Dr George Preston of the University of California's Lick Observatory, describes his use of mira variable stars in deducing and reconstructing the probable origin and evolutionary history of the Milky Way. Features views of the Lick 120-inch reflecting telescope and points out the operation of its elaborate spectrographic equipment. Filmed on locations atop Mount Hamilton in California.
