so so do so hello everybody i'm skip alzheimer and welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show live from the av geeks archive in raleigh north carolina i was away i was in south carolina and we were doing training sessions for the library at the university of south carolina in columbia um and we did a lot of work uh to learn how to digitize audio and visual materials uh audio tape videotape different formats humanic beta sp and good pal vhs [Music] there was kind of a comedy of errors in that one of the realtor reel audio decks crapped out while i was doing a demo on it and then there were other ones that we tried out and all of them failed so very frustrating as far as there was something i must have had a death touch on uh reel to reel audio uh the other day so uh anyways what we just what we do here on the av geeks show is we watch old 16 millimeter educational films and we just saw um canning cold pack method which many of you in the comments said no don't do that that's actually bad um and the reason it's bad is because it doesn't really kill the microorganisms that could potentially grow and could create poisons and make you very very very very very very sick so yes um do not do that but it's interesting because uh this was something that this is a lot of people didn't have refrigeration and they certainly didn't have a way to freeze food so coming up with ways to extend uh the link the longevity of the food that you grew in you know in this in the spring and summer and the fall so that it could last throughout the year that was important because you often have a surplus of food and most people weren't selling them to other people in uh you know like some sort of pressure cooker and heating them up and and sterilizing them and then processing the various vegetables and fruits and then canning them and then you know you you had food for the year um so it's pretty great compared to um freezing them or whatever um and my parents um at least my dad and stepmother still do it um so uh it seems like some people are having problems with youtube freaking out and i apologize i'm not really sure what's going on uh with that um but anyways we're gonna soldier forward somebody also asked in the comments about are we still voting on the toe tapping tournament and the answer is yes and at the end of the show i will uh play all the songs uh that are in this round in round three all right it seems like okay yeah uh it seems like if you're having problems with a stream just try to re reload turn it on and off again um anyways yes so at the end of this show we will play all the uh the eight songs and um we'll vote on them the last day to vote is on sunday and then on monday we will present the four uh final four and those will go up against a found footage festival and i believe i'm not sure if we're gonna show it on may 10th or that saturday we're still kind of working that out but um i feel pretty good about our choices uh but i we really need your votes um so all right uh while we're here we're watching some films here's an oldie a real old one um this is made by the i think the electrical research productions incorporated i can't it says at the beginning that the title is a little jumpy because the sprockets were bad but uh if it features our good old pal james brill the narrator and again it sounds like he is locked in a closet and he's got a microphone that's on the other end of a hallway but this is about moths enjoy destroy the foliage of shade trees and many shrubs in molting the skin split in front the caterpillar wiggles and wiggles finally pulling itself out of the old skin at the end of the first month the caterpillar has an odd costume though not a pretty one the mass of bristles helps to protect this creature from hungry birds several days later the caterpillar again molds each successive change reveals it in a different color and pattern the four white tufts of hair along the back have given it the name tessa moth the body is striped yellow and black other tufts of long black hairs help to give it a distinctive appearance the larva of the white marked kasak feeds almost continuously often stripping trees and shrubs of their leaves it eats the harder leaf veins as well as the softer parts now that the caterpillar is full grown it travels above until it finds a place suitable for building its cocoon usually a tree trunk however this caterpillar between two leaves is spinning silk threads about itself the silk coming from spinnerets near the mouth it weaves the hairs from its body into the cocoon which is grayish brown in appearance a marvelous piece of workmanship a striking example of the building skill of insects here the top part of the cocoon has been cut away to show the creature changing from a caterpillar to a pupa after a few days the pupil skin forms under that of the caterpillars when this has been done the caterpillar skin splits open in front the pupas slowly freeze itself notice that the pupa is short and stout whereas the caterpillar was long and slandered after a while the pupa skin hardens and takes a definite shape it also darkens in color two or three weeks later the cocoon begins to show activity then a head appears at the top of the silicon chamber and after a while the entire body comes forth the cocoon from which she emerged here she awaits her mate another cocoon is breaking open we know that this is a male tessek moth because it has well-developed wings the male rests near the cocoon for about an hour then his wings will have developed and become strong enough to carry him wherever he wishes to go the male is grayish brown in color he has feathery projections on the outer margin of the wings he is not a beautiful moth even though the caterpillar is considered a beautiful creature by some people on his head are two large feathery antennae it is extremely probable that through these even at long distances the male sent his mate who still remains near her cocoon at any rate the male in some way finds his wingless mate the female lays about 400 eggs on the cocoon beginning at the bottom she covers them with a frothy substance which helps to protect them from the winter weather having