Hello everybody. This is Skip Al Ziemer. Welcome to the AV Geeks Lunchtime Streaming Show where we watch old 16 mm films and uh So last night we did the Found Footage Festival Toe Tapping Tournament. And uh because of the pain meds and my pain, I had completely forgotten that I had competed last year and so the Maltese Unicorn actually had competed last year and had done pretty well. Uh and that was one of the ones that we re-voted on. Uh but thankfully uh I stepped up with Pass It On and We're Not Candy. And uh they're not as good, but I think they were pretty good and I think that if you watched last night you'll see that uh there's definitely uh the [clears throat] there's a contender that I think you should vote against because I just think it's it's represents everything I'm against. So anyways, uh look on Found Footage Festival's Toe Tapping Tournament last night. Um anyways, uh so today uh it's a new month and I what I want to do is talk about uh kind of a what we've been kind of doing in the future or what we hope to do in the future uh which is uh I'm trying to steer into getting more clicks. And uh what I have realized and by clicks I mean views on >> [cough] >> excuse me, on YouTube. And uh what I realized it's all about the thumbnail. So uh I've been working on some thumbnails uh and um so today I've been putting up a bunch of of thumbnails. Um you know, we're not changing the content of the films at all. But what what we're doing is adjusting the titles and we're adjusting the thumbnails in a way that will encourage people to watch. And uh the reason why is because honestly Brock the Brock Lesnar experiment uh where uh we had a film called uh Farm Family in Winter and there's a picture thumbnail that was randomly picked by YouTube that everybody assumed was that wrestler ultimate fighter Brock Lesnar and uh in 1 month we made like $3,900 uh because there were so many views it was being shared so much. The film at at no point mentions Brock Lesnar. There's no relationship whatsoever, but there's suddenly this big boost and I'm like, well, you know what? We need to like figure out a way to get that. And uh doing it randomly I don't think is a possibility, but we can try to uh make it um something we can at least try with the click bait-y things. So here's um next film we're going to watch. Well, we hear [music] that you never eat breakfast. Is it true? How come? Is it that you're not getting the kind of cereal you want? No? Maybe you're missing some of the fruit you'd [music] like. What about some bacon and eggs? >> [music] >> What about some No, huh? I know. I bet you're getting tired of the usual breakfast fare. You want something different. Now, does that appeal to you, huh? What if you could have anything you want? You are making me sick. Okay, [music] okay. So, it's not the kind of food. Maybe you have some family problem. That's it, isn't >> [music] >> You have a mother who Cathy, you know how much time it takes me to make breakfast. I get up early just to be sure you'll have the right food. My mother's not home right now. She's gone to work already. Okay. Some other problem. Your brothers and sisters, they fight at the table. It makes you upset. I don't have any brothers or sisters. Well then, what is it? Could it be that you just don't have food? Your dad is gone and your mother works to [music] make ends meet and all you have in the kitchen are a few crusts of bread. >> [music] [music] >> Well then, it's not a matter of money. >> [music] >> What is it, Cathy? Uh this is the favorite scene in many of my films, which is stop discuss. This is particularly great because uh we you know, it's generally related to something that is a triggering film. It's supposed to trigger provoke discussion and so that's what this is. It's a question and I have another in the series called Why Snack. Excuse me. And uh both of them show something that's going on, but they don't give any there's there's not really anything uh that's talked to educationally or instructionally to the kids. It's it the kids have to uh ex- explain during the discussion about what they saw and uh the teacher then uh prompts them to get them to think about why that is the case. And so, why doesn't Cathy eat breakfast breakfast? We're not told, but this is an opportunity for kids to to talk about why and their guesses and then that allows them to explore more the uh um you know, what's the point behind the film, which is that yes, kids should eat breakfast and there's plenty of reasons why they might not, but really what is the reason? And that is I don't know. Maybe she should always wakes up late. Maybe she's not interested in eating breakfast. Um whatever. So, uh I've been using um uh AI to generate a lot of these thumbnails. This one I generated today and there is a point of corruption where things start acting weirder and weirder and like the image that I had uploaded changed and now I look very different than I did and you can see the text is also freaking out and it's it's just getting really weird. >> [cough] >> Excuse me. So, I have a summer cold or spring cold as well. So, anyways, this is for the film uh Safety on the Sidewalk and Street. Enjoy. >> [music] >> I wonder what the kids are like around [music] here. I bet they're just like the kids in the old neighborhood. Now, be careful on your way to school though. You're not used to these streets and there's a lot of traffic on some of them. Let's take another look at this map we drew. I want to