first lawless day has apparently sparked off 12 hours of unprecedented chaos around the country our cameras were out to record the events three children were killed and another 17 injured in an accident in the city when a red station wagon failed to stop at the intersection of high street and main street a bus full of school children swerved to avoid the vehicle and overturned a number of cases of food poisoning were reported after meat was sold from a supermarket where animals especially dogs had been wandering and reportedly taking meat from the shop fridge the contaminated meat was returned to the fridge and sold unwittingly meanwhile health department officials were busy this evening trying to rid city streets of a large population of rats the rats were attracted by rubbish and litter if not brought under control soon the health department says there could be outbreaks of leptospirosis a disease which causes meningitis and kidney failure and can be fatal 30 rugby players and a small group of picnickers were today treated at the public hospital as a result of a friendly rugby game in which the rules were ignored most of the injured were treated and discharged there have been reports today of shopkeepers charging very high prices in one case a hundred dollars was charged for a bottle of milk which was only half full with property laws also unenforced there were many reported thefts it is understood that shoplifting occurred in response to anger at the high prices charged in one of the most daring escapades a woman shopper stole an entire cash register from a supermarket this afternoon at a special news conference the prime minister was asked the question what would be wrong with having a lawless day every day if people want to go around being nasty to election declared and get the suspension taken off my record well tell me matt how did it all get started well it actually got started in history class project any more questions for group one okay very good boy that was great that was great all right come on let's go let's go who's speaking for group two i am come on matt we don't have much time now come on let's go okay our subject is political reform and the way that we could start political reform is to change things in this school the universe is going to tell you about it gracie okay things to reform one with what more of an open school what do you mean by more open school choices like being able to go off uh school grounds during lunch time okay two we don't think we should have hall passes does that mean we can go to the library anytime we want to who wants to go library okay okay okay so everybody would be able to get inside questions later on finish up see if i can hear myself three we don't think we should have grades we haven't told you our best idea okay uh we thought about the real political parties in their conventions they put together a platform it's a list of things that they plan to do and we thought if everyone run for student officers in the school would put out a platform then the other students would know what they stand for i think the problems with this platform idea were obvious right from the start let's add on to these ideas anybody think you've got anything you want to ask i think they had a good idea about going out for lunch but with the time we have now it doesn't make sense to go anywhere we have to have more time so we can get back yeah right [Applause] i think we should have just as much power as the teachers and if we have a bad teacher we should be able to suspend the teacher hey hey here you have these rowdy young people first thing getting up shouting in class disorderly showing no respect whatsoever we weren't the ones who were making the noise we were just trying to present our ideas to the class and that's what free speech is all about you don't stop one group from presenting their ideas because you're afraid of what someone else will do in order to have a good learning experience you have to have an atmosphere of freedom in the classroom and you're going to take chances when you have this atmosphere i'm sure my being a lawyer has been some influence on matt we talk about politics at the dinner table everybody's encouraged to develop his own opinions i think of politics is my hobby it's my job to anticipate trouble i've got to protect the rights of the majority to get an education what happened next man well i propose to the student council that they make it a rule that anybody who runs for any kind of student council office has to have a platform any questions ideas mike will you define platform for us platform is like if somebody's running for certain offices or something they tell what they want to do if they want to change rules or make better the rules that are there or get something done i think people just lie they'll use that line vote for me and i'll set you free yeah man if you think they're lying don't vote for them you can tell when people are lying not really [Music] okay anybody baker do you think mr langston will let us try to change all his rules well eva i think you should try and find out okay who's all for it who's all against it two-thirds of the student council the most responsible students in the school voted against the idea yeah but what if they had i would still have to ask myself whether or not in good conscience i could turn this school into a political arena you know doji that the student council voted against having everybody run on a platform right yes well matt and i decided that our platform was good and we were going to run no matter what and once we knew that we were running i thought well why don't we get other people to run for the other offices and then we could all run together and be a slate and then we could really get something done so you got together slate of candidates in your history class right was it the same group that thought of the platform idea yeah we were all friends and we were all pretty political hey how about act alliance for constructive teaching hey yeah you know that's in our nation action yeah yeah yeah yeah but it kind of seems that you know the subject really isn't about teaching it's about rights that's what we're trying to do think of something that has to do with it right reform is it's going to happen soon when no no wait a minute [Music] sure students unify for rights of expression hey that's good this late was i ran for president tracy for vice president carried for secretary and monica for treasure what next well we wanted to get known so tracy wrote up an article for the school newspaper this article is the opinion of a special interest group if i print this opinion i've got to print everybody's opinions but this would make it more interesting i think it would get out of hand pretty quickly a lot of stuff they put in the paper nobody reads isn't the chess club a special interest group what about the y those groups are open to everybody well look at sports if you're not good enough for teamwork just don't get into all that okay try to see this thing from my point of view for a minute i've got the whole community to answer to i've got the school board i've got your parents i've got other everybody else's parents and i don't think for a minute they're going to stand by and watch the school attacked through the school newspaper we're not attacking this and who do you think puts up the money for the school newspaper it's the school board mr langston we're not attacking the school i'd say you've got some pretty negative ideas about some of its policies well i'd say we've got positive approaches to making better rules it seems to me you kept pretty calm yeah we all decided before he went