Description: A Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer production available only to schools. "In this we have the story of a young doctor's fight against child-bed fever, and his discovery that the disease was spread by germs. Dr. Semmelweiss wants to publish results of his experiments, but the hospital staff refuses to cooperate and demands his resignation. Whereupon he publishes a book that is not read, and eventually his mind breaks under the strain and he ends his days in the Vienna Insane Hospital." Much later, however, his work is rediscovered, is read, and accepted in all parts of the world. Pasteur, Lister, and many others were stimulated by his experiments. "Recommended also for high school classes in social studies and in general science, and especially for study units on the life and labors of men who have made outstanding contributions to human welfare."
