so so hello everybody i'm skip alzheimer and welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show where we avert our eyes from the headlines and just bury them deep in the uh recesses of the av geeks 16 millimeter 16 millimeter educational film archive um there i have a little bit of control of what i'm watching and what i'm reading uh and we just watched uh how how we get our silk which was um uh educational film and i i just wanna i'm gonna stop this but hold on um yeah the name of the uh company is edited pictures edited pictures that's great shot on film productions um so somebody said 1937 that seems kind of late for a silent film but uh this was probably shot silent on 35 and then they smooshed it down to 16 and um that's when they probably released it there was a lot of repurposing back in the day going from 35 to 16. and there weren't a whole lot of uh 16 millimeter sound projectors out in the world so they were aiming for as many projectors as they could find um and so that's probably why they released it as silent that's just cheaper which is cheaper that way anyways uh have lots of films to watch uh i did a count and uh where are we at 2700 films that's give or take there's some that weren't on the list and some that are on the list so i think we feel pretty confident that uh 2700 films we've watched uh and behind me i have a telecini set up and we're watching that means we can pull films directly off the shelf pull them out of the can and thread them up and then play them for you live and so some of these are getting their 21st century premiere and so film is prove it with a magnifying glass so enjoy [Music] no chris likes to prove things just as scientists do his new magnifying glass will help him because a magnifying glass everything looked bigger it can help us find out many things chris has been told that a shirt is made of small threads with his magnifying glass he proves this is true he can easily see the small threads that make up his shirt chris looks at the magnifying glass itself the piece of glass inside the metal frame is called a lens he notices that the lens curves chris moves his magnifying glass back and forth to find the place where he can see clearly this is called focusing chris explores the grass and finds a grasshopper he has read that grasshoppers have six legs is this true yes he can count the grasshopper's six legs three on each side of its body he discovers two long feelers on the grasshopper's head just below the feelers chris sees large dark spots they are the grasshopper's eyes chris sees a feather dropped by a bird he finds that the feather parts stick together through his magnifying glass he finds out why one side of each part is fuzzier than the other the fuzz hooks the parts together this rock chris has found crumbles easily what can he learn with his magnifying glass he discovers that the big rock is made of little pieces of rock chris looks at the bark of a tree the bark feels very rough with his magnifying glass chris discovers why the bark is bumpy in some places in other places it's cracked and broken there's a moth chris has been told that moths and grasshoppers are alike in some ways is this true chris finds that the moth like the grasshopper has two feelers on its head like the grasshopper the moth has large dark eyes below each feeler chris sees the newspaper being delivered what can his magnifying glass help him discover about a newspaper a picture in a newspaper looks like this but through his magnifying glass chris finds that it is really made of hundreds of tiny dots he discovers that where the dots are larger the picture looks darker but now it's time to wash for lunch chris rubs his hands together to make soap bubbles soap bubbles he's been told are made of air mixed with soapy water is this true chris can see right through the bubbles the bubbles are like tiny balloons filled with air the magnifying glass helps chris see the tiny ridges on the tips of his fingers he knows that these ridges make his fingerprints chris has heard that his fingerprints are different from everyone else's is this true with his magnifying glass chris may be able to find out for himself in his brother's room there are pictures of magnifying lenses this picture looks just like chris's magnifying glass the lens is curved out on both sides this is a picture of a microscope it has a tube with two lens at the top and one at the bottom a microscope is used to make very very small things look big enough to see this is a telescope it also has two lenses a telescope is used to look at things that are far away through it the moon and the stars look bigger a curved lens like the one in chris's magnifying glass may be used in many ways to make things look bigger while chris is having his lunch he sees something interesting his own glass of water makes the letters on the box look bigger the curved glass filled with water acts as a magnifying lens by using a magnifying glass you can discover a whole new world around you with it you too can prove things for yourself [Music] so that's the type of educational film that uh gets parodied a lot when you see uh someone creating an educational film it's it's totally that it's got that that bouncy music and it's got you know that that whole thing with the narrator and not every educational film that we've shown follows that that pattern but that seems to be the one that people love to mimic um that's what i've discovered but uh yeah i i love that because i mean magnifying glass is pretty awesome and as a kid i used to would just sit there and just look at every little thing then i got a microscope and it was really really quite awesome speaking of awesome let's learn about spiders spiders [Music] this is a common marbled spider which has captured a small