Modern Chemistry, Lesson 129: Laboratory Experiments with Halide Ions - Observations and Inferences

Duration: 30 min

Creator: Encyclopaedia Britannica Educational Corporation

Description: Presents a series of experiments on the silver and mercury halides. The experiments show that the strength of ammonia thiosulfate ion, and cyanide ion as complexing agents for silver ion increase in the order given. Reactions are carried out to form red mercuric precipitate, which dissolves in an excess of mercuric or iodide ions.-EB same trends as the sulfur family and the halogen family. Ammonia is made synthetically from nitrogen and hydrogen by the Haber process. The oxidation of ammonia over a hot platinum catalyst yields nitrogen monoxide, which can be further oxidized and treated with water to form nitric acid.
