Description: In 17th Century France, Cardinal Richelieu is influencing Louis XIII in an attempt to gain further power. Meanwhile, in Loudun, the Governor has died, leaving control of the city to a dissolute and proud priest. Urbain Grandier secretly marries another woman, but news of this drives Sister Jeanne to jealous insanity. She accuses him of witchcraft and of possessing her, leading to a public exorcism in which the nuns remove their clothes and enter a state of "religious" frenzy.
