so so that's not alabama i don't know what that is um let me uh get back and look at it the alabama hills huh yeah i don't know where that is um look it up everybody look it up um so i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show uh where we watch old 16 millimeter films and that film uh was from the mogul brothers collection which ultimately ended up at oregon archive in pittsburgh and then we scanned it for them so um anyways uh i hope everybody had a good weekend we set up the uh new let's see how do i do this do that nope do that it's so weird this webcam is so strange so behind me is the um blackmagic cintel film scanner and um the reason why i moved it here is because we're getting another scanner for doing other other types of work um also i i've been for a while i was uh digitizing while we were watching films but the quality wasn't it was ah it wasn't great so we're using this intel to capture higher quality uh scan and also hopefully that will translate to something that's better for you guys um fingers crossed all right so uh we're going to go ahead and start this with new glasses for susan and hopefully this will work we'll see what happens all right um let's it might take me a second to kind of transfer this over hold on i'm gonna keep the mic live until like all right we're seeing it okay sweet all right so here we go this should work fingers crossed is [Music] [Music] my um [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] my [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] oh [Applause] so [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] what kind of worked oh we got a tension issue hold on that's weird um let me start our next film here's how to make simple hand puppets or a nightmare fodder you decide so [Music] and i think i'll just take grandmother some flowers too these smell lovely who are you ah the name is wolf who are you red riding hood and it's nice to meet you mr wolf uh now if you'll excuse me oh uh yeah where are you going this fine morning to take this basket of food to my grandmother i really must hurry oh yeah yeah is she the uh nice little old lady who has hollyhocks in the front of her cottage yeah and i'm very late goodbye mr wolfe well i just happen to know a shortcut to that cottage was a hollyhock whatever do you suppose will happen next day what happens next is almost poetry uh miss hood may we hear your poem you need cloth old or new for the dress that we'll do a needle and thread a sock for the head cotton we found makes the head nice and round this red is quite good for the hood yarn for the hair scissors one pair a crayon or two some cardboard some glue a pencil a pam some scotch tape and then some strong rubber bands and of course your two hands our director will now tell you how thank you miss hood now begin with the head then snip off the rest of the sock about an inch below the stuffing now roll a piece of cardboard so it fits tightly over your first finger down to the second joint [Music] tape it together [Music] then push it into the cotton in the head like this and there's the neck this rubber band should be as close to the stuffing as possible and glue will take care of those loose ends now since red riding hood is a golden haired girl yellow yarn will do nicely for her hair first measure from the top of the head down just a bit longer than you think the finished hair should be try not to stretch the yarn when you do this then double this length you'll see why in a moment now using this measurement loop the yarn back and forth like this about 30 loops will be enough put this scotch tape a little off-center so you won't have to sew through it [Music] if you sew down the middle of the head like this it will look like a center part we made braids for our red riding hood perhaps you can think of a different hairstyle [Music] for her dress you will need about one quarter yard of some colorful material fold it first this way and then again since your thumb and second finger will be the arms your hand will be the pattern for the dress be sure you leave plenty of room for a seam down to your elbow [Music] snip out a very small corner here to make a hole for the neck make your seams as shown in this picture [Music] now put the neck inside the little hole in the top of the dress secure it with a thread and thank you that's much better but something seems to be missing patience miss hood by your face before you can wear start with a circle and then draw a line across the middle faces look more like children's faces when drawn below this middle line use your imagination and give her a nice face tie on her red hood and there she is oh thank you i do feel more like myself goodness you have made me late i'd better hurry goodbye [Music] this time i'll catch you before she gets to grandmother's house not while i'm here you won't and not while i'm here either and anyhow we want to know more about you oh interruptions interruptions yeah oh well that's show business well you're nothing but an old stuffed sock still we do need a wolf for our story so i guess we'll put you back together start by folding a piece of cardboard then measure your own hand from the thumb around the fingers like this [Music] now extend that top curve a little to make a