completed the important functions of her life the female dies even though many moth caterpillars damage plants clothing and furniture others supplies with silk and many moths aid in the cross-fertilization of flowers tech problems man all right let's try that again so there's always been this mystery for me um where uh i saw in some films the name w e irpey where is it dry the pony all right so here you can see electrical research products incorporated e-r-p-i that's erp um and i don't know what's going on with youtube today i'm sorry i i don't know what's up but i'm just gonna continue and then maybe at some point you can go back and figure out um what's going on uh so anyways electrical research products incorporated erp and so yes and somebody pointed out they figured it out w e stands for western electric western electric had developed a type of sound a system for film and so this was their way of um i don't know why though they call it w-e-irp why they're trying to make it like it's a person but it's not it's erp was electrical research products incorporated anyways that was a long diversion but it was a mystery because i was like is there be a person i don't know anyways um let's learn about how neighborhoods are different and this is encyclopedia britannica who bought a lot of the educational films that irby made and brought james brill over for the early encyclopedia britannica films so here we go enjoy [Music] a neighborhood is a place where people live and play where they work and shop and go to school neighborhoods can be in different kinds of places from large cities to suburbs to small towns and quiet countryside can you tell us about your neighborhood maria can you tell us about where you live sure i live in a big city with my mom dad mr gunther is our next door neighbor we're friends we help each other sometimes bye mom i'm lucky because one of my best friends ever lives in the same building as me sarah and i usually walk to school together most of the buildings in our neighborhood are apartments each building has people from different families living in it we have stores in the neighborhood that we depend on for many things most stores near us are small and they're not open yet because it's so early sometimes i buy food here many people go to work at this time of day by bus or car or even on foot it's rush hour now the city streets are crowded so you have to be careful that's my dad he's going to work now too his home is in a completely different kind of neighborhood with more houses than apartments and not many stores nearby he walks to the station and then he takes a train to his job he works in a factory making parts for farm machinery i don't know if you could say the factories in the neighborhood exactly there are no homes in that area it's interesting but it's not a great place for kids now school is a good place for children especially when you get there on time our school is very large over 800 students from kindergarten to sixth grade after school and on weekends we can play i like living in the city neighborhood sometimes it's crowded but i don't mind i'm close to my friends and stores in school it can be exciting and fun [Music] here's a boy who lives in another kind of place keith can you tell us about your neighborhood my neighborhood is part of a suburb suburbs are communities close to a city almost every family here has its own job that has to be done my dad helps we moved to this neighborhood a few years ago we learned to be away from the crowds and heavy traffic of the city this neighborhood is quiet except for my sisters and me but we also wanted to be close to the city because my dad works there he needs to work very early in the morning his office is far away in the center of the city many adults who live in the suburbs actually work in the city so they drive or take a train dad must drive during rush hour when the streets are jam-packed with cars you know what one time lucille and letitia and i had a day off from school so mom took a day off from her job and we all drove down to where dad works we got to see his office which is high up in the skyscraper the center of the city is full of big buildings you can really see the city well from dad's office window some people live here right in the middle of all these buildings i wonder where they play a good school going to school is easy for me unless the weather is bad i usually ride my bike with my friend greg we like to ride bikes so we can explore after school that's the town hospital my mom works there many people depend on her doctors nurses people in our neighborhood even though the hospital isn't very far from our house my mom usually gets a ride to work with some other people because there is no bus another place we drive to is the shopping center we do most of our shopping there from groceries to toys my sisters and i like to go to the mall because many different stores are close together there with no cars around to worry about i like my neighborhood in the suburbs we're not too far from the city now let's go out in the country and find someone to tell us about that neighborhood [Music] my name's steve i'm tanya we live on a farm with our mom and dad maybe compared to the city this doesn't look like a neighborhood things are more spread out in the country our nearest neighbor lives about a quarter of a mile away from us but still we do call them our neighbors most people around here are farmers dad says everyone in our family is a farmer because we all have our chores steve and i help with the animals but to tell you the truth our parents do most of the work yeah mom takes care of the family and some farm business and she waters the plants around the house dad does most of the work in the fields and there's a lot of that work and he takes care of the machines and other things he depends on all of us and of course we depend on him the people in our neighborhood all depend on each other like when mr luke down the road hurt his arm we went over there to help him lay pipe he helps us when we need it one thing he can't help us with is going to school we ride the bus like most of the children who go to our school we're lucky because we're