Zoo Animals Mammals Part II (1956)

[Music] good morning I'm the zoo doctor I'm one of many people to make the zoo a fine place for animals to live our zoo we try to keep all the animals contented and healthy we provide homes for them which are like native homes most of our animals live in family groups when animals have a good place to live and can be with others of their own kind they behave naturally and are entertaining to watch then when people come to visit the zoo they can see the animals at their best today we'll begin our Zoo journey by visiting some beautiful deer Axis deer come from the forested hills and bamboo jungles of India most deer have spotted coats only when they are babies but Axis deer keep their spots all of their lives the white spots and the color of their coats blend with the forest background and help to hide these deer from their enemies deer belong to a large group of animals called hoofed mammals hoofed mammals live on Plants the deer chew their food slightly before swallowing it later the food is brought back into the mouth and rewed as a cud many hoofed animals chew a cud male deer have strong sharp pointed aners which they use to defend themselves although their eyesight is not very good all deer have a remarkable sense of smell and Keen hearing many people think the axis deer is the most beautiful of all deer now I'd like to show you some elands they're the Giants of the Antelope family see that big male Eland he's the leader of this little herd sometimes he's very grumpy and bossy elans come from Africa the large fold of skin which hangs from the neck is called a Dap both the male and female have horns the horns are Hollow like a cow's horns for elands are close relatives of cattle elands use their strong sharp horns to defend themselves also they can run very fast at our Zoo the zebras live in large paddocks these graceful animals come from the grassy Plains of central Africa we try to provide a zoo home which is like their native home there are several kinds of zebras the one with the narrow Stripes is the largest of the zebras zebras are related to horses but they're not as useful to man zebras are difficult to train and are not Dependable zebras are hoofed mamals too like all hoed mammals zebras live on plants now here's a strange and interesting animal this is the great gray kangaroo Australia Tasmania and New Guinea are the only places in the world where these animals are found in the wild they're the famous Hoppers of the animal world when in a hurry kangaroos can hop 15 to 20 ft in one jump notice how they use their short front paws kangaroos live on Plants today their keeper is giving them fresh green leaves to eat all kangaroo Mony carry their babies in pouches in the winter when the babies are born they are only about 2 in long the kangaroo baby lives and nurses in its mother's pouch for several months in the spring it leaves the pouch for short periods to run about and eat when it is frightened it scampers back into the pouch again here's the most unusual little animal a koala I want you to see him doesn't he look like a tree climbing Teddy Bear this koala came from Australia as a gift from the Australian people to the San Diego Zoo koalas live in only certain kinds of eucalyptus trees the leaves of these trees are their only food koalas don't drink water they seem to get enough moisture from the tender leaves they eat the koala is a marsupial like the WABE and Kangaroo the koala mother carries her baby in a pouch over her stomach when the baby gets too big for the pouch it rides through the trees on the mother's back clinging to her beautiful gray fur we have three Koalas in our Zoo here's another one climbing down from the tree where he lives he's looking for some fresh leaves to eat twice a day fresh eucalyptus leaves are placed in the two red buckets for the koalas the koala doesn't come down to the ground very often his legs are more useful for climbing trees than for walking on the ground he's slow and awkward the koala is watching for his keeper to come with food for him in his native home the koala likes to sleep in trees most of the day at night he moves about and looks for food at the zoo his food is brought to him during the daytime Skippy while you've been walking back and forth the keeper has come with your fresh green leaves you better hop back into your [Music] tree in their bulging cheeks koalas have a cheek pouch where they store some of the leaves these leaves will be eaten later one koala can eat about 2 and 1/2 lbs of eucalyptus leaves a day although koalas look somewhat like small Bears they are not members of the bear family at all but let's walk on and see some true Bears all our bears live in big open air Grotto where there's plenty of room to run and play each Grotto has a pool and running water at the rear are caves that open toward the front of The Grotto the animals are fed in these caves they sleep and rest in the caves too out of sight of zoo visitors these frolics and bears are relatives of the grizzly bears they come from Alaska and are called monu Island bears bears live a Carefree life in the zoo since they have nothing to worry them and no enemies to fear when the Bears are being fed the doors of the caves are locked then it's safe for the keepers to go into The Grotto to clean them the concrete floors are thoroughly washed clean sanitary surroundings help to keep animals happy he when you see the thick warm coats of these sloth bears you may think they come from a very cold country but they don't sloth bears are natives of India and Salon the sloth bear eats fruits flowers and wild honey but most of all he enjoys ants and termites he puts his snout into an ant hill and uses his long lips to draw the ants into his mouth by suction notice his long sharp claws they are a great help to him in getting food wild animals prefer to drink running water so all our animal homes are provided with a small stream of running water the polar bears have a large deep pool in their Grotto because they like to swim and dve today fresh clean water is running into their pool although polar bears come from Icy Arctic regions they easily adapt themselves to the milder climate of our [Applause] Zoo polar bears are as much at home in water as they are on land they are fine swimmers polar bears have thick fur on their feet so they won't slip on ice and snow they walk without making a sound polar bears stand up on their hind legs and walk for forward and backward they want to attract the attention of the zoo visitors who throw them bread popcorn and peanuts although their keeper gives them the proper amount of food they like these Choice tidbits people always enjoy watching the Bears I expect you'd like to stay longer but I have one more animal to visit I want you to come with me because I know you'll enjoy meeting him how's he doing doctor he seems fine to me you don't have to worry about him anymore but uh give him a little extra milk every morning for a week or so we'll say for just a moment I was going to give him his milk there's your milk there you are of all the animals we've seen today the chimpanzees are the easiest to train and are the most intelligent these young chimps are lovable and funny they learn fast because they are fond of the trainer they try to please him by doing just what he tells them to do they're learning to sit in a chair and can drink milk from a cup today you've been behind the scenes of the zoo with me you've seen some of the things that are done to make this Zoe a good place for animals to live all the animals you've seen have been mammals but you haven't seen all the mammals that live here this zoo is a very big place lots of animals live here that aren't mammals they're birds for instance many many birds from all over the world and there are reptiles like snakes and crocodiles turtles and lizards there's so many that we couldn't see them all during one visit I guess you'll have to come again and see some of the other animals the next time [Music]