beetle and is wrapping it in silk to keep it from getting away spiders are important in helping to keep a balance in nature here a golden garden spider captures a praying mantis the spider's bite can poison insects but few spiders are dangerous to man in the united states only the black widow spider is considered dangerous and even its bite is seldom if ever fatal spiders are different from insects in a number of ways spiders have four pairs of legs while insects have three pairs the spider's body is divided into two parts while an insect's body is divided into three parts where insects have antenna or feelers spiders have two palps form something like the spider's legs spiders use their palps for holding in front of the spider's mouth are two parts ending in claws with which it seizes its prey and can inject poison at will spiders usually have eight eyes arranged in several rows all spiders can spin silk and use this remarkable gift in many ways unlike the larva of insects which spin from their mouths spiders have a set of tiny spinnerets in the back underside of their bodies the spider can produce different kinds of silk for different uses the spider's web is a strong and dangerous trap for catching prey different kinds of spiders build different types of webs watch a common garden spider as she works although no two webs are exactly alike there's a general procedure which we can describe first the garden spider makes a strong foundation for her web she usually strengthens the foundation with short lines across the corners next she drops a line across the center of the space she has prepared working from this she runs a series of lines much like the spokes of a wheel next she goes to the center and spins threads to strengthen the hub of her web from the center she spins out a temporary thread to hold the spokes in place she now fills in the web with closely placed sticky threads cutting away the temporary thread in addition many spiders build zigzag structures which strengthen their webs let's watch a garden spider as she spins the sticky threads with her back legs she pulls them tight and fastens them into place these sticky threads are the working part of her trap and they're covered with droplets that will entangle insects the spider's legs are covered with an oil that keeps them from sticking in the web at the center of the web the garden spider weaves a lacework of silk where she sits head down and waits for a victim [Music] with a large opponent like this grasshopper the spider can stand at a safe distance and throw her silk spiders which snare their prey in webs seldom use their poison except in self-defense the spider may store a big catch for several days when there's too much to eat all at once incidentally this spider's body is about an inch and an eighth in length she eats by sucking the insects body juices male spiders are smaller than the female and approach with caution since spiders may eat other spiders but if the female makes no move to drive the male away it's safe for him to approach after mating the female garden spider is ready to lay her eggs first she begins to weave a silken sack it's carefully hidden under a leaf or in some other protected place slowly she builds up a shell which looks very much like an inverted egg cup she fastens her eggs into this cup there are hundreds of eggs in this round mass then she covers the eggs with silken threads using her back legs to guide them in some of these unusual scenes you can actually see the silk coming out of the spinnerets spider's silk is finer than that of the silkworm and is used for the cross lines in telescopes and other precision instruments it's too fine for most cloth and besides spiders are hard to raise commercially because they eat one another when the egg sac is completed it's securely anchored with cross threads and is left until the eggs are ready to hatch here's a view of the egg sac cut apart to show the eggs inside when the eggs are almost ready to unlike most insects baby spiders do not go through a larval stage but look much like tiny adults from birth although hundreds hatch from a single egg sac only a few will live to maturity several times as the spider grows it sheds its hard outer covering because this covering does not grow with it after this shedding or molting as it is called the empty outer shell is left behind sometimes hanging from a thread of silk it's not well known that most spiders don't spin webs at all many like this wolf spider don't even have a home and carry their egg sac wherever they go they find protection under stones in trees or by burrowing underground the wolf spider is a hunting spider and goes in search of prey instead of spinning a web to ensnare it this spider is about an inch long watch closely and you will see the spider spring with remarkable speed and poison her prey with her fangs the wolf spider's egg sac like that of the garden spider contains hundreds of tiny eggs which will hatch into baby spiders baby spiders do not eat during the first week of life but live on food remaining in their stomachs from the egg until they're able to take care of themselves they cling to the mother spider and ride about with her after about a week they will scatter to fend for themselves many will starve others will be eaten by birds and insects and only a few will survive a curious kind of hunting spider is the trapdoor spider she lives in an underground tunnel that's fitted with a hinged trap door the tunnel is lined with soft silk another example of ways these little animals use their silk glands the trapdoor too is made of silk and it's camouflaged with pieces of dirt the silk makes a strong hinge for the door prey captured by the trapdoor spider is taken inside the tunnel here the spider can eat in the safety of its