so do so so so so so hello everybody i'm skip alzheimer and welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show where we show old 16 millimeter films and that was old that was uh down at the pond which was made in 1928 probably on 35 millimeter and then the reduction was down to 16 probably in the 30s and that was from the mogul brothers collection via the oregon archive um you guys crack me up excuse me looking in the comments and seeing all this talk about television tubes i was like what what's going on um anyways uh i should say right off the bat thank you kevin for uh coffee coffee is a wonderful way to reward or punish av geeks for showing you something that you liked or hated you can go to ko dash fi.com av geeks for that and as always you can always hit the like button the thumbs check it out and you should say it just like that all right uh so i'm a little full of beans because it's monday um but uh here's a film that we have set up on the telecity behind me um this is part of a series called the kingdom of could be you um even though it's distributed by encyclopedia britannica it was actually made by i think sutherland learning group and it was something that folks have been saying that this was sometimes shown on captain kangaroo so here it is the kingdom of could be you health enjoy some just catch a ride with us come along and we'll take you to tomorrow tomorrow in the kingdom could be you there's a farmer could be you there's a teacher could be you quarterback lumberjack could be you but your baker dressmaker could be you look at all the things people do look what could be you what you doing under the sea could be you could be me what are they doing over there look at all of these possibilities all the wonderful things to do so let's begin to see what's in the kingdom [Music] [Applause] a very important subject health staying well healthy strong some people help you do it can you guess who the most important health helper is it sure is a big question do we look inside how else are we gonna find the answer it looks like a hospital over there that's where sick people get healthy it's where i was born see the babies that's what i want to be you already were a baby no i mean a nurse that takes care of babies doesn't that doctor look like me all grown up we just had the chelsea just kind of crapped out oops that was weird that was a pretty great song though um maybe for next year um yeah the actual television it did it a little bit earlier and i'm not sure exactly was it static electricity or something crapping out i'll see if i can bring it back up um that was frustrating sorry about that in the meantime static electricity what is electric current [Music] [Applause] it i can't help in a car the source of electric current is the battery after the horn has been fixed and the battery is properly connected again it permits us to have light heat and power the starter motor is run by electric current from the battery we can also use house current to get light heat and power but house current is too dangerous to experiment with instead we'll use the battery we have connected some of the same things to the battery that are connected to it in the car headlights a horn and a starter motor we've also included this meter the meter indicates whether or not there is electric current in the circuit when the needle in this meter points straight up the meter reading is zero there is no current in this circuit now why isn't there the answer of course is here there is electric current only when the electricity has a complete circuit to flow through now the electricity has a complete circuit to flow through when the circuit is broken no electricity flows through it when there is an electric current the meter shows it by completing the proper circuit we can cause electricity to flow through the headlights or the horn or the starter motor but can we really see anything flowing through this circuit here is something that we can see flowing [Applause] and here is a meter that indicates when water is flowing through a pipe the meter reads zero when the flow of water is stopped what happens if we turn on another sprinkler too [Applause] now there is more water flowing through the pipe and the meter reading is higher if we turn on another sprinkler the reading is higher still when you turn something on in this circuit the meter shows a reading turn something else on too and the meter shows a higher reading this meter acts like the meter measuring the increasing flow of water [Applause] this is one piece of evidence to suggest that there is something flowing through these wires that acts in one way at least like water flowing through pipes if something is flowing in this circuit it must go out here and come back here or the other way around let's say for the sake of argument that it flows out through here along the wire through the meter making it give a reading through the closed switch through the headlights making them light and back along the wire to the battery in other words for the sake of argument we're saying that electricity flows out from this post of the battery and flows back in to this post if what we've said is true now the electricity is flowing out from here through this wire through the headlights through the switch through the meter making it shore reading and back to the bat yes the meter shows a reading but in the opposite direction the wires doesn't seem to make any