This reel contains the complete play-by-play footage from the football game played between the University of South Carolina Gamecocks (white jerseys) and the Wake Forest University Demon Deacons (dark jerseys) on November 27, 1958.
The Gamecocks won the home game played at Carolina Stadium in Columbia, SC by a score of 24 to 7.
Notable Plays:
Runningback Alex Hawkins threw a 45 yd. bomb touchdown pass to other Gamecock runningback King Dixon on a spectacular halfback sweep pass play (14:41).
Gamecock defensive backs (#22 and #12) intercepted the Demon Deacon quarterback at 15:58 and 19:33.
Another halfback sweep pass play for a touchdown from Alex Hawkins to King Dixon (18:42).
Notable Players:
One notable player from this footage is University of South Carolina offensive lineman Ed Pitts. One of the finest linemen in program history, Pitts was first-team all-ACC in his final two years and an All-American in 1959.
Another notable player is halfback King Dixon, named Academic All-ACC in 1956, 1957 and 1958, and who was tri-captain on this team and playing his final game in this film. Along with the next notable player, Dixon and Hawkins were known as the Gamecocks' "touchdown twins".
One of only two Gamecocks to ever be named conference player of the year, University of South Carolina runningback Alex Hawkins took the ACC’s prize in 1958 and was also named a third-team All-American. He ended with 1,490 career yards and led USC to 19 wins in three years – at the time, it was the second-most successful three-year period in
program history, behind 20 wins from 1924-26.
