so so so so sorry i hope i wasn't gone too long um yeah so that was an odd film i i feel like they just took clips from other things i yeah i don't know those uh those early mogul brothers films um i don't know if they actually compiled the films kind of like uh sometimes castle would or if somebody else did and they just kind of took like like oh we need cavemen footage oh we need this footage oh we need this footage we need ancient rome footage um you know because i can't imagine there's a big budget for these these shorts but i don't know anyways i'm skip alzheimer and welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show um yeah we watch old 16 millimeter films and that's what we just saw it was kind of crazy that was mogul brothers as via um uh via we're going archive i'm sorry i just spaced out a little bit all right anyway so behind me we still haven't figured that out yet so i do this behind me is blackmagic sintel film scanner this will allow me to do 2k scans while we are watching that stream live and i also figured out the um oops that's the wrong thing here i'm just talking to you and it's kind of crazy all right i figured out uh how to do color correction we can't do it on the the scanner because we're doing kind of a raw capture there and there's only very basic color correction controls there but i did figure out on obs there's this thing and we're going to geek out a little bit called lut apply lut and lut stands for lookout look up table and basically it's a way to map color and i figured out a way to do the color corrections in something else and kind of get it in the ballpark so it's not perfect but it definitely is not red so we're gonna start off we're gonna watch this film that i have nope this way uh set up library a place of discovery and then i'm gonna start it without the lut applied and i'm going to apply the lut and i think it's a little yellowish still but it's phenomenally better in my mind all right so here it is library a place of discovery enjoy [Music] okay [Music] oh my god [Music] [Music] all right said paul bunyan it's raining or won't work i'll fill the whole thing in so paul bunyan took his great shovel and he began to toss dirt into the river billy pilgrim looked nervous all right he shouted it's more than it's worth but i'll tell you half paul bunyan kept throwing to the river until he had thrown a thousand shovelfuls by this time billy pilgrim's face was flushed bright red and it began to twitch finally he shot a stop i'll pay at all so paul bunyan was paid what he was promised but the thousand shovelfuls are still there and today people call them the thousand islands did you like that it is a good story when my story was over many of the children wanted to take home books about paul bunyan but especially susan because she'd missed most of the story [Music] when she looked up paul bunyan however she was surprised to find not one but several paul bunyan books all by different authors mrs grandy there are eight different paul bunyan books here all by different authors how could this be well the paul bunyan stories are folk tales that were made up by some of the early pioneers as they moved west and they were told around the campfires and the stoves and logging cats and road gangs all over the country we don't know who really made them up but we do know that many different people did you'd better hurry though i think paul bunyan will be a popular choice today [Music] [Applause] [Music] so were all these people involved in the westward movement going to the same place no they were in class the next school day during social studies susan had something she wanted to share with the class ms tevin saturday at the library the story hour was about paul bunyan and i took this book out these stories were made up by early pioneers moving out towards the west and even though these are tall tales i think you can learn something about those men from these stories and i was wondering if i could do my project on paul bunyan in the lumbering room that'll be fine susan class who else would be interested in working with susan the class unit on the westward expansion had reached the point where students were developing special projects relating to it on their own susan's idea stimulated a general discussion on folklore and when it was over five other students had decided to join with her in preparing a presentation of some kind at their first meeting they debated a variety of approaches without agreement then susan had a thought to do a kind of tv show with puppets they all agreed that had great possibilities and before their meeting broke up they had decided susan and sharon would look at the story material and start working out a script ben and jimmy were going to tackle the problem of the stage and mark and jack were to look into the matter of the puppets jack have you ever made puppets before oh where should we start the library man what a brain wow just call me einstein i think i'll look around see what i can find well i think i'll take the car catalog first okay mark knows very well how to use the card catalog he knows that books in the library are listed alphabetically by title by author and by subject mark didn't know any names of books he might want or the authors so he just looked for the subject card puppets and he was surprised to see how many different books the library had on the subject one book sounded especially good so mark made a note of the call number this number shows where the book is on the shelves the letter on the second line stands for