foreign [Music] thank you by the time this child grows up the song you've just heard will seem even more out of place than it does now 95 of all women will hold jobs at some time many for 30 years or more men and women will be sharing more and more of life's responsibilities in the past a girl could grow up to be a housewife or if she had to work a sales girl a secretary or maybe a nurse boys were expected to marry their sweethearts and become Breadwinners spending their lives in jobs reserved for men today's children will grow up into a very different kind of world [Music] see that's very good we did Mama how well will your children be able to take advantage of these changes a lot depends on how you prepare them attitudes are formed very early in life and by the time children start school they've already started to develop ideas about what men can do and about what women can do oh I got one that Maggie knows that don't you tell us you tell me who this is that's right you picked that one out very well and who's this everyday things that often go unnoticed help to perpetuate sexism parents should be aware of these influences and how they limit children's expectations even when they are young children learn a lot at home the environment created by parents can inhibit them or it can provide them with the resources they'll need to take advantage of the options available to them as they grow a non-sexist environment at home can help them to feel secure enough to choose from traditional and non-traditional roles in everything they do as adults Daddy needs a fork and a knife William wanted a doll he wanted to hug it and cradle it in his arms sexism is a very subtle process while it's not difficult to be non-sexist it does involve looking at many commonplace things in a new light language can be very sexist for instance think about the differences between words like Bachelor and spinster or master and mistress creepy tennis brother chanted the boy next door it's a good idea to avoid the cliche that help to persuade boys that they always have to be rugged strong and aggressive and it helped to convince girls that women should be pretty weak and passive and cradle and to take to the park so that when he's a father like you he'll know how to take care of his baby and feed him and love them and bring him the things he wants like a doll so that he can practice being a father and that's the end [Music] clothing is another subtle Factor it's easy to forget how important the right kinds of clothing can be right back inappropriate dress inhibits people watch your step it can also make them feel uncomfortable open please a little wider and it can restrict their freedom of movement oil's location I check your water it's not easy to enjoy Rough and Tumble play when you've been told not to stain or wrinkle a pretty dress all children can benefit from healthy exercise they should be dressed so that they can enjoy being outdoors [Music] foreign children really get a lot out of exercise and most importantly I think that they really build their own self-image and see that they can do a lot of different things and by encouraging exercise really active kinds of exercise they can see that they can be strong and can climb to the top of a tower or whatever it is that they're trying to do and I think it's important for us to encourage both boys and girls to to play actively and to expect that they are going to get dirty and it's not just boys that get dirty girls get dirty too [Music] Johnny [Applause] television is an indoor activity that has a powerful effect on children while you may be well aware of the negative impact of violence have you ever considered how TV commercials portray men and women planning dinner I hated night after night after night there's no question the TV is really counterproductive to what we're trying to teach them about sex roles because he picks up all kinds of ideas about what women are like what men are like what women can do what men can do and can't do that he doesn't get from us doesn't get from his daycare center but he comes up with them and the only place I can see he gets it is from TV than any other beauty cream in the world the name of this job I think the commercials are the most upsetting thing on TV to me [Music] when they come on they show the most negative image of the traditional woman role that she finds anywhere on TV when something like a legs commercial or ring around the collar comes on I just cringe it doesn't make any difference what my reaction is I still get traditional stereotype rolls back from her I don't know whether the TV commercials are the source of it or not but they probably reinforce whatever else she picks up helping children to recognize television's warped view of the world is just one of the ways parents can shape healthy attitudes there are others [Music] thank you [Music] is there anyone sharpness [Music] um let's slip this all right foreign [Music] yes look through the window there and then you'll see a line women are often intimidated by mechanical things because they've never had the opportunity to become familiar with them learning how to maintain a bicycle or how to use a camera can help girls to feel comfortable with machines of all kinds now if this have you got this in the picture that's that part I got cuts off right about there have fun till you feel until you hear a sound Lucina really enjoyed taking pictures together and this is doubly enjoyable for me because while I've always been interested in her interests it's not always happens that one of my children has been interested in what I do and this makes for an extra closeness and this is very helpful too since as a single parent I have to budget my time and money rather carefully a little knob there that you press and then the front will fall down now when Lucy showed interest in the workbench at age two or three I tried to provide tools with which he could be successful with the idea that she would then become familiar and comfortable with tools and over the years she's done this and the cameras there for just another tool with which she can become comparatively comfortable as a means of expressing what she sees in around her this one I purposely put on dark because there's our white stuff that was wise you did a pretty good job getting some of the picture in purpose it was your very first time yeah but all this stuff is focus and none of the stuff which wasn't focused on that thing right so probably it's a it's rather hard to get that line straight across that Circle right you have to get it straight yeah [Music] many men enjoy cooking a great deal others cook because they have to whatever the case cooking is a fact of life for adults of both sexes and all children deserve to know how to get around the kitchen thank you I learned coconut was very young I used to go in the kitchen a lot and watch my parents cook I was very fortunate that my father enjoyed cooking and he he would let me help him now that I'm not I have my own children it's very enjoyable for me to to help to help help him cook and I think it sort of brings us together [Music] they feel mature they like to help me makes them feel self-sufficient we cook a lot when when my wife isn't home we spend some time in the kitchen they like to eat the food the food that they've cooked very nice foreign [Music] make believe and fantasy play are important parts of everyone's childhood no one thinks twice about boys playing with aggressive dolls or toy soldiers but it's not uncommon to discourage them from playing with dolls that represent babies and yet all people have a potential and a need to be warm and nurturing to others now you are only turned into bad guy and then you got better oh I'll camp with the fact is that dolls help boys to experience the feelings of satisfaction that come with caring for others exactly playing with baby dolls is just as much fun as playing with soldiers and it can be a lot more satisfying [Music] you have to finish the whole bar YouTube you have to make sure he get all his water because it's involved with their children in the future okay I'll have some more your tangerine cinnamon and I always try to share the responsibility for Max and part of that was because we thought we should but the most important part of it was that we wanted to [Music] School [Music] I really love Max and and you think most fathers don't have a chance to express that just because they're not with their children enough their traditional roles limit their ability to express that to a very large extent because they just don't have the opportunity to be with their children and have that love between them come out and with Max that's that's why it happens and that's why I love it we nurture each other [Music] thank you foreign [Music] schools across the country have adopted non-sexist points of view they're not radically different they're just more sensitive to the needs of all children if you have the opportunity to select a nursery school look into its attitudes about sexism [Music] is the cold it's nice to be warm inside I and you forget how many times a non-sexist family environment doesn't require a lot of special things it's an attitude that's expressed in countless little ways to help make all children feel good about themselves and about their futures hard for us to even imagine what our children's world will be like and we can't prepare them for everything the future may bring but we can try to provide them with the confidence they'll need to face all kinds of challenges and opportunities that's what being non-sexist is all about [Music] foreign [Music] thank you