longer nose [Music] and then cut so and you have a nice firm mouth for your villain with your left hand put this cardboard into the toe of an old dark-colored woolen sock be sure the heel of the sock is on the back of your hand push the toe in to make the inside of the mouth paper clips will hold the sock to the cardboard now slit open the sides of the mouth like this [Music] and sew along the edge of the cardboard as marked in this picture [Music] so [Music] you want this fuzzy side to show now with the cardboard back in place stuff his head with wadded up tissue paper sew or glue on big ears [Music] wicked eyes a black nose a red tongue and uh i had unfinished uh uh a business you know aren't you through i guess so have you seen grandmother she's right down there and gone all the pieces as usual [Music] now can i go please do now grandmother is almost exactly like red riding hood she's a grown-up so make her head a little bigger [Music] this grandmother has gray hair buttons for eyes a little red mouth a few lines in her face and instead of making braids pull the yarn back and pin it into a little bun [Music] put her little grandmother dress on and a little grandmother cat and now little grandmother how do you feel we're almost frisky after that but i have been here you know and my granddaughter is coming for a visit if you'll excuse me i'll just hurry along why grandmother what are you doing out here shouldn't you be home in bed oh i'm going right now thank you but i think he wants to see you oh thank you man [Music] you wanted to see me sir we should rehearse before the show would you call miss hood please miss hood or miss hood on stage please you called yes but as an actress you should come on from the wings the sides of the stage shall we try again well that's better but um you're a little girl aren't you oh yes certainly not more than um this tall you're very right and also that arm shows that's more like it now how do little girls walk well this one would probably skip and sing i think you're right again now you're on your way to your grandmother's house with this basket you're skipping through the woods you're happy let's try it remember you're singing [Music] you hear a bird you smell the flowers now you're getting the idea very good how how what i just want to know how i managed to be so sensational well just sit over there and i'll show you [Music] now here is your head see and here is one arm and this is the other arm these other two fingers just try to stay out of the way like this and when you feel the edge of the stage about here on your arm like this you stay a little girl if not you get taller or shorter or you may disappear altogether now you skip like this you wave at the bird so smell the flowers put down the basket pick a flower and if you will stand up a moment i'll demonstrate how you manage to sit in that chair see yes very interesting thank you now can we go through your scene with the woodcutter mr woodcutter on stage please [Music] uh did you say something about a scene with red riding hood did you mention my granddaughter she went to fetch my show i've been sick you know yes we all know are you feeling well enough to rehearse a bit oh my gosh i beg your pardon i mean i'll try if you wish me too yes well uh mr woodcutter would you mind pushing that bed onto the stage certainly be happy to [Music] then is that about where you want it yes just right thank you very much i think it should be here instead careful grandmother remember you've been sick why don't you just lie down for a moment i'll call mr wolf and then we can go through your scene oh yes blended idea oh very tired so sleepy [Music] now while she's quiet up mr wolf mr will oh there you are mr wolf oh me oh well i was there uh just checking to see if she was well let's get to work anyway can we have the door on stage please [Music] thank you we'll do the last act straight through now uh mr wolf you come on first please [Music] what a shortcut naturally i got here first i'll disguise my voice [Laughter] who's there uh just me i mean our grandmother little red riding hood we lift up the latch and open the door dear child [Music] that's a speedy little grandmother i only got a cat [Music] oh well red riding hood is probably more tender anyway i'll wait who's there it is i grandmother little red riding hood well lift up the latch and open the door dear child hello grandmother dear i brought you some cakes and custard oh how nice come closer dear child why grandmother what big eyes you have the better to see you with dear child and grandmother what big ears you have the better two i mean the better to hear you with my dear but grandmother what big teeth you have yeah the better to eat you with my dear aha closing the axe hey you medler this is none of your business it is now we can all do without you ah not in this story you can my wife always wanted a fur coat i'll make a sports cap from that dizzy shirt i'll make you into a bare skin rug i'll shake the stuffing out of you [Music] oh did i miss the fight the wonderful woodcutter has saved us from the wicked wolf oh it was nothing nothing at all one of these days i'll win this fight and we'll have a new ending for this old yarn [Music] foreign [Music] oh that sounded a lot