in that nobody would get mad if we did he'd just throw us all out and say i told you so you're all just a bunch of trouble makers i would advise any student who's going to stand up for his rights to do it calmly politely and constructively if you attack why then the people have no response other than to get mad at you and sometimes they have a lot of power over you if you're reasonable then they have a chance to be reasonable back matt i assume that you didn't take mr langston's advice and drop the whole thing no but you did give up an article we made our own memory graph of it how did you feel about the shoe students handing out mimographs to their inflating platform they were within their rights i tried to tell them it was bad judgment but judgment is a funny thing nobody can be right all the time no matter how wise and experienced a person is he needs to listen to the ideas of others that's the ideal of our democratic society these kids were taking the education that they learned in the classroom and using it in real life that's what it's all about because history is not something that just happened 200 years ago it's happening today tomorrow what happened next tracy and i propose to the student council they make the sheer slate official candidates in the election how did that go all four all again here again you had the existing student council voting heavily against their proposal it's proved something what would you say it proves it proves to me that we already have a pretty good way of installing student officers what was the normal procedure for nominating candidates for office well the student council nominates two people for each office and they have to be approved by the principal and the faculty advisor i could have vetoed the nominations of matt and tracy right then but i respected their right to get nominated by the normal procedure and you got nominated for president and tracy for vice president anyway right you can chisel that on my grave this man believes in normal procedure how did the shoe slate run its campaign well we handed out a few more mammograph sheets we wanted to put up posters but my feeling about the posters was that some of these kids hadn't been nominated by the normal procedures and didn't have a right to put up posters we were a group that stood for something we wanted to campaign some of these sure candidates really didn't have a chance they were just trying to write in on the popularity of matt and tracy tracy and i wanted to put sure after our names on the ballots but he wouldn't allow that either if i let matt and tracy put sure after their names on the ballot they would have had a tremendous advantage because of the publicity i was already getting phone calls from some of the parents because of the mimeograph sheets what happened in the assembly well every officially nominated candidate is supposed to make a short speech before the student body tracy and i made an agreement to talk about sure and ask the people to write in the names of terry and monica if i'm elected vice president i will do my best to get the things done that you feel and i feel should be changed [Applause] all right let's keep the whistling and the yelling down please your applause will be sufficient our next candidate for vice president of the student council it's tracy wong [Applause] make a couple of ground rules right here i had hoped it wouldn't be necessary number one there will be no campaigning for any candidate or slate except those officially nominated i kind of got disgusted because well i didn't think it was right and plus you know i didn't know what to say next and i was wow is that clear to you all right you may proceed then um i i there's nothing else i want to say thank you [Applause] [Music] i was scared everybody knew i was the other person mr langston was talking to our last candidate his candidate for president of the student council matt cole matt [Applause] i'm speaking softly what i say i believe is right i think it's wrong for them to forbid me to talk about sure please just take your [Applause] feet please all right you have heard the speeches of all the candidates you may have an opportunity to vote for the candidates of your choice this afternoon during six hour class please do not vote for matt cole matt has disqualified himself not waste your votes this kid was so intent on ram running through this sure thing that he directly disobeyed me in front of the whole student body and disrupted the process of student elections now if i let this go by how am i supposed to run this school runner might help count the votes so i got a lot of votes anyway and you guys suspended yeah for two days second i think the suspension ought to be taken off matt's record i consider it very detrimental and substantially unfair to him i'm not willing to do that matt is a responsible person and he did what he did mr langston you forced matt into a confrontation no one forced matt into anything you forced him to back down on everything he stood for i consider that a confrontation mrs cole i'm not saying i did everything right here i'm saying that what i did i believed was right now if you wish i'm willing to take the whole thing and put it before the school board what if the school board decides against you well i wouldn't feel very good about it we would have to think out everything very carefully and decide if we want to take it any further yeah if the school board decides that next year we'll have slates and platforms i i'm skip alzheimer welcome to um our streaming event uh something we do we collect old 60 millimeter films and show them to folks like you via the internet um and live actually i did a screen last night at the alamo drafthouse in raleigh north carolina before we showed a bride of frankenstein we actually showed i showed some halloween films and some films about cereal because it was a monster cereal party so there was lots of um blueberry frankenberry and count chocula that we were serving up as i was showing serial commercials and some pretty good halloween fare anyway so that's if you live in the raleigh or in the triangle area north carolina you can find me and find me doing these events at different places um otherwise here i am i'm on the internet in your house um and uh tonight is one of those nights where i didn't have a theme that was percolating in me i'd usually do theme shows or i pull films that are based on a certain theme but uh i have all these films i have 25 000 films and um i've only seen a very small portion of them and so tonight was a let's pull some films that i haven't seen uh and i sometimes do that by collection because there's different uh sometimes nowadays what happens is i get a collection of films like 100 films or 200 films or 20 films and i kind of catalog them and put them together on one shelf or a series of shelves and so this is uh films that i got from raw and red cans and they're all from the i got them from university of south carolina but ultimately they were from the richland county uh school district one in columbia south carolina let's see on the can and um so these are a bunch of films that i got um probably last summer i think and i just have not had a chance to watch them so we're pulling some titles that i think are are interesting that i've never watched before and we're going to watch them together it's going to be like a premiere premiere of these films because chances are these films have not been shown um anywhere for 20 years it's longer so this first film is um it just says on the title it says you and i have no idea excuse me sometimes on a can somebody only gets part of the um title but this one just says you