald was missing a magnifying glass about this big it was on his desk just a few minutes ago did anyone take it perhaps one of you borrowed the magnifying glass that's understandable but Ron would like to know who has it boys and girls this is very serious because if someone didn't borrow it or take it by mistake the only thing I can think of is that someone stole it I would hate to think that anyone in this room would do anything like that so during recess please think about this what were you looking at me for I wasn't looking at you I'm really sure you weren't looking at me Kathy you'd think I ripped up Ronnie's stupid magnifying glass I didn't say that but you think it right I don't know well I know who took it and it wasn't me well who was it then it wasn't me besides if I told you you'd tell Mrs hands like I can't trust you anymore up until that minute I had thought that I was the one who couldn't trust you but then I realized that you could entrust me either and up stretch away over shoulders down and up reach half your foot heel forward and up stretch away keep that hip down I gotta take the second class no I'm too tired I think I'll just go home yeah me too look when I said yesterday I didn't mean it I know you want to do anything like Thomas's hands even if I have tried the stupid magnifying glass yeah sure maybe I will stay for another half take your foot reach past foot hurry up now it's a funny thing when trust starts to go I found myself thinking about really silly little things like that magic marker you had way last fall did you really find it two weeks ago somebody swiped a library book from Julie's Locker where were you when that happened these are questions that friends shouldn't have to ask about one another that is unless they don't trust each other anymore all right class let's get ready for PE something happened at school today it's funny for last year I never would have thought that you had anything to do with it now I don't know [Applause] thank you [Music] [Music] later I found out that someone had taken my locket from my desk suddenly I found myself asking those questions about you where were you were you really in the restroom I guess what I'm trying to say is I don't want friends that I have to ask questions like that about I want friends I can trust well I can see why you wanted to handle this yourself so you and Heather won't be friends anymore is that it what about the other kids that have had things taken what about Heather what if she keeps on taking things that don't belong to her do you want me to tell on her I couldn't do that well I just thought there might be something else besides just washing your hands of the whole thing hey Kathy how come you didn't meet me after school I wrote you a letter but maybe I should just tell you what somebody swipe my locket while we were at PE and you think I took it you ripped up other stuff not from Friends what do you think I am I know what you are Heather I know it maybe other people know it too geez she's stealing and stealing no matter whether it's from friends or people you don't know at all if you think I took your locket prove it prove you took it problem is I can't prove you didn't what was stolen in this story the things that were taken were not all that expensive a marker maybe a magnifying glass maybe a locket but the important thing that was stolen was the friendship between Kathy and Heather his mom had an interesting point was it enough for Kathy to say to Heather I can't be friends with you anymore and just walk away I mean eventually if Heather keeps taking things people are going to become suspicious of her and sooner or later Heather will be caught when that happens her parents will be called in certainly she'll have to pay for or return everything that she took she may even get suspended from school that could be very embarrassing for Heather for her parents and maybe even for Kathy why for Kathy because Kathy knew first perhaps it was something else that could have been done besides just turning around and walking away if you were Kathy what would you say to your friend thank you [Music] so I hope you uh enjoyed my our impromptu films about thieves uh yeah um this is all uh uh pre-recorded of course because we were traveling and um I've pre-recorded a series of shows so uh what I'll try to do is kind of do like I did when I was at emea is maybe try to do uh some live inserts of where I am because it is all film and AV Geeks related related and um yeah
