At most airlines, marriage [music] spells finish to hostess career. Or at best a ground job. Not [music] so at TWA. 15% of TWA hostesses are married. >> [music] >> This is Katie Paul. TWA interviewer. One of 16 [music] nationwide. What qualities is Katie looking for in potential TWA hostesses? Ravishing beauty? >> [music] >> Not at all. At least outwardly, most girls can qualify. Katie places neatness and naturalness first. The biggest part of her job is spotting the inner qualities a hostess must have, such as >> [music] >> a warm personality, a genuine liking for people, helpfulness, a level head, and perhaps [music] just a dash of adventure. No wonder any girl chosen feels she has won more than a chance at an exciting career. She's [music] been paid a great personal compliment. Those selected after further tests and interviews [music] go to TWA's famed Jack Frye training center in Kansas City for a 5-week training course with pay. >> [music] >> The girls come from everywhere. From farms, small towns, cities, >> [music] >> from every European country of the free world, from many Asiatic countries. >> [music] >> Average age, 20 and a half. Three in four attended college. One in four has a college degree. [music] They come from colleges and universities all over the United States. Almost all had previous jobs. This is entering class 6411 and 6412. The girls are told each will one day be a vital part of that world. The one part most passengers [music] will ever know personally, as such, the representatives of all TWA. These are the Dos Mundos apartments, two worlds. Hostess training center living quarters in the suburbs. Tough? No. The girls really rough it. >> [music] >> Heated swimming pool. Air conditioning in each apartment for four girls. >> [music] >> Complete kitchen including dishwasher. Beauty salon. Recreation room. Here is where the girls live, relax, [music] study, work for five work and play weeks. The scene, beauty salon in the apartments. >> [music] >> The time, first day, p.m. [music] The cast, all principals, classes 6411 and 6412. >> [music] >> The star, Mr. Marvin, hair stylist. The objective, the most becoming hairstyle, skin, and eye makeup for each girl suitable to the trim uniform that soon, hopefully, will be hers. >> [music] >> Primary taboos, the exotic, the extreme. Almost every girl will have her hair changed in some way, a new cut or styling or a color change from the way out. Also out, heavily beaded mascara, excess makeup. >> [music] >> The aim, quiet good taste to set off the neat uniform. >> [music] [music] >> Before and after, quite a difference. >> [music] >> Mr. Marvin does it every time. Brings out basic features the girls seldom know they had. >> [music] >> These are the beauty facilities at Jack Frye training center. Here is where the girls are taught how to be a more poised, finished product. No matter how well groomed a girl may be on arrival, at Jack Frye she'll be taught surprising and invaluable new methods of self-care, >> [music] >> for the hostess must always look her best. So, she learns new basics about skin care, >> [music] >> how to bring out its warmest tones, and how to achieve a new art in makeup. And she learns, too, new, quick, and efficient ways to care for her hair. How to keep it and her makeup looking lovely all day long, even if arriving in a rainstorm. >> [music] >> Also, she is taught individualized exercises. How to sit. >> [music] >> How to walk. >> [music] [music] >> How to stand. >> [music] [music] >> Carry your coat. >> [music] >> The first half of every day is given to briefing, reviews, and examinations. Then new material, often introduced by programmed instruction. Seems automated? Actually, it's the most individualized of instruction. The instructor can see at a glance from right, wrong answers on the panel which students don't grasp what. Too many wrong answers and the instructor tries again. One or two wrong answers, instruction where indicated. Result, almost 40% more subjects covered in far less time.
