[music] >> Here are Steve. Here's the classy file you wanted. >> I'll put them on the desk if you don't want to use it. Right. Oh, that's wonderful. Do it again. Always in the pocket. Now watch very closely. Oh, how did you figure that one out yet, Steve? Oh, I'm no good at figuring those things out. Try me again. >> Oh, no, twice is enough. Oh, that's a good one. Well, I was just talking to one. Oh, how about the one like this? Yeah. Yeah, I'm just talking. Oh, the prison break? Yeah, I heard about it. What? Who? They even got away, huh? And he was one of them? I didn't know that. Yeah, I'll try to see him before he sees me. Thanks for tipping me off, Inspector. Okay. What's up, Steve? Paul Garci broke out of the pen. Garci? Who's he? Yeah, Paul Garci. He was that pal of his that stuck up a bank and killed a cop. Oh, he was no pal of mine. We simply grew up together, that's all. Now, we didn't have anything on him until you made him open up. Well, Garci always did like the sound of his voice. I told him he was a punk. So, of course, he had to make a speech about what a big shot he was. That got him. You sure make it sound easy. >> It was. What happened? Well, after Steve here pinned the stick up on him, he got himself a hideout over a garage. I had a whole platoon to surround the place. We had to use tear gas, machine guns. And Garci got Cohen. Oh, Steve, I was meant to ask you. When you told us to hold our fire that night, did you know what you were going to do? Well, not exactly. Except I hate gunplay, Jerry. Especially around people who might get hurt. Well, he could have plugged you dead center when you were standing there right under that window calling him names. We thought you were nuts. The one thing what Garci would rather do than eat a fight is talk about himself. That is. So, I just said a lot of things to him I knew he'd want to answer. Well, anyway, while he was shooting off his mouth, we were able to come up from behind and get him. You know, Jerry, you're always one jump ahead of a guy if you know what he's liable to do. And I knew Garci. You see, the three of us went to school together. PS 189. Three? You and Garci only add up to two. Well, it was a girl, Lorna Wilson. Oh, yeah, Garci's girl. We used to fight from the third grade up. About her? No, no. She was a skinny, long-legged kid with freckles and big feet. What's the fight about? Jerry? Well, it seems to me I heard someplace she used to be your girl. >> Oh, nuts. I used to see her in school sometimes. Then when I joined the force, girls were out. Last time I heard of her, she was Garci's girl. Hey, Jerry. Yeah? That's where he might be right now. >> Where, Steve? Wherever she is. Pete. Yes, what is it? See if you can find out where a dame named Lorna Wilson lives. Check out the Garci files we've got in there and find out where he is. Where do you think he All right. Yes? Uh look in the telephone book. I'll do that. Hey, Steve, um when was the last time you saw this scrawny, freckle-faced, long-legged kid? I haven't seen her since Garci was sent up. That was a couple of years ago, wasn't it? Yeah, I know. Who do you think you're kidding? What do you mean? It shows all over you like measles. What does? Garci's girl. That's you like a kick in the teeth? I always wondered why you never went for dames. Well, I just haven't time for them, Red. You know, I felt that girl at the trial, too. Wasn't anything special, freckles or pigtails. As for her legs, I couldn't tell you how long they were, but brother, they sure looked anything else wrong with her. Very funny, Jerry. Very funny. Only thing wrong with her was she was the wrong guy's gal. I don't like that talk. Aw, put your shirt on, Steve. Look, all I said was >> what you said, and I don't like it. Lay off. I don't care what she looks like to you. To me, she'll always be a be a nice kid with freckles and skinny legs. Hello. Yes, this is Lorna. Oh, hi, Len. Yeah, yes, I'm I'm dressing right now. No, don't bother to pick me up. I'll meet you over in the lobby in about half an hour. Well, anyhow, in an hour. Goodbye. Hello, Lorna. Paul. Paul Gardner. >> [music] [music] [music] [music] >> I don't get sore, Steve. All I said was that I haven't seen her since Garcetti's trial. Yeah, yeah, I know. You know, Steve, I don't think you saw her even then. I mean, the way she really was. You know, you got a reputation around this place for being pretty hard boiled. I've been working with you long enough to know that you're just another sentimental sap. Ah, shut up. You didn't see her the way she was because, well, she was Garcetti's girl. You saw the way she looked when she was your girl back in fifth grade or high school or whatever it was. You know, you're in love with her and, well, you're just not in love with her. Get lost, will you? You know, a tough guy like you in front of me talking about psychology and and all of a sudden I begin to get it. You're in love with a kid who just ain't a kid anymore. And what burns you up is that, well, when she grew up, she was somebody else's gal. That's the Hey, wait a minute. Now I know why