the name of the author it seemed to mark that the call number of a book on the shelf was very much like a house address on a street books on a similar subject were all grouped together as if they were in one neighborhood with a different group number for each subject for example five hundreds for natural science six hundreds for applied science technology seven hundreds for fine arts and recreation what mark was looking for this system or one not very different from it is used in libraries all over the country school libraries public libraries libraries and government and business organizations and mark could go into any one of them without being entirely strange jack seems to have stopped in another neighborhood wonder what he's found there jack seems to have been temporarily diverted he finds it hard to walk through a library with so many goodies without stopping to sample a few hello jack are you finding what you want boy this book is about space travel and everything that is a good one but mark and i are working on a puppet show about paul bunyan i'm supposed to be looking for something that would help us well i see that mark found the books on puppetry have you thought about how you want paul to look no that's something i need to find out and also how a logging camp would look why don't you look in the vertical file for some pictures under lumbering and i think if you look in the card catalog you might find that we have a film strip about paul bunyan that ought to help you get started gee thanks [Music] there was no doubt the vertical files held promise of being useful for pictures and pamphlets jack you might be interested in the transparencies too we have a collection of these maps and charts and things that you might use with the overhead projector hey yeah we could project one as a background and we could make something new of our own couldn't we yes lots of kids do the transparencies and overhead projectors are not the only features besides books to be found in the library in jack's school in the card catalog are to be found listings of charts records and magnetic tapes kits film strips films and much more all listed on cards with different color bands for there are many ways to bring you information and libraries can be centers for these different materials and the equipment to use them for example science trays contain materials the class or individual student may work with on magnetism air electricity and the like tapes may be found with expert talks or dramatic stories or music programs in jack's school the equipment centered in the library may be used right there or moved for use throughout the school [Music] fs for film strip [Music] hey look what i found a full strip of full bunion neat [Music] with his axe which is why he's a barn door paul could level force in a single day he and his woodsmen logged off the entire state of north dakota in a single month you know maybe we had a nestle without lumbering you wouldn't happen to have a book here on it would you no but there must be something in the encyclopedia we have a stack of old national geographics that might have something the librarian sharon's home has books in it that she and her family have loved reading some reference books like the encyclopedia she's using now some magazines and of course a dictionary here it is lumber lumbering was one of the earliest industries to be started in colonial america hey look at this picture of lumbering [Music] while the puppets were taking shape in sharon's house ben and jimmy were getting a good start on the stage with some help from some people they had never even met one evening susan went along to the library with her father the public library serves the entire community and susan's father and mother use it as much as she does miss grandi i wanted to make a map on paul bunyan showing where he went have you checked the atlases i looked in an atlas but the only thing i could find had too much stuff in it had cities and counties and all that well you should check some of the other atlases there are maps showing all sorts of different things look here a map showing population climate minerals rainfall there are lots of different kinds of information you can put on a map or maybe you could take a topographic map one showing the mountains and the flames in the rivers and you could make an outline of just the states that you want to show on it or let me see we have some historical maps that show the country back when people were first telling those stories about paul bunyan susan told me how my story hour had been indirectly responsible for her class project i was very pleased that sounds very interesting susan hello hello how are you today you know there are many stories and books about pioneer life that you might like to read yeah i would well let's see there's caddy woodlawn the little house on the prairie narcissa whitman i enjoyed children of the covered wagon oh yes that's a good one i'll see what's in fine did you find what you wanted [Music] mark thought some folk music would liven up their production and in the record collection in the school library he found several promising albums [Music] jack finds the library a delightful place full of treasures to enrich his life sometimes with learning sometimes just with fun and he is always ready to taste to sample to enjoy jack's interest in books is one he will never lose in high school and college and in his home life there will always be libraries for study and for pleasure for being indirectly responsible i was invited to attend