make sure you know the safest way to get there. This is our block. It's a long block, all right. There's no intersection until you turn onto Main here at the alley. This is it, right here. Watch that alley. I've seen a lot of trucks go through there. I will. Here's the street with the signals. Look, it's red. >> You know what to do there. Sure, Dad. Wait till it's green and then look left, right, left again. Stand on the curb while you wait though. Oh, and watch out for cars turning right when the light's red. Drivers are allowed to do that in this state and that's something new for you. Okay. Here's the crosswalk. I know what to do there, too. Good. Always use crosswalks. But remember to look first to be sure the car is going to stop before you leave the curb. The best way to tell is to watch the wheels. I know. The teacher told us about that last year. The crossing guard is here and there's the school. >> Mhm. Looks good. I've got some advice though. When we walk on the streets, we have to assume responsibilities just like when we drive. Use your own eyes and ears. Don't count on a driver or anybody else to look or listen for you, okay? Okay. Hey, it's that time. I better get going. Okay, bye. Goodbye. >> [music] >> That was good advice Jimmy got. Let's see if he follows [music] it, shall we? In a moment, we're going to have to make some choices about crossing the street. Hey! How would you go? Jimmy's friend wants to cross the street here between a line of parked cars. How should he do it? First, he makes sure that no one is in the two parked cars where he's going to cross. If either car should move, he could be crushed. Then he moves to the outer edge of the car fenders and stops. He looks left, right, then left again before crossing the street. Hey, my name is Mike. I'm Jimmy. Help me cross the street. But suppose there's only one car parked on the street. Should he cross in front of it or behind it? Which would you choose? Did you choose to go in front of the car? Okay, let's see what happens. Let's put ourselves in the driver's seat of an approaching car and see how it looks from there. We can't see Jimmy's friend behind the parked car and he can't see us. Obviously, crossing in front of the parked car was not the right choice, was it? But a lot of people make this bad mistake. Now, let's watch Jimmy cross the street the correct way. He goes to the back of the parked car and stops on the curb. The driver of the approaching car can see Jimmy clearly and Jimmy can see the car coming. Then he moves to the outer edge of the car and looks both ways to make sure the street is safe, then he crosses quickly. He doesn't run and he doesn't stop to play around in the street. Will Jimmy remember what his mother said about crossing the alley? He hears a truck coming and remembers and it's a good thing he did. Not all drivers stop before coming out of an alley as they're supposed to. This means there's a traffic signal ahead. This is the usual signal, the kind on Jimmy's street. Yellow means wait. Red means no. Green means to cross if it's safe. Now, Jimmy and his friend are going to cross the street at a traffic light. They're going to make some mistakes. See if you can tell what they do wrong. Did you see the mistakes? Let's look at that again. They were playing instead of watching the traffic. What if those cars didn't stop? Another dangerous mistake. They ran across the street instead of walking. So, let's go back and do it right. Stand back on the curb. Look left, right, left. Watch the wheels to make sure the car is stopped. It Cross quickly, but don't run. Different places have different kinds of signals. Some have pedestrian signals that tell us what to do. Sometimes there are buttons to push to make the signal change to walk like this. You have to wait a bit. This means to walk if it's safe, but remember to look for approaching vehicles. It's especially important to look left, right, and left again. What does this mean? Do you stop right there? Do you go back? No. Finish crossing the street if you've already started. But Jimmy shouldn't leave the curb to begin crossing. There isn't enough time. Don't walk means do not leave the curb. These signals are for our protection and it's smart to do what they say. This is to tell drivers that a school is near here and to watch for children. This means a crosswalk is ahead where children cross the street. But sometimes drivers don't notice the signs. Use your own eyes and ears. Don't count on a driver or anybody else to look or listen for you. From here, we can see the motorcycle coming, but Jimmy and his friend can't. Hey, wait. Luckily, Jimmy had been listening and heard the motorcycle [music] coming in time to stop his friend. Here's how it looks from the motorcycle. The motorcycle should stop when the car stops, especially at a crosswalk. But motorcyclists make mistakes, too. And Jimmy's friend should have stopped and looked to be sure. When we walk on the streets, we have to assume responsibilities, too. Some busy highways have overpasses high over the street so people can cross safely. Or underpasses under the street like this one. But some places don't even have sidewalks. If you have no sidewalk to walk on, do this. Walk single file on the left side of the road facing traffic. You can see what's coming and get out of the way if you have to. In places where there is plenty of room like this outside of the city, it's all right to walk in a group as long as you stay well off the