Welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show. My name is Skip Alzheimer and we watch old 16 millimeter films here. So we're going to try the scanner today. I know you're sick of me complaining about the scanner, but here we go. Uh, this is shaping progress. And this title, I'm like, I don't know what is this about. I have no idea. Um, can you guess? Uh, say in the comments. The simplest, least costly way to produce intricate metal shapes for centuries is becoming even more precise, more versatile, more productive. 90% of the durable goods manufactured today contain metal castings. because you, your neighbors, and all Americans are finding more and more needs for castings. Foundaries are playing an increasingly vital role in our standard of living. The skills, knowledge, and craftsmanship now being applied to foundry processes are [music] bringing technological innovations that fulfill the classic goals of mass production as never before. Witness recent process developments by one member of the industry, one of the largest with plants in four Midwestern states processing castings by the millions in five basic casting alloys. But before metal molds and machines can perform their wonders, minds of men must think and plan. It is a matter of being imaginative [music] yet practical and bold because ongoing innovation requires [music] investment in better ways to make to move to schedule. In this case, the complete revamping of one of our casting processing areas. Storage and routing through processing and quality control operations is being mechanized and computer controlled. Completion will culminate years of meticulous planning, scheduling, and computer simulation because normal production must continue in this same area while we build and train our production people on a completely new system. Symbolic of how our business is changing are the people who make parts with their minds. From drawings for complex parts to be diecast in aluminum programs are developed in punch tape language. These punch tapes enable our programmer without [music] leaving his office to guide the machines which mill graphite electrodes our die casting patterns. This electrode represents one of several mold components for a transmission body. on an electrical discharge machine. [music] It forms the hard steel die with a miniature lightning bolt which chips away metal. Though not new, this EDM process produces dyes that are finely detailed and accurate. A good example of what can be done with large aluminum diecast machines and imaginative [music] designing is this transmission case. Our engineers found ways to mass-roduce in one piece what had been handed to them as an assembly of several cast, machined and sheet metal parts. The cost reduction is considerable and quality is improved. For sand casting small iron parts, a number of patterns for the same or different parts are mounted together to increase efficiency. Patterns can be changed automatically and automatic molding machines are replacing traditional methods. >> [music] >> There are many ways to make the cores that form the internal configuration of castings and the methods vary according to such requirements as lowest cost, the need for finer detail or greater resistance to stresses during the casting process. That's Incentives for mechanization include consistent quality, improved working conditions, and increased productivity without increased human effort. Metal energy and the melting, transporting, and pouring of iron are undergoing a steady evolution of innovations and improvements. Before going into the electric induction furnaces, each charge is preheated to,400°. This removes any oil or moisture and increases the melting capacity of the furnaces. Scrap metal is used, shredded junk car hulks, sheet metal trimmings, chips, shavings, and scraps from machine shops. Materials which are unusable in their existing form are recycled into useful products. Coke fired cupilas, a traditional tool for melting iron, are being redeveloped to save energy. A new cupula, forerunner of better things to [music] come, will recycle heat that conventional cupulas lose up their stacks and reduce heat energy requirements for the [music] melting process by 17%. Surplus heat will also be available to pipe to other operations and further reduce our energy consumption. In our heat intensive industry, energy conservation has become as important as quality control, which has to be a way of life when mass-roducing reliable parts. Samples from each induction furnace are analyzed by our metallurgists for chemical and mechanical properties. They have exacting standards [music] for gray iron, malible iron, nodular iron, and arm steel, which make up our iron product line. From this glass enclosed control center, the operator manages six furnaces, scheduling, controlling, and monitoring each charge and the transfer of metal from furnaces to hot metal carriers for rapid distribution from furnaces through carriers to holding furnaces on the pouring lines. systems are designed to conserve maximum heat. They are reducing our total energy use significantly. Automatic pouring is a feature in these systems. Our engineers developed rotary mechanical pouring and are making these machines available to the industry. They're a classic case of applying skills, [music] experience, and craftsmanship to the process rather than the traditional application directly to the product. This also applies to permanent mold aluminum casting. The entire casting process for these automotive pistons [music] is automatic, including the finishing operations. >> [music] [music] [music] [music] >> Iron Castings are the largest part of our business. These mechanized lines are for nodular iron parts. Of course, automatic shakeout operations are by far