I'm so robust and I just crapped out so I'm gonna go ahead and rewind Facebook [Music] now it's online for somebody so that was really weird everybody YouTube just kind of crapped out and then I tried to get Facebook online so a lot hilarity you know technology [Music] all right let's try this again the why of army missiles an apple sir the trading people natural laws can guide man statement and thus we learned that motion involves more than just the motion motion involves reaction force and speed a whole new physical cream laws that men and missiles must he [Music] Sir Isaac Newton found that things stay where they are unless something makes the move speed and direction depend upon an object's weight the force exerted and Anglet which apply oh yes he also found that to every action there is an equal and opposite reaction action reaction it's not fire in hot gases shooting out the open end that makes a rocket move its high-pressure gases pushing against the closed end of the rocket action-reaction high-pressure gases are a product of burning within a rocket motor two things are required to support the burning fuel and oxidizer both are carried in separate tanks in a powered radar can be used like a searchlight [Music] and the missile can be sent along to home or steer itself using radar signals bounced off the target that's how the Army's Hawk air defense guided missile works Hawk was specially designed to handle low-flying high speed airplanes [Music] the Army's shoulder-fired redeye also is a homing air defense missile but this frontline weapon has a seeker in its nose that steers the missile on airing Li to the heat of the engine of the target aircraft the army even sends missiles by wire its new tow missile now in development gets its steering commands through hair thin wires trailing behind it the gunner sites on the target and a tiny computer automatically directs the missile to his aiming point land combat is the soldiers job it's rugged and complicated and no one weapon can do everything that's why the army needs many missiles they give the American soldier better firepower a means to fight and defeat any enemy what really counts is an effective combination of both man and missiles to hit targets on the ground far beyond the reach of guns the army needs long-range ballistic missiles like the sergeant upfront at close range the soldier needs a quick punch like the m-72 rocket grenade light enough to carry on his back and big enough to do the job lightweight weapons are important - especially on helicopters are only a limited number of pounds can be lifted a simple well-aimed rocket is extremely effective as Army aviators proved in Vietnam against a heavily armed and armored target the rule is to destroy him before he destroys you the requirement hit at long range and hit hard on the very first try the army's shillelagh guided missile has the accuracy and the punch to fill the need and when developing an effective way to destroy attacking missiles intercontinental ballistic missiles traveling at the rate of 3 miles each second the army needs speed speed like this in the Zeus missile plan to race great distances and intercept and kill attacking missiles or speed like this in the even faster sprint designed for short-range missile hit ourselves the army has special requirements for its soldiers and its missiles army missiles must go with the soldier and fight where he fights that could be an end climate anyplace in the world there are places where it gets well below zero every day or where the temperature gets well above 100 degrees in the daytime and places in the world where it rains constantly and mold forms overnight on metal parts a mobile modern army needs missiles that can move depending upon the mission they travel on tracks or on backs over land or over water and when natural obstacles intervene army missiles come by helicopter under them in them or on them army missiles can ride transport aircraft for a quick long jump to battle zones anywhere in the world and get into the fight if they must with one last step straight down [Music] and once in the fight army missiles can throw a variety of punches this Lance ballistic missile for example delivers a nuclear non-nuclear or special-purpose warhead depending upon the soldiers needs a variety of missiles to do a variety of tough army jobs they are built by American industry but they have a common home address Redstone Arsenal Alabama here men and women of the United States Army Missile Command a major commodity command of the Army Materiel Command managed the worldwide effort by a government industry team required to develop and build missiles to meet the soldiers needs get them to him and make sure they stay ready to go if needed and here at Redstone at industrial plants at test ranges and other government installations all across the United States a continuing search has but one objective a good weapon in the soldiers hands today a better one on the way it's a long jump from today into the future and it requires contributions from all the sciences more efficient rocket fuels low cost high accuracy guidance systems better metal alloys for missile structures and a hard look at the shape of things to come the essential ingredients are skill ingenuity and dedication the army calls it the missile business a business with a single customer the American soldier without him the world's best missiles are brainless pieces of metal with him they share a vital part in the defense of film is friction [Music] coming up friction [Music] when Jane and Bobby go for a ride on their sled it's usually little Bobby who does the writing well big sister Jane does the pulling but Jane doesn't mind runners are smooth sled glides easily over the hard well pack snow hmm well it did glide easily until it reach this bare spot where there isn't any snow have you ever wondered why it is so much easier to pull a sled on snow or ice than it is to drag it over a bare sidewalk or dry ground a simple