difference to the headlights they light with the wires in either position but look what it does to the meter meter shows a reading when the wires are attached either way but the reading is in one direction when they're like this and in the other direction when they're like this there is a similarity between the way the water wheel acts and the way this meter acts which suggests that both are being acted upon by something that flows in the one case water in the other case electricity between this battery and these headlights there are several thousand feet of wire when the switch is closed the circuit will be complete let's assume that when the circuit is completed electricity will flow from the battery out through this wire through the headlights and back through this wire to the battery if this were true we might suppose that this meter would kick over before this one after all the electricity would have to go through all the wire before it gets to this meter let's try it and see no as far as the eye can see both meters kicked over at the same time what does that mean here is a loop of clear garden hose these meters will kick over when water flows through them when this pump is turned on it will pump colored water from this container out through the circuit of hose these two meters didn't kick over at the same time the water flowed through this one first and then through this one now the hose is full of water when we turn the pump on now water will move everywhere in the circuit at just about the same time and the meters kick over at the same time why do these meters kick over together we could explain it in the same way by assuming that whatever it is that's flowing in this circuit is already in the wires the battery would be acting in somewhat the same way as a pump the wires like pipes that are already full of something that can flow the stuff in the wires that can flow is called electric charge when something pushes electric charges and makes them flow then there is an electric current we'll look at another piece of evidence that goes to prove that the electric charges are already in the wire this meter will kick over when electric charges flow into it when electric charges reach the piece of gold foil in this gadget the foil will move away from its support that doesn't prove the electric charges were in the wire they could have come from the battery this is a plastic coat hanger and this is a silk scarf you've probably observed that rubbing things can sometimes cause electrical effects somehow the rubbed coat hanger is making electric charges move but the coat hanger doesn't touch the wire the electric charges must already be in the wire the coat hanger pushes electric charges into the meter and onto the foil leaf when the hanger is removed the electric charges flow back when something pushes charges and makes them flow you have an electric current don't think that electric charges are found only in such things as wires we believe today that electric charges are in all materials we believe that any material in the universe has electric charges in it and there's lots of evidence to back that up don't try this yourself unless you use a weak battery there is electric current in this circuit electric charges in human bodies are being pushed by the battery and made to flow causing an electric current i made this film and they're like you know what um people are falling asleep during it it's like hey why don't we put a horn periodically through the film so any kids that are falling asleep a little and wake up all right we're going to try to tell us any one more time hopefully there's not some weird short that i'm having to navigate all right we now join kingdom it could be you health now in progress the most important health helper is it sure is a big question do we look inside how else are we saw i sure did yeah oh i've always wanted to drive an ambulance wow fast you're an ambulance attendant helping people who were in an accident yeah that's awfully important if you think that's important look over here holy smokes that x-ray machine lets you see all the bones in someone's body it's like magic and look who's working that fantastic machine he looks like you papo and that dentist looks like me maybe a dentist is the most important health helper what are those guys doing over there the sign says therapy i think that means helping people in special ways i don't know what i mean but that sure does look like you over there carrying helping someone learn to walk again i like that isn't that you all grown up that yeah what am i doing you're making different kinds of sounds and what's that thing it looks like a hearing helper our hearing aid so that boy can hear better that's it neato helping people with their hearing that must be the most important kind of therapy oh really look over there i'm an eye doctor i help people say better and i'm a foot doctor it's your features nothing else matters that's what my mommy says wait a minute i don't think there is a most important health helper you don't know i think it's just important to be healthy and it's a good thing that lots of people help you stay that way ah don't be fooled you do have a most important health helper and have you guessed who it is wait a minute what's this what does it say see your most important health helper it's only a does that mean i'm the most important health helper when you wash your hands when you brush your teeth