the most desirable way to handle hot metal castings. Mechanical hands can [music] safely handle hot steering knuckles. Each part requires individual finishing and testing. High volume production makes it possible to mechanize many of them, but we never forget that each individual part has an important job to do. Sound castings should ring like a bell. >> [bell] >> This machine precisely measures the frequency of each crankshaft's tone. Then they are spun [music] to automatically locate the precise balance point. Our engineers developed a way to cast [music] automotive connecting rods that have many advantages over the forgings they replaced. And we developed these centric grinders for [music] finishing on iron diesel pistons and many other parts in one operation. both of the opa controls or it won't operate. We're set up for high volume production of castings as large as these gray iron diesel engine blocks. Versatility is essential in our business because we can cast with many alloy variations with dozens of heat treatment options with many options on molding methods and cing methods. It puts us in a position to advise customers objectively on the best materials and processes for their parts and be able to say you can have it in any shape you want to do what it's supposed to do and there's no upper limit to quantity. Mass production of intricate metal shapes economically involves far more than machines turning tons of metal into huge quantities of parts. Efficiency, precision, and reliability are attained by the minds which design, build, control, [music] monitor and maintain the machines through the skills, judgment and imaginations of foundry people. Precision high volume casting starts with planning is made possible by building. Investment in organized flow, predictable processes and a comfortable working environment depends on maintaining schedules and vigilant quality control and thrives on innovation. All ongoing continuous because yesterday's miracles become today's commonplace and may be obsolete tomorrow. So, we must continue shaping progress toward supplying [music] tomorrow's needs. The myriad precision castings which you, your neighbors, and all Americans will want in the years ahead. [music] Okay. So, that made me happy because there was a lot of manufacturing footage in there um casting um various uh pieces of parts and foundaries and all that stuff. And that reminds me, I was talking with someone who's uh basically starting a gummy company where he's making gummies. And not gummies that are that have uh CBD or THC. Uh they're just gummies that have fine qualities. and [clears throat] they cast gummies in they basically have these molds that come down into corn starch and then they pour the gelatin liquid gelatin into those uh the corn starch and then they clear away the cornstarch and then reuse it. Uh so um yeah, it's the same process. It's really fascinating. And uh the person I was talking to was basically saying that it's like $20,000 to make one of those molds, those aluminum molds. I'm like, "Holy cow." All right. Uh what are letters for? Really? Letters? What are they for? I mean, missing persons asked, "What are words for?" But I'm just I'm getting down to the root of it. Um, as an adult, it's uh it's fascinating to kind [snorts] of see the pacing is is what's maddening, [laughter] but I still dig it. Um, this is National Film Board of Canada, but it doesn't have hockey in it, so I think we're going to be okay showing it. Let's take a look and see. This is Face of the Earth. If if [clears throat] we do get taken down, then I will bounce to something else. But I don't think this is going to be a problem. >> [music] >> Heat. Heat. [music] [music] >> [music] >> When we look at the face of the earth, we see a mystery. Heat. [music] Heat. These rocks once lay flat. Some titanic force raised them. Not all mountains are made in the same way. This volcano is young geologically, perhaps only 5,000 years old. Below stretch fields of lava hundreds of feet thick, petrified in motion. Beneath the crust, a 40ft high cavern, a tunnel to the base of the volcano. Through here flowed the molten rock. still silent evidence of past violence. But not all clues to the origin of the Earth's surface are silent. Heat. Heat. Why is it so hot inside the Earth? One of the clouds of dust swirling around the sun compacted into a molten orb. Gradually the outer layer became solid or almost solid. This >> [music] >> layer, the mantle, contained slowmoving convection currents. Where the currents rose, material was moved upward to form a scum or crust. This crust drifted across the surface on the currents. Where two crusts or plates met, one was driven down on the descending current. The result was heat and turbulence which caused earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Why heat? [music] Heat. Heat. [music] >> [music] >> Clouds of water vapor were released as steam. and rose to form the atmosphere. The vapor condensed and fell to Earth, forming the oceans. [music] [music] >> [music] [music] [music] >> Rain fell on the newly created mountains very slowly washing them away. Where two currents in the mantle converged, the worn down mountains heaved and buckled. Slowly the raindrops eroded these mountains to the sea. Layer by layer the sediment was laid on the ocean floor and became rock. Once again came the great push upwards. When we look at a sedimentary mountain, we see the forced and folded layers. Meanwhile, the rain just kept falling. [music] [music] As the canyons deepen and widen into outwashed plains and the rivers return the mountains once again to the sea, the forces of mountain building are still at work. Many scientists believe the earth was once a single land mass. They suggest the pull of the currents split this mass