main roadway and face traffic. The more distance between you and the cars, the safer you are. Walking on the roadway at night can be very dangerous. Avoid it if you can. It's very hard for drivers to see you. So, wear light-colored clothes with reflecting tape that shines in the headlights and carry a flashlight if you have one. Use tape on your right arm and leg and across the shoulder like this. Just as there are special safety rules for walking on the road at night, there are also things to remember about walking in the rain and snow. Not everybody uses an umbrella, but if you do, don't let it block your view. Sometimes cars back out all of a sudden. Watch for backup lights, exhaust, brake lights. You have to watch. She gets the umbrella out of the way so she can see. All's clear. Wet streets can be slippery. It's a good thing no cars are coming. Cars can't stop as quickly as usual when the streets are slippery. Walk slowly and very carefully when streets and sidewalks are slick. If a car has to stop suddenly on a slippery street, the car may skid and go out of control. This can be an especially dangerous situation. Always pay attention. Look left, right, and left again, then cross quickly. Now let's get back to Jimmy and his friend on their way to school. Crossing guards are specially trained. They know how to keep you safe where traffic is especially heavy. So, stay inside the crosswalk and do as they say, but use your own eyes, too. A wrong move. Another car might come along and hit that open door and hurt too. This is the wrong way. Let's do it right. Like this. On the curb side. Good for you, Jimmy. Cross at the crosswalk, right? It looks like it's going to be a good day for Jimmy. He's made some new friends already and he got to school [music] safely. That's the right way to start any day. >> [music] >> All right. Uh this next film Um and I'm trying to give as little visual time to myself as possible so that YouTube will pick one of these uh thumbnails and get us uh a lot more views and hits. Uh this is This is the deal is like we have a lot of great films, but because of people browsing through YouTube, they don't they're not excited about the thumbnails from the from the films that I post. So, we have to kind of jazz it up a bit to get more visibility. And so this is a film Modern Engines and Energy Conservation. Enjoy. >> [music] >> Fire. Whenever an object is moved, work is done. If you happen to be the person doing the moving, you'll probably agree that this is work. Today, much of our work is done by machines. There are machines for pushing, machines for pulling, machines for lifting, and machines for lowering. They all move objects. As you know, energy is needed to operate a machine. Where does this machine get its energy? From gasoline. Like most fuels, gasoline contains stored chemical energy, which scientists call potential energy. But the potential energy cannot move the race car until it has been converted into mechanical energy. The part of a machine that converts the potential energy of the fuel into mechanical energy is the engine. But how does an engine do this? The part of an automobile engine where energy conversion takes place is called the cylinder. Inside the cylinder is a moving part, the piston. When the engine is running, a fine mixture of gasoline and air is drawn into the cylinder. As the piston rises, it compresses the fuel-air mixture and thus increases its pressure. The fuel-air mixture is ignited and burns with explosive force, producing heat. The heat further increases the pressure of the gases in the cylinder. In this way, the chemical energy of the fuel is converted into heat energy. The high pressure of the hot gases forces the piston down. The force of this moving piston is the mechanical energy, which turns the wheels of the car. Many engines work on the same principle as the automobile engine, pistons. Although automobile engines and other piston engines are useful devices, they are not perfect. They cannot change all of the chemical energy of the fuel into usable mechanical energy. Piston engines waste most of the chemical energy. But how is this energy wasted? When fuel is burned, some of its chemical energy is converted into light and sound. Some energy is also wasted in friction between moving parts, vibration, or heat radiated from the engine itself. But all of these energy losses are very minor when compared to the loss of energy in the exhaust gases. Since this heat energy has not been converted into mechanical energy, it is wasted. This is the single biggest waste of energy in a piston engine. While the piston engine operates on the up-and-down movement of pistons, another kind of engine operates on a circular or rotary motion. This jet engine is one kind of turbine engine. The part of the engine made up of curved blades and a shaft is called the rotor because it rotates. The front part of the rotor is called the compressor. While the engine is operating, the blades of the compressor draw air into the engine and compress it. The high-pressure air is forced into the combustion chambers where fuel is injected and burned. The chemical energy of the fuel is released in hot, expanding gases. The gases rush through the turbine blades of the rotor, forcing it to spin at terrific speeds. >> [snorts] >> Because the spinning of the rotor is smooth and steady, less energy is wasted in vibration than in a piston engine. In addition, the turbine engine has fewer moving parts and so less