Description: Teaching Film Custodians abridged classroom version of a Cavalcade of America television series episode, "A Medal for Miss Walker" (season 3, episode 9), which originally aired December 14th, 1954 on ABC-TV. A biographical account of the wartime medical service of Dr. Mary Walker, who was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for her courageous work as a civilian surgeon among Federal troops during the Civil War. This film relays the efforts of Mary Walker to be commissioned as an Army surgeon for the Union Army, her rejection, and her successful appeal to President Lincoln. Dr. Walker is dispatched as a civilian surgeon on contract to the Army of the West where her field hospital is captured by Confederate troops. She remains with her patients until they have all been successfully treated. In 1866 Secretary of War Stanton conferred the Medal of Honor upon Dr. Walker for heroism under fire and devotion to duty.
