Payne I'm very glad that you have called this song racket to our attention I can easily understand that it is very detrimental to your business and to the business of all songwriters and music writers the United States copyright law is designed to protect all persons in their literary property and by that means to lay a firm basis for progress in culture and knowledge I feel that this new song racket constituting in a wholesale piracy of 80 different copyrighted songs time is one of the meanest rackets which has been brought to my attention and in certain respects is meaner even the narcotic racket the bankruptcy racket the poultry racket and the stock fraud racket which we have had occasion recently to prosecute I shall be very glad to place this matter in the hands of my assistant mr. Gerson to conduct this prosecution under my supervision and I assure you that our entire office will throw all its energy behind this prosecution mr. Payne and I can easily realize that this racket which you'll call to my attention is one of great seriousness and very detrimental to your business and to the business of the songwriters and music publishers throughout the United States it the copyright law has been designed to protect literary property of all kinds descriptions and the enforcement of the copyright law is essential for the preservation and progress in culture consequently I intend to throw the power of our office behind this prosecution and I feel that in so doing we will accomplish a public good and prevent this wholesale stealing of the brains of innumerable writers and publishers I think that this racket is as can be well said the meanest of its kind meaner indeed the narcotic racket the poultry racket the bankruptcy racket and others that we have had the opportunity to prosecute I'm asking mr. Grayson who is my assistant here to undertake the wake of conducting this prosecution under my general supervision and I know that not only he but all in my office will do their best to see that those who have created this racket are brought to justice of noted 8 mr.