the performance of the show gee i'm boys i wonder what's on tv don't wait another minute folks run write down your nearest favorite friendly roach exterminator and ask for buggeroni the roaches love it they'll keel right over folks but they'll buy happy turn off that blasted idiot box i'm trying to get these bills paid oh daddy you're such a sour puss maybe there's something on another channel tonight we take you to a logging camp in the minnesota woods where the greatest logger of them all is waiting to tell you about the time he made the thousand islands and here he is him and his big overgrown self paul bunyan howdy folks first i want you to meet some of the men who live with me in the woods hot biscuit slim johnny ink slinger cream puff fatty belly whiskers and babe my blue ox say hi to folks babe before our exciting story begins would like to present those singing x-winging sensationals like termites four five had me was a longer and not a crying bomb cause nobody got a longer yeah the feature story of their show wasn't even started when jack began talking about another idea he had see i got a great idea for a science project you know space travel we can make a rocket ship and send it into outer space gee that's gonna take a lot of work and you'll have to get a lot of information and material don't worry i've got a secret weapon i figured out a place where i can get everything i need the library yes the library a secret weapon for everybody [Applause] [Music] the library um i should say hold on what's going on here is this so weird all right sorry there's a tension issue all right i get it all right stop all right [Laughter] paul bunyan and his disco pants one two big fan of uh public libraries uh i as a child would spend a lot of time at the library uh that's where i took these summer um film workshops and learned to shoot my own film uh and really just it was wonderful going through the library checking out books i check out a bunch of books at a time really made a big difference i was in a rural rural part of north carolina in a mill town but the library was really good and it planted a lot of seeds so big fan of the library all right what do we got um [Music] wow and you saw the the lut right i applied the lut and it it took down the red and kind of boosted things it wasn't totally accurate but um different films fade at different rates and so it was i created the lut for another film and created a lot for each film was gonna be too hard to do um and actually do a show but let's get like i said it gets in the ballpark so i love it all right so um let's learn how to we talked about the library but let's let's talk about how to speed your reading enjoy speed to most of us real matter we pick up a book sit down and read the speed at which we read however depends largely upon how well we use our eyes most of us can increase our reading speed greatly if we learn to use our eyes correctly this is john doe he spends four hours every day in reading let's watch his eyes and see what happens notice how his eyes move little jerks back and forth here is another pair of eyes notice how smoothly they move but the reading they are watching a bicycle but in reading the eyes always move in quick jerks and this is why when your eyes look at a page of printing they automatically focus on some one point this letter e for example such a point becomes the point of sharpest focus as long as our focus on this point the rest of the page is more and more out of focus enough of the page is in focus however for all of us to recognize at least one word and many of us can recognize many words without moving the eyes how many words can you recognize at a single eye fixation that is without moving your eye look at this point of focus try not to move edges without moving your eyes from the e you should be able to recognize a complete word most of us can recognize several words at a single eye fixation the amount of printed matter you can recognize at a single eye fixation is your span of recognition now about eye movements assume that this circle represents your normal span of recognition and for simplicity consider only one line in selecting a point of focus select one that will utilize your full span of recognition if you select a point of focus in the first word of a line part of this of recognition will be lost so choose a point of focus that will utilize your full span of recognition with your eyes focused on this point read a natural phrase next move your eyes quickly to another point your eyes see nothing but a blur while they are moving move your eyes in a regular rhythm don't go back now try it again watch the eyes of a good reader as he reads these same sentences a careful study of rapid readers has shown that rapid readers also enjoy a more complete understanding than slow readers now let's review these factors of rapid reading first your eyes fix themselves on a point of focus approximately in the center of the largest group of words you can readily recognize without moving the eyes you will be able to read the entire group of words second move your eyes quickly in one motion to the next group of words the fewer the eye fixations per line the faster you will read after some practice you should be able to read the average line of print in not more than four or five fixations now let's repeat try making only one eye fixation for each group of words unfortunately all of us are not fast readers there are many types of slow readers who must correct serious faults before they can speed their reading slowest of