like june 4a um did we see i'm gonna try to look in the credits and see um if we can find this let me pause it because yeah that sounded a lot like her i don't know if she was credited john sykes buena vista distribution hopefully that's not disney yeah doesn't say but man that is totally uh june 4a who you might know as uh rocky j squirrel from rocky and bullwinkle among hundreds of other voices um yeah pretty great okay i got another uh film set up on the telecini for you see i'm gonna see i used to do that but i have to do that now it's so weird no and i'm going the wrong way i'm going to have to learn how to get out of the way of the telescope out of the scanner anyways here we go this is trees and their importance enjoy when the first colonists settled in america over 300 years ago great forests such as this stretched in an almost unbroken expanse over much of the land except for prairies great plains and deserts from these forests the pioneers built homes and furniture wagons and fences since the early settler needed food and shelter he had no chips but to cut the trees and plow the soil many of those who came after exploited the forest resources using up or laying waste much of the natural growth fire which often followed this kind of logging practice destroyed the protective covering of humus on the ground rains eroded what was left of the topsoil and wasteland developed today the land and all living things suffer because of this negligence what kind of plant is a tree and why are trees so important to us to better understand their structure how they grow and the work they do we will change this picture of an oak into a drawing the roots not only anchor the plant in the ground but they also act as the trees water collecting mechanism in these time lapse photographs you can watch the growth of a root tip and the millions of root hairs behind the tip as they push through the soil the root hairs absorb water and minerals used for the tree's life and growth a tree never stops growing until it dies the stem or trunk of the tree acts like a pipeline in the sapwood layers under the bark xylem tissues carry water from the roots to the leaves under this microscope xylem tubes look like this phloem tissues which contain tubes with sieve like ends carry food materials dissolved in water downward from the leaves to the growing parts of the tree here magnified many times is phloem tissue in a cross section of the trunk or stem between bark and wood there is an actively growing area this appears as a ring of single cells called the cambium in this drawing you can see the cambium cells dividing and adding new xylem tissue which becomes wood and phloem tissue which later becomes bark watch how the action of the cambium increases the thickness or diameter of the stem yet the single ring of living cells remains the same width each yearly layer of wood in a stem is usually so distinct that by counting the layers or rings you can tell the approximate age of the tree by studying the width of rings scientists may estimate climatic conditions that existed in the past in wet seasons more growth takes place and the tree rings are wider than during dry seasons the only place we can actually witness growth in a tree is in the buds at the farthest tips of its stems in this time-lapse picture of a maple seedling can you see where the stem is growing it elongates only at the tip leaves act like factories and produce food for the tree with the help of sunlight the energy or power of the sun is used by the green chlorophyll in the leaf to combine carbon dioxide from the air with water from the soil this very complex chemical process results in sugars the tree's food oxygen is released into the air as a byproduct this complete process similar in all green plants is called photosynthesis most of the water that flows from the roots to the leaves is not used in photosynthesis it evaporates into the outer air through tiny openings in the underside of the leaf as seen in this cross-sectional drawing these are the same openings through which air containing carbon dioxide enters the leaf and oxygen is given off a maple leaf has about ten thousand openings to the square inch the leaves on just one large maple tree may release over 300 gallons of water on a summer's day without the oxygen released in the air by trees and other green plants animals could not live when water descends on trees as rain leaves break the impact of its cutting force forest soil acting as a natural reservoir collects the moisture and holds it like a sponge many living things could not exist without the shade moisture rich soil and protective shelter afforded by woodlands even a small tree lot supports a great variety of life there are two main types of trees one of these which is broad-leaved is represented by the hickory and the maple most broad-leaved or deciduous trees lose their leaves in autumn from trees such as these we obtain most of our hardwoods the other type of tree which is usually evergreen has narrow or needle shaped leaves most of these bear their seeds in cones and for that reason are called conifers conifers which are usually soft woods supply us with much of our timber although today we may not rely on trees in the same way as they did in colonial