and um i do research on titles to see online to see if i can figure out roughly what they're about before i watch them but this i have no idea um because it's such a general title so here's you and i should say that um so the sound check i should actually play back files from a hard drive of things because i was busy setting up some other things i wanted to do a real sound check and play with some new software that i've been playing with but everything's going to be shown live on this telecine so i'll actually start the telecity and you can see that it's working and then i'll i don't i don't know i guess it's because we're two different people they always see things the same way i do that's his problem are you sure he sees everything the same way you do he does he does maybe he does that so you'll like him does it hurt your feelings when i call you fatty sometimes does it hurt your feelings when i call you skinny frankfurter not much a little you're not really skinny well you are kind of fat paul i am not i just got big bones how do you get big bones you buy them at the grocery store some people have them and some people don't usually the person's bones big enough to hold the person together that's all that i care about do you mind your freckles i used to how was it to have allergies i'm used to them but you had to think of a shop i hate shops i'm used to those how come all the questions i don't know i just wonder what it would be like if i were you instead of me what i like being you it has its good days and it's bad days sometimes i wonder what it would be like if i were somebody else if i were skinny or if i were a different color or if i had different color eyes or couldn't see at all you couldn't see the clouds i could remember them well this is important but if you never could see it all you couldn't remember what you never saw i guess i could imagine them is that like seeing i guess so and then if i said the cloud reminded me of a horse no one could really argue with me because they've known i've never seen a horse either or they could laugh at you some people do now i guess sometimes i wonder what it would be like if i were tall or poor or rich or old especially very old if y'all bent over and sick and crafted and hate children grandma is an audience of her crutches sick and hate children even when she doesn't feel well she still likes children well that's because she's grandma but what if you were grandma i wouldn't hate children how would you know i just know i wonder what it would be like if i'm a captain dinosaur and walk through a real waterfall yeah i see clouds me too you horse that's kinda like a pig sort of i always thought everybody saw things the same way they don't [Music] or even like to do the same thing no or even feel the same thing well that isn't a bad thing no [Music] can you fix your painting i guess i'll paint over it can i help you [Music] yeah [Music] i guess i wouldn't want mary for a brother why not because he doesn't believe in cat and dinosaur at least you try i see [Music] so [Music] holy cow um i'm trying to look up like what the point of that film was i mean i kind of get it but it kind of gets all over the place uh anybody have a guess i uh i was looking through some of my um to see because this one did not come with program notes so i really am not 100 sure what the deal is um it looks to be part of a series there was another film that was a boy's date journey through the day which um um has it it i don't know meanders just as much but there's no narration with that film um but wow it's pretty great i like when kids just kind of ramble on um and there's not a ham tested point this is more of an exploration um yeah and unfortunately there's no notes all it's all it has in here is a condition report that you can fill out if um if you got this from a library or from the library you can talk about if it's broken or needs to be fixed or you know got damaged um but uh yeah you i'm not sure i'm not sure what to tell you with that um that's that's why we watch these films right i saw somebody uh had posted it on youtube but again they didn't list really any information about it so who knows and i don't know if you notice i was addressing adjusting the color balance like a little bit i mean this is you can see it's i'm going rewind but this is what it was before so you saw how red it was and i tweaked it as we were watching it um i can do a little bit with color um while we're transferring it watching it but each film fades differently so yeah so there you go um yeah so that was great so if i did a show about brothers i would probably show this one or great insults man there's some good insults in there that did not involve curse words all right what do we got next again we are watching oh this one's great i don't know if you can see it it has a little smiley face on it um that says electronically inspected and i i used to have i don't know if you can see yeah there it is um i used to have a whole roll of these stickers um they're glorious and uh they came with this rti inspection machine which i accidentally dropped on my toe and i lost a toenail for a couple of months um but yeah the idea is that it uses uh little sensors to determine if there are splices or if there's breaks in the film or sprocket damage and it would publish a report so a library you'd check out a film from a library and you wouldn't rewind it and then they would rewind it and would be able to determine if there was any repairs that needed to be made or if they had to like charge whoever checked it out for wrecking it all right this next film is office practice working with others um over the years i've done uh different types of screenings where i'm gonna type this in as i talk to you about this uh about how to work with others and how to find a job um but the ones about like how to what you once you have the job how do you keep that job and how do you work with others is um those types of films i really like and of course uh office and workplace safety films are great with others all right so here's um office practice working with others enjoy [Music] millions of people work in offices to succeed to get the most out of a job in an office you need to understand the importance of working well with others it's called human relations getting along with other people is extremely important it helps establish understanding and cooperation language and behavior can create bridges of success between people or gaps gaps of failure [Music] living and working with others successfully depends on building bridges of communication between people and the success of any business depends on those bridges too on the ability of employees to get along with customers for instance anita valdez understands that she works at the information desk in a large bank on the third floor and mr baker will be glad to help you with it thank you you're welcome thank you good morning may i help you yes we'd like to open an account a checking account oh fine the new accounts department is right over there and she pays me to grab help thank you thank you if she weren't able to get along with people she wouldn't be able to do a good job in many cases she's the first person on the staff that customers meet the bank depends on her to present a friendly helpful image to everyone who asks for information and she does a good job she likes people and really wants to help them she works primarily with customers of the bank but she has another responsibility the responsibility of getting along well with her co-workers may i help you yes i'm looking for ron mark he said he began me but i can't seem to find him have you seen him no not