Agnes Hildebrand Wilson (Burgess) is interviewed about student demonstrations saying, “violence is against all that an educational institution stands for.” She states that students should be allowed to protest peacefully and meaningfully. Responding to a question about how students should be reprimanded, she suggests a “positive approach” over reprimand.
Wilson was the first African-American woman to be named South Carolina Teacher of the Year (1968), and was also named a National Honor Roll Teacher in late April 1969. Footage dated April 25-30, 1969. Remarks may possibly related to the student takeover of Voorhees College on April 28

I think violence is against all that an educational institution stands for and certainly we deplore that we protect and defend their right to protest peacefully meaningfully but we deplore the violence and I think that this has its origin or at least it gets its suggestion it's cute from other parts of our social order how do you think these students should be reprimanded this is hard to say and I hate to use the word reprimand I've been teaching such a long time that I've come to realize that a positive approach and there is always a positive and creative approach sometimes it is not very efficient because it takes a longer time then immediate reprimand each case again has to stand on its own merit I think that there is no one solution that can cover every situation like a blanket well what what merit would you suggest for say students going in and taking over the president's office in the administration building well we are always sorry when that happens I feel that perhaps this is where we are quite sure that it's a demonstration of a certain degree of immaturity and sometimes a responsibility on the part of students who resort to this kind of means in order to attain there is you have any solutions really I don't have any solutions