you went after that guy, Garcetti. If you don't close that trap of yours, I'll do it for you. >> Ah, see? Don't you know there are more women in the world than there are men? Is where the dame lives? Now you see, Steve, that's what comes from having your records indexed and cross-filed. While they can take days to find people, we do it in minutes. That's real police efficiency for you. How'd you find the dame? I looked in the phone book, like Steve said. Come on, boy, let's get going. You're even prettier than you used to be, Lorna. I I can't to the same to you. No. Well, nice place you got here. Married? No, I've got a job. Oh, waiting for me to break out, huh? It's your apartment. Well, I didn't expect you to turn the lights on in 2 years, did I? Paul, will you please get out of here? I told you when you started going with that gang of crooks that I was going to keep you. I'll get me a drink, baby. I'm tired. I've been busy the last couple of days. Busy? Well, didn't you hear how I outsmarted them up the river? In all the papers. I uh I don't read the papers much. Well, then I'll tell you all about it. No, no, no. We don't want to call up anybody. It's pretty chilly, Paul. I've got a date. When I don't show up, he'll telephone. When I don't answer, he'll come up here. You'd better get out while you can. >> Who you got a date with? Is that cop, Martin? No. Why would you think of him? He's the only one you seem to have a picture of around here. He's dead. Captain of the high school football team, huh? That was ages ago. I didn't know what else to do with it, so I had it framed. >> You thought he was a hero, didn't you? For a while I did. That was just kid stuff, Paul. Now he's nothing but a crummy detective. Dodge you. How do you know? Why, you I heard about it. I haven't seen Steve since Since he set me up? Don't lie. Honestly, Paul. Well, get me a drink. Find out I'm still fond of bourbon if you have any. Steve Martin, huh? Well, I got a few words to say to that Mike cop before I let him have it. Always looking things to me. Might have known he'd try to move in here after he set me up. I swear to you I haven't seen Steve in 2 years, not since the trial. Well, I think you're lying. It's okay, baby, if that's the way it is and you don't care if you never see him again. You know, Lorna, you get a lot of time to think when you're sent up the river. I spent all my time just thinking about three things. How to get out, you, and him. And I got out. Now you, and then him. They'll put you back. No, they won't, baby, because I'm too smart for it. I got out, didn't I? And look at me. In 2 days I got clothes, I got money, and I got a gun. You know what I did? You know why I'm safe? Because I was smart enough not to try to hide out someplace. I walked down the street just like anybody. Even passed a couple of cops. And I looked them right in the eye. Okay, baby. Later. But Paul, you can't get away with this. They'll get you. General Oakes, they'll get you. And I hope that they do. I don't want them to get you here. That would put me on the front page. And they'd call me Garcey's girl like they did before. I spent 2 years trying to make people forget that. Some people never have. And they never will. Well, you'll always be Garcey's girl because we were meant to be together. I don't know. But they did. I told him not to come here. Steve Martin? No, no, I swear it, Paul. Well, if he doesn't think you're home, he'll go then just be quiet. >> He knows that I'm here. I just talked to him on the telephone. Well, is there another door or is it a fire escape? No, I wish there was a fire escape at the end of the hall. Well, just keep quiet and he'll go away. If it's the police, they won't. Well, where's a good place to hide? >> There isn't any. Look, why don't you put your gun away and give yourself up? There's no use killing any more people. >> out for that window. Yeah, this is all right. This is the first place anybody's locked. If it's the cops, he won't know what to Oh, Paul, don't be a fool. You think they'll get rid of me if they're the cops? You just keep out of the way. Don't try lamming out of here, either, if you know what I mean. Remember, I'll have my eye right on you. Who is it? Hello, Lorna. Hey. What are you doing here? Are you all right? All right. Why shouldn't I be? Well, Bartley broke out of the pen. Oh, he did? Yeah, I thought he might be here. Why should he? Oh, you know, love. No, I don't know. Mind if I look around? Yes, sir, I certainly do. All right, I'll be I'm not accustomed to having my apartment raided by the police. >> You know, a con on the loose always looks up his old friends. >> Well, it's nice of you to worry about me, Steve, but if Paul should come here, I'll know what to do. Yeah, I'll bet. I'll tell him that you were here looking for him. Well, thanks. Now, is there anything else? You don't seem to be very glad to see me. What's wrong? Wrong? Nothing. Nothing at all, right? I'm just surprised to see you, that's all. I was dressing. I was in there dressing when I heard the bell ring. That's why it took me so long to