Oldest Auto in the US

Genre: home movie

Year Published: 1931

Description: Silent home movie of 1931, filmed by Thomas A. Peabody (1881-1944), showing his 1901 (possibly 1902 Model year?) "Curved Dash" Oldsmobile, considered as the first car to be mass-produced in the United States. From a 1929 Newspaper, Shreveport Journal: The above curved dash Oldsmobile and its chassis is believed to be the oldest car in the country carrying a 1929 license. It is owned and operated by T. A. Peabody, of the Peabody Seating Company, North Manchester, Ind., and was manufactured in 1901, more than twenty-eight years ago. The picture of the chassis shows the advancements in automotive construction even more than does that of the car. In the days of this early Oldsmobile the "frame" consisted of two springs which joined the axles and upon which the little one-cylindered engine rested. As compared to this the frame in the present Oldsmobile is of heavy steel with side rails 5½ inches deep and braced with five heavy cross members. It supports a six-cylinder engine and rests on long springs which assure a riding ease unknown to motorists of 1901. Writing from back of photo found on eBay: Oldest licensed automobile in the U.S.A., 1902 “one lunger” Oldsmobile. Completely restored and will run like a scared cat. Exact duplicate of car brought to Wabash County 27 years ago. As good as the day it left the factory. *Contact Regarding Usage* Soundtrack Added, from LoC Jukebox: Keep away from the fellow that owns an automobile - Irving Berlin Processed song fairly heavily with audacity & fairlight FX to make it listenable, raw recording from the LoC is quite rough. Film is at the beginning stages of vinegar syndrome so had some cupping/warpage, added stabilization to help correct for it. Corrected for exposure/contrast through film as well.
