Performance Rating In Metalcasting, Rating Film B

Year Published: 1976

Creator: National Foundry Association

Description: This is a color industrial training film from the National Foundry Association, made for practicing time-study "performance rating." It has no narration and works through a series of numbered foundry jobs, each introduced by a title card such as "Operation No. 5: Hand Grinding — 54-lb. Casting." On the shop floor, a worker in a white hard hat, goggles, leather apron and gloves uses a pneumatic grinder to clean a flanged steel valve body. Another worker leans a heavy casting against a pedestal grinding wheel to dress it, and an operator runs a molding machine that compacts sand into a large flask. A long stretch takes place at a coremaker's bench, where men in caps finish and patch pink-orange sand cores using small hand tools and bowls of paste. Racks and stacks of finished cores fill the background. Each job is filmed in one steady, static take, so the viewer can judge how fast the worker is going.