all is the speller outer many of us were trained in childhood to spell out words and we still do it in reading this is what the speller outer sees this means many eye fixations train yourself to recognize groups of words at a single eye fixation closely related to the speller outer is the vocalizer some of us learn to read out loud and we still do it even though we do not say the word out loud more than half of us are vocalizers are you if you move your lips if you mumble if your throat vibrates when you read if you silently say each word to yourself you are a vocalizer vocalizing slows down your reading the eye and the mind are many times faster than the voice conclusion use only your eyes and your mind when you read don't vocalize don't say each word to yourself another slow reader is the back looker he moves his eyes too far ahead this is what he sees frequently he misses a word or sees it but does not get the meaning then he has to go back and pick it up in order to correct this difficulty learn to read rhythmically not this way but this way many people have developed good reading rhythm by reading to music [Music] i was in the other room and i heard it i heard the music i was like oh god i gotta go um so it's more than just 80 geeks archive is more than just this room this uh small what used to be our laundry room um but back in the day when this was a boarding house this used to be a bedroom um this house was added on too many times over the years uh so yeah the uh the eye movement thing was really great and the verbalizer all right uh let's take a ski lesson part one uh it's officially spring here but it's never too late to learn about uh skiing uh so this was done by on a different scanner not one of my scanners and so i think this is gonna have your your good friend the wow and flutter enjoy [Applause] if you are between 6 and 60 you certainly have an excellent chance to enjoy skiing the exhilarating winter activities ski schools and their expert instructors have developed teaching techniques that actually work wonders in turning out good skiers in extra short time the seal wheeler the world's champion woman scare one of north america's premier ski school directors and several other top professionals of the canadian ski instructors alliance are going to demonstrate some of the correct and easy methods of learning how to ski properly [Music] you need not be an expert to have fun on skis 95 of all good skiers are not really experts in fact we use ski specialists in our films only because they have the control and ability to illustrate the ski lessons they are licensed to teach remember very few of today's skiers learned as a child and we assure you the fun starts with the very first lesson we can't teach you by movies alone but we can show you enough to prove our point that skiing is for most everybody so do get out with the next snowfall and discover for yourself what you've been missing [Music] me [Music] skis are the right length for you if they reach from the ground to the rest of the upstretched arm all skis must have a built-in flexible arch this keeps the skis from making a friction seal with the snow skiers call this arch the camber which must be strong enough to support your weight ski poles are considered of right length if they reach from ground to armpit for downhill skiing the ski poles are rapidly becoming more useful and essential for new techniques be sure that they are strong but light in weight [Music] since ski poles are playing a bigger role in today's modern skiing gloves are rapidly replacing ski mitts mittens may be warmer but finger control is now of more importance next to your skis your ski boots are the most vital contribution to your comfort and skiing success the modern boat is just about two boots in one the outer shell is hard and forms an integral part of the ski the inner shell conforms to the foot instep and ankle and protects all with strength and support good ski boots are expensive but well worth their cost outside type aluminum shoe trees allow faster drying and provides lighter handier portability they also extend the life of the boots by preserving their proper shape next we come to the popular kinds of ski bindings which secure the boots to the skis nearly all types have adjustable spring steel heel clamps with some sort of safety device to release the toe clamps sideways in case of accident [Music] this binding is a unique rotor release type of safety device now we will put the boot on the ski temporarily and show you how it works any hard blow causes the front clamp to swivel sideways thus releasing and ejecting the foot and boot from the ski the rototype can release to either side of the foot another important item for skiing is the ski goggle this is a racing type with amber lenses for dull days [Music] dark or polaroid sunglasses will do for extra nice days lightweight plastic sunglasses with the side light shields give extra eye protection from reflected sun's rays [Music] today's ski waxing is an easy simple matter since all skis have a plastic base undercoating you rub on the skis a special kind of wax for cold and dry snow like the young lady is doing and for wet clinging snow you use a heavy paraffin wax like real is applied [Music] grasping the ski poles is simple enough but rather tricky at first so watch closely run the hand under and through the leather strap until it's around the rest then grasp both strap and pull in a full palm grip this method prevents loss of a pull if the grip is accidentally relaxed now real charrette is