HMCS Chippawa Interview Excerpt (Circa 1960)

Description: The HMCS Chippawa is the land-based naval reserve division of the Royal Canadian Navy located in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Despite being situated far inland, it is one of the largest naval reserve units in Canada and acts as a local training and recruitment center for part-time sailors. The unit was originally formed as the Winnipeg Company of the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve on March 19, 1923. The history of its facilities can be broken down into a few major dates: Initial Opening (1923): The unit first opened in a small office and room at the McGregor Armouries in March 1923. Norwood Facility (1924): In the spring of 1924, it moved to the Rat-Portage Lumber Company building in Norwood (which still stands today). Official Commissioning (1941): The division was formally commissioned as HMCS Chippawa on November 1, 1941. Hudson Bay House (1943–1998): In January 1943, it moved to the former Winnipeg Skating Club/Hudson Bay House (51 Navy Way). This historic building, which also served as an active training center and housed a naval museum, was demolished in 1998. Current Facility (1999): The current 4,200-square-meter facility located at 1 Navy Way was built at a cost of $7.35 million and officially opened on November 28, 1999. Today, it continues to serve as a training hub and shares it's site with the Naval Museum of Manitoba!
