On May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helens erupted in a cataclysmic explosion that reshaped the Pacific Northwest landscape and shocked the nation. Following weeks of seismic activity, steam venting, and the growth of an ominous north-flank bulge, the volcano blew with the force of a massive blast, instantly devastating 150 square miles of wilderness. The eruption triggered massive mudflows, devastating floods, and widespread destruction of timber, property, and infrastructure, while blanketing neighboring states in thick layers of abrasive volcanic ash. Despite evacuation warnings, some residents—most notably stubborn lodge operator Harry Truman and the Seibold family—tragically chose to stay behind and lost their lives. President Jimmy Carter later toured the unprecedented devastation by air, describing the area as resembling a moonscape. In the aftermath, survivors began the arduous task of cleanup and recovery, while the region faced immense economic losses and dealt with the profound ecological transformation left in the volcano's wake.