one of the last stops the driver makes in the morning other kids have to get up very early and ride the bus for a long time only the kids from town are close enough to walk like most farmers we drive into town to do our shopping we have shops here you can't find in a city feed stores and places to get your tractor fixed we may not have as many stores as people in our cities have but we can find what we need mom likes to go into town because she usually runs into friends and catches up on any news i love living in the country me too it's fun to walk around we see all sorts of things we get to see the plants grow and make vegetables and fruits when i crop it sometimes i look at a strawberry that we grew and i wonder who's going to eat that where do they live maybe it'll be someone far away in a completely different neighborhood maybe it will be keith in the suburb which is between the city and the country or maybe it will be maria who lives in the big city or maybe just maybe it will be you can you tell us about your neighborhood [Music] [Applause] [Music] all right so um it's an interesting film um and it certainly is different than probably the first edition uh in that it features a divorced family features people of color in different economic positions in different parts of the country uh urban and rural and suburb and um so i would say that some of the hubbub in um this is a soapbox type of thing so i'll be very brief uh some of the hubbub with education and what we're teaching our kids nowadays uh is uh they want um what's being taught to kids to be proscriptive or prescriptive in that they want to dictate this is what a family looks like this is what you know and what we just saw was descriptive like this is what families are this is how families are and uh so we have people who feel like no we should dictate that a family is a mother and a father and kids uh and descriptive is no a family can be people that are related to each other that are not related to each other um etc so i'm going to step off my soapbox now all right so behind me i got uh he's not going to be in an echo in a long hallway here's gardening enjoy betsy look at these beans we must plant some of them oh bill we must plant corn too i wonder if the vegetables in our garden will grow as large as these in the seed catalog there's daddy hello everybody well what are you doing we're planning a vegetable garden we want to grow beans tomatoes potatoes and pumpkins in the garden i like some pumpkin pie supper's ready we can discuss the garden at the table during the past few days bill and betsy have been making a plan for their garden they have used books and bulletins on gardening from their school library father likes the plan but the soil must be dry before betsy and bill can start the garden mr allen tests the soil as he squeezes it the soil does not make a ball it crumbles the soil is dry betsy and bill can start preparing their garden first mr allen shows bill how to turn the soil with a spading fork he has promised to lend them money for seed he has told bill to keep a record of expenses and of the harvest spading takes strong muscles the earth is faded deep and the soil is turned over the soil is loosened thoroughly so that the tender roots can grow through it easily betsy and bill are ready to buy seeds they are eager to start planting they can buy their seeds at the local store they want seeds that will grow well and it will produce large and good vegetables betsy chooses care and must also use the right kind of fertilizer bill takes the advice of the store keeper a fertilizer has elements in it which green plants use in making their food the fertilizer must be mixed with the soil in this rich loose soil plant roots will now find plenty of nourishment the seeds are planted in straight and even rose bill stretches a cord across the garden to guide him with a corner of the hole bill makes a shallow furrow across the south end of the garden ratty seeds will go in this first furrow each of these tiny seeds has food stored in it the baby plant will use this food in getting its start in life bill plants the ratty seeds very close together from each healthy seed will come one young radish plant betsy covers the seeds lightly with soil they will now germinate and grow if they have enough moisture and warmth it's a few weeks later and time to set out the tomatoes and to plant the potatoes the potatoes themselves are cut and the pieces planted mother shows bill how to cut the potatoes the eyes are buds from which roots and stems will sprout the potato has much stored food the new potato plant uses this food until its roots and leaves are developed bill leaves one eye on each piece weeds also thrive in the rich soil of the garden they must be destroyed otherwise they will rob the vegetables of nourishment and needed sunlight there has been no rain for several days so bill waters the garden with the hose the first crop of radishes is large enough for the table next week there will be another crop food made in the leaves with the help of sunlight has been stored in a swell six weeks have passed since the garden was started the beans are beginning to grow into vines they will twine about these poles and climb up high then the plants can get more sunlight the potato plants have a good start and are in bloom but potato beetles have appeared and are eating some of the leaves if the leaves are destroyed there will be no potatoes bill sprays arsenate of lead on the potato plants when the beetles eat the poisoned leaves they die the weeds have lost the carrots have grown large and firm food made in the leaves has been stored in the fleshy roots how good they will taste soon the tomatoes will be ripe the young tomato plants took root and grew large and strong to get bigger tomatoes bill prunes off the lower branches then more of the food made by the plant will go into the tomatoes but what are these tomato worms and big ones bill decides that he not the caterpillars will win this time but the pumpkin vines cause no trouble they are now in bloom and soon little pumpkins will form the corn tassel and silk stamens and pistols are parts of the flower as the sun shines on the