that we on the problems of agriculture and the can shape and tailor farm legislation to needs of our particular area so that we be most responsive meeting the needs the can shape and tailor farm farm an organization that was formed and is organization today it's also a representative of every farm bipartisan in nature and has each of the organization today it's also a members are active been negotiations and our deliberations and extremely helpful and in our discussions together we have been negotiations and our deliberations and seeking out those areas where as people discussions together we have been interested in the problems of the farm seeking out those areas where as people we can agree on matters of priority need interested in the problems of the farm of interest and we commonly agree on we can agree on matters of priority need these areas so that we can move ahead of interest and we commonly agree on with these particular problems and not these areas so that we can move ahead be concerned about the all too many with these particular problems and not differences that often come in interfere be concerned about the all too many with most effectively representing the differences that often come in interfere problems of Agriculture and the problems with most effectively representing the of rural America generally so the problems of Agriculture and the problems farmers advisory group in my area we of rural America generally so the decided that one of the most effective farmers advisory group in my area we things we could do in increasing decided that one of the most effective awareness and a mutual understanding and things we could do in increasing this nation would to bring to bring out awareness and a mutual understanding and to our area men who continually improving the efficiency agricultural strength of this economy so effectively of our American that this would be extremely useful to agricultural strength of this economy them so the when they went back to the that this would be extremely useful to Congress the United States and when they them so the when they went back to the went back to their own districts they Congress the United States and when they could speak with a greater awareness and went back to their own districts they an intelligence and understanding to could speak with a greater awareness and their own people about the vital an intelligence and understanding to interdependency of this nation's their own people about the vital economy and how incredibly important it interdependency of this nation's was that these programs in Congress the economy and how incredibly important it United States the farm programs and was that these programs in Congress the other matters of particular interest to United States the farm programs and us must be supported if indeed we are other matters of particular interest to going to have prosperity throughout the us must be supported if indeed we are width and breadth of this nation which going to have prosperity throughout the is understandably the goal of all width and breadth of this nation which Americans so it was a great pleasure for is understandably the goal of all you problem it represents to the family compare the cost to a working man the budget to afford the cost of a new problem it represents to the family automobile or pay his payment on that budget to afford the cost of a new type of machinery to see this staggering automobile or pay his payment on that cost of the farm machinery necessary for type of machinery to see this staggering a modern agricultural farming operation cost of the farm machinery necessary for as I recall also that on the farm where a modern agricultural farming operation we saw a typical display of equipment I as I recall also that on the farm where think that the farmer had something like we saw a typical display of equipment I 120 rubber tires on various pieces of think that the farmer had something like equipment you know really amazing and 120 rubber tires on various pieces of this was I think was one of the most equipment you know really amazing and interesting displays that we saw this was I think was one of the most I do we had one of the first farm that interesting displays that we saw we visited as you'll recall with a I do we had one of the first farm that typical farming operation and the the we visited as you'll recall with a that was Dylan Story's farm and he took typical farming operation and the the out his books and remember right in the that was Dylan Story's farm and he took farmyard and read us his cost of out his books and remember right in the operation and and told us the problems farmyard and read us his cost of that this represented in putting his operation and and told us the problems children through college and and also that this represented in putting his the next farm as you recall we had a children through college and and also display of all the farm wouldn't be so you could to to heighten the interest of involved with rural problems as I say it people who otherwise wouldn't be so gave me a much deeper personal involved with rural problems as I great geographic area but you represent in the heart of Philadelphia what is the the size of your area that right there illustrated graphically I you represent in the heart of Philadelphia could I don't think you'd this is this is a most remarkable have ever been west at all right it is it's you ever been there I don't think you'd the first time that I've really without ever been west at all their whole first time that I've seen a country and social and economic life was conditioned a group of people where their whole by the prosperity of our farms well I social and economic life was conditioned know I certainly hope that if you have by the prosperity of our farms well I occasion as I know you will in the know I certainly hope that if you have months ahead they're both here in the occasion as I know you will in the Congress and when you're back in your months ahead they're both here in the own area giving speeches and making Congress and when you're back in your appearances and talking with your own area giving speeches and making constituents when they do talk about the appearances and talking with your price of food being so high I know constituents when they do talk about the hopefully based on this trip this price of food being so high I know experience where we've gone over some of hopefully based on this trip this the actual figures of the cost of experience where we've gone over some of Agriculture and as well as the the great the actual figures of the cost of contribution of Agriculture I mean the Agriculture and as well as the the great fact that the average percentage of contribution of Agriculture I mean the personal income that is expended on food fact that the average percentage of in this nation is now about 18 a half personal income that is expended on food percent 19 percent that means of course in this nation is now about 18 a half that about 82 percent of a man working percent 19 percent that means of course man's take-home pay and your city of that about 82 percent of a man working Philadelphia is now available for cost man's take-home pay and your city of of medical care which are so high today, Philadelphia is now available for cost the cost of education which are of medical care which are so high today, staggering, and when they have children the cost of education which are at they have to send to college, clothing, and staggering, and when they have children luxury items, and automobiles, and at they have to send to college, clothing, and recreation, and travel and all the rest luxury items, and automobiles, and and this is because of the incredible recreation, and travel and all the rest accomplishments really of of American