[Music] She came to visit. >> Is this one of my relatives? >> No, but he started a chain of events that led to the building of this great palace. Get on my knee and I'll tell you the whole story. Now, once upon a time many years ago, when your greatgrandfather ruled the land, the kingdom was very, very poor. There was a miller who lived not far from the castle. One day, after drinking far too much ale in a local tavern. He bragged that his daughter was so clever, she could spin straw into gold. Well, of course, it wasn't true. Nobody can even spin straw into hogs bristles, let alone gold. Unfortunately, word of the miller's daughter's imaginary skill reached the castle, and the king ordered her to appear before him. >> My daughter seems to have gone in the wrong way. >> No, no, no, no. She's fine. Don't worry about her. >> Uh, actually, >> oh, what wonderful times we shall have. The kingdom is entering upon a new life. >> Down in the dungeon with you. Why are you doing this? What have I done? >> Come on. Just call when you're ready. And the king doesn't want a piece of straw left. >> What does he want me to eat this? >> No. No, girl. Spin it. Spin it all into gold. And a king wants very fine gold, too. Remember that. [Music] They're mad. They're as crazy as buzzards, as looney as toads. Spin straw into gold. How about spinning worms into pussycats or millers into kings? >> Now, the king had two sons. One was an idol musician, and the other fancied himself a poet. Things. Things. Things. What rhymes with thing? >> Kings. Sings. Brings. Slings. Wings. Flames. >> Your majesty. Please. What have you done with my daughter? >> What? Oh. Oh. Oh. Yes. Well, just as soon as the straw is spun to gold, you will see her again. And I can assure you that the gratitude, all horror, all mistaken intentions, the gratitude of all the people will rain upon your >> She but I I was only bragging and it isn't true. >> Why, of course it's true. Anyone need What isn't true? My daughter, sir. She Well, I thought we She isn't, but she can't even spin wool. >> Is this man saying that his daughter can't spin straw into gold? >> You see, it was the blacksmith, sir. He He said his daughter, who isn't isn't half as pretty as our daughter, she he said she could. And we didn't know that as >> you vanish. You'll never see your daughter again. You can't take your father again. Never. Never. [Music] Why are you here, child? [Laughter] >> They want you to spin the straw into gold, don't they? They're mad, aren't they? >> What will become of me? Mad kings and little people with windy voices. >> What will become of you? Indeed, you will die if you cannot spin the straw into gold. >> Moas. >> Alas, then I am doomed. >> But I can spin the straw to gold. Oh sir, >> I charge dearly for my services. >> Where? [Music] >> I believe your lovely ring would be ample compensation. [Music] My subjects are liars and braggards. They don't deserve me. Spinning straw into gold. [Music] They think they can fool me with that old trick. Never. I I give my life for their welfare in a row. Nine fall out off with their hearts. 11 fine ples sleeping on the ground. hate for our hearts with [Music] >> Of all the kinds of people in the world, I think I like millers the least. What do you think, fool? >> It's not right that a fool should squeeze oranges. >> Yes, quite right. It's their bad manners. And of course, they're really quite unnecessary in the larger scheme anyway. Why there are kingdoms where they've never even seen a miller. >> It's demeaning. Splatters all over my bells. >> Then there was my poor aunt Timothy. Why she never thought she spotted straw into gold? >> Oh. >> Oh. Well, I didn't really I mean I I thought I >> think things just aren't as they used to be. >> Gold thread all over my egg. Gold thread. That is gold. That is gold. What a pleasure to behold. A little pile of gleaming gold. Oh. Oh, God. I I'm sure you can find a little more straw for the lady here. She must be very anxious to keep on spinning. Aren't you, my dear? A thread of gold. Thread of gold. Ow. All right. [Music] [Applause] Oh, [Applause] Margo. What a stupid world to be trapped in. [Music] And then of course we must fix the south tower. A new granite facing would be nice. And a few cabins. Oh, and a moat. I don't know how we've gotten along all this time without a moat. >> It will come to no good, your