energy is wasted through friction. Because the fuel is burned in a steady stream, the jet engine, like all turbine engines, develops more heat energy and therefore more mechanical energy than a piston engine of the same weight. But no engine can convert all the potential energy of the fuel to usable energy. The jet's exhaust is very hot. This is heat energy that has not been converted into mechanical energy. It is wasted. The remaining energy spins the shaft of the rotor. Some of the energy which turns the rotor is used to turn the compressor. The rest of the energy can be harnessed to do useful work. For example, the rotor can be used to turn an electrical generator, helicopter blades, or automobile wheels. When a propeller is attached to the rotor of a turbine engine, it becomes a turboprop engine. The turboprop engine is similar to the turbojet engine, except that the turbojet has no propeller. In a jet, the hot gases formed by the burning of the fuel expand and push in all directions with equal force. The gases pushing backward rush out through an opening at the rear of the engines, but gases pushing in the opposite direction are blocked by the engine itself. This results in a strong push against the engine called thrust. Thrust is the force that propels the engine and the airplane forward. Jets often fly best at altitudes of 6 to 8 mi above the Earth, where the air is thin, so there is less drag. Since they perform well at such high altitudes, have you ever wondered why they aren't used for space travel? In a jet engine, the potential energy of the fuel is converted into heat energy by burning the fuel, that is, combining it with oxygen from the air. But about 20 mi up, the air becomes so thin that there is not enough oxygen to burn the fuel. How can this problem be solved? The solution is easy. Build an engine that carries its own supply of both fuel and oxygen. Such an engine is called a rocket engine. Although the basic principle of rocket engines is very simple, space rockets are quite complicated. To prevent explosions, which would occur if the powerful fuels were burned too fast, rocket engines must be designed to carefully control the rate at which the fuel burns. There are two main types of rocket engines, solid fuel and liquid fuel. The liquid fuel rocket contains separate tanks of liquid fuel and liquid oxygen or a chemical that can supply oxygen. Solid fuel rockets contain a solid mixture of fuel and a chemical that will furnish oxygen. In both types of rocket engines, the fuel is oxidized or burned in a combustion chamber. Hot gases are produced, which expand and push in all directions in the chamber. Just as in the jet engine, the hot gases rush out an opening in the rear of the rocket engine, while the gases pushing in the opposite direction thrust the rocket forward. Even though there are differences between the engines you have seen, they all must go through the same steps to convert fuel to energy. What are these steps? Today, scientists are developing totally new kinds of engines, engines that do not depend upon chemical energy at all. For example, why doesn't this ship have smokestacks? It is nuclear-powered. In nuclear engines, fuel is not burned, so there is no smoke. Instead, a small amount of atomic fuel is converted directly into a great amount of heat energy, which is used to produce mechanical energy. For travel in outer space, the ion engine, a type of electric rocket, is being developed. This engine uses the force of a stream of electrically charged atoms called ions rushing out of the engine to drive a spacecraft. Because the ion engine uses only a small amount of electricity, the power it develops is very small. But in outer space, where there is no air resistance, such engines are able to gradually build up speeds of hundreds of thousands of kilometers per hour. Another kind of engine carries no fuel at all. The solar engine converts the rays of the sun to electrical energy or to heat, which can then be converted to mechanical energy. In the future, it is possible that immense satellite solar power stations will be constructed and placed in orbit high above the Earth. Each satellite might spread out over 20 square miles and weigh millions of tons. Here in space, above the shadows and clouds of Earth, acres of solar panels would capture the solar energy of sunlight 24 hours a day. This energy would be beamed to receiver stations on Earth in the form of radio waves, which would be converted into electrical energy for our homes and factories. The universe itself will become a vast power source as future scientists and engineers develop totally new methods of energy conversion. All right. Uh I had mistitled that. That was modern engines and energy conversion and not conservation. So, there you go. All right. Uh This one was a great one to make. Uh We all know who that is. Here he comes. Uncle Smiley, tumbling around like a carnival [music] clown. He's a part of the town. He's our Uncle Smiley. When there's a job to be done, old Uncle Smiley's always the one. No matter what happens, [music] it's bound to be fun. So, Uncle Smiley, get up and go. So, Uncle [music] Smiley, get up and go. >> [music] >> Hey, what are you all doing there waiting in front of that fence? We're waiting for Uncle Smiley to bring the key. This is the day when me and Uncle Smiley started [music] to build the junkyard playground. What's a junkyard playground? Well, it's a special kind of playground [music] that you >> Hey, what