and this is because of the incredible agriculture and I think accomplishments really of of American you can very effectively now indicate to agriculture and I think them that we do eat better and more you can very effectively now indicate to cheaply than many people on history of them that we do eat better and more the of this world and this contribution cheaply than many people on history of is not only being made here at home but the of this world and this contribution overseas and the balance-of-payments is not only being made here at home but problem that we all see I know you Tom overseas and the balance-of-payments were happened to be on the house banking problem that we all see I know you Tom and currency committee and very familiar were happened to be on the house banking with the great problems that we face in and currency committee and very familiar balancing our payment situation here and with the great problems that we face in abroad and I think the fact that balancing our payment situation here and overseas agricultural trade that are abroad and I think the fact that represented in excess of six billion six overseas agricultural trade that are billion dollars last year is a represented in excess of six billion six staggering statistic and it shows that billion dollars last year is a unless we can maintain these overseas staggering statistic and it shows that markets maintain access to them in unless we can maintain these overseas Western Europe and increase the trade markets maintain access to them in that we now enjoy in these other areas Western Europe and increase the trade in the future years the consequences to that we now enjoy in these other areas the strength of our own economy will be in the future years the consequences to very very great indeed I happen to be a the strength of our own economy will be member of the House Foreign Affairs very very great indeed I happen to be a Committee is your where and in this member of the House Foreign Affairs capacity I'm also very much aware of the Committee is your where and in this very great contributions that American capacity I'm also very much aware of the agriculture is making through the food very great contributions that American for Peace program in these agriculture is making through the food underdeveloped areas closing the gap for Peace program in these between the staggering problems of underdeveloped areas closing the gap exposing world population crisis really time are building meet the needs of mankind for food out the strength of the agricultural unless we at the same time are building economies and all these other areas and out the strength of the agricultural here again I think the expertise the the economies and all these other areas and training the ability the knowledge of here again I think the expertise the the the American farmer is going to be training the ability the knowledge of invaluable in our overseas aid efforts the American farmer is going to be Tom head on something earlier that invaluable in our overseas aid efforts the opportunity to stay on the family ensure that these young people are given farm and to work and to enjoy not only the opportunity to stay on the family the economic and financial rewards from farm and to work and to enjoy not only farming but what I think you observed the economic and financial rewards from was a very very satisfying social farming but what I think you observed institution I know in your areas and the was a very very satisfying social cities you've got problems of juvenile institution I know in your areas and the delinquency of air pollution problems of cities you've got problems of juvenile urban renewal for example or you have to delinquency of air pollution problems of restore the great problems strengthen urban renewal for example or you have to the urban city and out and see the problems in Iowa and exactly what you had us do let's come then go through the the soil programs out and see the problems in Iowa and the feed grain program to see them then go through face when appropriation bill even though some of we go back to the city look what are the our critics which we have to face when suburbs our consumers the consumers are we go back to the city look what are the very careful about prices particularly suburbs our consumers the consumers are things like bread prices and and they very careful about prices particularly ask us why we support a program that's things like bread prices and and they gonna raise the price of a loaf ask us why we support a program that's of bread on that table did you receive gonna raise the price of a loaf mail Jack tax than on any other single issue this item and of consumer interest and we year it's a consumer it's a consumer know that the people who move to the item and of consumer interest and we suburb people that are in these areas at know that the people who move to the bye and own a home and they have a job suburb people that are in these areas at as you said they're they're worried bye and own a home and they have a job about housing they're worried about as you said they're they're worried schools I'm worried about that consuming about housing they're worried about dollar they're the people that carefully schools I'm worried about that consuming watch us and how we vote and how we dollar they're the people that carefully react and we can go back and tell them watch us and how we vote and with and saw and I just want you friends and the farmers that you have to know I think they learned as much as stayed with and saw and I just want you you did about your area and the problems to know I think they learned as much as and the fact that New Yorker can care you did about your area and the problems about Iowa I think it's a wonderful and the fact that New Yorker can care thing and I think the same is true about Iowa I think it's a wonderful Atlantic City needs a faraway place thing and I think the same is true Philadelphian we often get the feeling I Atlantic City needs a faraway place think in our area in rural areas or in Philadelphian we often get the feeling I Iowa that other parts of the country think in our area in rural areas or in aren't interested don't know our problem Iowa that other parts of the country don't care about it I think really what we're aren't interested don't know our problem talking about is evidenced by this trip don't care about it I think really what we're it's a question of us getting together talking about is evidenced by this trip and working very hard and it's a question of us getting together conscientiously trying to a clinger so and working very hard and the problems and I think we realizes as conscientiously trying to a clinger so we do all through life that that people the problems and I think we realizes as aren't all that different no matter we do all through life that that people where they are what they're doing and aren't all that different no matter they're just proud to be Americans and where they are what they're if thing together and I think a rising tide this economy is going to be strong is is gonna lift all the boats and if across the whole nation it has to be this economy is going to be strong strong the farm and again it has to be across the whole nation it has to be strong and the factory and they are of course strong the farm and again it has to be so closely interdependent I think we strong and the factory and they are of course spoken at the outset about the fact that so closely interdependent I think we the farm muscle politically and the spoken at the outset about the fact that Congress is is down there to such a low the farm muscle politically and the low extent over what if there used to be Congress is is down there to such a low earlier in the history of this country low extent