majesty. >> Huh? What? Oh, I suppose. Well, other than just half a moat. As fast as the straw was spun to gold, the avaricious king brought yet more straw to the dungeon. Until one day, the king's son stopped rhyming long enough to notice the beautiful peasant girl. [Music] How would you like to marry? >> What? >> I think it's time you had a wife. And as it happens, >> father, that's what I came to ask you. You see, there's a >> there's a girl who is presently living in the uh lower quarters. She's really quite beautiful. >> Yes, the little straw girl. >> And I think there would be some advantage to our humble kingdom if she were to enter into the family. Father, who is she? >> If only I were a little younger. [Music] >> Tonight. Tonight. The very last night for spinning father to wealth. >> How long have I been here? It seems like years. >> Only days. It is snowing outside this night. >> Let me see the snow. I hate this room. >> Spin tonight and win the light. What can you pay me? >> I have nothing. >> So sad. If you've become queen, will you give me your firstborn? >> If I become firstborn? Queen. Yes. Yes. Yours. Of course. Just let me be. Spin and let me free. [Music] [Applause] [Music] My lady. My lady. We are to be married and you will be queen. [Music] And so they were married. The prince took his bride on a tour of all their lands. [Music] In the many months that they traveled, the princess saw things she had never imagined. [Music] The princess's child was a year old before she saw the dwarf again. >> Go away. >> So, you remember our little bargain? You see, it was all planned. >> What do you want? I'll I'll give you riches, jewels, gold. >> Have you forgotten so soon? It was I who gave you wealth. Before you were born, I knew the foolish miller would sing his wings on the anger of the king. And even before that, >> who are you? I am someone who was taken from another queen so long ago. I have forgotten my life's voyage dazzles my memory. >> Please, little windy man. Please, your mercy. If you so desire the child, then you must understand the taste of my love. >> There is something wrong here. It was not supposed to go this way. The tears should have been stone, not salt. This is my final compromise. If you can guess my name, in three days you may keep the child. Harold, Harry, Horian, Hank, uh, uh, Half Moon, Halbirden, uh, uh, Henry, Hal, Hal. No, I said that already. Greedy, your majesty, why do you want all these names? >> Please don't stop. I must have them. Hurry. >> Well, better than squeezing oranges. Let's see. There's clear and teal. Uh, horatio. Uh, henny hunky. Uh, >> that's a good one. >> Hunky. [Music] Do you know the name I carry? >> But >> it is the first day your queenship. >> Is your name Aaron? >> No. >> Arnold. >> Hardly. >> Andy Afton Abbott. >> That's all for tonight. >> What? >> Dear to what? What? Oh, I'm sorry, my love. Just a dream. Nothing. >> Very well. Good night. >> Perhaps I didn't tell you. Only three names a day will you be allowed to say. Those are the rules. [Music] Your name is spider legs. No turtle gnome. Never stumble bell. Only one more day and the child you'll pay. Skelebeast, Scunchan, Fish Fang. H. If only she would tell me why she wants these dwarf names. [Music] Today I am baking. Tomorrow I'll brew. And it even tide fetch the queen's baby. Things are not as they should be. The day is wrong. The bargain she'll keep. So maybe she'll weep when my name is revealed. Rumple Stiltskin. Kiss kiss. >> It didn't take the fool long to figure out what had happened. his name is Rumple Stillilskin. My lady, your baby is safe. >> Are you sure? How do you >> I know of your plight. His name is Rumple Stillskin. Rumple Still? >> So, you have found out. You know my name. Do you know what you have done? For thousand generations, my people have inhabited the forest. But you have stopped it. My only chance at a child, my only hope for continuence. You don't know the ancients. You have to join. >> So that's how you came to live in this great castle. From the gold spun by a dwarf as your grandmother dreamed on. >> But what happened to the miller? >> Ah, yes. Like so many stories about kings, this one's ringed with sadness. No one really knows what happened to the miller that your greatgrandfather banished, but I suppose he just wandered for the rest of his life thinking of his daughter and the cruelties of circumstance.