when you dress up for the weather when you get enough sleep [Music] i know it all the time i take good care of myself do you the kingdom [Music] so there are some good songs i don't know next next year um next do tapping tournament oh speaking of which um at the end of the show i will reveal the final four um everybody voted and there were some surprises um yeah so there you go uh let's learn about light enjoy [Music] playing blindman's buff is lots of fun jane's caught and now it's her turn to be blindfolded when her eyes are covered everything goes black jane sees nothing but as soon as she removes the handkerchief she can see again do you know what happens when jane covers her eyes she shuts off the light that all the things and children in the room send to her eyes when jane peaks she sees her friends again she can see some objects like this bulb because they give off their own light we call such objects luminous or light giving but the ball on the table next to jane is not luminous it gives no light by itself jane can see the ball only because the lamp shines on it we say that the ball reflects the light from the lamp turn off the lamp and we can't see the ball we see some objects because they reflect light remember the word reflect it means bounce off others like the lamp are luminous the sun is luminous it gives off the light which makes it possible for us to see things in the daytime the man sees the tree mainly because sunlight is reflected from it to his eyes but not only daylight comes from the sun moonlight comes from the sun too sunlight falls on the moon and some of it is reflected to the earth light travels very fast jane can see the light go off as soon as piggy turns off the switch and light travels in straight lines that's why peggy cannot see jane when she goes around the corner because light travels in straight lines we cannot see very far on our earth watch the ship disappear as it sails beyond the horizon the earth is round and light cannot curve with the earth nor can light pass through the earth but light can pass through some materials we see jane through the window because light can go through glass glass is transparent air is also transparent and so is clear shallow water transparent means that light passes through easily other materials like the lampshade and frosted glass let some light through they are translucent other materials again such as the ball this end table or the globe let no light pass through such materials are called opaque when jane covers peggy's eyes everything goes dark because the handkerchief is also opaque because jane's hand is opaque it stops the light from passing through it therefore it leaves a dark mark behind it on the wall which we call a shadow translucent objects throw lighter shadows but transparent glass casts hardly any shadow can you tell why watch piggy and jane in front of the mirror do you notice that jane can see peggy in the mirror but not herself and piggy can see jane but not herself let's find out why light which strikes a mirror acts very much like a ball thrown at a smooth floor when you throw a ball straight down it will bounce straight up into your hand but when you throw the ball at a slant it'll bounce away in the opposite direction observe the angle at which the ball strikes the floor it is called the angle of incidence and it is the same size as the angle at which the ball bounces away called the angle of reflection in this drawing several beams of light are pictured falling on the mirror at an angle they bounce back at an angle of the same size but in the opposite direction in science we say that the angle of incidence is always equal to the angle of reflection once again the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection can you now understand why piggy can see jane in the mirror but not herself but look what happens when a mirror isn't flat how long one face looks and how squashed the other try to find out why the mirror helped us get acquainted with reflection now let's try another kind of experiment did you ever notice how a pencil seems broken or bent when seen through water that's because light rays seem to bend when they pass from water through the air to our eyes a straw also looks bent in each instance the two materials water and air differ in a characteristic called density water is denser than air this drawing shows what happens when light passes from one transparent material into another of different density it bends we call this bending refraction light is also refracted are bent when passing through glass and that is very important many children and grown-ups depend upon refraction for the help their glasses give them glasses are lenses which bend the light that all objects send to the eyes those who cannot see well are helped by lenses specially made to correct poor eyesight thanks to refraction we can use lenses for many useful instruments such as magnifying lenses and microscopes which make small things look big and telescopes which make far away things seem close and photographic equipment like the camera which made this motion picture in this film you have learned several things about light how it travels why some objects are transparent why others are called translucent and others opaque you have seen how light is reflected and refracted and why these principles are so important can you use these new words and rules about light to explain how these girls see their images in