transportation a vital bustling industry it moves the things America needs when and where they're needed by truck railroad ship or plane across town across the continent or across the world rama tip and grows with it today more than 5 million people are employed in transportation thousands more will be needed in the years to come and you can become a part of this exciting industry and prepare for a well-paying future by enlisting in the United States Army for duty at Fort Eustis Virginia the Army's transportation center choose yourself a career and make it a career that moves well i drive-a do staff and a five time we've got a five-ton tractor-trailers ten-time tractor-trailers then some of the other companies have ten ton cranes big ten ton forklift and dozers without transportation the army couldn't have possibly because we move everything we get everything to where it has to be at a certain time without transportation army couldn't function I get into transportation because I like driving trucks I drove trucks ever since I was old enough to drive and I'm still driving trucks I really enjoy it so this is where I belong each individual's assigned to a truck and I'm a responsible for my truck everything that's done on it that i can do is done by me alone and nobody else I can I want to continue in trucking and this kind of experience with these big trucks is just what I need because I plan on being a driving a big rig when i get out of service you may not believe this but i'm an army truck driver in fact i'm the first female to be qualified to drive a five-time tractor trailer at Fort Eustis not really women's lib it having my own job kicking myself out different person having a different identity than most people it's a lot of fun when I first started in training a truck driver they were all very doubtful they didn't think I could drive because I was female and I get fooled a lot of them I came out pretty close to the top of my class this is the never sail a unique mock-up ship used by the transportation school to train and turn out expert cargo specialists the modern facilities at Fort Eustis are designed to give a man a skill that's in demand in the Army or in civilian transportation the biggest factor here is to gain better knowledge and and a safe away and the most applicable way of loading offloading or handling cargo be very easy for him to go and pick up a job find himself a job on the outside as a commercial stevedore a longshoreman the training that a man acquires as a stevedore for terminal service company is incredible do the fact that this provides experience Tim there will be of invaluable assistance later on in civilian world it would make perhaps nine dollars an hour the forklift operators take a very good drivers training course on safety maintenance and the operation of mha equipment after that course you're ready for anything it's a very exciting job you get to go a lot of places do a lot of things me a lot of people what I like about transportation is challenging so very challenging job man up-to-date challenge is what they look No no no the other way there you go the milvan concept is a military acceptable containerisation of cargo they're relatively easy to use and it's easy to load them on a ship ships most vessels today are not very easy to load up on with the milvan concept run imagine better midship brothers event you I joined the army because the army just operates smaller type vessel what they call hovercraft smaller vessels cargo and tugboats and the smaller vessels you were men and is more of a challenge I think lefty/lefty it ships steady I came to Fort Eustis because of the transportation school I learned to operate and work on a tugboat this is a good way to the office to stay outdoors you're working around the deck on the deck it's a good way to travel and see things you get to go up up and down the east coast on various trips it's an exciting feeling to be you know hold it under half a million dollars worth of equipment it's a responsible demanding challenging feeling and I wouldn't trade it for any other jobs aren't he's gotten off instruction and education never stops at Fort Eustis whatever runs sales or lifts it's there to be learned the latest techniques of teachings such as audio visual are used in the transportation school and instruction covers everything from the intricacies of marine diesel engine to the pains taking care of a helicopter well the self-paced program here is about the best type of instruction I've ever encountered whereas you can work at your own speed and if there's something that you don't really understand you can go over it again and if there's some things that you can really get into you can just breeze through them really quick this way you can get ahead and like the normal school last 12 weeks but if you work at a pastor rate and get out sometimes 6-8 weeks it's great once this engine has started and hydraulic connection between this engine and this engine will start this one that way you'll need one ended really to get started let me demonstrate top flight instructors help students put learning to work by actual hands-on experience the good thing about this course is that you know you don't read out a book to me a book is born classroom is boring but we go out tear down the heads in this course you work right on the engine you don't you don't fool around with boring stuff you get out and apply it to what you've done to what they're teaching them and I think that's the best big man coming into the army is the very best way as far as trying to get an education trying to get ahead because a lot of people are too young to get a decent job on the outside and a lot of people doesn't don't have the skills to get a good job on outside and coming to the army is the way to get the skills if I had received the training on the outside that I've received here it would probably have cost me a few thousand dollars and I haven't got that kind of money and the Army's giving me better training when I think the civilians everything now not that we're putting on make sure that we only use at one time this is a throwaway bolt due to the fact that it's self locking and we can only use it one time the helicopter now is the thing of the future there's a lot of lives depending on the quality of the work that you do have a plan to stay leaves the ground have a very nice club take your wife if you're married or anything you know and its really an enjoyable place in my wife just had a baby a service is paying for most of it alls I'm paying is $25 if I would have been on the outside but it cost me around twelve hundred dollars I think it's kind of great to wear the service takes care of our servicemen like they do the old myth that army chow isn't any good that's completely out it's off the books it is as good as food is you can get anywhere gives you a good feeling when a man comes up to you and says that he enjoyed a meal or enjoyed a certain product that you yourself prepared or one of the men you're working with prepared we have very good cooks here for you sis and they all take pride in their work I chose for it uses my station of choice because I'm very historically minded and we're close to our team DC and the colonial history around here at Williamsburg there's many nice beaches and it's just beautiful country all the way around come on sugar I love horses it's one of the great advantages of Fort Eustis is the riding stable that they do have here you can come here during your free times in the evenings during the week or on weekends and ride the horses you can bring your friends or just come out here and ride alone and just think about things you can just go on the trails through the woods and just ride I think the special services here boy used is fantastic any sports available got a tow bar which is the first thing that you have to take off the aircraft when you get here keep the propeller from hitting when you start it up and if you'll come on back here we'll talk about some of the controls one of the reasons why I'd like to warrant the opportunity to fly at a much reduced rate than you would find in the civilian flying school do I can get my private license for maybe one one half at the most of the price that you would find it out civilian flight school uh is this a good sentence how will he conduct himself one thing i like about for Eustace is they make it easy for you to pick up a lot of credits towards your college degree in the immediate area here i think there are about seven or eight colleges and four of them teach right here on the post so you don't even have to travel around another thing it repays about 75% of the cost towards your college education and you can't beat that man I like being here for uses because it's close to historical places like the other day I took my wife down to Williamsburg and Jamestown and we had really quite a good time just just seeing the sights and taking a lot of pictures you going to Virginia Beach man that's the scene Oh watch the women and very keen ease my bike and everything more that that at the end thing it's the job of the transportation Corps to put supplies where they're needed and keep them coming until the missions accomplished and list now for pork Eustace the Army's transportation center if qualified you'll be guaranteed in writing a year of stabilized duty at Fort Eustis after you complete your basic and advanced individual training and in most cases advanced training and transportation skills is given at Fort Eustis then your years duty tour on the post begins see your army representative and start a career that moves you
