Description: This film "An Eye in the Darkened Sky" presents the Grumman A6-E Intruder; a twinjet all weather attack air craft first produced in 1960 and which had first seen action in the Vietnam War although it’s service continued into the 1990’s. Starting in 1979, Grumman began outfitting the Intruder with TRAM, or the Target Recognition Attack Multi-Sensor system. This was a small, gyroscopically stabilized nose turret containing a FLIR boresighted with a laser spot-tracker/designator and IBM AN/ASQ-155 computer. TRAM allowed highly accurate attacks without using the Intruder's radar, and also allowed the Intruder to autonomously designate and drop laser-guided bombs. The film begins with the USS John F Kennedy (CVN-67) at sea (:19). A strike group including the A-6E, F-14s and Corsair IIs is to take off for a simulated attack mission at night. The attack and support craft on the vessel are zoomed in on (:27). Pilots are briefed on their upcoming mission below deck (:33) and weather forecasts are reviewed (:40). On the mission, troops are instructed to keep an eye on the railroad trestle on their way out for any moving trains (1:03). As the mission was to be conducted at night, forces were to utilize their targets on the TRAM system (1:34). This stands for the Target Recognition Attack Multi-sensor and it is equipped with three sensors (1:48). A shot follows from behind the center window of the forward-looking infrared device known as the FLARE (1:50). This had the ability to sense the variations in heat in any object (1:56). The image thrown from it follows (2:03) of a vessel as whole images were viewed rather than radar blips (2:06). The laser ranger is pointed to which provides a target range to an onboard computer (2:17). The designator (2:24) directed laser guided bombers to their targets. The laser receiver (2:36) receives the target from a ground troop known as the forward air controller (FAC). The FAC is seen illuminating the target with a laser designator (2:46). The A6-E is seen preparing to launch its laser guided weapons (3:06) towards it’s first target of the railroad trestle (3:12). The Intruder swings in low towards its target to avoid being located by enemy radar (3:27). The air crafts terrain clearance system is pointed to (3:30) as it moves over hill tops (3:37). Footage is then provided of a shot of the terrain ahead viewed through the forward-looking infrared receiver (3:41). A damn site that had been chosen as a checkpoint passes by (3:51). As the craft nears the target, the laser range finder is activated (4:12). This is where the railroad would be hit though the film shows no explosion as it is a simulated attack (4:17). After the trestle was to be hit, the FLARE system assesses bomb damage (4:28). A second run is to be completed and the FAC is seen calling in the target (4:36). Northrop Grumman E-2 Hawkeye is shown in flight (4:40). The target location is transmitted to the Intruder (4:46). The craft switches to TRAM imagery in order to positively identify the target (4:54). After the attack is completed, reconnaissance is conducted (5:10). The infrared system is seen utilized over oil drums showing the level of fluid in the drums (5:20). The laser ranger improved weapon deliveries (5:55) and the laser designator, along with guided missiles ensured accuracy of strikes (6:01). The film concludes with the Grumman logo (6:21).

[Music] a carrier strike force preparing for a simulated nighttime attack mission on deck attack and support aircraft already belongs below the men who will fly this mission are also being prepared which pretty girl fills you in on the overall picture the weather's going to be 3,000 foot overcast and should hold throughout the night in the area you'll be under the control of the e2 who will be at his usual station this code is moonstone moonstone is also controlling the target fighters so if you need some f-14 cover calling the same frequency and you'll get it on the way out we want you to take a look at the railroad trestle take a good look and see if you can catch a train on it the mission timing is dictated by the train schedule there are friendly forces operating past the bridge if they need help or get a couple of good targets moonstone may give you a call if you don't get a ground support call then you are cleared for a run on the tank farm your approach to the target will be high until reaching the drop down point keep low over the land or through the knotch to avoid their radar in order to see their targets during the simulated mission the crew of the Grumman a-6 II will rely on their tram system tram an acronym for target recognition attack multi-sensor combines three sensors in one turret behind the center window is a forward-looking infrared device called a flare it discerns the differences in heat emissions in any object or landscape or seascape for that matter and provides a television like image of everything within its range ships are not radar blips but ships that can be clearly examined identified and viewed close up to the right of the infrared receiver is a laser ranger that provides accurate target range to an onboard computer and a designator to direct laser-guided bombs right to the target the crew can select the most vulnerable part of a target day or night and be certain of hitting it a sensor on the opposite side is a laser receiver that picks up targets designated by a forward air controller or fact working on the ground when the fact selects and illuminates a target with his own laser designator it is identified on the tram display allowing the a6c crew to release laser-guided weapons with devastating accuracy these then are the working tools of the tram system that make this multi facet a 6e mission possible no other aircraft could handle it target number one a railroad trestle using the a6 II inertial navigation system which has been aligned on the carrier deck before takeoff the crew picks up the approaching landmass on radar low-level penetration diminishes the chance of being picked up by hostile radar while the aircraft's terrain clearance system helps guide the aircraft around and through local Hills and ridge tops if desired a bombardier navigator can also see the terrain ahead by using the forward-looking infrared receiver [Music] a dam site provides a checkpoint on the way to the target our route the crew also studies the terrain for enemy movements or potential mobile armor builder approaching the target the bien sloughs his cursors hands off the target from radar to forward-looking infra-red and activates the laser rangefinder the BN can now precisely target the railroad trestle a runner's high speed level attack as the a6 e leaves the target area the FLIR tracks the target enabling the BN to accurately assess bomb damage on the second run this night a forward air controller calls in the target and orbiting e2z hands a 6e control to the fact who transmits target location to the asic seed has an offset from his own beacon as soon as the a6 II radar locates the ground beacon the pn switches to tram imagery for final positive target identification and completes the attack run the last run of the night is for reconnaissance only the target a tank farm which the infrared system can see more clearly in the dark than the naked eye can see in broad daylight even to the level of oil in the tanks all information is duly recorded on videotape the mission is now complete it's been a full night's work but on the way home the a succeed could make non provocative surveillance runs on ships in the area locating and identifying them without their knowledge day or night good weather or bad the a succeed tram system gives the task force a new dimension in locating and identifying potential targets the laser Ranger ensures improved weapons delivery a laser designator when used with guided weapons ensures pinpoint accuracy it's a unique system an eye in the darkened sky fully integrated within the proven a succeed to enhance an already formidable attack aircraft [Music]