this mirror and why you were able to see this motion picture on the screen [Music] so that occasional that was uh caused by a torn torn sprockets periodic torn sprockets so this is what i'm guessing happened um is that somebody ran this through a projector at some point and as it was going um the take-up reel would kind of pop and so it would like pull and tear that's what i think was happening and so that's why it was just periodic and not like consistently throughout so there you go geeking out a little bit um i hope that did not take away from your enjoyment of learning about light um so this film might get me in trouble i don't know we'll see what happens uh this is sebastian scatterbrain enjoy [Music] [Music] [Music] juicy [Music] it all happened at the edge of a forest in a little village where everyone lived peacefully under the protection of a very wise policeman mr owl that morning a beautiful summer morning the sun awakened everyone bright and early even the laziest [Music] why what is that tent doing here did it grow during the night is it a circus a staircase [Music] no of course not they're campers [Music] i [Music] [Music] foreign food [Music] i know him it's sebastian the scatterbrain [Music] the forest is on the other side of the bridge don't go sebastian you might get lost [Music] he's a coward a coward sebastian we'll see about that and here goes sebastian the scatterbrain right into the mysterious forest the home of bushy the hedgehog [Music] oh a princess [Music] shall we eat her no she's so beautiful [Music] so [Music] well are you bushy the hedgehog the king of the forest i am [Music] look out look out young man look out beware of the dragons beware of the dragon look out look down look [Music] look out look out [Music] [Applause] don't just stand there run away run for your life run away in the village everything is peaceful no one suspects what's happening in the forest [Music] everyone to the rescue everyone to the rescue [Music] forward forward [Music] if you don't come sebastian's a dead dog [Music] that was [Music] [Music] hey [Music] food [Music] mr owl the watchful policeman didn't even leave his branch no not again [Music] the sun goes down the village settles for the night sleep in peace everyone mr owl is watching over [Music] that film was awesome i was i have not seen that and that was so good i mean the potential was there i kind of knew like i'm sure this is going to be i'm sure this was very popular with kids uh because you know you have all these different animals and they're all interacting and it's but oh man that's it got so good uh and yes i think that uh sebastian was unfairly named scatterbrain he wasn't a scatterbrain he just had kind of a wonderlost where he would just you know he liked to explore and maybe did not think about his own personal safety so that was awesome um here is another film this is uh this is a fairy tale i'm not sure if it's uh get grims or uh um mother goose or anyways here's wolf in the seven kids enjoy fairy prince and princess animals that are people enchanted where can they be which is on their broomsticks way up high they sail over big bed wolves on each hill and dale in a fairy tale fly away to magic lands of fantasy sail to those enchanted lands across the sea there's a land that's far away where folks live happy ever after in a fairy tale from the brothers grim the tale of the wolf and the seven kids [Music] once upon a time at the edge of a meadow there stood a house made of stone in the house lived a mother goat and her seven kids the little goats or kids loved to spend their days playing in the meadow [Music] [Applause] [Music] if one was hurt mother goat would dry its tears and do everything a good mother does for her children for she loved them very much and they loved her they were happy living together in the meadow but in the woods nearby was a hungry wolf [Applause] oh i'll get you yet now the wolf felt hungrier than ever he hadn't eaten for days now kids you listen carefully while i'm out shopping you must not allow anyone to come into the house understand the wolf may come and try to pretend he's someone else but he has a hoarse voice and a brown pawn that's how you can tell it's the wolf be sure not to let him in we won't mother certain that the seven kids would remember her warnings mother goat [Music] what left i'll have seven tasty dinners [Applause] [Music] this is mother children i'm back i bout to give you a present the seven kids laughed they knew that forced voice belonged to the wolf well what are you laughing at come and open the door we won't you're out mother that isn't mother's voice at all you are the wolf [Music] [Music] well give me some medicine that will cure my horse voice and make it clear [Music] now [Music] [Laughter] [Music] open the door dear children it's mother i'm back i brought each of you a present mother yes [Music] it's quite safe to open the door now my dears the wolf has gone away oh his voice is clear but have no fear those downpours mean the wolf is here [Music] this time the wolf ran to a baker and made the poor man cover his paws with flour till they were white perfect this time with a clear voice and white paws those kids will surely think i'm mother goat [Music] open the door it's your mother kid i'm home from shopping and i brought a present for each one of you the kids were expecting another trick for the wolf we have to be certain you're really our mother