since early this morning want me to page him well i guess i'll try his death again i'll tell you what if he isn't there this time i'll call you finish the pages he needs his material and he said immediately well thank you anita you're welcome like anita judy realizes the importance of human relations getting along with others judy may have several things on her mind but she's always cheerful and friendly to her getting along with her co-workers makes her job more fun she's right but another important thing about it is that her attitude makes a vast difference in her ability to do her job well as one of several secretaries in the public relations department of the bank judy realizes that she's a member of a team other people depend on her and she depends on them where have you been what took so long i was just looking for you knew i had to have these reports and i told you i had to have them immediately now when i say immediately i mean now not tomorrow not the day after now ron marks as an assistant to the department head he wants to advance but success doesn't depend entirely on ability and ron will never make it until he learns to respect the feelings of others a fellow like ron can have a bad effect on the morale of others sometimes causing gaps between them i'm sorry there's something wrong no nothing what can i do for you well we need to proofread some of the copy of the annual report and i was wondering if you had time to help me with it but gaps can be bridged with effort understanding a sincere desire to get along well with others coordination of work is extremely important in an office in this case judy and terry are proofreading material which will be included in the bank's annual report every detail must be checked and communication between judy and terry is essential their job is important not only to them but to the bank to the customers who will receive the report and to the typographers and printers who will prepare it there it's all finished why thank you judy sure well we need that copy immediately the printer's here and i want to go over everything with him you're holding things up what shall i tell him i'll finish john here you are any uh any errors just a few most of them are type of graphical errors but there's one place that should be checked [Applause] [Music] working with others can be a great pleasure and that can happen when we think of people as individuals when we show appreciation for their work ron doesn't need to demand if he needs help from terry or judy he can ask and it can be given with respect fortunately judy realizes that simple courtesy to others is basic to good human relations there's a large space between the first and second and the third almost she showed it with terry and with ron cooperation is a plus for everyone situation there should be comments and a period at the end that's all i'll have this fixed right away and it doesn't take any time at all to thank someone for something ron should realize that judy and terry would like to feel that their work is appreciated hi ron good afternoon hello i've been over these proofs with a couple of the girls i think we've got a couple of things to discuss in some detail shall we get at it fine yeah working with others doesn't always mean just those within your own office these proofs are really a mess oh well let's see tony rocco represents the printing company which is producing the annual report for the bank he isn't a bank employee but he and ron must work together closely on the project at times it is necessary to point out mistakes but it doesn't have to be done with rudeness ron's attitude doesn't help build bridges of communication with tony that's ridiculous really these errors are minor ron you've marked everything clearly and that one spot can be fixed very easily here let me show you and tony's reaction to ron's criticism is important fortunately he works well with people and he appreciates helpful criticism in italics this way saving one page and being on the one page on the same page it can be easily read fine there is one other major place up here toward the end we have a page of columns now the first is corporate names ron may not know it but tony is helping him first he is solving a problem the proof sheets but also he is presenting a good example to ron he's making an effort rather than being upset with ron he continues to show him that he wants to get along with him it takes more effort with some than with others but often such effort will bring about a reciprocal effort in the other person and so you see ron in this way we can take care of everything and at no extra cost to you well that's fine i was a little worried can you still meet our deadline sure now that we've checked it out together everything is very clear well i guess things we do or say to people have an effect on thanks ron i'll be in touch with you all right but ron should be thanking tony tony's behavior showed a sensitivity toward him a feeling for good human relations he's helped build a bridge of communication and understanding between them busy well yes but what is it ron the annual report i just gave it department head and while ron might have felt that he was impressing his boss he didn't really help their relationship with his abrupt interruption he didn't consider the other person's feelings ron didn't take time to consider the normal custom of being courteous a possible extension of what the savings account department would do why mr anything else for now no that's it susan thanks i think to the printer probably yes but i just wanted to mention that but judy and terry were an awfully big help and tony too the printing salesman i understand ron cooperation means a lot doesn't it is that it well i just got this at all yes and thanks mr bengal well thanks to you ron getting along with yourself is the first step in getting along with others a sensitivity to people's needs a respect for them as individuals and an appreciation for their work these are ways to good human relations in an office and the ability to work with other people can determine failure or success right ron occasionally you get to see something cool like um these color bars at the end um i've shown a couple of uh what we call china girls or leader ladies which is often spliced into countdowns and at the beginning the films are the end of films this is what color film processors would look at to make sure that the processing was correct um and this is an example of that and you can tell i'm way off as far as the color correction i did like the yellow i think is is kind of greenish um but you know i'm color correcting on the fly so it's not quite not quite what you want but you know what are you gonna do it's a freeze it's a free show so i've been uh looking in some of my guides my av guides to see like that you film i'm still trying to figure out like what's a description of that i mean this last film uh office practice working with others is pretty uh self-explanatory um for ron that guy just clueless until the end of course um there's others in that series and they're narrated by rod serling of twilight zone fame and uh it's kind of hilarious because let me take these glasses off the glare is driving me nuts um it's kind of hilarious because you know rod sterling at the time was he wasn't really working this was the way he made money and uh did great voice over work but i think kind of forgot that his voice carries this his weight his ominous weight that something absolutely horrible and possibly supernatural might happen so you know this whole thing about applying for a job and rod sterling is narrating how that process is going to take place at any