A Little Girl Won't Eat Breakfast. The Reason Why Will Break Your Heart.

Description:

It starts as a simple question: why won't Cathy eat breakfast?
Maybe she doesn't like the food. Maybe she's not hungry. Simple enough, right?
But the more the interviewer digs — into her food preferences, her home life, her mother's early work schedule, the siblings she doesn't have — the more you realize this was never really about breakfast. And the more Cathy retreats, the more the camera catches something the filmmakers may not have fully intended: a little girl carrying a weight that nobody has quite found the right words for yet.
This vintage child psychology film is a fascinating and quietly devastating time capsule — a window into how adults of the era tried to understand children's emotional lives, armed with the best tools they had, which weren't always quite enough.
Cathy never really answers the question. But by the end, you understand it completely.

[music] >> Cathy. Cathy. Hi. Is it okay if we ask questions? Well, we hear that you [music] never eat breakfast. Is it true? How come? Is it that you're not getting the kind of cereal you want? No? Maybe you're missing some of the fruit you'd like. What about some bacon and eggs? What about some No, huh? Oh, I know. I bet you're getting tired of the usual breakfast fare. You want something different. None of those appeal to you, huh? What if you could have anything you want? You're making me sick. Okay, okay. So, it's not the kind of food. Maybe you have some family problem. That's it, isn't it? You have a mother who Cathy, you know how much time it takes me to make breakfast. I get up early just to be sure you'll have the right food. My mother's not home right now. She's gone to work already. Okay. Some other problem. Your brothers and sisters, they fight at the table. It makes you upset. I don't have any brothers or sisters. Well, then, what is it? Could it be that you just don't have food? Your dad is gone and your mother works to make ends meet and all you have in the kitchen are a few crusts of bread.