answer. Why didn't you say it was you when I asked? See if you can't stay here. I'm not dressed, so please go. There's nobody here. There's nothing wrong. And even if there were, I wouldn't need to leave to change. But please go and let me finish dressing. Go ahead, I'll wait. But I don't want you to wait. I haven't seen you in two years, and I certainly don't want to see you now. I have a date. Sure, you've got a date with me. Oh, uh by the way, don't you want to finish your drink? My drink? Yeah. Oh, no. No, I I don't want any more drink. Oh. All right. I'll wait. Don't wait. What what are you waiting for? You. I'll put a dress on, honey, and then we'll go out some place. Or what would you rather stay in tonight with Jane? Look, if you're waiting for Paul so that you can take him back to prison, let me tell you I I've changed. Well, we usually go out, don't we? Steve, I used to try. He's not in here. Go. That's it. You are drunk. Oh, look. Do you see a good guy and go have your binge somewhere else, will you? I've got a good mind to phone the police department and tell them that you're here drunk and and making a nuisance of yourself. >> Go on, call them up. Just, uh please go, Steve. Besides, I'm off duty. But I I thought you said you were looking for Paul. Well, yeah, but this is rather a social call. I mean, you see, I figured he might be here. I know I would be if I just broken out of the pen and had a girl like you. Or used to have a girl like you. What do you mean by that? Oh, I'm afraid he's too yellow to show his face around here. He'd be stupid if he did. This is the first place we'd look for him. Well, now that you see that he isn't here, get get out. >> Yeah, but he might show up. You see, he doesn't know you're my girl now. Look. That's better. Oh, you lie. You you you Let me tell you something, Steve Martin. I've never had any use for you. I'm Darcy's girl. Come on now, sit down, honey, and sober up. Steve, listen to me. I've been Darcy's girl for a long time. I never liked you. But but after you sent Paul to prison, I began to hate you. And I hate you more and more all the time. Is that um Is that why you keep my picture here? Yes. So that I can look at it every once in a while to remind myself how much I hate you. And now get out. I um I don't see his picture around here anyplace. Well, I don't need anything to remind me of him. Steve, you never really understood Paul. You never gave him a break. He He's a nice guy. >> Oh, yeah. Yes. Yes, he really is. He's kind and I love him. You know, Lorna, ever since I came here, I've you've been giving me this get out routine. I've been trying to figure what you're up to. And just what do you mean by that? >> I get it now. Darcy's out of the pen. You figure he might come here. You're afraid he'll find out about us and make trouble. He might even get rough with you when he finds out what a good time we've been having while he's been away. Oh, that's a lie. >> Don't worry about Darcy, honey. He never shoots anybody except in the back. I wouldn't be too sure of that. Chances are he won't find out about us anyway. He didn't catch on the last time. That's how stupid he is. All the time he was talking about you being his girl. We knew whose girl you really were, didn't we? I was Gussie's girl. Mhm. And I still am. Remember all the times he wanted you to go out somewhere and you wouldn't go because you had a headache? And I was the headache you had. Steve Steve what are you trying to say? Well, I'm trying to say that I've loved the ground you walked on ever since we were kids. Remember when Gussie threw ink in your hair and I knocked his front tooth out? Didn't you know I loved you then? Lorna, I thought about you all day and dreamed about you all night. Did you think I was going to let a punk like Gussie have you, my girl? No. Because I knew you loved me and not him. And all the time you've been talking, trying to make me jealous of that crummy cop-killing pork butcher. I've got more love for you in one finger than he has in his whole crooked body. Did he ever kiss you so that it made your head swim? Did he ever kiss you so that you felt I'll show you what I mean. Okay, Steve. Don't move. Hello, Gussie. Oh, he was lying. I've got my own idea who was lying, baby. I was wondering how long it was going to take you to boil. >> I'm boiling. You take it easy, Gussie. You wouldn't want Lorna to get hurt. >> That's why you've got everything your own way now. You've got the gun. Please get away while you can. Move over, Lorna. No. No, I won't let you. Okay. I've got a few things I want to say to this smart cop before I let him have it. I could have let you have it from the closet, Martin, only I wanted you to know who was doing it to you. Well, that's nice of you, Gossie. Wise guy. Too big for your britches, you always were. Just a minute. >> Don't move, Martin. Got a few things I want you to hear that I've been thinking for the last two years. Some new ones I thought up while I was in the closet there listening to you and watching you with my girl. Oh, he was he was only trying to make you mad. She's