point any of those people are gonna be revealed to be a robot or from another planet or somebody's gonna be sucked into another dimension where you know they never existed or they're gonna be turned into a little doll you know who knows um of course that never happens but it's it's funny i did a show called rod surly makes a mortgage payment and it's basically there it's voice over work that he did after uh twilight zone including for a hardwood veneer company it's called patterns of time very strange i think we just saw a commercial that he did for radio shack which of course is truly awesome all right well what do we get uh as a reminder i don't know what time is it what time is it and it's 8 41. um skip alzheimer i collect old films and show them to folks like you either live or via the internet um that's what we got here that's that's interesting all right balance of life and the space age there we go i think we are past the space age the information age so maybe we can go back and assess how we did i have no idea what this film is again that's why we're watching them uh when when you have more than 10 000 of something you know it takes a lot of work to figure out what everything is to watch everything or listen to everything or read everything and so i do these monthly screenings to watch these things and if i'm going to watch them you should watch them too um balance of life and um well you can't see like this is a telecini and i'm actually um lacing or threading the film up and watching it live using equipment that i paid way too much not bfa interesting okay all right let's see what this is uh okay so as i said um tonight's screening is not really a theme as much as uh a bunch of films that i have not seen which there are several there is probably um i don't know i've probably seen six thousand films so it's 19 000 that i have not seen um so here we go we're gonna watch uh four or five six tonight and then we'll knock those off the list but unfortunately in the meantime i will probably acquire six more films by the next time that we do a screening thing or you know at one point was an averaging one a day so um i can't keep up but hey there's worse problems in the world so anyways here is uh um balance of life and the space age enjoy [Music] what do men and animals need to stay alive one important need is oxygen there is oxygen in the air we breed [Music] food is another need animals and men get food from plants or they may get food from other animals which in turn eat plants a third basic need is water water food and oxygen these are the things men and animals need in order to live all of them are generously supplied us by the earth and the atmosphere around it but now man has found a way to leave here astronauts journey into space away from the earth his natural home an astronaut will not find the things he needs to live to keep alive in space he must take with him all of the oxygen food and water his body will require the length of his journey will be limited by the amount of these necessities his spaceship will carry but if man is to explore the distant planets if he is to build a base on the moon he will need much larger supplies of oxygen food and water than he can hope to carry from the earth [Music] is there any way that life necessities can be supplied to an astronaut for a space journey lasting several months or perhaps years may find an answer if we understand how these basic necessities are provided on earth let's examine one small part of the earth's surface a freshwater pond the fish that live in the pond like other animals must have food water and oxygen in order to stay alive they find these necessities in the pond an important source of food for these fish are the green plants that live in the water [Music] plants also produce oxygen in bright sunlight bubbles of oxygen can be seen on their leaves or rising from them the brighter the light the more oxygen they produce light is needed by plants plants also need a gas called carbon dioxide in the pond plants can get carbon dioxide from the fish fish take in the oxygen given off by the plants their gills separate the oxygen from the water and as the fish use the oxygen they give off carbon dioxide the plants in turn use the carbon dioxide to grow forming more oxygen and more food for the fish so the process is repeated indefinitely a kind of circle or cycle in which plant supports animal and animals supports plants such a community of living things each depending upon the other is called a balanced system [Music] we too are a part of a balanced system all the living things on earth form a great and complex balanced system animals give off carbon dioxide green plants use carbon dioxide to produce oxygen and many kinds of food on earth plants and animals depend upon each other they support each other just as to the fish and the plants in the pond if we take a fish out of its pond can we keep it alive we can as long as we give it the things it needs to live water oxygen and food as these are used up we can of course add more but can we instead create in the tank a balanced system that will work like the one in the pond green plants will grow in the tank given enough light they will supply the fish with food as the fish takes in oxygen it gives off carbon dioxide which the plants need to continue growing as the plants use the carbon dioxide they release oxygen needed by the fish with the proper balance between plants and animals the tank can even be closed up nothing more need be added plants and fish will supply for each other all the basic needs of life we have made a small balanced system can a balanced system be created to keep a man alive inside a spacecraft scientists in this laboratory believe it can they are experimenting with a water plant called chlorella plants are so tiny they can be seen only as a green color in the water if the water is removed a green paste remains oxygen bubbles from if we examine a bit of this paste under a microscope we can see that it is made of tiny individual chlorella plants millions of these can live in a test tube like all green plants they require light in order to grow in a spaceship or on a moon base chlorella could be grown in tremendous numbers since they are green plants they need carbon dioxide they give off oxygen men need oxygen they breathe out carbon dioxide by placing a man in a sealed chamber scientists can find out the amount of chlorella needed to supply enough oxygen to keep the man alive and they can find out whether the man breathes out enough carbon dioxide to keep the plants alive scientists have also found that chlorella can be made into a nourishing food they have made chlorella flower from this several kinds of food have been prepared tests have shown that chlorella muffins are not only healthful but good tasting as well so by using a plant like chlorella it may be possible to create a balanced system that will keep an astronaut alive in a space for long periods of time just as the fish can stay alive in its sealed aquarium so the further exploration of space depends in part upon our understanding of life on earth [Music] and the great balance system of which we are a part and upon which all life depends so i'll try to give you a close-up view of what's happening here let's see so there's a take up reel speed so there's the uh the sound head is right there and there is the gate the film is going through and there's a led that pulses um and there's the take-up reel that i'm rewinding from so my feeling is that that last film was trying to capitalize on the wrong way uh capitalize on the uh space age interest astronauts focusing on [Music] yeah let's do that uh