into the continental pattern we recognize now. At the San Andreas fault in California, the land on each side is moving in opposite directions, carried along on the currents within the Earth. Along this rift or fault, volcanoes spewed [music] forth their molten lava not so long ago, and someday they will erupt again. There is no end to the cycle of change. Um mostly because of the soundtrack. the soundtrack was like all over the place. It's like kind of on your radio dial. You're turning mostly hanging out at the the left end and the lower numbers where the the public radio and the college stations would be. That's my take on it. Um but uh wow, that was awesome. All right, this film is a koscope. And so kinoscopes of course were shot on video or edited on video and then they were bumped back to film using a camera that was aimed at a monitor, a high high quality monitor in some cases, but in some cases not so high quality. So this one I think is missing the title, but it's Dare to Care and it's got people in hospitals making mistakes. So enjoy. >> One of the pathologists told me that she's got the best technique of all the technicians. She takes a little extra care and apparently the patients love her. A little extra care. That probably sums it up. It's almost 2 years to the day and all it would have taken was a little care. Hey, how you doing today? Oh, >> fine. >> Good. You all set for your X-rays? >> Yeah. It's against the rules to keep it in your room. >> What if I want some cigarettes? >> You don't need any cigarettes while you're in here. Besides, it's a bad habit. You'll be on the fifth floor here. Take this to the clerk on five and she'll take care of you. And be sure to give your wife the money. You'd probably lose it and then blame us. >> Oh, let's go to the fifth floor. I don't if you will at all. >> Wasn't she rude? >> And how? Oh, boy. If they're more like her around here, this is going to be a terrific experience. Sometimes you wonder what ever happened to common courtesy. If people begin with us having the wrong attitude, it can set the stage for things long after they're gone. >> Well, Jim, this one shouldn't be too difficult, but uh we'd better attend to it now before it gets out of hand. >> Right. Here's the file. Oh, listen. Before we get too far into this, remind me when we're done, if you would, that uh we need to talk about some additional coverage with your company on another matter. >> Okay. >> I think you've got copies of all of this. What's the woman claiming? >> Well, she says that she called the nurse. She called out loud because she uh couldn't reach the buzzer. She wanted to go to the bathroom. She couldn't wait. It was about 1:00 a.m. And when she got out of bed, she slipped and fell and broke her hip. >> Well, let's see. It says here that the floor wasn't wet. >> Yes. And I uh talked to the nurse who uh filled this report out. She said that the patient wasn't medicated. She also said that the bell was in place. >> I wonder why the woman couldn't find it. >> Well, that's a good question. Maybe she just couldn't locate it uh waking up like that. You know, half awake. >> Well, let's see. It says here that the bed rails were up. Uh probably uh you can do that with those 3/4 rails uh which is better than going out over the end of the bed with the full rails and the beds are lowered at night so she probably got right out. Uh the uh nurse who filled out this report uh said that the patient in the next bed uh woke up after the fall and she buzzed the nurse and the nurse came immediately. So apparently her buzzer was in place then. >> Well, it seems that way. Uh when the nurse filled out the form, the uh patient in the other bed stated that she had heard the nurse repeatedly tell the woman who fell uh not to get out of bed without assistance. >> All right, let's see. Dr. Ray examined the woman. She was x-rayed and he did find the fracture >> which they subsequently treated. The woman then remained. That one was settled without much difficulty. The nurse filled out the incident report properly and because of that we were able to substantiate what really happened. Well, I guess that's about it. It's been a long night and I'm going home. But you and I both know that whether I'm here or not, the hospital continues to function. The attitudes we bring to our jobs make the difference in how we do what we do. [music] [music] >> [music] >> Heat. Heat. [music] >> [music] [music] >> Yeah. So this is a internal document. So this is meant to only be shown at uh to hospital staff and administration and it's all about the liabilities um that they're they face. Um, so yeah, uh, I'm sure this was part of a whole educational campaign. Um, and you know, so that last one is, well, everybody cared. And so this woman who had a claim against us, she wasn't able to do it because there's all this evidence that uh, it wasn't our fault. She didn't pay attention. Blah blah blah. You know, that's what ultimately that's all about. uh is about the uh financial responsibilities of neglect etc. So there you go. And so yeah, this was kind of late for a Kinoscope, but this is also during that weird time where uh something could be shot on video, edited it on video, and that's how they did that solarization effect. Uh that was a video effect. Uh but then they realized like distributing it some hospitals didn't have umatic BTRs to play back but they knew that a lot of hospitals had 16 millimeter projectors because that's was the format for training. So that's why they dumped it to to film. And so there's a lot of films that are in the late 80s and 90s that kind of fit that. Uh some from the 70s, but I have a feeling that this film was from the 80s. um maybe early 80s given that guy's Captain Kangaroo uh jacket. But uh thanks for watching today.
