The Last Pony Mine

[Men Speaking] (Unintelligible) what did you say (Unintelligible) Well I thought maybe (Unintelligible) (Unintelligible) makes it you mean you didn't learn him how to run out all that time He would learn (Unintelligible) run a machine everybody I worked with I always learned I think it's a good thing you never know maybe we might have to take you out of it [we?] might have to cut them loose where's the rest of them [Banjo Music] [Iron clangs] I think we better go Lloyd it's seven o'clock we're supposed to be working I better see if this whole thing will start over here it may not even start any wish you didn't have to be down it's not too nice to go down in the ground [when there's?] sunshine and it makes you feel a little blue I don't know there's something about it did you just like to do it it's got a magnet to it it drags you there [When you get in?] now you know what you got to do the fish thing and keep at it all day long from one thing to the other days you had good days and bad days in [the mine?] you like everyone else whenever you go in you look at that roof and you'll watch yourself and you try to take care of yourself in there [we've?] never had to carry a man out around 30 years and better then a stretcher [that?] has never been unfolded so pretty good record [Calling at horse] this is just seasonal work the mine because [they?] just use it for household and heating and that's all [you?] don't use it summer and winter like they used to when the railroads were here they'd buy the coal and leave to have a thrashing machine you would buy it and these creameries and all that to make the steam and the more electricity come on why's everything with electricity after you get used to it your knees gets tough you can do a lot more work by being down on your knees you can tell a coal miner by looking at him he's bent over he has trouble with his back come here Bill come here come here [Calling at horse] get in there (Inaudible) [Calling at horse] whoa whoa I imagine they wouldn't average over three cars of dirt a day this winter but winter before and when their way in there why [it averaged?] just about half and half we just take it up dump it up on the pile we call the shale pile it makes shale use is on for roads and different things [Banjo Music] yeah I often wondered what I'd be doing if I wasn't digging coal him [seem?] like you get stuck someplace you can't get out I was 16 when I started in the mine got out of school I think I laid home a year or so and then I went to the coal mine I started in a coal mine I think I was getting $2 a day couple and empties I've been in since 1916 I'm ready to develop them to old close to 70 now and this is where you want to do I don't think a man [that?] opened a mine up he could get anybody to work in it all guys left now no young fellas has taken it up [Banjo music] [Iron clangs] last of August I've done it for years we'd start in the mines so I was just thinking about it the other day it seems kind of funny now that I'm not gonna go back to mine (Unintelligible) longer now that I kind of like it [though?] you know when [you get so old?] it's different story I used to like it I've worked a long time in them and I think it gets in your blood stream and I just like to work in them I don't know why kind of grows on you after 43 years that's about all you know something that you've done from a time you's a kid on why it's just a habit I think that there'll be a time it'll come back but I think they'll have a different method of taking this coal out of this ground [Banjo music]
