The Magic Window (May 12, 1954)

hi there well you can see what I do it taking some of the blocks out of my great big bag here that i have i've locked in now joining them out on the table hope you remembered to bring some of your block today because after we get through it's a story about a little duck there are going to be building a lot of different things was our block but first of all how it started to listen to a story all about a little duck and well you listen to see what kind of a little ducky goes like this once upon a time there was this little duck that was hatched out of an egg along with some other little ducks only this little duck was so ugly oh he was so ugly to look at that even the old mother duck got tired of having him around the other files in the barnyard made fun of him until he could stand it no longer so we flew over the fence into a meadow and so frightened to flock of birds at the all-new away Oh said the little duckling I'm so hideous that i frightened even the little bird and a little duckling was so sad he just stayed right where he rise he stayed there all night because he didn't know where else to go and in the morning a flock of wild ducks loads up to the swath year which he was resting well who are you as the wild ducks but before the ugly duckling could answer they said sure that you don't stay around us we don't want you you're too ugly so the little duckling lay there for two more whole days and then a flock of wild geese came up out of the swamp and said come alone you're the one that we like you but just as a little duckling thought he would accept this invitation and go with the keys everyone heard a dog bark and the wild geese were so frightened again right up into the sky and went away without even saying goodbye and then big dog came hunting them he thought maybe some of them had a long way and there was a little ugly duckling hiding in the weeds and the dog came closer and closer and closer and a little ugly duckling just held his breath prefer that the dog would find him hiding there but the dog walked away and he didn't even bother the little ducklings this because I am so ugly side the little ugly duckling and he got up and very sadly walked away from the swamp pretty soon he came to a small to the house by the side of the road and his storm was coming up so the little duckling decided to go into the house he went all on the side and went around me about and finally he came to a crack in the wall until he crawled through the crack and right into the room and an old woman lived there with her hand and her cat and the duckling could see sparks coming from the eyes of the cat it was so dark inside well in the morning when the storm was over and it was light the old woman saw the duck in her house well she said what have we here can you all right eggs asked the little hand roll to the little ugly duckling well what are you good for and the cat said perhaps she can give off sparks in the book no I can't set a little ugly duckling well what all you're good for them and that made the little ducklings so sad that he decided not to stay in this house even so he left and he went back out into the cold again the clouds were getting very heavy with snow and it started snowing on it was getting colder and colder and the poor little duckling was so cold that he just hunched himself all your offense in a field and above him rose a whole flock of beautiful white birds and these beautiful white birds were flying away to a warmer land the little duckling wished with all his heart that he were one of them and he watched them as they went farther farther away but he didn't know anything about going south where it was warmer so he just stayed right here by the little fence post and felt very very sad and it grew much colder and the little duckling from a little pond that was nearby and he went swimming in this pond but when he went ashore for food he had to hurry right back for fear the water would be frozen by the time he got there and finally after many many days he dared not go for food at all because each time when he came back the hole in the ice would be smaller and smaller so finally he just had to sit in this small little hole in the ice and just sit there and sit there and wrap his little wings around in himself and try to keep warm but one day even this small little hole froze over and it froze the ugly little duckling tight to the ice well finally a pirate came along and he found this little ugly duckling frozen in the ice there and he decided that he would take him home so he got out he's actually chopped away around the ice until the little duckling was free and then he picked him up put him under his arm and took him home to his wife and his wife put him right near the stove where it was nice and warm and pretty soon the little duckling thought out and oh my he opened his eyes and then then he saw the farmer and his wife and he became so frightened that he flew right up into a great big milk pan and knocked it over and the milk spilled out oh the floor and then well that made the farmer's wife very mad you could imagine how mad it would make her to have milk spilled all over her clean floor and she's go to the little ugly duckling and she took a broom after him and she was really going to sweep up the milk but the polar ugly duckling thought that she was going to hit him with the broom and he was so frightened that finally he flew right out through the open door and back into the cold cold outside and so fine may a hard winter passed and a beautiful