The making of medals and coins, an ancient but little understood art, is demonstrated by Laura Gardin Fraser, a foremost American medal maker. From modeled clay plaques to plaster moulds, casts, bronze moulds, and then finally steel dies reduced to one-third the size of the plaques, to stamp out the finished medal.