do you mean you and Uncle Smiley? Well, when all of us and Uncle Smiley built the junkyard playground. Hey, there's Uncle Smiley coming now with the key. But what's a junkyard [music] playground? Well, I told you. It's a special kind >> it's a shame that vacant lots like that just lie around with nobody ever using them except [music] to throw trash and garbage in. But what is a junkyard playground? Golly, we've already told you a hundred times. If you don't understand by now, then you just better watch us [music] and Uncle Smiley and find out. >> Yeah, actions speak louder than words. What words? Oh, well, you're too much. >> [music] [music] [music] [music] [singing] [music] [music] [music] [music and singing] [music] [music] [music] >> What are you all and Uncle Smiley doing here? We're building a spin thing. What's a spin thing? Well, you [music] spin around on it. >> Do you know where we got all the things we're using? Sure, we just found them lying around the lot except the tools. Uncle bought those. [music] Except the rope, too, cuz me and Uncle Smiley went to a big ship line and they just gave it to us. >> For nothing? Sure, you can get a lot of things like that for nothing. You've just got to ask. >> [music] [music] [music] [snorts] [music] [music] [music] >> Is this the junkyard playground yet? Not yet, we've just started building. It takes a while to make things, you know. This is going to be a car. What kind of car? A car car, silly. What other kind is there? Well, there are lots of kinds of cars. Real ones and toy ones, yellow ones, and there's racing cars and old cars. This is a racing car. And we made it out of old pipes and boards [music] and stuff just lying around the lot. >> Except the cable spools. Uncle Smiley and I went to the power company and they had lots of them lying around, so they gave us some for nothing. You know what's so good about making toys with junkyard stuff? Is that you can always take them apart after you get tired of them and make something new again. >> And grown-ups won't get mad at you for taking things apart. >> [music] [music] >> You know, paint is such great stuff. You can change the looks of anything with paint. It's weird stuff, too. I'll bet that wall hadn't been painted in a hundred years and we made it look like new by the time we were finished with it. >> [music] >> Where'd you get the paint? Oh, just lying around the ground. No, I'm kidding, but it was almost the same thing though because Uncle Smiley went to a big paint company and they gave us most of the paint we wanted for almost nothing. Yeah, because it was all funny colors and kinds that people don't buy much of. I like funny colors. Me, [music] too. Boy, is paint weird. >> [music] [music] [music] >> What's that Uncle Smiley's making now? Can't you tell? That's a swing thing. Is that like a spin thing? No, you swing [music] on a swing thing and spin on a spin thing. >> [music] [music] >> Wow, where'd you get all those metal bells? We got them from a big oil company. >> [music] >> They had lots of them all over the place. Uncle Smiley told them we were going to build a big junkyard playground and they just gave them to us. But what is a junkyard playground? I keep telling you you're looking at one right now. You mean all those bells and things? Well, yeah, but they're only part of a junkyard playground. It's the idea that counts. You mean like taking all sorts of junk and things you can get for free and making play things out of them? Yeah, and the idea that you can take them apart and build something else whenever you feel [music] like it. >> I'm beginning to get the idea. >> [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> Uncle Smiley thought we ought to make a garden, too, >> [music] >> with a real tree in it. A lot of us never planted anything before or even seen anything planted [music] except in the movies. It wasn't that hard, though. Did you get those flowers for nothing, [music] too? No, we had to buy them all. But, it was worth it. Do you know how important trees and plants are? I bet you think I don't know, but I do. Trees and plants help make the air that everybody in the world breathes, and lots of things like that. Hey, you're right. How'd you know about that? I know about a lot of things. >> [music] [music] [music and singing] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> Oh, yeah. There's some great toe tappers in there. And, you know, I didn't really mind uh Uncle Smiley for all the toe tappers, which I probably should have done. Maybe we'll revisit that. Uh okay, so this next film, I don't think I've shown this on the channel. Uh some of these other films I have, but this one is um This is a KFC commercial that was way, way, way uh shrunk and far gone. And uh so, I decided to go ahead and show it to you. This is uh it's warped so bad that it wasn't fitting in the gate of the telecine, and so I had to hold it with my finger, and it so it go it it's it nuts. Anyways, here it is. >> [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> Yeah. I wish I had a decent copy of that commercial, cuz it's so hip. And it features Colonel Sanders. So, we love that. Okay, so this uh uh I don't think I've shown this in the past, maybe I have. But, we found part three. Very exciting. Uh we thought it was missing, but here it is, part three. Uh I went downstairs to see if I could find the film vault, but I couldn't find it to show you. Uh but yeah, that's uh that's that film is a complete mystery to me.