warm spring came to take its place and then the duckling found that he could flap his wings and fly and so he flew until he came to a beautiful garden with a pond in the very middle of it and all around the edge of the pom-pom there were little stones piled up and there were Russia's growing there and cattails growing there right in the very center of the pond swam three beautiful swans these were the white birds that the ugly duckling had seen in the fall when they were flying south remember he wanted to go over the Swan so badly he wanted to be friends with them and so he met on the pond and he started swimming towards them and he came closer and closer he got to thinking maybe they would chase him away maybe they wouldn't like him at all but that didn't stop him he decided to just keep right on going and as he came near them he kept thinking to himself oh I hope they don't chase me away because I'm so ugly and he came nearer and nearer and when he got right up next to them he hung his head in shame but as he did this he looked down into the water and he saw his own image in the water and he wasn't it ugly duckling at all he was nothing but a beautiful swan just like the other three swans on the other swans were very kind doing too and the little children came to the pond and threw cake crumbs to them and the children cried out to their parents all the news wanted the loveliest of all and the new swan lifted his proud hit and he said to his image in the water never dreamed of such happiness is this when I was but an ugly duckling well you know that's how it is very often with a lot of little babies lots of times they're very ugly when they're very little but then as they get older they're very pretty and grow into something that's quite beautiful remember the other day I was telling you about this little new baby yeah and I said that they weren't pretty at all and they aren't they still aren't very pretty they're very ugly in fact they're all pink and wrinkled and wiggly but it won't be too long before they grow up and then they'll be very pretty and white too soft and furry just like their mothers and fathers would you have your blocks already in front of you now all right then let's build something of all different kinds of blocks here here's one that's got medium sized I think see if I have a long one in here I think I have a long when someone hears one see how tall this block is a lot bigger than this first one I put on here isn't it and I think I have some little ones too here's a little square one and I have those kind and I have one here that's slanted i'll put it over here see how it runs down hill just like a keel this one is and then there's a round one now put the round room right here that's a big round with that dick here's a little round when i'll step right in front of it it's just a little tiny block evening well i think i have some square pillars to with the names if we were making poetry huh oh and here's one I know you'll like this is a chimney block see how it has a hole right here we could use it for a chimney or I bet we put it down like this we might pretend that it was a mouse oh it's both could be a mouse hole let's build something with our blocks now what should we feel I know we could build a house at the little duckling came to and he was looking for a place to get into out of the cold and I think we could use this little chimney block right here for the whole thats a little duck crawled through that was in the side of wall so we're going to make the house a little bit long it will so I'll put another one right there beside it then the houses have a rule inside so I better put some walls over here like this and that's maybe a big block along the back there but that's kind of not very much room to stand up in inside this house is just don't think i'll build it up a little bit there we'll just pile the blocks one on top of the other see up goes the building we can build a house much faster with blocks then the Carpenters can can't wait I guess that's just because our house is so much smaller up at gold and we can put a slanted roof on it here in the front there and maybe this is the house she has a little duck and crawl to here he comes we'll pretend there's a little tiny block here maybe this is a little duckling here he comes around here and he's looking for a place to go in and very cease the hole and I wonder if you can go through there yes you can he went right through there because when we take this part away there he is on the inside I don't know there's something else we can make with blocks too and that's a tower we can take these and just pile them up and see how high we can get them to go without falling down and we can put some sideways so this way i think i'll put wonder if the chimney will go on here was that a stay there like that think we'll try it and see here's a slatted one when you put on there I don't know whether this slatted what maybe it'll stay we'll see and now put this tall skinny one right on top and there and then maybe there'll be a big lightning storm and this will be a piece of lightning and the lightning will come close to the tower and jerk away and then the next time maybe Oh at the bottom of and not to top right off of it and maybe the next time when the Lightning comes oh it didn't knock it down I'm going to pull this block off right here and see what happens there's more then why'd you see how high you can build the tower up you even get to be as tall as you are without it falling down then maybe you can drop blocks on top of it