interested in astronauts uh in the 60s and um this is just a really super annoying it's not focusing um so i i you know i think they they certainly used the concepts of you know life what it what is life and how does it um what does life need to exist and all that but they threw in the gimmick of astronauts because that was sexy um i've certainly seen other films use gimmicks like that sometimes they use things like puppets or they use popeye or they use you know winning poo or they use uh other uh other things let's kind of get their points across um yeah that one that one fits a little bit better great film though all right what's next all the self there is man some of these titles are so compelling have no idea what we're about to watch um i don't know it could be a film about emotions it could be a weird promotional film i like doing these grab bag shows uh for that very reason um but you don't know you have no idea what you're gonna watch what you're gonna see somebody could cheat and look it up but um i'm not gonna do that i'm not gonna cheat i'm just gonna let it run and we'll see how this the interesting thing is that these films that we're watching i was looking them up in my database and they're not even in there i haven't even cataloged these films and entered them into the database so these are on top of the 25 000 films i have i have another 100 or so that haven't even been cataloged yet what a life i'll get my intern to work on the next this week maybe all right all right here we go all the self there is enjoy humanizing and personalizing class experiences to meet the needs of youth today who are asking who am i and where do i fit in what are the contributions of physical education to all the self there is children love activity and they learn through exploring movement patterns like curling stretching and twisting basis for flexion extension rotation assuming definite body shapes [Music] discovery of what moves where it moves and how it moves the concept of balance is explored as it relates to body awareness in space [Music] space-time relationships are established within various learning environments that are fun and different [Music] children progress through developmental levels of movement experiences as a background for hand eye coordination [Music] foot eye coordination both perceptual motor skills [Music] tracking a ball and catching it just at the right moment [Music] it's fun to cope with an ever-changing environment meaningful movement experiences provide the setting and the freedom to accept a challenge solve a problem [Music] succeed in self-testing activities [Music] there are no failures no competition at this point [Music] just the glow of satisfaction [Music] earlier rhythmic activities have provided the basis for introduction to simple folk and square dances to lively music and intricate step patterns music and movement the language of youth creativity finds an expressive outlet in modern dance satisfying all forms of non-verbal communication for dance is the medium for the silent language [Laughter] in the new physical education emphasis is on the individual and the achievement of self-confidence to experience what the total self can do and with total competence [Music] adolescents require the types of movement patterns that help improve the typical clumsy coordination perception practice and poise are enhanced when sound principles of movement are understood and put into action a keen awareness of self and space control and perfection of form the new physical education is built on a concept of totality the outcome a knowing feeling moving human being [Music] a thrill perhaps a peak experience all helping to build body image concepts the very core of a positive self-concept [Music] adolescent boys and girls are very much aware of body image and need a program of self-improvement hopefully a smoother transition to adulthood ropes and rhythms a fun way to physiological fitness and habits for a lifetime the kind of health insurance one can't buy [Music] running is one of the best all-round cardiovascular endurance activities jogging and running for fun and for a lifetime begins in physical education a test of fitness to carry another person five miles to safety objective accomplished with accolades and awards a tribute to personal achievement [Music] judo the ancient art of self-defense is popular in the new physical education and is practiced by boys and girls of all ages and sizes it is physically demanding and promotes agility coordination and personal discipline judo and karate help push back the barriers of fatigue and it teaches self-protection a significant factor in our society today [Music] ever popular are the team sports in junior high school all emphasizing cooperation and keen competition respect for rules and regulations must be learned and practiced team sports provide the laboratory for self-discipline that heeds freedom co-ed competition reflects the spirit of the new physical education spectator writers unfortunately the favorite american pastime and the all too familiar frantic round of golf played from a golf cart they should be replaced by the new look in physical activity which encourages a wide variety of lifetime sports lifetime sports skills are introduced in physical education classes and then individuals are encouraged to pursue the sports in the beautiful outdoors laboratories [Music] the return to nature personifies the lifestyle of young people all over the world [Music] bicycling has been one of the most popular leisure time sports and groups enjoy the bike paths along the riverbanks in the natural environment the new physical education has encouraged teaching skills in scuba spelunking mountaineering and rock climbing there are sports that produce a feeling of loss of balance or a thrill called vertigo sports they fascinate a large segment of our society a positive substitute for the preoccupation with the drug world boating and aquatic activities are more popular than ever and learning safety habits has become a necessary part of the new curriculum who am i perhaps this is where the answers lie in the quiet escape from a pressurized society in the freedom to come to terms with one's own self-identity [Music] the new approach to physical education for modern living features early discovery and exploration of all types of movement experiences provides early perceptual motor development [Music] nurtures the careful growth of a positive self-concept and persuades society that a physically active life from preschool to college is an absolute necessity in order to enjoy a vigorous healthy happy life it takes a lifetime for the full realization of the contributions of the new physical education to all the self there is the beginning i love it it's like calling your business unlimited so uh somebody questioned um who is this film made for um because it does seem to to span a lot of different age groups like if it was if it was made for kids it would specifically talk about that target age group i feel um this is conjecture of course um but you know i've seen i've seen an educational film in my life so i have an idea i've seen a couple thousand several thousand anyways um this is my guess is i would think that this was shown to school boards and parent teacher organizations and also shown to teachers um as a way to get support uh and talk about the new physical education approach instead of just going out and doing jumping jacks and whatever you know here are other ways you know we have a crisis our kids are fat and listless and don't have energy they don't exercise anymore they don't go play anymore because they just didn't watch television