times the basic needs of shelter warmth and food are still present and there are many other uses [Music] modern science continues to develop more and more materials until today there are over 5 000 different products made from wood the film you are seeing is a cellulose product of wood it is estimated that our needs for timber may double in the next 50 years how shall we plan to meet such demands [Music] we have already begun by selecting trees for cutting and by reforesting harvested land when necessary through tree farming about 64 million acres of farmland in the united states have trees as their crop our national forest system too will help to ensure future timber supplies related to the new land conscience has come many new job opportunities for example these workers are collecting and classifying seeds from superior trees from these seeds will come faster growing forms that will be thicker taller and straighter under good forest management timber cutting and new forest growth are about in balance [Music] the beauty of trees inspires us and their usefulness is never ending with our rapidly growing population forests are becoming increasingly important for recreational use by the year 2000 we will have almost 70 percent more people how can we keep up with our recreational needs unless we add to such facilities as our national and state parks and our new wilderness systems we can be optimistic about some of the things we are doing but are we doing enough only constant awareness of the necessity for conservation by enough people will guarantee us the forests we need now and for generations to come [Music] all right so the one thing i haven't figured out yet is how to adjust the color um basically the scanner is doing uh kind of a very simple uh color adjustment um and it doesn't do it in real time you basically have to run a little bit of the film and kind of preview it but it doesn't really go in depth um like i can with uh the previous scanner now the thing is this is hooked up to some software that will allow me to do amazing work uh in post to get that color back but um it doesn't do it while it's in real time so i'm gonna start figuring that out uh have some ideas but yeah there you go um this is this will have us run a little long well no no let's do this um oh and uh thank you tim for the coffee uh coffee is one way to say thank you to av geeks for doing all the cabling and setting up all the ludicrous stuff that we have nope behind me behind me that's gonna take forever for me to learn how to do that um so uh another ways is to hit the thumbs up to say thank you uh say like subscribe and also you know tell your friends anyways this is about uh animals going on a rampage this is snookum bears on a rampage enjoy [Music] bears who live near a ranch and this is destined to be the first of two red letter days for them when opportunity intends to knock and how seldom the smartest people ever hear opportunity knocking the snookum bears are pretty smart when all hands have left the ranch in the morning they see their first opportunity and off they go to pay a call at the ranch house any snookum is the oldest and wisest he knows the ranch has valuable horses because he's heard the cowboys tell tall tales about winning races with one of them and he has a tall tale also and nobody doubts it not even his friend in fact davin has only a good word to say for eddie and he says it cows eddie doesn't that's different now the coast is clear and eddie leads the way to the bunk house [Music] he's been there many times and knows where everything interesting is to be found this isn't the first time they tried to taste the shaving lotion and there's a wonderful animal smell about that brush although they can't quite decide where the bristles grew in the first place they smell so nice here's something that really has taste appeal it looks so good that some way must be found to get at it and when the snookum brothers decide to do something depend upon it they'll find a way it's just a matter of getting it over to the edge of the dresser and then anything that looks so good tastes all right for a few mouthfuls and he has tasted cold cream he prefers the brush the gang's all here now and all very happy if we can believe tall tales [Music] hello somebody's coming whoever would have expected the ranch hands but it's later than they think and time for hard-working man and beast to rest up for another day it's very early morning when the snook and bears be stir themselves and much too early for cowboys to be awake unless of course the mischief makers decide otherwise eddie for instance he never can resist an opportunity to tease what blissful peace now a little tickle with the whiskers and that does it so eddie hides back to sleep and eddie grows bolder calls his pals and they don't need a second invitation which means that a sleeping man might just as well give up whereupon the snookum bears decide there is nothing to fear this is a chance to behave like kittens that wouldn't think of doing anything mischievous almost angelic enough to sprout wings [Music] a breakfast table soon puts the snookum bears back into character who can resist good food already and waiting there won't be much left by the time the cowboys get here