Description: This silent black-and-white home movie, filmed in 1955 by an unknown U.S. Navy researcher, officer or sailor stationed at a U.S. military base in Antarctica, captures life during Operation Deep Freeze I. This was the first in a series of American missions to the continent. Launched in 1955, Operation Deep Freeze marked the beginning of sustained U.S. involvement in Antarctic exploration and scientific research, laying the foundation for long-term presence under the Antarctic Treaty System. The operations continue today, with modern missions still supporting U.S. research stations. The film includes footage of vast and desolate Antarctic landscape, views of the inside of the soldier’s tent-barracks room, scenes of supply drops, a traditional method of homemade alcohol preparation, and more. Slaton, USN who later used it to travel to the South Pole.) Vast snowy landscapes (07:07). Sexually suggestive posters featuring women in lingerie or nude (07:57). A stationed soldier is presumably using a traditional method of preparing or making alcohol, specifically liquor or spirits (08:36). Footage of the snowy landscape surrounding the army base (11:28). A soldier fills what appears to be a generator or heater with gas (11:51). Footage of the snowy landscape surrounding the army base, featuring views of a dome structure and other small facilities on base (13:47). Powdery snow (14:09). Snow-covered landscapes captured from a high vantage point on the base (14:23). Additional scenes from the base and the surrounding snowy landscape (15:41).