right, Gossie. I haven't seen your girl for 2 years. When I finish saying what I have to say, I'm going to let you have it. Now, move over, Lorna. Do what he says. No. No, he won't shoot if I'm in front of him. >> You're not doing me any good this way. Wait a minute. Just stay where you are, Lorna. Ever since you came in here, Martin had your right hand in your coat pocket. Until he got so interested in kissing my girl. What have you got in that pocket? Huh. You don't think I come looking here for you with a without a gun, do you? Lorna, take your left hand, put it in his right hand coat pocket. Go on. Now, take it out. Hold it by the barrel. Hand it out backwards, the handle first. And don't turn around. Do what he says. And no tricks out of you, Martin. I know how good you are at them. But I don't think you can think it out of them right this minute. >> No, as a matter of fact, I can. Give him the gun, Lorna. Besides, it'll be more comfortable for both of us if we break out of this clinch. >> That's that. I'll get out of the way. And keep those hands up high. A smart cop like you might carry a spare. Oh. Oh, he's got >> Lorna, no. Now, Martin. Just a minute, Gossie. Before you get trigger-happy, there's one little favor I'd like to ask of you. All right. Show Lorna how yellow you are. Go on and beg. Well, a condemned man might at least beg for a cigarette. >> No, need to steady your nerves, huh? Okay, I'd like to see you die. I've always wanted to, at any rate. Smoke his last cigarette. >> Oh, thanks. Oh, wait a minute. No, you don't. No tricks. Okay. Now, just have one of mine. Nice, fresh pack. No, just keep that. Here, catch. Lorna, give your hero a light. Thanks, Crassus. Now, you catch. Yes. Come on, Jerry. He's all wrapped up waiting for you. Oh, so he was here, just like you said. >> Yeah, hiding in the closet. Took so long I thought you Well, I'm ready to bust in. >> Well, it'd have to be a one-man job, but for a minute there, I was afraid one wasn't enough. I had to tap him. At least he didn't come out shooting. No, he came out just the way I figured, talking. How about the girl over there? >> Oh, she's all right. You and Pete get this jerk out of here. Okay. Come on, smart boy. Up you go. Jeez, I hope you never have to tap me, Steve. I'll be along later, Jerry. Uh Steve, you better wash your face first, huh? Oh, oh, uh yeah, thanks. Well, that's twice I've had to take him away from you, isn't it? I'm sorry. I thought he might be here, and the minute I came in the door, I knew he was. But you see, if I'd started to look for him, there'd have been a lot of shooting. And I didn't want you to get hurt, and I didn't want to get shot. So, I baited him to make him show himself. I figured he'd want to talk. Oh, I'm sorry, Lorna, for having to rough you up like this, uh, the kissing and all that. That That was bait? Oh, sure. No guy likes to see another fellow making love to his girl. And all those things you said, they were bait, too? Oh, yeah. Yeah. I figured better bring them out in the open. How is that so? Well, all I've got to say to you, Steve Lacey, is that you're detestable and I hate you. Why, you're no better than he is. At least he doesn't tell somebody he loves them unless he means it. >> Well, now don't get sore, Lana. Don't get sore. It was all just in the line of duty, I suppose. Well, yes, of course it was. Well, well, let me tell you this, you phony Romeo. I don't care what it was in the line of. If you think you can just barge in and and maul me and spout all that stuff and then just sit there and say that you're sorry and that you didn't mean a word of it and then think you can get away with it just because you're a policeman, you've got another thing coming. >> Wait a minute, Lana. Wait a minute. You mean, it would have been all right if I'd meant it? >> No. It's just that I don't like to be kissed with distaste. Distaste. For fun? Well, it couldn't have been very much fun for you. You said you were sorry. Don't you know that's the worst thing a man can say to a girl when he's kissed her? Well, I enjoyed it. >> Oh, you did? >> Yeah. Lana, did you really mean the things you said? About being Gussie's girl? Yes, of course. And that you love him? Yes. Lana, why don't we both quit lying? >> Lying? I am, or was. Which time? I mean, when? When I started out. Started out what? Making love to you. And then? Well, having you in my arms, having you so close to me sort of got me. When I heard myself saying those things to you, I was surprised. I I because they were the sort of things I've been saying to myself all these years. You mean you meant what you said? >> Well, I Oh, well, what difference does it make? You're Garson's girl. Steve. Steve, I was lying, too. About what? Everything. I had to. He was going to kill you and I knew it. He was in that closet with a gun and you were out here and you were a wonderful target. Is that when you found out you didn't hate me? I found out a year ago. You mean you mean you love me? But why didn't you tell me before? You never asked. Whose girl are you? Not Garson's. >> [music] [music]
