Dixie - 1924 Civil War Silent Film 'The Chronicles of America' | 16mm Film Scan

Description: Dixie (1924) now available to watch for the first time in decades. As the title and ending cards are missing, film is incomplete to an unknown extent. However, it seems as if the key parts of the story are here. Musical score added. This film is offered for historical and educational purposes, it is a product of its time and contains depictions that might be considered outdated and offensive by modern standards. Dixie was one of fifteen films commissioned by Yale to use in educational settings, part of "The Chronicles of America" series, based on the 50-volume book series of the same title. The film follows the story of a Southern family and a slave revolt, with the film culminating in General Lee surrendering to General Grant at Appomattox. Interestingly, the McLean House was dismantled in the 1890s, so I'm not sure where the one they filmed at was! Film base was tinted in a few shades, with most of it being a bright yellow, with portions more of an amber color, and one short bright blue segment. The only other known copy of it is sitting somewhere in the Yale Archives, certainly not viewable on a whim to the general public. I created the intro title cards from scratch using lettering from the intertitles, and applied film effects to it.