um so they're obese uh so you know what can we do and so this is pep pepe is the what this was short for but this is an opportunity to engage kids and get them interested in a lifetime of of uh physical fitness um because you want to do this now when they're kids so that when they're adults then they will continue being physically active and they'll have that as part of their lifestyle uh in a positive way how did that work out for us all um you know this was this came out uh according to worldcat this came out in 73 um and i think it's great somebody did notice that they missed golf and they talked about spectatoritis which i think is hilarious um i'm writing notes here you know you see me like my chest yeah this is i am just i like aspects of this webcam but some of it's just pain in the butt um anyways so this film i think was meant to be shown this was part like an introductory part of like hey there's this new program that we're going to introduce new curriculum that's related to physical education and either garnering support for it from students and or from students teachers parents or from school boards to fund these these things or you know whatever any any opportunity to get support instead of just having kids go out and run laps um i love films like that so 73 you know what is that 46 years ago i certainly remember i i mentioned in the comments that uh body awareness films and spatial awareness films um there's a whole series of those that came out uh in the late 60s or early 60s to 70s and uh there are all these things like i don't know if you like when i was in school the big thing that we did that was kind of related to this was with parachute like everybody all the kids held on to a part of a parachute and they're all making it go up and down and they go underneath it and then they put bounce balls on it and you know lots of fun i remember the insanity of that during recess is playing with a parachute and that's getting kids excited and moving using their bodies and doing all these things so anyways all these body awareness films they have kids like with ropes and in bags like rolling around and making all these weird sounds and it's making all these weird body gestures and it's pretty crazy when it's taken out of context but it makes sense it's all about getting kids to be active and to explore their bodies and the relationship with the world so that they can discover things like balance and they can discover things like um you know their strength and you know how their body moves in different situations and all that stuff it's important stuff and normally with play that's when you figure it out but you know as we make it harder and harder for kids to play physically play then they don't have those explorations so of freaked out so we are going to manually get it right um i love awkward puppets and those are seriously awkward puppets i think we were many of us were uh treated to some nice puppets uh thanks to jim henson and his people but there's lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of other puppets out there that just don't do well don't hold up and um i would say that these are probably examples of that i've done uh puppet shows shows featuring puppets and what i found is like some audience members and adults get really freaked out they do not like puppets um one of my favorite series of films is actually a marionette um features a marionette and it's piro i've shown those over the years a lot of people do not like pirro actually people i respect in in other regards for some reason just are freaked out by piro which is hilarious all right there we go now we're rewinding so technology oops i just turned on the light uh anyways um yeah that was feelings don't stay mad and it's an exploration of what happens when somebody gets a kid gets mad like do you want to continue being mad or do you want to move past it and yes somebody commented don't take nice things to school because they will be ruined first-hand knowledge of that of course many times took things that did not make it past the school bus ride that film itself was also i think from 1972-73 um so we seem to be dabbling a little bit in the 70s early 70s which is fine 46 years ago right we got some more films um this one see what time it is what time is it uh maybe i'll leave this to you guys to decide i've got two films to choose from three films to choose from hey how about that what we'll do is uh um how will we do this what i'll do is i'll tell you the three films uh and the titles uh you chime in and comment which one you want to see and then i'll run a short commercial or series of films or something and by the end of that then i'll check and see like which which one won and then we'll watch that one is that fair we've done that in the past um but i usually announce it before i show the last film so there is noah's journey the dinosaur who wondered who he was and mankind and the see something that i have on the hard drive i hooked up a hard drive that has like 700 of the films that i've digitized already um just for another experiment so uh we'll watch astrovac uh and by the end of astrovac then um you decide and i'll do a tally and we'll figure it out so the choices again know his journey the dinosaur who wondered who he was and mankind and the atom so here's astrovac enjoy i should say that astrovac is silent it's a silent film and is really crazy so i'm going to turn off this microphone and like i said it's silent enjoy and vote in the comments thank you wasn't that film great astrovac that was an ebay purchase and uh i think some engineer drew a short straw to show off their technology to um nasa about hey astronauts need to bathe in space but there's no way to have a shower or a bath so how can we keep our astronauts clean and this was their solution i don't think it was actually used but it is great and that engineer down into the skivvies and took one from the team so um let's see if things changed nope um so believe it or not most people wanted to see they didn't want to see a dinosaur who didn't know who he was what his self-doubt was most people voted for mankind and the atom which is surprising um you didn't want to see noah's journey don't worry we'll watch them at some point fret not this one has another status report quality of this film and kindly adam this could be no idea who made this film i want to say disney but i don't think it is we'll see i haven't again i have not looked it up um before we get started with this i universal hope of all present that no american citizen will ever witness it on united states soil again the light of many suns the tremendous ball of fire the shock and sound and the formation of boiling clouds were all beyond human experience three weeks later on a pacific isle an american b-29 takes on a single atomic bomb its code name fat man the crew is well briefed about their target and their cargo and on the morning of august 6 the aircraft takes off for its rendezvous with history [Music] the mission underscores dramatically the words of h.g wells human history is more and more a race between education and catastrophe target city is hiroshima population 310 000. under a clear summer sky hiroshima cannot know nor dream that its tragedy will mark the beginning of the end of world war ii 8 15 a.m the bombardier releases his deadly atomic device [Music] [Music] in the twinkling of an eye seventy thousand people are killed and the heart of the city is leveled to the ground [Music] weeks pass before the dazed survivors in the stricken city know what has happened to them [Music] asylum president truman announces the atomic attack a short time ago an american