ready to take us on the practice slope the first thing to do is move around activate yourself in every way possible to get acquainted and accustomed to your new and strange gear side stepping around in circles makes a good practice maneuver only raise the front of the skis in this maneuver and your tail tips won't overlap and trip you learn to move your ski pole ahead of your stepping distance so [Music] now we are going to learn how to walk properly on skis first release your cable heel binding from its rear catch now you can raise your heels free from your skis start to walk exactly as you would without skates slowly at first you will notice your heels rise and fall but the skis slide along smoothly without raising from the snow the poles act in alternating fashion to the leg strides just as your arms swing in regular walking there's a forward push from the rear pole with each stride thus the pulls aid in propulsion and the maintenance of balance there is little or no difference between walking and running on skis the sliding action of the skis naturally causes the stride to lengthen but you can run farther on skis with less effort than you can on bare ground without skis [Music] there are three ways for traveling uphill on skis the best and most effective method for steep and short grades is the side step technique place both feet horizontal to the grade and side step upward the upper hill sides of your steel edges will bear your weight and keep your skis from slipping downward your constantly shifting weight is kept under control by the ski poles do not try to push or pull on your ski poles for lifting purposes sidestep climbing is wonderful practice for all skiers it promotes confidence in steep places strengthens all ski muscles and is the most useful way to pack and prepare a slope for general skiing [Music] ski master character believes that any ski work like this can also be fun when you become skillful at it another method for negotiating shortest sense in a direct manner is with the herringbone technique the ski tips are turned outward in v formation with tails close together the steeper the hill the wider the v must be made the poles are used entirely behind the body and outside of the skis the hands push from the pull supports as each stride upward makes a new half v mark the inner edge of the ski grips the snow from the force of the body weight jamming against it the herringbone is not a beginner's maneuver it calls for more advanced coordination but it's well worth learning for its speed and direct line travel so [Music] yeah that looked uh painful and tedious um [Laughter] uh the the uh wow and flutter of the soundtrack um didn't help it made it feel like you're like whoa uh so what's happening with that um is that so you have some scanners that are um what they do is they they're a continuous run we're geeking out again a traditional projector has reel coming in and then it has this intermittent movement and so you have this little loop which is called the latham loop and then you have this so it's being fed in and then you have this periodic claw pulling down in sync with a shutter so that you get this kind of motion and you get image image image and so the shutter comes down as it's moving so you don't see this kind of smear well scanners do it with led pulses uh and other things so they pulse and so you're getting image image image image and then it's going through over optical sound head and if you don't have the motor set right um then you'll get this it's a little bit faster a little bit slower a little bit faster a little bit slower based on the tension so for visuals it's not a problem but for audio it's a problem you have to have it consistent and so this scanner was a situation to where um it had that kind of and i think it was more pronounced that they did it at a high scan rate so that it was more pronounced the the tension um that it wasn't a problem with slower rates but um the new scanner that i'm getting that this one is the one behind me that'll take me forever uh the reason why this is in here is i'm getting a newer scanner uh and what they do is they actually take the optical sound track while they scan so they're taking a picture of the optical soundtrack and immediately converting it so that you don't get that um so there you go that's fun uh all right so speaking of the no this way nope i might have to write a little sticky put it next to the thing that says to show the sintel you need to do this and then do this um anyways i have another film set up uh i mentioned it is straight up spring let's see what kids do in the spring this is children in spring enjoy [Music] [Applause] [Music] this is the first day of spring jerry's teacher said so in school today [Music] but jerry and his friends look at the trees all around they can't see much difference between yesterday and today that's because seasons change slowly since just before christmas each day has been getting a little weird and each night a little shorter as the boys hurry home tom stops off at jerry's house with him jerry tells his mother he has something to show her it's a poster he made in school shows day and night exactly the same length when that happens it's the first day of spring usually it comes on march 21st or 22nd jerry and tom want to start a garden but mrs frank tells them it's still too early in this climate it's still cold in march the buds on the bushes are just beginning to get bigger jerry's sister jane still sees snow in a few places even though the crocus one of the first flowers