den this spider's body is about an inch and three quarters long another unusual spider is the diving spider which can stay under water for long periods under water it breeds tiny air bubbles caught in its hair when its air supply is used up it must come to the surface for another supply often it waits on the surface for its prey [Music] the diving spider eats tiny fishes and other water animals by sucking the body juices spiders are among the world's most ancient inhabitants about 75 000 different kinds have been estimated to exist on earth some huge ones like this mexican tarantula big enough to eat a mouse some so tiny they're hard to see they're found in almost every part of the earth they have many unusual shapes and differ widely in coloring and marking and the ways they live many people have devoted a lifetime to the study of spiders and their habits so the next time you come upon a spider remember that it helps us by eating insects if you observe it closely you'll get better acquainted with the ways of these interesting creatures [Music] running with that theme inadvertently all of these uh but this is not involving tiny [Music] insects or arthropods or things like that this is us and the danger we can do to ourselves thanks to eating um this is how to save a choking victim enjoy so [Music] oh [Music] all right [Music] you almost lost a game threat and you have to be the worst volleyball player i've seen in my whole life and you have to be the biggest glutton i ever saw in mine you're going to pay for that does this coke mine yeah these legs are yours too hey i'm really yeah i'm going to right here are you all right what's the matter with him you look sick you really look awful are you okay pete what's wrong with him i think he's joking well do something don't you know what to do [Music] choking can cause death in just four minutes each year an estimated 4 000 americans die in this way death by choking is caused by asphyxiation as choking prevents breathing the breathing or respiratory system is made up of these parts the larynx or voice box which is connected by the trachea or windpipe which transports air to the lungs the epiglottis forms a lid to the larynx in swallowing during normal breathing the epiglottis is open during swallowing it closes to prevent food from going into the windpipe as the food passes down the esophagus to the stomach choking occurs when a piece of food candy or even a plastic object presses down on the epiglottis keeping it closed or gets under the upper glass it thus blocks the top of the windpipe so air cannot reach the lungs the piece of food acts like a cork in a bottle and air cannot reach the lungs or get out the victim cannot breathe and this prevents him from speaking thus the important clue to recognizing a choking attack is that the victim cannot speak or breathe dr henry j heimlich a leading specialist in esophagus surgery has devised a simple first aid procedure the heimlich maneuver which has proven successful in saving the lives of choking victims it's very important to be absolutely certain that the victim is choking on food and not suffering from a heart attack for example you can be sure that he is choking on food if you look for these three symptoms first the victim of food choking cannot speak you can check this symptom by asking him can you talk if the obstruction is complete he cannot breathe if the obstruction is not complete you may hear a wheezing sound a heart attack victim on the other hand can breathe and may speak or complain of pain the food choking victim cannot speak or breathe second he turns blue and third he collapses that is he falls unconscious due to the lack of oxygen the victim cannot speak but he should not panic and run away from people who could help he should use and people should recognize this simple hand gesture to communicate i am choking however you don't have to wait until all three symptoms appear before you use the maneuver that i'm going to teach you remain calm but act immediately as soon as you recognize the first or second symptom do not wait until the victim collapses do not use mouth-to-mouth resuscitation if you do so you will realize that your breath is blocked from entering the lungs do not give the victim water to drink because you cannot swallow and the water will remain in the back of the throat sometimes it's possible to reach into the throat with your fingers and remove an obstructing piece of food however you may push it deeper into the airway and you may waste valuable time remember you must be sure the victim is choking on food otherwise by using the maneuver unnecessarily you can cause injury would you please help me and take off your shirt if you will it's not necessary to remove the clothing when performing the maneuver on an actual choking victim but we're doing so in order to demonstrate the maneuver more clearly this is how you perform the maneuver stand behind the victim the rescuer places his arms around the victim's waist place your fist with the thumb side against the victim's abdomen slightly above the navel and below the rib cage grasp your fist with your other hand press into the victim's abdomen with a quick upward thrust repeat if necessary you see there's always a large amount of air in the lungs when you press here you push upward on the diaphragm which compresses this air and the object pops out of the mouth to this air pressure similar to a cork popping out of a champagne bottle if the victim is sitting in a chair perform the maneuver in the same way from behind the chair if the victim has collapsed or is too heavy to lift place him on his back with his face upward would you care to try this please neil has stride his thighs place one of your hands on top of the other and the heel of the bottom hand slightly