The annual throwaway includes 48 billion cans, twenty six billion bottles, four million tons of plastic, seven and a half million television sets, thirty million tons of paper and seven million cars and trucks. It costs over four and a half billion dollars for disposal . Each year Americans see the effect of the present solid waste load everywhere in smoking dumps that ring their cities and add to the pollution of their air in foul smelling barges that make their way out to sea to dump their cargoes of sludge and the overflowing garbage cans that lie in their sidewalks and alleys and in the acres of automobile graveyards that mar the countryside.