of spring is already in bloom but it won't be very long now before there'll be many more signs of spring in a few weeks the buds on the trees and bushes begin to open into green leaves our special camera shows how leaves unfold from the buds in nature this takes several days jane and jerry find some fuzzy willows they look especially dainty when the sunlight shines through them like this we can watch the hepatica blossoms burst into bloom plants are alive and always moving they move so slowly that we can't see it without this special camera and here we see tulip leaves just beginning to push their way up through the ground [Music] here again our special camera shows us how the forsythia flowers open gradually now there are many signs of spring the birds have begun to come back too many of them in the climate where jerry and jane live flew southward for the winter and now they are returning in the spring some will fly farther north others will stay here all summer to build their nests lay eggs and catch their young the franks have many daffodils and tulips in their yard jane is watching her mother pick daffodils these plants grow from bulbs which stay in the soil all winter in spring as the soil becomes warm and wet the bulbs grow and bud and here the flowers are in bloom daffodils are among the first spring flowers here's another early spring flower the tulip tulips also grow from bulbs the tulips are especially lovely this year by early may many different flowers are blooming in the yard jane loves to pick pansies these pansies aren't able to live through the winter they were started in a greenhouse by a gardener and then were planted in the yard the violets are in bloom too they go very well with the panties jane wonders if she should add some dandelions to her bouquet they're a pretty yellow color even though they don't have a pleasant scent like so many flowers do but jane's mother doesn't seem to like the dandelions she's digging them out she says dandelions are weeds that crowd out the grass but jane still thinks they look pretty in her bouquet [Music] may is a good month for picnics and today is just right for one the sun is bright and the air warm the children can leave their jackets in the car [Music] by the end of may the earth is born and all the trees are covered with new leaves trees are very colorful and many have lovely blossoms up jerry and jane lead the way they're looking for a good picnic spot but jerry stops look at the light colored needles of the evergreen trees his father explains that these are new needles which grew this spring some of the old needles will drop off jane sees a good spot for the picnic right beside the stream in a little puddle near the bank they find a surprise some tiny tadpoles they'll grow into frogs later in the summer [Music] there are many wild flowers in the woods and fields these are wild geraniums this is pink lady slipper this is trillium and here's another kind of trillium this one is jack and the pulpit and this is a buttercup jerry has spotted something his father sees it too it's a yellow warbler beside its nest in the tree there are many newborn animals in the woods in spring here are some tiny robins begging for food the chipmunk is busy digging into the ground here's a family of tiny rabbits and there goes a family of striped skunks nearby there's a woodchuck he slept all winter until the weather turned warm after their picnic lunch jerry and jane go exploring through the woods [Music] by the stream they hear the frogs croaking jerry looks for them but they're too well hidden but he does see lots of fish swimming in the water see a duck in her babies that hatched from duck eggs there are so many things to see in the woods in the spring the time to go home comes much too soon for jerry and jane [Music] on their way home the family drives through the farm country mr frank tells jerry and jane to look into for safety mr frank pulls off the highway onto the shoulder beside the road spring is plowing time in this climate and that reminds jerry and jane that it's time to get their garden started the earth is just right for planting warm and not too wet [Music] these are young tomato plants mrs frank started them from seeds in the house while it was still too cold for them to grow out of doors jerry's planting corn seeds they'll have to be thinned out when they start to grow the children are planting carrot seeds too and they're going to put in some flowers [Music] mrs frank has brought some boxes of marigolds and agiratum from a gardener she shows jane how to handle them carefully so they won't be hurt while they're being put into the ground and here comes jerry with more plants these are petunias [Music] jane hopes the sun will shine and the rain will fall to help their flowers grow [Music] and sure enough the wind begins to blow a spring storm is coming thundershowers often come up quite suddenly in the spring jane is glad that they finished their garden just before the rain but soon the sun comes out again mr frank is pleased with the garden jerry and jane have planted this spring what a busy spring it has been all right hey thank you nathan festival also covets it so uh and if they lose they will recreate this in raleigh they will dress as clowns and they will serve us and eat thanksgiving dinner so um it's a high stakes game and uh i think we're gonna premiere it on saturday uh so i'll let you know i'm not gonna reveal what's going on um but i feel pretty good about this i don't want to jinx our jinx us but i'm excited to see the
