the nurses he's standing there taught me something something beautiful something hopeful i was a war correspondent covering a particularly savage battle when i came upon a frontline medical station the nurse was preparing a wounded man for surgery the soldier was bloody filthy made me squeamish to look at him but she went about her job swiftly and expertly i said only a few words to her but i remember her answer every time i see one man sacrifice himself to help another sister i said to her i wouldn't do what you're doing for a million dollars exhausted she stopped for a moment and answered in an even softer tone brother neither would i you
