The Earliest Color Footage of the Pan-Am Flying Boats (1934) | 16mm Film Scan

Description: Watch in 4K! Circa 1934, I believe to be the earliest known color footage of any of the famous "flying boat" clipper aircraft, as well as the airport. The second half of the footage appears to be after they flew on one, with shots of what may be a Caribbean fruit plantation of some kind (mostly papaya?). This film was shot on Dufaycolor, which used a three layered (red, green, blue) arrangement of intersecting lines to construct color - not dissimilar from our screens of today. Introduced to 16mm in 1934, it was the earliest full-color home movie film that didn't require any sort of special additive color filter system like Kodacolor. However, Kodachrome released in 1935 -and early color stability issues aside- it was superior to Dufaycolor in every single aspect. As such, it would be very unlikely that this film dates to after 1935. The Sikorsky S-42, Consolidated Commodore, Sikorsky S-40 are all featured. Only tail number that could be made out was NC-667M on the commodore. The red was too prominent so had to bring down the levels on it, which in concert with the video compression does make it to appear more of a diagonal line pattern rather than a 45 degree grid. I think most of the film where red was too strong (up until the dock scene) was taken without a filter that was supposed to be used.