green leaves they make food for the plant it is august now the crops need water rain rain it soaks into the soil the spreading roots of the garden plants will take in the water rain rain don't go away the gardeners say the rain saves bill from watering the garden in 10 more days the corn the potatoes and the onions can be harvested this is a good time for bill to work on his account book bill thinks his potatoes will pay after all he sprayed them in time and the beetles did only a little damage with a potato fork he digs enough to last the allen family a few days dams of the potatoes fall crop of potatoes will be bigger and firmer in another month the pumpkins will be ripe enough to harvest the corn is ready for roasting these ears are really fruits of the corn plant bill and betsy have decided to let some of the choice ears ripen on the stock for seed next year and to exhibit some at the state fair these are jack-o'-lanterns that betsy and i grew now you know why people feel like celebrating at harvest time all over the world people have feasting and good times when the crops have been gathered in our feast is ready bill you will take the corn out now watch out the years are hot now you understand why the pilgrims had a thanksgiving feast after their first harvest when you raised car like this it's worth celebrating uh so that one uh was a little shrunk and i had to hold it in next to the sprocketed wheel with my finger so there's a little bit of an indention of the film um and some a little bit of dirt or goo or i don't know what it is but it's on my finger it's it's kind of what you do uh anyways uh wow that had some other voices besides uh james brill and i was at first i was like whoa there's no james brill in this but no he shows up thank god but it's all post uh audio so they didn't shoot the audio at the same time or they didn't capture audio at the same time it was all added later it's just easier to do that uh film production back in the day so uh yeah that was pretty awesome i don't think this one has narration this is another encyclopedia britannica film i think yeah it is um but it's a great kind of narrative and the idea was this is shown to little kids and um they would tell a story so here's mrs penny packers package an autumn different pacing for encyclopedia britannica um but you know a lot of those mid to late 60s films plus the concept of a woman forgets a box and then the entire city stops to try to find uh this lady it's pretty hilarious uh okay so uh tapping tournament um i mentioned this earlier uh we have uh eight songs and so four competitions and i would say one of them is really literally a vote away it's just been almost 50 50. um i won't say which one it is but if you have not voted now is the time uh and i'm gonna play all the songs and um so we're going to start off with ime uh versus ducks inside of every big guy you'll find there is a little guy a small guy who wants to become a big guy i wonder why you big guys don't talk to all those little guys if you do you'll find the reasons why your little guy needs help from you it's easy for big guys to do and with a little help from you your small guy learns to grow up too forget to know that small god a really not so bad guy that little guy what you're gonna make for your daddy when all you have is a big lump of clay you might want to make him a real nice card for his birthday or valentine's day the cards made of clay [Music] so listen why not make your clay to a pot for him to grow daisies in [Music] [Music] before you start wondering how do you do it now what you're gonna make for your brother when all you have is a big box of paints you might wanna make him a nice batch of cookies and figure you'll get no complaints cookies made out of paper and paint will they don't taste much like a cookie should taste you'd be better get tough and celebrate premium [Music] all of you warehouse retails jobbers [Music] accomplishing [Music] licorice [Music] [Music] uh yeah so um thanks to somebody who watches our show from toronto um they told me what a cherry blossom is this garbage in your gut film was actually made in canada and i was like what is a cherry blossom because he said he basically said yeah i remember eating cherry blossoms as a kid and so uh he said yeah cherry blossom is a maraschino cherry and cherry syrup surrounded by a mixture of chocolate shredded coconut and roasted peanut pieces um they are sold in individual boxes um that are 45 grams or one and a half ounces uh in the little box uh contrary to common myth according to wikipedia filling is not injected inside the chocolate the cherry candy is coated with an enzyme that breaks it down uh from a solid to a liquid in one to two weeks uh wow that's crazy um it's manufactured by hershey and uh it's kind of fallen out of a favor with uh modern snackers um i think you can probably still get it but probably it's not as i probably can't just get it at the grocery store like you used to um so there you go there are the uh um the songs uh you have until sunday to vote and we really want your votes uh so a couple of people just voted um to take on uh found footage festival the following week and it will be we will smash them we will squish them um i'm looking forward to it i had a meeting with one of the members of found footage festival and it was a zoom meeting and the little clown uh thanksgiving uh picture was in the background he says i can't wait to win that and i was just like don't get your hopes up man you're gonna be gonna be disappointed because if we win so if they win they get that and they get the club painting uh if we win they they come down to north carolina dresses clowns and then they perform a clown thanksgiving where they service food and then they eat dressed as clowns so it's high stakes here we don't have to dress as clowns maybe we will just to celebrate but i don't know anyways they have to dress as clowns so uh thanks for tuning in today i'm sorry that youtube was such a bear today who knows what's going on i'm sure we'll read about it if you read any of the tech blogs um but uh twitch is okay facebook is okay uh and i think i think it's on twitter too so those are other
