[Music] la this is the story of idle machines idle tools the story of how men and women through carelessness negligence and thoughtlessness can cause these tools and machines to be idle idle tools idle machines precious time loss all the machines and tools in the world are useless unless we have workers to keep them running we are the ones who must see that they do keep running by working safely by following good health habits and working steadily to the men of the Armed Forces war is no newspaper headline it's the scream of shells and bombs crashing down among them the rattle of machine gun fire hunger and dirt and Grim determination these men are our neighbors someone's son sweetheart brother or husband they show their loyalty and devotion on the actual World battle lines we men and women in Industry take our cracks at the enemy not on the firing line but on the production line idle machines May mean unarmed soldiers idle machines and tools may mean lost battles in the field we all want to do our part in the National effort for victory but to ensure tomorrow's delivery of material to our farflung battlefronts we must resolve today to follow safe and helpful practices at our work the startling news that came to us of the bombing of Pearl Harbor is now vast overshadowed by this news from the industrial front thousands of War workers have been killed on and off the job each day since Pearl Harbor here are the figures casualties to American armed forces from Pearl Harbor to November 1942 killed or wounded 9,129 missing or prisoners 39,821 on the the home front same period casualties caused by accidents among American workers killed 44,500 injured 3, 800,000 were these industrial casualties the result of accidents caused by big operations the result of inj is caused by big machines the result of working at dangerous occupations definitely not these deaths and injuries were caused for the most part by carelessness bad habits poor planning poor thinking and not following instructions by workers on ordinary jobs when we came to work we were instructed not only in the right way to do our jobs or operate our machines but also in safe practices the proper clothing to wear and the following of good health habits for our own protection and the protection of fellow workers most accidents on the industrial front are caused by thoughtlessness carelessness or just plain laziness here's a man who thinks he's too busy to work safely he's just an accident going somewhere to happen he'll wish tomorrow that he had heeded safety rules today this fellow doesn't believe in the signs he tacks up therefore the other pH to read but accidents are not the only cause of idle machines good health is important to keep production moving common coals for example affect the entire body lower our resistance dull our faculties and render us susceptible to other ailments take care of coold TOS from the start and protect fellow workers by not spreading them clean health habits will help keep our machines from being idle skin infection is responsible for a big percentage of industrial illness lost time if you notice anything wrong with your skin report it at once the material you work with may be harmless to 95 out of 100 workers but you may be one of the five that it does affect don't be ashamed to report any skin infection at once industry is now in engaged in the greatest production program in history everybody no matter what their job should be working so that their part of the assembly is delivered on time the results of lost time caused by workers who do not pay attention to safety and health rules cannot be tolerated if we are to keep on schedule empty spaces in a room full of machines and piles of material held up for the next operation because of absent operators continues to be a Slowdown to the nation's war effort a man at work on an active job needs more energy than one sitting in an office all day such extra energy has to come from food wives can pack a lunch that packs a punch and make welcome additions to usual sandwiches by including a leftover piece of chicken or adding an orange already peeled wrapped in wax paper to lunch boxes at a restaurant we can choose the food that helps us to work efficiently a meat platter with green vegetables coal SLO cake and milk or a selection of soup vegetable salad or egg salad pie and beverage today's active jobs call for more good solid substantial high energy food production is slowed to an unbelievable extent by people who come to work tired and out of sorts they're at to become careless and have accidents and cannot possibly turn out efficient capacity work we may feel that all work and no play makes Jack a doll boy and that we need relaxation after work we do but we must also gear ourselves to moderate living while illness has been noted as one of the principal reasons for lost time it was found that many accident days and worker absentee days came immediately after payday a regional director of the war Manpower commission recently stated that 6% of War workers were absent daily that means about 600,000 away from work every day top performance at our work demands maximum planning of our lives away from work work we help the enemy when production is slowed up because we fail to take care of ourselves we can't burn the candle at both ends machines must not be allowed to remain idle because someone played cards too late or someone didn't feel like getting up the next morning or someone took an extra day off because a small injury or other indisposition gave them an alii to work efficiently we must have proper relaxation proper rest and proper food our sons Brothers husbands and neighbors who are at the front may also want to relax after their day's work is done can they take a day off because it's the day after payday can they take a day off to go see the movies or go on a shopping spree no they can't they can't stop till Victory is won we can't stop working either idle machines and lost time cannot win a war and this is a war that must be won by sweat and blood to ensure continuation of our way of life we have a big responsibility to our country our job is to stay on the job and turn out materials to end the war quickly this is not the time for harmful relaxation or Good Time Charlie athletes know they must get proper food and rest be able to meet and beat their opponents they must be alert and have complete coordination of mind and muscle so must we get our proper food and rest we are no longer children we can't have a truant officer come after us when we play hookie from work next time we in Industry think of staying away from work without just cause think what it means to the men at the front if we slow up our part of the victory program we must all cooperate we are all soldiers soldiers of the Armed Forces and soldiers of production all the machines and tools in the world are useless unless we have willing healthy and patriotic workers to keep them running let us not forget these famous words we mutually pledge to each other Our lives our fortune and our sacred honor all us for victory today tomorrow too late [Music]
