Description: This color educational film is about how a newspaper is made in a community. It was made by Gary Goldsmith Films in cooperation with the Los Angeles Times. This was made in 1959 since the Dodgers/Cardinals home opener was this year and is shown in the film on the sports page. A room of reporters type at their typewriters. An editor assigns a reporter and a photographer to a job. On an airport tarmac, a reporter interviews a man while the photographer takes pictures. A baby elephant is taken off a plane and brought down a ramp. The elephant is sitting off the plane. A picture of the elephant is developed. A United Press teletype machine prints out a story. A reporter takes it and reads it. A picture of the baby elephant arrives via another machine sent from India. The reporter puts paper in his typewriter. He starts typing (:06-2:38). The reporter works. Other reporters at their desks write other stories. A secretary opens the mail - it's a comic strip. The reporter is done with his story and ands it as the photographer hands his picture of the elephant. One editor hands it out to the makeup editor. The makeup editor does a newspaper breakdown on a piece of paper. A copyreader checks the stories for errors. The finished story is rolled up and placed into a tube. The tube is then put into a pipe that sends it to another part of the building. In the composing room, the tube is opened and the story prepared for printing. A machine sets the story in metal type, one line at a time. After it is set in type a copy is made in the printing press. Another man then compares the printed story versus the original story (2:39-5:46). The story is handed back to the man and ready to be printed. Hands move the picture, the story, and various printing press objects into a flat form. A mat is laid over the hard metal type. A roller presses the type against the mat. The mat is an exact copy of the page. The mat is baked in a curved form. Men put metal into a machine. The metal is a plate - a copy of the page. Rolls of paper are carried by a forklift. Paper is positioned into a machine. Yellow ink is poured into a bucket. Plates are sent to the printing room. The plate is locked into place. Presses start to roll. The yellow ink was for a yellow sun on the page. The machine rolls on as paper whizzes by (5:47-9:13). Black ink is printing onto the page now. The press slides down. Finished paper is cut together, picked up, and reviewed. The printing press moves very fast. Pressmen check the machines to make sure they print correctly. Printed papers are bundled for delivery. Paper bundles go down a chute. Next they are on a truck. They are passed from the person in a truck to a newsstand. A boy delivers newspapers on his bicycle. He tosses one at a little girl and then onto a lawn. A man reads the paper in a barbershop chair. Two boys read the sports section in a car near a baseball field. Closeup on the newspaper: "Dodgers face Cards in Home Opener" (9:13-11:13). A woman looks at a newspaper advertisement. She then talks with a salesman about a dryer in a store. A little girl reads the paper with her mom - close on a picture of a baby elephant. A boy gives a newspaper to an editor at his desk. He walks through the newsroom with his paper (11:14-11:56). End credits (11:57-12:03).

[Music] hi they a baby elephant named gylmar is arriving at our Airport I assign a reporter to get all the important facts and to write the story Jomar is coming from India to his new home in our zoo I also assign a news photographer to take pictures the reporter and photographer will work together as a team the reporter questions the man from the zoo he takes careful notes on everything he hears and sees meanwhile the photographer is doing his job in the newspaper darkroom the photographer prints his best picture in our newspaper library the reporter looks up material about elephants we have thousands of clippings and photographs on file hear a story about Joe Mars home in India is coming over this teletype machine the teletype receives news from all over the world this machine receives pictures from far away here is Joe Mar with his mother in India a copy boy delivers the teletype story about Joe Moore now the reporter has all the facts he's ready to write his story he puts the most important facts in the first few sentences then he adds the interesting details while a reporter is writing his story other people are also working there are other reporters writing about the city schools or the movies or baseball or what the president did today there are secretaries this secretary has just received one of today's Onex in the mail the cartoonist who drew it sells his comic strip to many different papers the baby elephants story is done the photograph and story are brought to my desk I approve them and pass them to the makeup editor the makeup editor plans the pages of the paper he blocks out each page on a special form this is the plan for page 10 the Jomar story will go in the upper corner in the lower corner will go the ad for the closedrier the copy reader checks the words and the spelling just as you check the stories you write then he writes a headline a title for the story gylmar is here now Joe Morris story is ready to go into the paper it shoots through these tubes to another part of the building here in the composing room the story will be prepared for printing this Linotype machine sets the story in metal type as the operator touches the keys the machine forms lines of type one line at a time [Applause] after the story is set in type a copy is made on a small printing press [Applause] then the printed story is checked against the original story to make certain that there are no mistakes now Joe Mars story is ready to be set into page 10 this makeup man follows the page plan drawn up by the makeup editor he slips Joe Mars story into the space planned for it next to the story he fits the photograph the Sun heat ad is in the lower corner page 10 is complete but a flat form will not fit on the big rollers of the printing press the page must be changed to a curved form a sheet of soft cardboard like material called a mat is laid over the hard metal type a roller presses the type into the mat the mat is now an exact copy of the page now the mat is baked into a curved form the mat comes out hard and tough it has to be tough because this machine pours hot liquid metal against it the metal quickly hardens into a perfect copy of page ten only now it is a curved plate ready to go to the press room in the press room preparations for printing have begun the rolls of paper are brought in printing a newspaper is a big job the rolls of paper weigh almost a ton and the ink comes in buckets this yellow ink is for the Sun heat at the plates come to the pressroom on special tracks page 10 is here [Applause] it is locked into place on the press warning light the presses are starting to roll the presses rolls slowly at first so the press men can make sure everything is working properly this plate is printing the yellow Sun then the black part of page 10 is printed over it the press also folds the papers and it cuts them apart each page is carefully inspected all right full speed ahead [Music] the press men checked the machines constantly the printed papers are bundled for delivery [Music] they go down the chute to the delivery trucks [Music] newspapers are sold on the streets newspapers are delivered to homes and they are read everywhere some people read about politics some are interested in sports some buy things that are advertised [Music] and some will plan to visit Jomar at the zoo when the day ends the copy boy leaves my paper I like my job helping to bring the news to our community