experiment will help to show us the reason ruff a piece of cotton over a mirror it slides easily on the smooth surface doesn't it now rub it over a rough piece of wood the splinters and bumps on the wood catch on the cotton and hold it back it doesn't slide so easily on a rough surface doesn't if you look closely you'll see that the ground is pretty rough too and full of little bumps which hold back the sled and make it hard to pull we say there is a great deal of friction between the ground and the runners up a sled whenever two objects rub together there is always a certain amount of friction which tends to keep the objects from moving through living objects the less friction there is do you think there is much friction in the snow and the sled runners friction because it keeps things from sliding easily makes them wear out for instance the rough surface of the sidewalk rubs against the bottom of your shoes and tears off tiny pieces of leather that is why the soles and heels of your shoes wear out because of friction automobile tires wear off because of friction between the road and the rubber tires knives and scissors become dull Ansel made sharpening machines wear out all because of friction we cannot do away with friction entirely but can you think of ways to reduce it one way of course is to make the parts that rub against each other as smooth as possible the moving parts of machinery are made very very smooth in order to reduce friction [Music] and have you ever heard people talking about 17 jeweled watches the jewels help to reduce friction you cannot see them by looking at the outside of the watch they are inside at the points where pride rub together jewels such as rubies and sapphires are harder than steel and can be polished to a very fine smoothness watch as having a large number of jewels in them usually lasts longer than watches made entirely of metal yes smoothness helps a great deal but in most regimes ordinary smoothness does not reduce friction a lot here is a piece of metal that looks and feels very smooth but if we could examine it under a microscope we would see that the smooth surfaces actually covered with thousands of tiny bumps and holes if two pieces of metal like this slide rapidly against each other Norm's tiny bumps still cause some friction how can we reduce the friction even more by putting grease or oil between the two moving parts we can fill up all the little holes now the moving parts are actually sliding on a thin smooth layer of oil instead of rubbing against each other without oil Norma Shearer could last very long because friction would wear it out automobiles must be greased and oiled regularly sewing machines must be oiled and your bicycles and rollerskates will run more smoothly and will last longer if you all them regularly have you ever tried to move a barrel if you have you know that it is much easier to roll it than it is to slide it and so another way of reducing friction is to change sliding friction to rolling friction of course that's easy if the object is around like a barrel but suppose the object is square like a box how can we use rolling friction here that's right by putting rollers under it and we can make our work still easier if we change the rollers the wheel the wheel has been called man's most important invention without wheels to reduce friction modern land transportation would be impossible [Music] - Bank wheels roll more easily we use ball bearings to reduce the friction between the wheel of the axle you have seen that by reducing friction we can make things last longer and we can make our work easier but you should also know that friction is very useful to have you ever tried to turn a doorknob with wet soapy hands the soap and water reduce the friction between your hand on the knob now you need more friction to put the knob hard enough to turn it and so you'll dry your hands in order to increase the friction we increase friction in many other ways - bottle caps are usually made with ridges on them to keep your fingers from slipping the ridges increase the friction between your fingers on the cap automobile tires have rough treads on them to increase the friction between the road and the tires so they're up skid we use friction as a brake to stop moving objects all brakes work by increasing friction and we use friction and walking without friction you couldn't walk because your shoes would not grip the like to buy have you ever picked out something you wanted then pay for it yourself do you like to make your own decisions how do you make decisions if you drive to a shopping center you may have your car serviced while you're shopping have you ever thought about the person who services a car is he a Salesman does he sell anything what does he sell would you like to work in a service station what would you have to know to be a successful service station attendant [Music] Donna and Bryan are going to the shopping mall they've won a contest the prize is a choice of anything sold in any store in the mall [Music] the manager is telling the winners to take their time and select something they really like there are many stores to choose from each has a different product cell what do you think you would you [Music] Donna and Bryan think they may want bicycles would you choose a bicycle [Music] does the saleslady need to know much about bicycles to sell them [Music] oh why choose a bicycle when you can get a motorbike wait a minute what is she saying Ryan is too young to ride a motorbike oh well there are plenty of other stores to visit [Music] girls like jewelry Donna thinks you might like a diamond ring you choose a diamond ring as a jewelry salesman need any special knowledge how is the jewelry salesman's job the same as the service station attendants and the bicycle salesman [Music] maybe we need to look a little longer to find just the right price [Music] shopping can wear out your feet and make you hungry ice cream is a great refresher what is your favorite flavor [Music] [Music] operating a cash register is a job also in some businesses there is a cashier who takes in all the money other businesses the sales personnel operates the cash register what would you need to know to be a good cashier how would arithmetic be helpful to a cashier would you like to be a cashier strolling along eating ice cream and looking in the store windows as always fun who makes the store windows so attractive we'll go in stores because of what is shown in the window window display men are in charge of decorating the windows of stores do you think you would like to make a store window attractive [Music] gosh there are lots of different stores reading card stores welding stores and drugstores where will Donna and Bryan find a prize [Music] everyone loves new shoes you think they'll want new shoes [Music] you want new shoes a shoe salesman should know a lot about feet [Music] what are you doing why do you think he's using this to it how important is it or shoes to fit well [Music] do you get to choose your own shoes what kind of shoes do you like do you think this salesman enjoys his work what makes you think so if you like shoes do you think you would enjoy selling shoes this salesman is also the manager of the shoe store as manager what other things does he need to know other than fitting shoes what a stock clerk we needed in this store what would a stock clerk do [Music] no this is not exactly what they want everyone seems so helpful salespeople try to make each customer happy if you like to talk you're going to enjoy being with people you might want to work in a store of some kind [Music] Brian is interested in stargazing he may want his own telescope so he can look at the night skies why does the saleslady keep the telescope in a case [Music] have you ever wanted a camera so you can take your own pictures cuz the saleslady need special training to sell cameras and photographic supplies what are some of the things she needs to know bill comes in many different sizes and speeds cameras come in different types with different settings needed to operate each type if the sales lady likes to take pictures would this help her and doing a job better [Music] a wig could be what Donna really wants is this sales lady's job something like a job in a beauty shop [Music] [Music] maybe Donna needs to wait a few years before she's ready for a wig the toy department is always fun to go shopping in wouldn't you like to sell toys [Music] [Music] salespeople even work in the movie theater and you name two sales jobs in a movie theater [Music] almost everyone likes to play some sport the equipment where most sports are found in a sporting goods store Brian likes to fish [Music] do you think the salesman likes to fish he knows so much about fishing [Music] Donna and Bryan think maybe they'd like a musical prize [Music] what the salesman need to know how to play a guitar to sell one well Brian choose the guitar [Music] maybe Donna will choose the longer [Music] some rock records [Music] this salesman is trying to interest them in a lawnmower they probably won't use a lot more would you stores stores stores and still Donna and Brian haven't found a price do you think they'll leave without a prize what store have they missed on their shopping trip [Music] can you tell what kind of store they're in now will they find their prize here but you have chosen the same prize is the pet store salesman pleased because he's made someone happy would you like to trade places with him [Music] yeah that was a time capsule that was really awesome there's others in this series I think one is who builds houses [Music] and yeah I don't know the year though I was gonna look it up and I think I found a reference but I didn't find it's like a machine with like no something will happen just way it is alright or maybe I'll show a bonus we did last year yeah I think I pulled out a bunch of like TV ads and just show those what is going on all kinds of fun moment mom you need to put your phone away you've had enough screen time all right went around the farm you call it it is December and the first winter snow has fallen during the night Joan and Jerry Johnson are starting out to explore the new white blanket of snow they leave their tracks everywhere they go they noticed that some small animal has left its tracks in the snow - what animal could have made these tracks they're still fresh they were made only a short time ago is the animal that made the track still nearby yes there it is a cottontail rabbit snuggled down in the snow Joan and Jerry have frightened way he goes Joan and Jerry must be on their way to they are on their way out to the woods to cut a Christmas tree first they must stop to get the things they will need or one thing and back and it's a good sharp axe and next a sled a sled to haul the tree home from the wood the snow is just right for his led John wants to pull so away from the farm yard and out near the woods where the snow is a little deeper now what does Jerry P race tracks in the snow again and here is the Fox that made the tracks the box may know that there's someone near his thick fur coat keeps him warm during the cold weathers keep quiet says Jerry but the Fox isn't sure it's safe here away he goes galloping farther and farther through the trees now Joan would like a ride it's only a short way to where the evergreen please grow they stopped at the edge of the woods because they see a young deer a fawn he's probably hungry in winter snow covers the grass the leaves are gone from trees and bushes it's harder for deer to find food and they often come up close to farmhouses the fawn watches Joan and Gerry closely he's a little bit afraid of people he'll feel safer back in the woods Jerry knows where there is a nice little Christmas tree Joan liked it very much Joan thinks Jerry is a good woodsman what a fine Christmas tree just the right size for the Johnson living room and just the right size for the sled Daria's brought along a rope to