Description: Description: A 1920s cruise with long stops in Thailand, China, Hong Kong, and Japan, with street scenes, merchants, civic festivals, national festivals, and a dramatic display of a mythological Oni character. Notable for sequences in which members of the public pursue their everyday lives before the textures of life changed in the 20th century. European and presumably Euro-American tourists express their enthusiasm around the ship, and through exaggerated descriptive language stated in intertitles. Shown are forms of labor that mostly became extinct with motor cars including people hauling heavy loads by hand, and colonial-era sedan chairs carrying tourists supported by the labor of locals.
