don't worry young as soon as I graduate high school I'll take care of us we may need his or anyone's help [Music] and was like the next mom would leave a cold breakfast for me before she went to work [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] why didn't something different ever happen to me I wondered what the other kids at school did that was different gee I'd like to grind up the loot today but I tell you what you do intervention some to the other kid not rusty [Applause] in the school locker room at the gym period Roy caught hold of me doing a lot of good and it won't cost you anything either I'm late for class leave me alone don't put me down man let's make it together just little on a single pick yeah yeah how many get stuck today not many don't seem interested didn't I tell you how to do it get plenty that the rest of the might get him smoked it and the whole school be doping a kid named bill Daniel give the I'll do the rest [Music] I worked afternoons and all day Saturday in Wilson's hardware store you'll have to stay the night though they take an inventory but I've got a date tonight can't wait till tomorrow [Applause] [Music] but the time I finished it was late I'm sorry I'm late I got Marilyn thought she did so she went to a movie with a girlfriend that's too bad I'm telling you were here okay everyone had someplace to go that evening but me hey man Saturday night yeah my friend loaned me his car going to a party gonna pick up a couple of girls gonna come along sure I've got nothing better to do [Applause] [Music] the party was held in someone's apartment [Music] I was introduced to moose and he seemed like a great guy [Music] [Applause] [Music] everyone was laughing and having a good time [Music] some big fella came over and started to talk to me [Music] he offered me a cigarette it seemed like a regular pack [Music] I took a few puffs and things began to get fuzzy and move in slow motion the big guy and everyone else was laughing at me [Music] but moose came over I was scared [Music] from the looks of the place moose had plenty of dough [Music] thanks Fi yeah I was short as a kid I didn't have much choice yourself and get to a trainer then you can fight for me I'm kidding fifty dollars a week at the start and a lot more later with your smart [Music] I'll take a chance I began to feel sick of it huh I'm not [Applause] yes [Music] pick you up all right [Music] why not if mu said it was alright [Music] [Applause] I told you build smokes them well okay the show that didn't you see with Luke okay Marylyn didn't like the idea that I dropped school but I've made up my mind to give it a try [Music] I guess that was the beginning of the end for me [Music] I was smoking Reapers regularly now only one a day wasn't enough to keep me happy but I didn't think anything of it I could hear mom coughing at night and I was determined to send her away to a sanatorium where she could get well [Music] I was training at the neighborhood gym under the watchful eyes of moose [Music] [Music] by the third week I had enough money to send my mother away to a sanatorium [Music] by then I knew that mousse took heroin or H as it's called and an addict can't stand being around anyone who doesn't take the stuff so one night after the others had left well this is it kid energy chance to be a real help to lightning my grandma gesture of joint a little cake triangles you know locate my traveling with us or not well I try anything once the night of my first fight my arms felt like clay the other guy made hamburger out of me [Music] that evening at the pad I stayed off by myself the whole side of my face burned like fire [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] I thought maybe I'd feel better if I put a cold compress on [Music] and I found mooses - capsule of H I thought a shot of the stuff would help cool that burning in my face [Music] a while later it hit me [Music] you thought something was wrong in my haste I had taken an overdose of the stuff enough to kill me and someone didn't most knew he had to act quickly in order to revive me [Music] I was grateful to him but after that close brush with death I decided to quit drugs [Music] [Music] I went back to my old job I was plenty proud when I got my first weeks pay and eager to see Marilyn again [Music] cover me mouths I work here this bad man move away I found out later that Maryland's folks had moved to another city and lost touch with my old friends at school [Music] I was lonely [Music] I miss the good times of the pad [Music] get buzzed around no I okay how many caps do you want any plane tomorrow three for yourself gee thanks [Applause] oh I kicked can swear on it yeah I guess so [Applause] Amiata leave town how are the other guys at the pad why don't you come and find out for yourself okay I think I will [Music] I was taking a chicken [Music] I kept telling myself that I was too smart now to let the stuff get the best of me but I could stop anytime I wanted to [Music] one morning I was shaking so hard I couldn't stand up I'd forgotten to take my shot of H the night before then I knew I was hooked but I couldn't live without the stuff [Music] the drug was expensive I needed money badly [Music] my mother came back in the sanatorium unexpectedly [Music] [Music] [Applause] now at the hospital they were taking the drug out of my system withdrawal they call it [Music] [Applause] you holler and scream with pain and no one can help [Applause] after the withdrawal to social workers from the hospital came to see me bill this is the most important point in your life you have to decide which way you want to go no one can make the decision for you the doctors can withdraw the drug from your system they can't kill the yearning for the stuff inside of you that can kill you the best thing you can do is to help others keep away from it think it over call if you ever need us we'll be glad to help anytime but we can't help you unless you want to help yourself I didn't trust them what did they stand to gain [Music] when I was released from the hospital I walked the streets nothing had changed only I had changed changed so that I thought I could never return to normal life again I felt like a stranger I was afraid I wanted to go back to drug [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] when did you get back from your friend I'll share with you [Applause] [Music] you know friend of mine I owe you but you saved my life I don't want no dead guy [Music] I didn't want to end up like moose [Applause] the Social Work is said to call [Applause] [Music] my only chance for a new way of life was at the other end of that telephone [Music]