above the navel and beneath the rib cage press into the abdomen with a quick upward thrust repeat that several times if necessary should the victim bring up food from his stomach turn him quickly on his side face down and wipe out his mouth so that he will not inhale food particles into his lungs whatever position is used immediately after the rescue the victim should be examined by a physician be careful not to place your hands too high your hands should always be below the rib cage do not punch do not squeeze or hug with your arms or you may break the victim's ribs or cause serious internal injuries press into the abdomen using only your hands in this manner to remember the proper technique think of these words the victim's life is in your hands if you are sure of the technique and want to practice it on another person so you know how to do it apply the maneuver carefully exactly as shown here and under trained supervision that's fine thank you there are precautionary measures that everyone can take to minimize the danger of choking on food these are cut your food into small pieces chew thoroughly particularly if you wear dentures on the other hand things that increase the possibility of choking on food are laughing and talking while eating consuming large amounts of alcohol and children who run around with food or candy in their mouths but when a person does choke the same techniques are used for men women and children children as young as nine months of age have been saved but of course you must use much less pressure on children than on adults whatever the age of the victim a strong rescuer should limit the amount of pressure he uses using reasonable restraint excuse me doctor what if i'm an older person say someone 75 80 years old what would he or she do if you two come up i'll show you the victim is best on his back if the yes please if the rescuer is an older person a slight woman or a child and the reason for this is that in this position the pressure applied depends on the weight of the rescuer rather than a strength a pregnant woman should not rehearse or practice the maneuver however it should be used to save her life if she's choking of course a person who chokes when he or she is alone can press his own fist into his abdomen or roll against the back of a chair or the edge of a sink the effect is the same as when a rescuer applies the pressure there is always air in the lungs and the quick thrust applied just below the diaphragm forces the diaphragm upward this movement compresses the air in the lungs and pops the piece of food from the windpipe like a cork [Music] oh i don't believe this is happening pete are you okay can you talk i know what to do [Music] oh that was really scary that was awful will you be all right yeah i'm okay now i think we still better get you to the doctor judy so [Music] that guy turned blue um and it features henry heimlich that guy um yeah pretty pretty awesome film um there's other films that i have that predate this that that basically you're hitting them on the back trying to get him to cough it up so this was pretty pretty good and i think that this is still holing up i could be wrong i haven't taken a first aid class a long time but uh since college but so cpr has changed uh cpr i think that it is i can't remember if it's just chest massages or if it's just the breathing yeah anyways um look that up you know it's it's helpful to know because you never know when somebody's gonna need some uh first aid um let's learn about some swedish life enjoy [Music] east from the united states lies the continent of europe only hours away in northern europe are the scandinavian countries of denmark finland norway and sweden over seven and one half million people live in sweden a country just a little larger than our state of california almost one million of these live in stockholm sweden's capital city stockholm is a beautiful modern city often called the venice of the north because it is built on many islands connected by bridges most people live in apartment buildings because they are economical to build and to heat in this cold country in this apartment lives the lindstrom family father mother daughter sigrid and son lars breakfast is much like ours there is milk for the children and coffee for their parents sigrid and lars ride their bicycles to school always following safety regulations education is free in sweden children enter elementary school at the age of seven after that they go to a secondary school and then maybe to the university their studies are much like ours although religion is included since most swedes are lutherans lunch is served without charge as part of the social service program for physical education the girls enjoy gymnastics the boys like soccer best they call it football and play it from childhood in the cities many women like mrs lindstrom used bicycles to do the family marketing most swedish people own bicycles and use them for daily transportation the busy streets and sidewalks in stockholm look much like any large city in the united states the consume is a store owned by a cooperative society these are important in sweden's economy mrs lindstrom buys her bakery goods here she also likes to buy from the outdoor market the swedes love flowers and buy them when they can't grow their own stockholm's beautiful flowers and parks are a feature of the city every place in sweden is very clean because the people are careful to keep it that way downtown stockholm is very interesting the grand hotel has a famous view of the harbor nearby is the palace where the king reigns as nominal head of sweden's constitutional monarchy the town hall is famous as an example of modern swedish architecture which contrasts with small shops bordering narrow streets in the older section