so first show us your paws yes very good you remembered that the paws of the wolf were brown well here are mine as you see their white is milk good it's really muddy this time open the door for mother well honey open it come in [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] that's right hi you run and hide we'll play a little game of hide and seek before dinner [Music] peekaboo [Applause] [Music] one by one the wolf swallowed six kids he thought he had eaten them all but the seventh kid the youngest was hiding in the clock oh what shall i do you'll certainly get me next the wolf was full and fat all he wanted to do now was enjoy a nap soon afterward mother goat returned what a sight greeted her oh my what could have happened she searched for her children and called each by name none replied children mother's here now mother's here the youngest kid fearing another trick remained silent at first then peeking through the cabinet he could see his mother mother i'm in the clock [Music] oh my youngest my baby tell me what happened the wolf tricked us mother the youngest kid explained how the wolf had come in and eaten all the others mother called wept for her poor little ones then she went to look for the wolf [Applause] and there he was stretched out under a tree in the meadow sound asleep suddenly something began stirring and struggling inside his swollen stomach the kids they're still all right mother goat sent the youngest kid to get her scissors needle and thread [Music] then she carefully snipped an opening large enough for the other kids to escape [Music] how happy they were but now mother goat had a plan [Music] she told the kids to fetch some large stones quickly the stones were placed in the wolf's stomach then mother goat sewed the opening so carefully the sleeping wolf didn't wake up [Music] [Music] oh my how those goats could make you so thirsty i must have a drink of water oh the heaviest stones when the wolf reached the pond and bent over to drink the heavy stones pulled him forward and over [Applause] the goats returned to their home in the meadow they loved so well where they would live happily ever after [Music] so those grims fairy tales when you get eaten you're not really eating you're just like inside they you don't get chewed up you don't get shredded you just are in the belly hanging out um that's what we've learned today um that one was kind of nuts uh wow um and so today just again these were not um planned but a lot of jingles showed up today there were two in uh the kingdom of could be you there was one at the beginning of uh sebastian's scatter brain then there was one at the beginning of this uh this film um the wolf and the seven kids um so we did have final votes and for the toe tapping tournament 2022 and these are going to be i'll reveal them once i can find the window that has those things yeah oops that's not right one second nope that's not right either holy cow all right that's right okay here we go it was it was in some places it was very close so um uh the big guy little guy song from i am me and i want to be versus ducks ducks beat beat it out it was there was a couple people that that went for it but uh i think that the was a little too frantic the big guy little guy song choosing what to make versus education today everybody basically thought that education today was a good rap but it wasn't really a toe tapper whereas choosing what to make um haunted some of your dreams and nightmares um never say you can't until you try versus the world of work that one was back and forth um like back you know every vote i would get it would go one way or the other one way or the other but then it eventually came back um world of work uh took it uh and then finally of course snacking garbage in your gut completely dominated there were a couple of ac delco people but it was almost all garbage in your gut and some people feel like that's going to be the big winner because it is very catchy and uh because uh one of the people and found a footage festival does not like watching footage of kids eat so they felt like that would be an extra oomph so thank you so much for voting um katrina was going to be here but then uh it didn't quite work out but she will be uh in attendance when we actually uh compete with found footage festival uh which will be sometime next week and i'm i think we're recording it early in the week but it will actually premiere um maybe saturday i'm not sure i i have to confirm with them and it's kind of been up in the air but uh thank you so much for your votes and um i hope you guys had as much fun as we did putting it together and listening to it and watching it i very much appreciate your feedback and your comments and your coffee and it's great you know this is why we do it although i have said that if nobody watched i'd probably would continue to show the films i might not do it every day if that was the case but because you guys are there and chiming in it's it's great it's it's been really wonderful for us and we have watched a lot of films this is our 533rd no that's wrong 563rd episode that we've done since mid-march of uh 2020 and we have watched over 2700 films uh and we're finding new stuff all the time like i said i had not seen uh sebastian the scatter brain so i was very excited to see that and find out how great that was so thank you so much guys for tuning in today we'll be back again tomorrow everybody have a great