hold the tree on the sled now back through the pasture and onto the house with the tree for the happy Christmas holidays now it is January the snow is much deeper inside the house it is warm and cozy Joan watches Jerry as he shoveled the path out to the barn shoveling not always work for Jerry like Joan thinks the farm is very beautiful and reflective snow here comes father it's time for the morning chores in winter when snow covers the grass and the pasture the Johnston's feed their livestock in the barn this is the hey that Jerry and mr. Johnson cut we put in the barn last summer the horses stay inside the barn on cold winter days when they're not working another Fork of hay will fill the manger in another part of the barn father is feeding the milk cows during the winter the Johnsons keep the cows in the barn most of the time the cows give more milk if they are kept warm and get the right kind of feed [Music] whiskers the cat has found a comfortable place for a nap the feed father brings in the big shovel is called stylee last autumn he made the cyllage by cutting up green corn and putting it in the silo [Music] it's close to milking time and that's the time for whiskers breakfast at the house Joanie's taking breakfast to the birds this morning she put sunflower seeds and nut meats into a feeding box for the birds that stay on the farm on a tree nearby there is a basket made of string where she puts suet for the birds it's harder for them to find food when the ground is covered with snow while Joan is waiting for her birds chief DS the long icicles that hang from the edge of the roof here comes a bird now it's a chickadee chickadees stay on the Johnson farm all winters they seemed frisky and gay even in the cold weather but they really need help in finding food during the winter now it is a day late in February Jerry and Joan are coming home from school it's goodbye to schoolmates until tomorrow up the road toward the house and close by the old snowdrift this is the biggest snowdrift left along the road but now it's melting fast some of the water soaks into the ground it will water spring plants some of the water runs down the road to the river at the edge of the snowdrift the melting snow has uncovered a small green plant it has stayed alive under the snow all winters on the weight of the house Joan and Jerry start their evening chores their first job is to water the cows electricity runs the pump that pumps water for the milk cows [Applause] even in the winter the Johnson cows come out of the barn for fresh water back of the barn is a spot that John and Jerry are watching carefully these days so hole that leads to the den where the woodchuck has been sleeping all winter he's still sleeping but before long the woodchuck will come out where winter is almost gone and sunny spring days will soon be here again alright so that was 97 I got three more films decided to go off script a little bit mark remind me what we showed for the hundredth film last time which was Betty Boop and so I've decided to try to match it though these last three films so here we go so one of the great things about collecting 60mm in your films means that not only do I get educational films industrial films commercial TV shows I get a wide variety of other things as well I get home movies I get like science experiments I get just lots and lots and lots of great stuff and so here's an example of something I got though there's taping going on yeah I'm doing a quick and dirty splice which will probably bite me in the butt that's what it's all about with your filmstrip shaved tape dispenser yeah [Music] I'm not giving anything away well everybody sees it though oh right because we're not on camera right something I got rocky and bullwinkle bumpers June 4 I we lost she was a wonderful voice actress who worked a long time and did lots of voices so this is for her [Music] and now rocky watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat [Music] these poem is dedicated to babysitter's everywhere between the dark and the daylight when the night is beginning to lower comes a pause in the day's occupation the children this is a very useful silence but I know by their merry eyes that you're plotting and planning together to take me by surprise sudden read from the stairway a sudden rush from the hall by three doors left unguarded they enter my castle whoa you think Oh blue-eyed kiddies because you have scaled the wall that such an old moo-stache as i am is not a match for us so basically what happened was they were just like that either outs or bumpers that you would put before or after commercials and if you remember how many if you watched Rocky and Bullwinkle when it was in syndication you knew how many times they had these fillers of you know the lightning and the Thunder and all that stuff and all these little tiny bits that they just kept repeating over and over and over again and you'd have so little actual like content of you know advancing the story but it's still great my mom's here and she pointed out she's like that's one of your favorite perfume is there anything I was like yes yes it is I am and while we're so I didn't lie it is an actual filmstrip shaped tape dispenser yeah and I don't I don't use that for splicing film that's actually that's scotch tape and I I coerced the people at Anthology Film Archives to give this like I everyday I went in I was like that as an awesome tape dispenser that is an awesome table Spencer by the end of it by a week they were like just taking settle get off our backs shuttle so you have film strips shaped things send them to skip oh come on now have enough problems with actually the film's you don't need any more stuff all right I'm probably not allowed to show this don't tell Dino Everett because I think he's in charge of it but what the heck I sell this on HBO Backlund's before HBO was 24 hours they used to show short movies between films and this film work my brain I am intrigued in a wonderful way dear mr.