airplane dropped one bomb on hiroshima and destroyed its usefulness to the enemy that bomb has more power than twenty 000 tons of tnt it is an atomic bomb it is a harnessing of the basic power of the universe the force from which the sun draws his power has been loosed against those who brought war to the far east a second bomb is dropped on nagasaki and on august 14th japan surrenders after the war's end bernard baruch comes before the united nations with an american proposal for international atomic control this is a treaty that is meant to be kept this is to be a program from which for which the world has striven through all recorded history and even before or man in his soul is peaceful and life-loving deep inside of him he knows that he can live in security only by the force of law and never by the law of course the u.s treaty is based on strict enforcement international inspections and no veto [Music] andre grumyko speaking for the soviet union rejects the terms of the american proposal thus begins more than 18 years of debate and disagreement between the two great powers on the control of nuclear weapons the atomic dilemma becomes the challenge of our times and a ghost town in the nevada desert called survival city emphasizes the consequences of failure houses are populated with life-like models and stocked with real food civil defense officials have erected buildings of all types to learn of their capability to withstand an atomic blast [Music] troops are moved into trenches within a mile of the nuclear device closer than anyone has ever been to the site of an atomic explosion tension mounts as the gi's wait out the countdown [Music] [Applause] one [Music] sights and sounds of the atomic blast light up the sky and rumble across the desert [Music] spectacular motion pictures record firsthand for the first time the incredible destructive power of nuclear energy [Music] in soviet russia in the years after world war ii the challenge of the atomic age is the challenge to build as quickly as possible a successful nuclear device with the aid of german scientists captured during the war held as prisoners in russia with atomic secrets smuggled out of the free world by soviet spies the top priority project moves surely steadily toward fulfillment 1946 47 48 the years the months the days dwindle down [Applause] 1949 russia becomes an atomic power america's monopoly is ended the next nuclear breakthrough takes place five years later on an obscure island named alluja lab in the far pacific u.s scientists place history's first hydrogen bomb nicknamed mike in a tar paper shack remote control cameras are set up to film the explosion of a device with a power of 20 million tons of dnt the closest ship is five miles away [Applause] here is power strong enough to wipe the island of the lujan from the face of the earth great enough to provide civilization with an abundant and undreamed of better life addressing the united nations president eisenhower makes america's position very clear my country wants to be constructive not destructive it wants agreements not wars among nations it wants itself to live in freedom and in the confidence that the people of every other nation enjoy equally the right of choosing their own way of life so my country's purpose is to help us move out of the dark chamber of horrors into the light to find a way by which the minds of men the hopes of men the souls of men everywhere can move forward toward peace and happiness and well-being the united states pledges before you and therefore before the world its determination to help solve the fearful atomic dilemma to devote its entire heart and mind to find the way by which the miraculous inventiveness of man shall not be dedicated to his death but consecrated to his life the united states supports president eisenhower's words with deeds working through the united nations america makes available uranium and fashionable material for peaceful purposes dozens of countries are given the atomic keys that open the doors to dynamic advances in the fields of medicine and industry [Music] in countless ways the miracle and the might of nuclear energy touches and enriches the lives of growing numbers of people around the world atomic energy is harnessed to propel ships supply power advanced medical research but not all research is peaceful england enters the nuclear arms race and follows a familiar path [Music] in 1957 great britain becomes the world's third nuclear power the fourth is france which achieves its first nuclear explosion in 1960 [Music] the royal for france says charles de gaulle from this moment on she is stronger prouder a great nation in every respect [Music] and then thunder out of asia communist china takes its place among the nuclear nations of the world while the un struggles to find some effective formula for disarmament the atomic powers carry out more than 200 nuclear tests in four years finally in 1958 andre gromico representing russia and avril harriman the united states reach agreement on a moratorium in atomic tests it will last three years [Music] in 1961 russia breaks the moratorium and explodes a superbomb equal in power to 50 million tons of tnt hadley stevenson american ambassador to the united nations rebukes the soviet union for its action as he said he would mr khrushchev has exploded his giant bomb in cynical disregard of the united nations by this act the soviet union have added injury to insult they broke the moratorium on nuclear weapons testing they have raised atmospheric pollution to new heights they have started a new race for more deadly weapons and so a new round of testing begins an underground explosion reveals a dramatically different look at atomic power once again man and his world live in the ominous shadows of nuclear fallout then suddenly in 1963 russia proposes negotiations on a partial nuclear test ban treaty and in one week premier nikita khrushchev accepts an agreement that his country has blocked for 18 years the treaty outlaws any nuclear explosion in the atmosphere outer space or underwater secretary of state dean rusk signs the historic document for the united states andre gromico a veteran of disarmament negotiations represents russia and alex douglas hume england later more than 80 countries will sign the fact but france and communist china will not still the treaty is considered a step toward peace a step away from war in 1967 when alexei kosiken comes to the united states and travels to glassboro new jersey to meet president johnson the foundation is laid for a second step on the road to nuclear disarmament at the holly bush summit conference the leaders reached tentative agreement on a new treaty to halt the spread of nuclear weapons the proposal would seek to perpetuate the present nuclear weapons monopoly of the united states russia england france and communist china it is the one area of agreement between the president and the premier [Music] the official proposal is submitted to the 17 nation disarmament conference at geneva it requires all nuclear powers to promise never to hand such weapons or weapons know-how to any other power and nations with no atomic weapons must promise never to manufacture or acquire them as negotiations proceed mankind watches and remembers perhaps the prophetic words of president kennedy never have the nations of the world had so much to lose or so much to gain together we shall save our planet or together we shall perish in its flames save it we can and save it we must and then shall we earn the eternal thanks of mankind and as peacemakers the eternal blessing of god atoms for peace or atoms for war the challenge remains in the atomic age [Music]