of the city great modern hospitals provide the latest in medical practice while free dental care is offered all children this particular clinic was given to sweden by the american george eastman the children appreciate what is done for them here and they like the dentist too the swedish social services provide care for everyone from infancy through old age state and private nurseries give daycare to the children of working mothers many persons in sweden work in manufacturing industries some like these men build automobiles most industries are privately owned iron ore used in making steel comes from the far northern town of kiruna above the arctic circle where there is a huge mountain of rich ore deposits modern machinery skilled labor and hard work produce a great deal of war some of it from open pit mines [Music] additional ore comes from mines deep below the earth's surface electric trains using current from sweden's extensive hydroelectric power plants carry the ore to steel mills modern plants produce fine quality swedish steel famous the world over [Applause] the lumber industry is probably sweden's greatest source of wealth more than half of the land is covered with forests which are replanted as they're cut trees are always felled in the winter [Applause] when spring comes and the snow melts the logs are dumped into the water where they float through sweden's many waterways to the sawmills these same waterways are a tremendous source of hydroelectric power trained men work in the sawmills but much of the work is done by machinery many forest products are exported such as paper sweden's factories are important consumers these men making furniture are fine craftsmen the swedes make simple furniture and household articles into things of beauty they are known throughout the world for their modern furniture and architecture silver pewter and many other fine arts perhaps the best known swedish craft is beautiful handmade glassware a blob of melted sand and alkali is blown and shaped to become swedish beauty such as this finished goods are carried by trucks by government-owned railways or by ships sweden builds many ships they are often named after the ports they serve sweden grows most of her own food farms are small usually under 50 acres houses and farm buildings may be old perhaps more than 100 years old milk and milk products account for over half of the farm income water is one of the important crops because it feeds the cows and the few horses which help to cultivate the small fields when the hay is cut the whole family helps get it up on fences to dry other important crops are wheat rops a plant used to make shortening sugar beets and potatoes spinach is a widely grown food crop most swedish farms now use machinery and modern farming methods what do swedes do for fun in the winter they go skiing their love of the outdoors is second only to their love of home and family an important holiday is christmas the celebration starts december 13th with the old lucia tradition symbolizing the return of light at the end of the darkest part of the year hikes and picnics voting and swimming are family interests in the summer when the climate is made warm by the gulf stream and many lakes soccer is the most popular game for men corresponding in national interest with our football and baseball the swedes would rather play the game than watch it colorful national costumes are often worn for special holidays such as midsummer's eve which welcomes the beginning of summer in mid-june the people raise a maypole decorated with birch boughs in the town square and dances go on for hours [Music] and now let's join the lindstrom family for dinner it's a simple meal of meatballs potatoes and grated carrots the famous swedish smur ghost board or appetizers is saved for special occasions courtesy and fine table manners are taught from childhood dessert is often a fruit gelatin served with milk and after dinner sigrid looks at the comics this one is trolda like our nancy mr and mrs lindstrom do some work on the family budget he is an in gallery here you can see how their money goes high income taxes take a large percentage food is somewhat cheaper than in the united states but the other expenses are about the same lars goes to his room to study with his books and his food like teenagers everywhere and so we see that life is not so very different for our friends in stockholm in sweden just a few hours from our own united states [Music] wow so yeah george eastman um guy who started kodak um somebody discovered in the comments um that he was a big dental hygiene uh proponent which is why he built that um some other things so uh having just watched the entire series of mary tyler moore mary's uh landlord at the beginning of the series is phyllis lindstrom whose husband is named lars um so yeah so i guess that was a common name i don't know um and also to see uh nancy in swedish that was pretty awesome and the hair pulling the dance where they're pulling each other's hair um good times good times uh thanks everybody for tuning in today i wanted to say that last week um i got a letter from a bunch of kids who i guess are part of the same family that homeschool and they watch the show and they sent a variety of drawings and letters and stories and it made me insanely happy oh i should say thank you old radios for the coffee that was where i was going with this is could be that i'm going to be eating those films maybe it has happened but i have other drawings i've been scanning the letters today i'm going to write them back um i'm not a very good letter writer but i will do it because this was unexpected and glorious so i'll feature more illustrations uh throughout the week um thanks for tuning in it's very much appreciated i enjoy spending this time with