but that doesn't bother eddie and his pals not a bit he isn't satisfied with what he has must get his nose right into the box and into trouble because he can't get rid of it and now he is in a fix can't see where he's going here's a real pal ready and willing to help but it is okay now now there will be trouble two heads are not better than one they're worse than one when impatience throws caution to the winds look out there it goes and here go the culprits as fast as their short legs can carry them and now opportunity begins to knock they discover the ranch bell eddie's education progresses and his pals learn something too now to experiment with the gadgets he not only discovers the headlight control but he leans on the horn button this discovery can be valuable meanwhile the ranch bell gets a workout and clangs away what with the horn and the auto and the ringing bell they've discovered how to make plenty of noise when evening comes again they seek new quarters where there's the sweet smell of hay and all is quiet except for a big cluck eddie decides to throw him out this is no place for a clock and no place for eddie apparently but he doesn't give up not until the idea dawns that he who turns away may live to fight another day ciao call brings them on the run and marks the end of another perfect day with every want satisfied to the full they settle down for what they think is going to be a quiet peaceful night nearby is thunderbolt and certain desperados have planned to get possession of that fleet-footed horse all is quiet and they're sure the coast is clear for a moment eddie sharp ears hear strange voices not friendly voices and eddie goes for help they having a suspicion of trouble now to get a sleepy cowboy awake but it's a tough cup and there's not much time any other time he'd wake up right away eddie had better think of something else his pal tries a heavy glass ashtray meanwhile eddie remembers that auto horn and the bright headlights his pal learned something too finally after all else fails [Music] now for some real action eddie throws a little light on the subject drop that horse's bridle and put up your hands so you are going to steal the fastest horse in the county and win a lot of purses eh well from now on you'll see all your races through the bars of a nice comfortable cell [Applause] [Music] and his pals have a grandstand seat for a grand slam battle with plenty of punch it's the end of a perfect day or almost the perfect part comes when their pal the cowboy tells them they are house guests from now on so that's how the snookum bears heard old man opportunity knocking and held onto him tight absolute chaos um yeah so that was castle film so it's more about footage of cute animals going nuts um it's not really a science film or uh but uh how do you pronounce it cody cody mundy cody that's what they are um and when i first ran across it i was like snuckle bear what is that but they're native to united states uh all right uh also i found out alabama hills the oldest mountain range uh is in california so somebody i think said that um and before i leave i had mentioned last week that i got a big envelope filled with letters from kids that watch me or have watched me in the past my show for homeschooling and so i've been showing drawings this one is probably from one of the youngest kids peter but let me tell you how great this is and how complex this is so peter basically looked at the screen the youtube screen or the facebook screen and so if you look at this this is actually you know what is being streamed so on the right you see av geeks uh support uh buy us coffee at and then he has like a little web thing that says tell the world you like av geeks um then to the bottom left is ravioli that i'm eating and you can see me i'm immediately next to that uh with my mouth really big and it looks like i'm kind of crazy and i kind of like that um and then i can't tell what the shirt is that i'm wearing i have to figure out which shirt that is um then to the right of me is the telecini the old telecini then to the right of that is the clown thanksgiving portrait and to the right of that is the club then below the club is katrina my wife and she's kind of peering in uh then above it you see there's av geeks banner uh then there's the neon i mean this is phenomenal i love this this is this is why i do what i do i love you guys and your comments but to somehow touch a younger person in a in a way not physically but um to where they they draw this i mean because that's what i did as a kid so this is like i feel like that's me uh however old peter is but um yeah i love it absolutely love it uh so i'm gonna i think i'm gonna record a show just for them and uh i don't know maybe i'll share it but probably not no that'll be just for them because it's some stuff that we've already shown before but uh really phenomenal so um thanks for tuning in today uh i hope you have a good rest of your monday and we'll be back again tomorrow tuesday we're gonna watch more films and i will hopefully try to figure out this uh film scanner uh color thing um we'll see i don't know maybe we won't maybe everything's gonna be purple and red um yeah uh everybody have a great rest of your day and we will talk to you soon bye you
